I wouldn't say gaming is ruined but I have definitely seen better days in gaming.

Games didn't come in basic, plus or ultimate package
Developers dared to think out of the box
No sjw bullshit in games and pandering to lunatics of a certain forum
No rushed yearly cashcows
No unneccesary multiplayer
So games as a service or as a walking and exploring simulator etc
Games were not censored and dared to be more explicit

Just examples

Golden Boy
Poll is lacking a “No U” option

Of course there are a lot more crap games around these days, but not because the general quality of games is lower, but because we have more games available in general. Many good ones, many bad ones. Perfectly balanced as all things should be.

Games are easier to make now and for better or worse we get more choice. Some are amazing by a small team and some are asset flip shit. As a whole it's better to have choice. I'd like some gatekeeping to stop the utter shite games clogging up the digital shelf.

Nope. Gaming has more to offer more than ever. You're just cynical.

Agreed. Been gaming since the mid 80s and have never enjoyed it more. More great games than ever between three successful consoles, PC gaming thriving and a huge indie scene that fills the gaps in the mainstream/AAA market.

There’s a lot of crap, but there always was (think of all the licensed shovelware back in the day). Doesn’t matter if it’s games, movies, books or whatever it is always going to take some shorting the wheat from the chaff to get the most out of it.

And that’s even easier than every before as well with review aggregators to give a quick snapshot of critical takes on things, shit tons of YouTube videos to get a sense of gameplay, lots of games having demos, things like Gamepass making it easy to try a lot of games for low cost etc.

IMO if anyone thinks gaming is going down hill and can’t find things they like they either aren’t trying hard enough, have niche tastes that AAA games don’t cater too AND only enjoy things with AAA level production values or are just not into games anymore (or at least currently). Games require a lot more energy and time than other hobbies so many people just get to a point of life where they aren’t much fun anymore.

For me that happened in the middle of the PS2/Xbox/GCN generation. Had them all, but could barely be bothered to play for a few years as I just had too much going on with life, work, grad school etc. and didn’t have the mental energy for it. Looking back there were a ton of great games that generation, I just wasn’t in place for the hobby. Got back into gaming with the 360 and the past two generations have arguably been my favorite as there’s such great variety in gaming.

The only thing I think has gone down hill is gamer culture. Forums etc. are pretty terrible compared to their heyday. Things got all politicized with Gamergate, then the 2016 US election (and similar things in other countries) politicized everything and all that SJW vs. the otherside crap makes most places miserable. Fanboy/console warring nonsense is the worst its ever been as well—or at least the signal to noise ratio is worse as it seems a lot of the casual, positive chatting about games left forums and moved to Discord, Reddit or other places I don’t frequent.

That said, GAF is still a pretty fun place, just have to avoid certain types of threads and throw repetitive console warriors on ignore. Would be great if there was some community of folks that owned all platforms and only allowed discussion of games and not sales, performance comparisons and other crap. But I’ve been on game forums since the 90s and never found that. Closest thing was when forums had more traffic and some good ones had console-specified sub forums and didn’t allow any of the warring crap or discussion of other platforms period with in them. Forums just don’t have enough traffic to chop up discussion into that many subforums these days as seen by the slow traffic on places like Blu-ray.com’s gaming forums or the IGN boards etc.

I'm with you OP, 7 years and counting without a new Killzone is a downhill for me.
Edit: fuck it! Fuck world too, Earth is a downhill without a new Killzone2 like multiplayer. Point

In the PC world, no. In the console world, yes, due to the worst roster of console launch games in history when factoring in both the Sony and Microsoft platforms.

Neither seemed to have a day 1 plan in place outside of just releasing the hardware and "play your old games, bitches!".

"The best game ever was this lame-ass B-tier piece of trash I played on PS2 when I was twelve. Games of today don't come even close".

Meanwhile I'm completing my 17th campaign with XCOM 2+ War of the Chosen and loving every fucking minute of it. And filling the blanks with Mount & Blade Bannerlords, Warhammer Total War, Baldur's Gate 3 and plenty of other stuff.

You people need to broad your fucking horizons. The market is not just what PSN ads put in front of your face.

The best answer right here, Gaming has definitely gone on a downhill slope thanks to many of these examples. I'd be nice to see many of these problems disappearing but I think unless some major crash happens in the industry they are here to stay.

You can literally buy porn games on the worlds biggest digital game storefront. All your other points are mostly just jaded opinions. For ever 1 game that you dislike that has those things, there's 15 other games released.

It’s definitely gone downhill. Just because there are more games doesn’t mean they’re better.
I do agree that quality is better than quantity, but more choice is also a good thing. Not everyone shares the same tastes. There is plenty of people that enjoy every new iteration of the Battle Royale genre for example. It's quite easy to avoid the games that don't appeal to you, and look at more lesser known titles.

This. I really don’t get what niche tastes one would have to have to not be able to find a lot of games that like them these days. As I said above, I can see it somewhat for people who have niche tests AND only enjoy things with AAA production values as there is less variety in that space given the budgets require mass appeal. But failing that, people should be able to find tons of games that interest them that aren’t full of bugs on MTs or any of the other negatives that plague many games.

Just seems like there’s a lot of people on game forums these days who just don’t enjoy the hobby anymore and should move on. Life is awfully short to waste time online griping about a hobby that’s supposed to be fun. Life’s a lot better if you focus in on things you enjoy and minimize time and energy spent on things you don’t. Especially when it comes to hobbies where we have full control over whether and how much to engage when so much of life is grin and bear it to get buy when it comes to work, family etc.

The problem with gaming comes from mining and scalpers. If those asshole were dead, gaming would be great.

There was a guy in an article I read who built an 8-way 3080 mining rig in the back of a BMW and he did it because he hates gamers. I hope his stupid electric car burns down.

You’re right but the lesser known titles are lessrt known for a reason - they’re usually not good. When I think about all the games that I used to enjoy, there are no equivalent games for those today.

For the most part yes and it is going to get worse. I only base this on microtransactions and :games as a service models.

Microsoft and Xbox.... every day they make it less enjoyable.

Get their cancerous tentacles in there good and fill everything with MTX, battlepasses, lootboxes, subscriptions of every flavor, online fees, rental fees, buy out studios to coerce people to buy into their shitty platform......
I'm not sure if this is deliberate trolling or the most arbitrary and random attempt at console warring I've seen in a while.

Gaming has had its ups and downs in the past few years. 8th generation was worse than 7, and 6th gen will never be surpassed.

There’s still plenty of quality to find in addition to the YouTuber kids trash and Hollywood sequels of the EA and Ubisoft variety, and I’m content with gaming overall. I have way, way too many games to play.

I will say, that a shocking amount of said quality is in the form of remasters or remakes... hello again movie industry.

It's the truth... Microsoft is a cancer and should have been broken up 2 decades ago.

Their monopolistic tendencies ruin everything they touch. They have zero creativity and intend to buy their way to the top , they contribute nothing, creat nothing and are a huge negative in the space.

If every game had this then I would have agree with you but I was able to entirely avoid those because most of the games I enjoy do not MTX or other BS. Games that are GaaS and have MTX like Avengers or Destiny are just not for my taste even if did not have MTX and lootboxes, so its very easy for me to entity avoid those games.
