Your Top 10 Super Mario Games

German Hops

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief
What are the greatest Super Mario games of all-time? This is the question that is hard to answer because of all of the Mario games that have came out. Mario has been in 25 games or more. So hopefully the list is at least close to what most of your opinions are.

One of the main reasons why I am going to make this thread is because Mario Bros is the first Mario game ever to be released in the series. And I am really excited for it because Mario will be 50 years old this year, ever since Mario Bros was released on June 1st 1971. I think there are lots of Mario games better than the first one AS OF TODAY.

Here's my list: (in reverse order)

10) New Super Mario Bros

9) Super Mario Bros 2

8) Super Mario Bros

7) Super Mario Sunshine

6) Super Mario Galaxy 2

5) Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

4) Super Mario Galaxy

3) Super Mario Bros 3

2) Super Mario World

1) Super Mario 64

Most important is top 3... and IMO you've nailed it. That's my exact top 3. Mario will never ever get better than that, no matter the gimmick.

I'd put Mario 2 a little higher. But other than that, very good list. Mario 64 is a masterpiece of gaming.

I've played most Mario games, my list would probably look something like this:

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario 3D World
3. Super Mario World
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Super Mario 3D Land
6. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Super Mario Bros.
8. Super Mario Odyssey
9. Super Mario 64
10. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Honorable mentions: New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Sunshine

I'm way more into the obstacle course style of games, that's why SM64 and Odyssey are so low. Also, I know a lot of people really like Yoshi's Island, but I've never seen the appeal, one of the worst Mario games IMO.

Surprised myself when I put SM64 at the top of my own list, but it's the one game I've completed multiple times. I didn't own Nintendo consoles growing up, I revisited everything as a late teen / adult, so no nostalgia goggles which is probably why SMB3, World and Sunshine are so low.

1. 64
2. Odyssey
3. Galaxy 2
4. Galaxy
5. 3D World
6. 3D Land
7. World
8. SMB3
9. Sunshine
10. Land 2

This is such a difficult list! Should
I do it as I feel about it today, or how i did at the time...

The only qualifier is, I must've finished the game.

  1. Mario 64 - It was my most hyped game ever, saved for this and an N64 for months. Marked days off the calendar 1 at a time. Played and finished it in the stores before I got my copy. My first ever pre-order at EBGames. Hype!
  2. Super Mario Bros 3 - Arguably the best power up in a 2d mario game, i mean come on, the Tanooki suit is just revered!
  3. Yoshis Island - The swansong for the SNES, brilliant artistic graphics, great boss battles and the best Bowser boss battle ever! No other YI has come close.
  4. Super Mario World
  5. Super Mario Galaxy
  6. Super Mario Odyssey
  7. Super Mario Land
  8. Super Mario 3D Land
  9. Mario Bros

Ok, only a top 9 it is.

1. Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
2. Super Mario 3 on NES and Virtual Console
3. Yoshi Island on SNES and Virtual Console
4. Super Mario World on SNES and Virtual Console
5. Super Mario Bros on NES and Virtual Console
6. Mario 64 on N64 and Wii Virtual Console
6. Super Wario Land on GBC
8. Super Mario 3d Land on 3DS
9. Golden Coin on GB
10. Super Mario Land on GB

And that's it for me. I mostly hate the 3d and New games.
Most ports are trash and should be avoid at all cost.

- Super Mario RPG
- Super Mario 64
- Super Mario Bros 3
- Super Mario Galaxy 1
- Super Mario Galaxy 2

I don't consider Yoshi's Island to be a Mario game, so it isn't on the list. But I would put it next to Super Mario World in terms of best 2D platformers.

1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario 3D World
3. Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 (I see them as one game)
4. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Allstars version)
5. Super Mario Land 2
6. Super Mario Odyssey
7. Super Mario Sunshine
8. Super Mario 64
9. Super Mario Bros. 2 (Allstars version)
10. Super Mario Bros. (Allstars version)

Special Mention: Super Mario Maker 2.

Trying my best to not overthink it:

1. Yoshi's Island
Other Mario games may be better in some ways, but this is the one I have the most fun actually playing.

2. Super Talking Time Bros. 2
Putting a fan game this high may seem cringy to some, but this one is made by people who really get what makes Mario levels great and doubles down on everything I love about the series, mainly the exploration aspect.

3. Super Mario World
I'm really bad at it (can't handle the slippery controls), but the world design is just so damn good.

4. Super Mario Bros. 3
Best level design, and soo many cool secrets and power-ups.

5. Galaxy
6. Galaxy 2
7. Odyssey
8. Super Mario Bros.
9. Six Golden Coins
10. Mario Maker 3DS (the added levels by Nintendo are great)

Oooh, that looks interesting. I've been looking at a few videos and I see it referred to as Super Mario Bros X. Are they the same game?

Super Mario Bros. X is the name of the engine. It has a built-in campaign with the very un-Mario-like name "The Invasion 2", which is pretty fun as well. Super Talking Time Bros. 2 (and 1) can be found here, no separate downloads required.

10 may even be a bit redundant.

I feel the essentials are (in no particular order):

Super Mario World
I like it more than SMB3. Less fat, less side stuff like Toad’s houses and item inventory. Much better world map, interconnected and with secrets. Gameplay reduced to the very basics of platforming, longer levels on average, smart implementation of exploration elements without making it all about secrets. Just a perfect game in my book, it’s a joy to replay.

Super Mario 64
A game literally like no other. I’ve never played another game like this. Even 24 years later, replaying it was like rediscovering gaming.

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2
Galaxy is all about that Nintendo creativity. Even when the gameplay isn’t perfect, the sheer amount of brilliant ideas and the impeccable level design are awesome.

New Super Mario Bros Wii/U
Either is great. U has the better world map and the Luigi DLC. Wii is just a great game, and those extra levels are Luigi U difficult anyway.

Super Mario 3D World
The best of both worlds, and ridiculously imaginative. Can’t wait for many people to rediscover it when it hits Switch.

Super Mario Odissey
Enough ideas to make an entire trilogy. Perfect gameplay. Incredible exploration. So many secrets and little details. Best ending in a Super Mario game, ever.

Super Mario Bros.
The original Super game is still rock solid in its foundations. Always fun to waste half an hour.

Not included in my list:
- SMB3. Too redundant, levels too short and gimmicky, never liked the underground stages. Completely surpassed by SMW in my opinion.
- SMB2. Hasn’t aged as well as the original IMO.
- Yoshi’s Island. Strictly speaking it’s a Yoshi game, despite the Super Mario moniker. Very different gameplay than “regular” Mario, plays by its own rules.

That's the too 10 off the top of my head without putting too much thought into it. Odyssey seems a bit low and so does 64 surprisingly. However that's pretty much locked in and I'm not too proud of myself by adding in a Yoshi game that hides under a Mario title, but I'll take advantage of the situation.

SMB3 too redundant, even though 1 is in your list?

Also I found SMW too easy platform-wise. 3 had more variety, and infact less fat IMO. (World's exploration focus was misplaced due to Mario's simple item/move/objective setup.)

Is Mario 64 that good or was it just ground breaking at the time? I remember playing Zelda Twlight Princess and then got Ocarina of Time on the Wii afterwards. Despite their reputations it is clear that Twilight Princess is a better and more varied game

Still good. Just replayed it recently in the 3D all stars collection. Some of it hasn't aged the greatest for sure with the bad camera etc., but I still had more fun with it than Sunshine or going back to the NES SMB games. Being revolutionary is part of it's appeal for sure though. Nothing since has blown me away the way playing Mario 64 for the first time after playing nothing but 2D games before that did. I'm sure I'd like it less if I didn't have that experience, coupled with the N64 being the first console I saved up for and bought day one after starting to work part time.

In terms of video game design and the craft of how a character interacts with the world, I think Mario Galaxy 2 is the greatest game ever made.
