PS5 Coil Whine - What Is It and Can I Fix It?

I found this interesting from Corsair https://www.corsair.com/ww/ru/blog/coil-whine

They claim that the film caps are more susceptible to whine than electrolytics - it's the same type that was supposed to be the cause in the video ..

They state the issue is QC. (and so is fixable)
Film caps are cheap and good at what they do which is probably why they were used. Their buzzing is considered normal operation and the sound generally is not considered a QC issue.

Sony used the same film caps in the PS4 Pro power supply which also can have this buzzing issue. Sony knew this was a possibility when they designed the PS5 power supply and included these caps. Sony reusing the same part in the PS5 power supply shows that they don't consider it to be a problem so it's unlikely they'll do anything to try to eliminate it. Maybe people complaining about it enough will prompt them do something about it in a future revision. I guess time will tell.

Unreasonable fanboys take a complaint against their favorite company as a slight on their honour. Don't waste your time trying to convince them. The issue is real and all level headed people know that 😊.
Fixed. Because that's the truth. It's not exclusive to one set of fans. It's the same for all.

I've complained about a very well known wide spread issue, the Joycon drift. You know, the one Nintendo were sued for in the USA and Nintendo agreed to replace Joycons. A fan here asked me how much I weighed. True story, I shit you not. The extent some go to is hilarious.

When mine boots up you could hear it rooms away with the disc drive spinning. It stops after 15 seconds but it’s loud af
Yes - but that's the BluRay drive - not the same as coil whine

(PS4 does this too, lots of clunks and clicks)

My third PS5 is still the best one I've had but 60fps performance modes in Spiderman: MM produces coil whine, can't really here it in game just on the menus when the music stops.

I honestly don't think there is a truly silent PS5. Just variance on the ones out there and also peoples hearing differing.

I was going to ask you about your 3rd console and if was as 'silent' as some of the big Sony fans said it was. How close do you sit to your PS5? I sit less than 4 feet away and if I am playing PS5 games at 60 FPS I can hear varying levels of whine based on me being the menus or actually playing. I don't hear much playing PS4 games or Astros.

I sit 7 feet away. This is the best console I've had. On the OS screen silent, in game you can tell it's on when muted/silent scene but not annoying. In 60fps games marginally annoying but a lot better than previous two consoles.

One and only Series X silent at all times unless ear pressed against it.

All consoles digital titles used only.

Yep. I think that's the case with most consoles and devices. Few are truly silent, they vary across units in how loud they are and everyone has different hearing, different frequencies that bother them etc. I had to take back plasma TVs on two occasions as my wife and I both were annoyed by a loud (to us) buzzing noise on bright scenes that some friends and the repair guys they sent out either didn't here or thought wasn't bothersome. People just differ on this.

I've started to notice some coil whine on my PS5. I can't hear it with my headphones on (and sitting 9 feet or so away), so I'm not going to worry about it as I always game with headphones and it's now where near as annoying as the jet engine PS4 pro I gamed with the past several years.

The other thing to consider is we are all accustomed to fan noise in the background. Perhaps over time we will adjust to this. Although I will say if it's like my first 2 units I'd defo replace at it can leave a ringing in the ears.

I think what makes it worse for me is that I've never experienced it and Series X is silent (at least for me and I've noticed it in all 3 PS5 consoles I've had). There is the possibility of regional variances, parts used etc.

I remember a few months ago one of my sockets started making a noise. To me it was well annoying, to my parents they couldn't hear anything. Best £20 I ever spent swapping that out for perfect silence lol.

Mine's pretty quiet. I hadn't noticed it at all until the other day, and only heard it for a while and it seemed to stop. Will have to keep a listen to see if it's getting owrse.

My Series X is pretty silent as well--other than the disc drive being a lot louder than the PS5's when watching a Bluray/UHD. A bit annoying as I prefer using the XSX for that as it works with my Harmony remote vs. having to deal with navigating with the controller (or shelling out for the media remote) on the PS5.

Yeah must admit that's one test I need to try the physical media noise levels for both. Not for games just movies. If it started and stopped possibly it's a fan issue?

Theres also the possibility it could lessen or become worse over time. Its curious how 60fps modes seem to make it much noisier. There definitely the games to test it on.

Nah, it's the drive as it's constant. Neither the XSX or PS5 drive are silent during movie disc playback, but my XSX is notably louder (and seems to be the norm per other's impressions I've read). Both are quite a bit louder than stand alone Bluray or DVD players I've had, but neither are nearly as loud as they are during disc game installs (guessing the drive spins faster when copying that data than playing a movie disc).

I also believe that there are no Ps5’s without the whine, just variations / levels of it.
So many factors are influencing the sound itself and/or the listeners perception of it from my experience and investigations:
> Game playing (more or less taxing visuals)
> 60 FPS is louder than 30
> Sitting distance to console
> TV volume
> in-game activity (Menu, open word, high taxing scenario, etc.)
> personal perception and/or hearing capabilities

Some people might be lucky to have one that is more quiet than others.
If it is so loud that you can even hear it over the TV at normal noise levels of gameplay with music, it might be defective though. That one guys youtube video in the other thread, which showed a PS5 sounding like a coffee machine for example is definitely defective.

Mine has coil-whine during 60fps gameplay in Demons Souls and AC Valhalla as well as on the map- and loading-screens. It stops when i go to the game‘s main menus or to the PS5s menu. The whine is only hearable with mute TV or when the game is very quiet. I am sitting about 3-3,5 meters from the console. The sound is a buzzing noise, like a bumblebee.
I can live with it as long as it doesn’t become any louder over time.

Great post and yes all those factors definitely play into it. I just thought then with my experience Spiderman MM in 60 fps modes is noisier so naturally I assumed it was just any 60fps modes flat out that would cause this but then I realized Demon Souls/Astro I played at 60fps and had no issues with coil whine (on this 3rd unit). So its not necessarily 60fps in demanding games that's a factor. Maybe just total power consumption that for some reason is higher in Spiderman?

More power consumption means more amps going through which means louder whine yes. idk if spiderman uses more power though..

Yeah there must be something that triggers in in 60fps MM but not in Demon Souls and Astro on this third unit. Possibly it been open world as well maybe.

It's worth noting that on my first two consoles Demon Souls DID have annoying coul whine, regrettably I never tried Spiderman on those units.

oh I just remembered .. tech stuff follows - it could actually happen at a specific power range - not just high power - the switched mode powersupply will switch at different frequencies depending on the power draw (usually higher = more power) ,.. but .. the noticable coin whine could be parts resonating with the frequency - so it might be more noticable at a certain power level, not necessarily the highest ..some people caim that the PCB (board) the caps are connected to can act as a sounding board - it acts like a drum skin and works best at a certain freqency.

Doesn't solve the problem though.

I've had other computer stuff that whine and I could hear it pulse and change tone sometimes just by switching to a different program etc -so it definitely can does that..

Kindof not suprised it has coil whine based on those images - complete absense of any stabilising gunk in there.

The solution is 'white stuff' aka RTV Silicone putty or caulk - you'll find in in most commercially produced electric power supplies where it has a number of purposes, one of which is damping and absorbing vibrations...

Unfortunately PC-MC lovers their glass case and likes to show off their expensive GPU etc - which means no unsightly gunk for them - result - forums full of people complaining about coil whine .. looks like Sony took a page out of the same book, despite the fact you can't seen the things.. dunno why..

[also odd that the guy in the video doesn't just, you know, replace the capacitor .. ???]

So when I finally track down a PS5, all I'll have to do is have sex with it and that'll fix the coil whine?

The fucking thumbnails for YouTube videos kill me. 🤣

It's the cringiest stuff I've ever seen and that's coming from someone who recently read his old fanboy posts from when he was a member of N4G in 2009. (Not to mention my sexy no look stare for my avatar on here).
Some of those thumbnails must be made to appeal to people on some spectrum, Autism, Soy, I dont know. All I do know is I fucking hate them
