DF: CONTROL PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S 60 Fps and RT mode

I start playing it recently (I tried before on my pc with 1060 and was not good)

still feels kinda lame.. hair shader, skin shader is not AAA, also animations and mocap are pretty lame. Some voices and movements don’t match :/

Combat is ok... glad I wait for ps plus “free” version. (The pc version I got for free or 5us don’t remember )

In the video he says it's brighter on PS5, but the article says it has crushed blacks, isn't that the opposite? :pie_thinking:
Where's the loss in detail in the dark areas?

5.5 = 2.4 once again 🤡

Seems like we are getting dangerously close to:

PS5 = XSX

Oh My God Reaction GIF

There is a lot of false info in that summary.

- PS5 has a darker image.
- Both drops to mid/low 50fps (GPU related?)
- Series X stutter is when it shows some UI element on screen or/and standard transversal.
- VRR doesn’t fix the stuffer on Series X.

They mentioned at 8:33 that S|X Performance mode runs at a steady 60fps more stable overall.

Seriously though, the funniest part of the video was near the end where Tom asked Alex which mode he would choose, 60 fps performance mode, or 30 fps ray-tracing mode. While he tried his best to hide it, you could tell that he was a bit confused by the concept of having to choose, thinking to himself "Nah, I think I'm just going to play this on PC at 60 fps, with ray-tracing and ultra settings thanks". With Tom being the Switch guy, John the retro guy and Alex the PC guy, I think they need someone super into the two main consoles to do these type of videos. While they try to be very professional, the kind of enthusiasm that naturally comes out when covering their favoured systems and topics is conspicuously missing when covering the new consoles.

I dont know why they think the PS5 drops are GPU related when the Xbox drops happen in combat sections. I saw the framerate dip to 53 fps in combat on the xsx. how is that a stutter and not a gpu related framedrop?
I think what they want to say that xsx has also gpu dips but additionaly this strange dips even to 40ish when big fonts appear

on the other hand helps with being more objective ;)

They did about Series S... overall has the less stable 60fps.

About Series X and PS5 they said the framerate drops are about the same (even the video showing otherwise)... plus Series X has additional stutter over the framerate drops.

Edit - Fixed... Series S has the worst framerate.

Was the sarcasm too subtle? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

These threads are normally well into the 10th page before I get to see them, so since I'm early this time I'm just having a bit of good-natured fun about how much argument and debate these tiny differences in resolution/fps/loading times etc seem to spark. Good times!

Eidt:

I think ray-tracing was always going to be a stretch for the new consoles, so overall this is a good port on both consoles. I'd love to see some mad dev attempt a Switch version.

So first time playing it. Am on PS5.

I’m surprised how much it feels like Max Payne from the beginning. It feels good, and is compelling. Voice actress sounds a bit juvenile, may take getting used to.

On a technical level, I feel the SSR sucks in performance mode. It completely loses continuity on the left & right edges of the screen. Somewhat distracting.

I can see why RT is so desirable here, it creates a perfectly stable image....it looks great frankly, especially with so many surfaces at play.. But I feel part of it is due to a/b flip between the poor ssr and Rt to some extent. They need to buffer beyond the screen to fix those ssr sides in performance mode.

Or even better, give us a 1080p/60 rt mode. The in game photo mode unlocking frame with rt on shooting in the 50’s at 1440p shouldn’t require much tweaking to get it to 60 in 1080p.

Edit : default black level calibration is too low. To fix - go to calibrate brightness, and adjust till last shape becomes invisible and your properly calibrated.

Edit: the temporal shimmer on bright edges is also disappointing for a game released today, and on next gen. Been awhile since I’ve seen that. Common Remedy.

Edit: have seen some people have reservations on the haptics. Personally I love the tactility of the stepping motion, the movement just feels crisper because of it. It’s like the compass app on iPhone where you feel the notches as it rotates.

Edit: love the single difficulty. And now that the action is spicing up as I play along, the physics are bonkers. Need more physics in all games! No excuses this gen.

Edit: lack of hdr is stoopid in 2021. Next gen consoles are outputting hdr by default even. You can see the pc roots here through and through.

I think I’m all edited out...👍🏻

When PS5 SD complete fail in multiplatform games, PS fanboys say devs not optimizing it but When there are issues with SX version, blame it on hardware ignoring the real that is poor optimisation by devs. Love these 2 faced fanboys lol

its not true as we see xss has drops below 50 + stutter as xsx even in 900p
Sorry my mistake... Series S is the least consistent in framerate.

“Xbox Series S does seem to be the least consistent overall, but only by a very small margin”

About PS5/Series X:

“All three systems follow a very similar performance profile: the action is fast and smooth, marred only by screen-filling effects work that can cause drops to the mid-50fps region as the chaos plays out on-screen.
Owing to the dynamic nature of play, 'ranking' the consoles here is not easy - it seems that in some scenarios, Series X can outperform PlayStation 5, while in others the opposite is true.”

this is what smoothing can do.This not so strange and a problem for you this way i guess :

It's weird that simple things like text appearing on screen is what is causing many of the stutters. Alex did say that it is something that will probably be fixed, and it makes perfect sense to me that it could be easily patched, but maybe some will just take that as further evidence of his pro-Xbox bias.

I hear ya, hopefully can be patched with a quick fix as that stutter makes no sense. Remedy's got their analysis info from DF, so fingers crossed.

I will be hated again but things needs to be talked.

Pretty lazy analysis from DF again.

- Input lag not even talked (seems way higher than last gen versions)
- File size not talked (there is a over 50% difference in file size)

I mean they used to cover all points including power consumption and noise but today they do a very rushed work.

What is really happening?

A fresh example of it is Destruction Allstars with barely any loading times just like other PS5 games using the tech in place properly but you conveniently missed out blabla you know the drill
What?! I'm not gonna knock the games loading for a second, because I'm still slap bang in that next-gen loading times honeymoon phase.

But every single level starts with like a four or five second unskippable cutscene, which follows an actual loading screen, which follows a matchmaking process.

Getting into an actual game probably takes a minute or so, and at least ten seconds of that is straight up loading.

It's in no way an example of anything being instant or even near it.

DF is becoming more and more of a joke... How they spin things with no proof. PS5 obviously is the better version with a simple crushed blacks patch on the way.

no tower of power comment this time? Games need to be dropping frames for VRR to even work properly, so no VRR for the 1% of people with VRR tv's isnt a win.
It's dropping on both, looks like more on PS5 on the video, pretty pleased VRR support smooths it out for me, plus I don't want to have to be adjusting my tuned display settings to just see what's going on, that's ridiculous.

The patch would be just an adjustment to base value. You can fix it today by simply calibrating brightness in the game menu.

Well.....there was that whole "tools" narrative as well so this works both ways if we are going to start making heavily generalized statements.

Sounds like ram bandwidth stalls. Hello 10-6 mixed speed ram.

What else could it be? I’m sure they can optimise around it, likely come later in a patch once they nail it.

PS5? And which part? I haven't noticed that at all from the video. Looks to be drops to ~45fps in the red room on one of them ~55 on the other and not related to the stutter.
