Digital Foundry: PS5 vs PC in Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Looks like the console makers should be applauded for pulling out all the stops at these price points.
Lets hope that devs are able to create some really great experiences that push the medium forward this coming gen.....pretty exiting stuff!

One thing I find surprising is that the performance mode runs which such high settings and had to make so few compromises to hit a near locked 60fps! That's a tremendous testament to the power of the PS5. Again I"ve said this before but it's worth reiterating: THERE HAS NEVER BEEN AN ASSASSIN'S CREED GAME ON CONSOLE RUN AT 60fps (including all the remasters). To do so with near ultra settings is remarkable.

I'm wondering what differences the PS5 quality makes aside from resolution? Is it a match for PC fully maxed?

It's on the video.

If there is a PS5 Pro down the line, what could it even add?
A larger SSD? That rumored "Remastering Engine" (or whatever it was called)? Full BC?

For what it's worth when PS4 launched, it was about a midrange GPU (7870/660Ti) which were already a gen behind. The PS5 is on par with a 3060Ti/6700XT which is gen-aligned, looks more forward-looking.

I know about RT and other features, I'm only comparing pure raster performance.

PS5 is pretty much exceeding most of my expectations in terms of performance. The value, especially with the 399 dollar digital edition (but even the disc edition too) is pretty phenomenal. Lot of power packed into the price tag. 2080 Super-ish performance right out the gates is awesome.

Always a beast

Who is Joe Miller? Is this someone I am supposed to know?

Always room for improvement. Faster CPU, maybe even more CPU cores, more RAM, larger SSD, better GPU, etc. The wheel keeps rolling.

A lot of folks don’t take into account the customization that goes into the SoC’s that power the PS5 and Series X. People want to cling on to their PC Master Race mentality and not realize they can buy an Xbox or a PlayStation for less than a GPU and enjoy performance that is at the same level or better.

So how does those Virpil and VKB bases and grips and throttles and rudder pedals fare on a console? How do RTSs fare a console with a gamepad? Yeah, that.

There are more genres than just 3rd person action games and racing games and there are many more factors than just the CPU and GPU capabilities.

PCs are superior in every way but cost but cost isn't a factor for everyone.

Buy a Samsung SSD and you get this for free. But if you're getting it on console get it on PS5 and know you're getting great performance.

Damn I thought the PS5 would be closer to a 2070 than a 2080 Super.

Impressive.

It should be said his testing methodology is very favourable to PC as he's taking PS5 performance at 1440p, the lowest res of its dynamic range. It doesnt take a genius to work out that benching PC version at higher than that would require an even faster GPU. But of course that's not possible so he's used the lowest res for his comparison.

So in this game I would say a 3070 would be a good match.

So the least expensive card you can buy is "high end". Gotcha.

And unless you're building a pc from scratch you don't need to spend a grand, even if you are you can build one for less.

First it was xbox fans that were losing it, now its pc fanboys are also getting a bit defensive lol

We get it, ur very upset that a console is getting close to ur crown or even beating it some regards lol

We can see 25-30% flops difference and 25-30% fps difference between 5700 and ps5.
So, console optimization is just a myth

Can't watch it now.
What about the CPU?
What CPU Alex used in his PC? Because I belive this makes a difference allowing the GPU to perform better. If the consoles used Zen 3 I wouldn't ask this question, but they use Zen 2 and this makes a difference.

EDIT: it's my impression or the consoles are under performing on this game? Because RDNA2 cards do VERY well in this game, but comparing the benchmarks the PS5 is performing at the same level as the 5700XT. Or I'm wrong because the consoles are limited to only render 60fps and because of this we can't know how fart hey're going?

Honestly the value of these console is crazy, either the console makers are doing some crazy magic or PC parts are way overpriced.

Fillrate is king baby!

Edit: Just to reiterate: Both the PS5 and Series will escalate beyond these tradidional renders. Heck, the geometry engine (PS5) and mesh shaders (XS) arent even used yet.
This is like the buttom scarps of what we can expect from next gen. And it doesen't seem that many here are capable to fathom the change.. That RAD dev tweet said it best with his dollar bet.
In my mind, this will be the biggest jump since PS2/3.

I installed this yesterday and ran the benchmark tool on it on my PC with a Ryzen 3900x and a 2080 rtx. With everything turned all the way up at 1440p the CPU utilization was lower than expected at 25%-30%, VRAM usage was low to mid 6gb, and the frame rate ranged from 141 to 46. The game seems to be a bit all over the place at least while using the using benchmark tool. I think it averaged mid 80ish fps.
