This can be a touchy subject but I really want to know what you guys think on this, would you rather Microsoft to continue buying studios, or would you like them to make new studios that are original to Xbox Games Studios? For me, I would go 50/50 where I want them to grow their portfolio by making studios that are unique to them only. Now I do understand that can take years to do so. But I personally think by doing that and researching what works for them when making new studios while buying studios that work for their vision of Xbox.

What do you think?

It depends, I love the idea of buying smaller studios that felt like they were constantly at the risk of going under like inXile and Obsidian. Bethesda was a bit more vulgar, but not bad either. "Making new studios" is not that frequent in the industry, not sure why this got attached to Microsoft.

MS will keep doing what rich kids with no talent do to succeed. Throw a shit ton of money at your problems.
That's what I think Microsoft will do, I think the only reason why they made The Initiative studios was to show face to calm down those who say Microsoft doesn't give a flying fuck about making games or make new studios that are original to Xbox. That's my belief, could be wrong.

I don’t know about what it would take to build a studio from the ground up since I don’t work in the industry. I’m sure they weigh to cost of doing this against the cost of buying someone along with the benefits that brings and do what makes the most business sense.

I don’t mind if they buy studios since I buy all the consoles and can play the games regardless of which box they play on. As long as the purchased studio can retain most of their creative freedom it’s all good. I’m most interested in the games themselves rather then which system they play on.

I keep thinking this is Resetera where the hate for Xbox is really strong, and sometimes I see dislike for Microsoft on here too. But that's rare.
Uh the MS dislike here is just as strong if not stronger than Era. They are the underdog company in this market but because they have the ability to really compete it breeds fear in some people. In the end their games hit multiple platforms so there is little to worry about. You don't need an Xbox to play MS games.

I say keep on buying. I see little benefit to creating new studios when you can grab up and bolster established ones.

game studios are in constant flux, there's not much difference between buying one or building a new one.

buying a studio basically gives you IPs and maybe technology. and in some cases the big guys of the studios.

Naughty Dog today is not even remotely the same team as Naughty Dog 10 years ago, some key members are still there, many key members are gone.
some smaller fish are still there and many smaller fish are gone.

it's the same studio in terms of name and the type of games they make since the PS3, but the rest is in constant change.

also Naughty Dog now is not even in the slightest way comparable to the PS2 Naughty Dog (sadly... fuck modern Naughty Dog) so as time goes on this is more and more the case.

so I see no difference other than they might get some IPs with it.

Make new studios

There is already a lack of variety and talent across the industry as smaller devs have been bought up, shut down etc.

New studios is a net positive. Buying studios is not adding anything

Or at least work with small studios and build them up into something special eg Asobi and Playground studios

Buy Studios/Publishers and then expand them. For example, Tango Gameworks has one team. I would like to see them expand to two teams. Secondary team works on The Evil Within 3 and the primary team with Mikami in charge makes his last final game before he retires. Still hoping for Microsoft to acquire Asobo, Techland and WB Interactive. And if Square Enix was willing to sell them off, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal with the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver, Thief and Gex IP's.

Making a new studio from the ground up is quite the gamble. I think they should wait until Perfect Dark comes out so they can see what works and what doesn't then try to build another maybe.

4th option: instead of making new studios or buying more studios, they should improve the studios they have.
They have more than enough studios, they just need them to communicate and share info/tech/talent between them and improve the quality overall of their output. Use the studios that are making good games as a reference to the process the other studios should be using.
And completely reform 343...

I want to see new companies doing new things in new ways. I want more people like these Kena dudes, or the returnal guys coming from resogun~ i don't wanna see venerable companies getting a few xbox (or any other brand) shirts sent in to bully them around, pervert their artistic decisions and ruin established reputations. Xbox should make their own studios and believe in nurturing talent rather than buying it.

Who cares, how they do it. Give us good games one way or another, and the player in the end will have a good experience. Do you really think at end of the day a good or great game that gets made matters who made it? A good product is a good product, no matter if it is 1st or 3rd party. Where it really matters is if it is a product that is 1st party exclusive that console. If a 3rd party makes something exclusive and it is good, all everyone does is feel cock blocked if you cannot experience it on another platform. If it 1st party of high quality game, then now it becomes a selling point. A good game is a good game, period. If Microsoft goes and buys studios because the determine that is the best route to take, it is not as if they only did it that way, as they have made their own studios. The same can be said of Sony.

It seems a bit short sighted to say how they do it matters, when if the outcome is great product for a platform, then they have done a good job of making that platform more appealing in ways that drives interest to that platform. The only thing about 3rd party being bought to become a 2nd or 1st party for platform, is a war of words, drive platform pettiness, and those only in one console corner justify why their purchase is better than the one who didnt make the same choice. In the end, we all work hard for our luxuries, including being able to get a games console, and no one sets out to make this purchase for crappy experiences, or to wish they had made a different decision.

In the end, it doesn't matter, a experience is an experience. If it a good one, it is only fan boys who keep driving a narrative, while others spending time going fuck that was a fun game. Do you really ask yourself after a good experience.... Was it a studio bought, or a studio built from ground up?

Seems absurd.

Doing work with Studios they have and staffing them more, building second and third teams is definitely the best once you are happy with the studio’s culture.

I think it has been an unsung important element of the growth for Sony’s first party stables: now the new studios they have added (new SanDiego Studio or Insomniac through a studio purchase), but the extra developers, artists, etc...
Sony have added personnel’s to their current studios over the last few years (most studios seems to have added people and/or new teams) and I think this has been showing in the quality and quantity of output (VR, PS4 and PS4 Pro, PS5 exclusives or PS5 patches, etc...).

They have nearly double the size of Sony studios. They should release some good games now, if not what's the point ?

I don't find that the recent acquisition of Zenimax is a great move. I was already skeptical with many of the previous studio acquisitions.

I would have preferred for Microsoft to focus on less studios, and make deals with third parties for new licenses or dormant licenses.

Now they have a bunch of studios, but I don't find diversity to be there that much, and we don't know for sure if quality will be there either.

I miss the option: buy studio's and let them make truly great AAA games. Cuz that's what has been missing for the last 7 years. If feel they need to 1up the quality of their studio's.

Why would it be a touchy subject? Every time MS buys a studio those games hit multiple platforms. It's only when Sony buys a studio do it's games hit only PlayStation. MS should build and buy studios just like any other platform holder.
Literally not true. They only do that when the IP is massive because it would hurt the IP if they didn't do it. For smaller games and new stuff they only release it on their platforms.

They have had enough studios for a long time. It's not about how many studios they have, it's about how to best manage them.
At some point, people have to realize that these buyouts are not for securing their own content, but for taking content away from the competition.
But taking content away from the competition would be against Good Guy Phil’s public statements... he wants ALL gamers to enjoy all games ;).

They will continue to acquire studios, as will Sony. As they have been doing since 2001

Most people are only aware of Microsoft buying something, which is ironic, since we've seen in the past that their games tend to come out everywhere anyway, while sonys becomes locked.

But people often act like this depending on who's buying.

"Microsoft acts like a rich kid and buys everything cus they lack talent."

"I'm so glad Sony bought this dev its so nice they support them financially I love these devs so much now"

This is the difference. Sony good. Microsoft bad.

Ah, the Diablo Immortal “don’t you all have phones” excuse... how well did it work for Blizzard lol?

Streaming to phone is literally AAA titles from console you can play with a controller.
Diablo immortal is a shitty mobile game at its core. How can you even compare this shit?

Not comparable.

There are three avenues to play Microsoft games this generation,

You can buy an Xbox, you might soon not even need a next gen one when Cloud gaming comes to Xbox One.

Use PC , either with a specific PC version or with cloud streaming when it comes to PC

Use your mobile, I think iOS will have it this year and Android has.

Nobody needs to miss out, you're covered.
