TLOU1 was the only one of the bunch that I really enjoyed. Uncharted 2 was a decently fun ride as well.

But when you're not getting much out of the story the games really fall apart IMO.

I liked the crash games fine enough, even if I think toys for bob made the best entry in the franchise.

Jak and Daxter went from a very fun first entry to a shit series of sequels.

Uncharted 1 was decent, 2 was better, and I adored 3. 4 and lost legacy bores me to tears.

The last of us I have a love/hate relationship with. The MP was fun, but the story was generic and only had a handful of stand out moments. It’s sequel I felt was horrible with little to no genuine evolution of its gameplay or level design. I did enjoy Abby well enough as a character though. Certainly better than Ellie.

I don’t get the adoration of the studio, but I am glad folks can get something more out of their games. To me they will just be that studio with a couple of enjoyable games and a lot of mediocre ones. For others they are all bangers.

They are the absolute best at their craft, but not without flaws. They need to branch out in terms of gameplay. They play it far too safe. Druckman has also taken the studio in an entirely too serious tone. He did that with UC4 and now TLOU.

I didn't even like TLOU2's narrative direction but even so it had me on the edge of my seat nearly the entire time in a way few games can do.

I kind of want the Naughty Dog back that made blockbuster action AAA with amazing set piece moments.
Really? i thought TLOU2 had some amazing setpieces. Sure, you werent jumping off airplanes and trains, but tlou2 had a lot more scripted setpieces than the first one and I really appreciated that. The two car chases were spectacular. very cinematic, perhaps even more so than the ones in uncharted. the zombie horde sequences reminded me of days gone and world war z. the bloater boss fights played out like a setpiece. the horse chase at the end with abby at night with the village burning was easily the most impressive graphical setpiece i have ever seen. abby vs ellie could also qualify as a setpiece even though it was a boss fight.

I do agree that it was way too serious. what neil didnt realize is that Ellie made tlou1 fun. it was just fun having her around telling puns, jokes and just being herself. it was a great dynamic that was missing in tlou2. Lev and Abby are the most boring pairing ever, and Dina and Ellie just didnt have the same chemistry after hooking up. it was way too serious.

I think they need to do something like mass effect. a space opera that borrows from star trek and maybe star wars. serious but with some levity. it's in their DNA and they shouldnt just ditch it. i understand that Ellie wasnt cracking jokes because she had just lost her father, but Abby and Lev didnt need to be that boring.

Can not deny their games are fantastic but I hope eventually their offensive studio name is changed to more reflect the way their new games are heading.. maybe "wayward non-binary companion"

The time of the year has come, now that it's official, to recognize the incredible achievements of the PlayStation owned, Santa Monica based powerhouse that is Naughty Dog. The Last of Us: Part II is sweeping Game of the Year awards, as well as other awards, from various outlets. With another great achievement added to the list Naughty Dog has finally achieved the three-peat that eluded them with Uncharted 3. Naughty Dog has released 3 Games of the Year in succession starting with TLOU, followed by Uncharted 4 and now TLOU: Part II. This achievement is unheard off since the advent of Game Awards. To date no studio in history has been as consistent in releasing quality games and standing above all the rest while capturing the hearts of critics and gamers alike (despite the fierce competition from great studios, creative minds and franchises).

You could say their prestigious story started by creating one of the most beloved franchises for PlayStation fans and gamers around the world with Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation 1. During PS1's heyday, Crash was the premier Sony mascot. It was then a great studio, an important studio, but one among many. The meteoric rise that catapulted them beyond just being one of many to being at the top of the gaming pantheon took quite a lot more years to materialize.

To me the meteoric rise started with the well known character named Nathan Drake, the work and imagination of the incredible Amy Hennig (along with Josh Scherr and Neil Druckman). Their vision was realized in game form by a hungry group of talented developers who wanted to prove that their best days were not behind them but in front of them. While the first Uncharted (a result of laborious development work on the hard to code for PS3) was a good game; it wasn't the smash success of say preceding franchise 1st entries like Crash or Jak. This reality drove that team to excellence. The drive to succeed and the hunger to excel made Uncharted 2 not only a great sequel to a good game but a gaming masterpiece that would define not just the PlayStation platform but the gaming landscape as well. In 2009 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves became the consensus Game of the Year and swept awards. The work from this game would lay the groundwork for the type of games, direction and studio identity that came to define Naughty Dog in successive years. With Uncharted 2 Naughty Dog not only raised the bar for itself as a studio but for the industry as a whole. When it came to making blockbuster, action-packed, narrative driven, character driven video games Naughty Dog was the "it" to follow. Since then a lot of studios, as is customary in the industry, borrowed ideas from the Uncharted games to improve aspects within their games to realize their vision. This has generally resulted in improved character driven, narrative driven experiences across the board.

Uncharted 3 followed Uncharted 2 by becoming a smashing success but while great, it wasn't as unanimous in receiving praise as its predecessor. Uncharted 3 simply did not hit all the right notes in as balanced a manner as Uncharted 2 did for great number of critics and gamers. So after Uncharted 3 you could say Naughty Dog cemented itself as an elite studio in the industry (no longer just great). Like others within that elite club however; ND was somewhat unable to repeat the magic twice in a row to the same effect. That is when, from left field, in 2013, comes The Last of US. Expectations for excellence from Naughty Dog after Uncharted 2/3 were a given at the time. But no-one expected that a new IP, relatively secretive, releasing in the middle of the year, with mild marketing would suddenly once again become a generation defining game. The Last of US, the creation of Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley once again found magic. It found that perfect tone pitch to become not just Game of the Year, but as some consider it, Game of the Generation.... gaming's "Citizen's Kane" moment. Certainly, and without a doubt, a generation defining game realized in a brutal new world starring Joel and Ellie.

This incredible level of success and this magic would carry over to their last 2 main entries as well. Uncharted 4 and The Last of US: Part II becoming Games of the Year in the now concluding PS4 era. If there is something to take away from the excellent work in Uncharted 4 is how well Naughty Dog managed to give Nathan Drake a great send-off, and conclude the 4 game saga, aptly titled, a Thief's End, on their terms. TLOU: Part II would also capture the same magic despite being more controversial. Here Neil Druckman uses the game to push the narrative and story of beloved characters to places that folks may find themselves uncomfortable in experiencing or finding joy in. The game needless to say oozed in quality, and was incredibly well made, closing another chapter in the world of The Last of US.

As a fan of their games I've been part of the journey all throughout on this life spanning saga of adventures. I've been happily a part of the community of those games, playing them, enjoying them. I've lived through the hype of following news, gossip, leaks (for good or bad), through the launches etc. All I can say is that I've been a happy partner in all of it - and that I still get as anxious and excited for their games as I did in decades past. I can't wait to see what they do next and wish them all the success in the world - to the devs and creatives minds that have come and gone, to the old and the new, to the few that get no mentions except on credits to those that make the news all the time. It's a team effort over there, and it shows every single time (not just cliche). There is always a special mention tho.... To the man behind the scenes, Evan Wells. This is the guy that has managed that studio through thick and thin to success all these years as studio head. Maybe he'll release a book someday on his life's work managing Naughty Dog for so long. I'll be there to purchase it and read it. Thanks to all the Dogs. To more years of greatness.

I discovered Naughty Dog in 2003/4 thanks to the Jak games, adored them. Then many many years later Drakes's Fortune on PS3 and every single game since then. Each and everyone of them have been such a stellar story experience. The way they were able to create a new IP alongside a flourishing existing IP, just insane. I can't wait for their first PS5 game!

It was my favorite studio during the 360/PS3 era, along with Rockstar.
They used to constantly blow my mind and make me feel like a kid, and i'll always be grateful for these wonderful memories. Playing the Uncharted games at release on the KRP has always been a magical experience, and even replaying them now make me realize how special those games were.

For some reason my experience has been vastly different this Gen, starting with Uncharted 4 way before i even heard the term "SJW". Something just felt off from the start.

Amy Hennig was the one establishing the mix of good game and story, she had a long history of this since before ND. she got pushed out, then Bruce Straley(the guy who made TLOU1 work) got pushed out. dozens of other ND talent got pushed out also. it's as if if there was an ambitious narcissist was climbing over people and forcing out those in his way.

unfortunately ND is now a tale of tragedy, a studio version of the Last Jedi, and we will be stuck with a delusional cult like fan club.

Yeah, i am very aware of ND history. And unfortunately i have to completely agree. I'd add Christophe Balestra to Amy and Bruce though, he always had a huge influence, even though these last two worked on U4 and still couldn't save it from feeling "off" to me.

you’re right that tlou2 had some set pieces but I want a game that has more of them and feels like a legit action movie like James Bond or Indiana Jones.

you’re right that Abby and Lev are the most boring parts of the game and really drag it down. Ellie’s fine revenge section also felt unnecessary

im not sure if I’m on board with another space opera, I’d honestly like a more mythical fantasy type game from them with dungeons and puzzles mixed with hardcore action, like a mature Zelda or WRPG which is lacking in Sony’s first party

No but seriously, how are they the most critically acclaimed studio of all time if even in the title you recognize their greatness just in the last decade? XD

I get that media is different now, so being big in the last decade gives a stronger impression with every other dude giving away game of the year awards, but games have been around 30 plus years, there are several studios that have more consistency across multiple decades.

So nah, they are great but not the goat by any parameters, neither peak or consistency.

Also using the game of the year as a parameter is pretty arbitrary, I could argue they just measure popularity.

If we use metacritic for example, another parameter I don`t like, the results are that Nintendo and Rockstar Games own everyone by a large margin.

So yeah, random statement honestly.

Consistently good at what they do, that is for sure. They probably don't get enough credit for the work they do assisting other of Sony's US teams. They are at the center of technical software, tools, techniques. They are probably the closest developer to a prime ID SOFTWARE, in terms of brilliance.

They may not be the best, but they might be the MVP, if that makes sense. They've become extremely dependable. They have also shown the ability to change, so I suspect their next game, may be a departure from the norm.

How can it be a 10/10,? It starts the same as all other boring games. White endless enemies that can't do anything to you, I don't even know why people like this type of games. What's the fun of endless killing of meaningless enemies? It gets so tiring after 2 minutes.
The last of us has amazing Ai and to drop in white wtf do u mean
Quit gaming FFS u need glasses

U prob like cod and halo where ai never moves and stands and shoots on one spot,
Maybe you like Skyrim where ai is so fucking stupid they run off and stands behind a rock waiting for you to enter it's spot again.

If you are a ms fan that's wanking over its companies it's buying up just get this
None of the games they have had in catalogues has topped charts for years

And Sony naughty has set a lot of bars over the years
From story telling graphics and gameplay.

Just a shame some of you are easy pleased
Or racist or sonyphopic and or gayphobic

What time is it?
My first experience with ND was with the PS2 (never played Crash for some reason). It feels like I really love one out of every three games they make (Jak, Uncharted 2, TLOU). They are tech wizards and there is no denying their appeal. I just wish they'd bring more originality to the table when it comes to mechanics as those tend to feel also-ran and dated. And while I had my share of problems with TLOU2, the Ellie/Joel museum sequence will always stick with me. It was really nice hear how Neil worked that sequence into the game based on his relationship with Troy and Ashley.

I also agree they are a good studio putting out great games.

I'm just disappointed such an acclaimed studio hasn't yet put out PS5 patches for their hit games.

Agree with almost everything, but i would like to say Uncharted 2 is a shit game

Curious on your thoughts as to why? The change of pace enemies were bad but the shooting felt vastly superior to the original and I think it has the best balance of set piece bombast in the series. U3 by comparison just felt exhausting.

If anything has held Naughty Dog games. Its the harddrive. When you replay the game. Thats when the loading screens disguised as cut scenes really stick out. They really need a action playthrough for their games. Where you can play through all the action with non of the story you already know.

Uncharted 4 and TLOU 2 both lecture and shame certain players, but that's your religion so you eat it up I guess.

...dude... seriously? What was my original point? That you don't need to be some woke loser to enjoy these games. But here you are jumping to that conclusion about me. Like... WTF dude, I'm openly transphobic on this forum, I've been told by Evilore I'm not allowed to link to certain far right personalities in the politics forum I like, I was put under the lens of suspicion (don't get mad at me for bringing this up, we're cool as far as I'm concerned) in the Meta thread for linking to Pantherden a few times because they're "white supremacists", I voted Trump both elections... I mean... I have goddamn viewpoints I wouldn't share on here because I'm not sure it'd go well for me, lol. But constantly with you guys you think political affiliation is meant to dictate game taste or movie taste or whatever else. No, people like the Quartering are barely right wing, they're grifters who get money off people who like shallow politics mostly aimed at entertainment bs meanwhile most of the voices I actually like are de-platformed off of Youtube, lol. I'm watching Dlive and Bitchute, chatting on Gab and Parler and yes, Naughty Dog games are FUCKING FUN and I never felt lectured or shamed by them. Good storytelling never feels like a lecture or like it's shaming someone, the themes should be fleshed out but also subtle enough to not be hitting you over the head, I think ND games strike that balance. One of my favorite things about that balance being struck is I can easily argue a game favors my ideology if needed regardless of authorial intent, because I also believe in death of the author.

Alright, back to watching Alex Jones talking about aliens cloning cows and genetically modifying them. You keep thinking you're some far right, counter-culture radical because you didn't like a few lesbians in a video game.

Ehh.... yeah, I find it hard to believe walking simulators are the best games year after year. Seems the professional review class need to play other types of games.
