Vice: 'Dark Souls' Is A Game About Living Under Capitalism In 2020

Golgo 13

The Man With The Golden Dong
I wrote a long political post based on history and politics and capitalism and the realized I was wasting my time.

Instead I’ll just say: Get fucked, Vice.

Vice was super anti-PC edgelord comedy for the longest time. they started off as a super crude and vulgar magazine by Canadians who would do things like make a cocaine issue with a reflective cover that had a mirror (which people would do cocaine off of - you would always find these magazines in the bathroom of any American rock n roll house party in the early 2000s). then around 2016 they made a corporate switch and everything changed.

they had Do's and Don't, which routinely was filled with meanhearted, ironic, racist, sexist, transphobic rants, in every issue. they explored total hedonism. they published "The Vice Guide to All the Races" (2002), which has been scrubbed entirely from the internet. you cannot find it on Google. you cannot find it on Internet Archives. fortunately if you explore Internet Archives you can still find some examples of old school Vice, like the Vice Guide to Partying.

warning this is extremely NSFW

the new woke Vice is a corporately mandated direction after the company was sold to more family friendly media companies and the old owners were kicked out. not long after Di$ney bought a 10% share of the company in 2014, the longtime toxic behaviors and sexual harassment suits reached a boiling point, founder Shane Smith was kicked out, a new CEO was brought in, a woman who ran A+E, Lifetime, etc. and with her, the new direction. by 2017, the D owned over 1/4th of the company, and the toxic history was blowing up in their faces, culminating in a series of NY Times articles on the scandals. they had to go woke to save their company image.

the new direction makes sense from a business perspective: you just invested heavily in a company which's value was artificially inflated by cocaine edgelords and your new investment was being besieged with lawsuits. the social justice route was really the only escape. so they hired these multi haired goons to help with their image. it just makes me laugh, because the old Vice was entirely against a lot of what the new Vice is all about.

its just a privileged ignorant idiot, engaging in historical LARPing, given a huge platform to cover for corporate malfeasance.

communism is stupid as fuck. and the idea that capitalism is the source of all woke is historically ignorant. industrial capitalism is relatively recently, foundational theories for these bloggers starting around 1600. the fact is that private enterprise, pooling together resources, investing in foreign expeditions, harvesting natural resources via industrialism, ALL of these so-called "capitalist" things were practiced by people all over the world hundreds of years before whatever theorists this furry read about on wikipedia lived. it's stupid to pretend these problems of humans would go away if this one economic system didn't exist.

any supporter of communism is a supporter of mass death. communists have killed ten times the people Hitler ever did, and i consider them a threat to life and human rights, based on historical reality.

furthermore the argument that "well that isn't real communism, we can do it better" is bullshit, because couldn't we just say "well that isn't really capititalism, we can do it better"? yet they won't allow for that argument (excuse) against their own side, which is intellectually dishonest. so not only are they in favor of mass murder, they are in favor of lying to you! that's communism for you.

So if I create a product/service through my ingenuity and hard work, and make a profit, then I'm evil???

The author of that article, Janus Rose:

Danger, colored hair!
I've been lectured how stereotypes are harmful but every time i read an article like this, i imagine the author to look something like this picture.

It's either that, or some white beta male with his mouth open.

Poverty is the largest killer world wide including pretty much every capitalist country. Poverty kills more annually every year then communism could ever dream of. In our current technological world with our current abilities poverty only exists because of capitalism. So actually capitalism kills more people then anything in history.

Isn't poverty today on a all time lower and the countries with the higher index of commercial freedom also some of the lowest in poverty rates?...your story doesn't add up.

Extreme poverty is lower but guess what? It's going back up right now. Countries with commercial freedoms also have social systems to keep people out of extreme poverty. People can die of heart disease and it's cause is poverty because they can't afford healthy food or medical care. Depression and stress kill and it's mostly linked to financial issues. Poverty is the number 1 killer worldwide in almost every country. Fact. Period. Every study that looks at the cause of the cause of deaths links almost every major cause of death directly to poverty.
Now I'm no Commie. Better dead then red I always say, but we as a species right now this second have the ability to eliminate poverty. Eliminate all the shitty jobs everyone hates but has to work or they starve and give literally every person a great life. We have been trained by society which is run by the ultra wealth to blame the poor and that necessities of life are not entitled to all but only those who uphold the current system of bullshit and death. We could live in a literal Paradise if we all decided that we don't have to be better then someone else to feel better about ourselves. Now I really don't care who thinks what about me or these ideas, but just know every day there is more people thinking like me and less people thinking like you and one day the scale will tip.
You have shit for brains.
Thanks for the thoughtful criticism. You can be sure I'll put much thought into it.

No we could have cooler things and everyone could have them. You know like food water and shelter.
Edit
Also it's a complete falsehood that capitalism drives anything except inequality, racism, poverty and death.
We can still have all that to everyone, if we burn socialism to the ground! :D

Perhaps I should have posted this in the politics section...

You are making two big assumptions. First, that capitalism creates poverty, and second, that communism and/or socialism eliminates poverty. The most basic crux of capitalism is the idea that people respond to incentives. Capitalism creates equitable conditions for both the producer and the consumer. It also applies value to to a person's labor whereby it can be exchanged for something else. It also creates conditions such that people can decide how much of a good or service to produce based on demand. Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty and increased peoples quality of living. We live in a world today where people can specialize in different fields and enjoy having a lot of luxuries. We are no longer as a species living hand to mouth. There are people across the globe who still live that way but that number gets lower day by day. Often I see the argument that socialism has never been tired properly despite the numerous examples of that being the case. There are some in the US that would make the claim that capitalism has never been allowed to work on its own with all of the government subsidies, welfare programs such as social security, and hinderances to free trade. All of that to say there is more to the discussion than simply stating that because you don't like some aspects of the modern world we live in that capitalism the the culprit.

I understand why communism and socialism are in vogue right now. It is very easy to appeal to people's sense of perceived injustice when other people have more than they do. I would challenge you to think beyond that. If you're really open to ideas, give Hayek's "The Road to Serfdom" a read. It is a really accessible and does well to detail why socialism fails. Hayek was a renown economist. I've read everything from Smith to Marx. Don't just fall back on a popular talking point-engage with good source material and challenge your views.

Jesus Christ, go read a couple of books and learn history instead of making a fool of yourself on the net.
Like? Explain what you are saying.

I'm very open to ideas but are you? I'll see if the library has that book. See the issue is extreme wealth inequality is growing at a rapid rate. CEO pay is growing at a rate of 9-1 of worker pay. It is unsustainable but so is capitalism. Here's the thing. I don't believe in capitalism, socialism or communism. Everyone's rebukes and rebuttal is quite literally irrelevant to the system I support.

Sure...

This story makes sense if it was written by an NPC in the Dark Souls world.
The game seems miserable when you sit around beating your fists on the ground. But if you’re able to learn from your mistakes and take your time and listen to the world around you, you can start as a skeleton with a wooden club and loincloth and still become a possible god who will decide the fate of the world.

Pro tip: You’ll never learn to play on normal if you just sit around whining about a lack of an easy mode.

I try to be. Less opportunity to read now than when I was younger but am always trying to learn something new.

I sort of get where you’re coming from, but Dark Souls is so much more fabulously nihilistic than that. There’s no saving this world.

It actually tells us that no matter what you do, everything ends. Everything dies. All empires fall. All gods are vanquished. The fire always dies. Everything decays and withers. Everything slides into entropy.

And I fucking love it that they have the balls to stick with that the whole way through.

That’s the thing the vacuous individual who wrote that article completely fails to understand, probably because they can’t deal with the idea of a story that ends in such an entropic, fatalistic manner.

Very Japanese. Very cool.

Nobody tell him that poverty is still a thing in communist/socialist countries..
Except (nearly) everybody equally suffers. Such progress.

So, what is that magical system you support?
Because it has to be magic for the same reasons Capitalism isn't perfect and Communism doesn't work.

They are also the biggest Consoomers and target audience for the megacorporations they hate so much. you can bet they collect game of thrones funko pops, subscribed to Disney's monthly avengers geek crates, pre ordered collectors edition Cyberpunk 2077. You can't make this shit up boys.

Oh yeah, totally! Not trying to imply Dark Souls doesn't fucking rock; because it does and to say other wise is heresy. Meant to insinuate that if the writer of that article wants to be reductive about Dark Souls ( because this is what politics is in 2020 for some reason) just to fit an agenda than I'll just be reductive of their opinion.

Saying capitalism isn't good, is fine by me. I don't know because I don't have all the information; but to say that it's evil is fucking stupid. Why? Because Capitalism gave us Dark Souls, and again; Dark Souls fucking ROCKS!

I'm also pretty high and rambling. Sorry.

I believe we as a species are capable of true greatness, but I can tell none of you are ready for real change. Like I said, every day there are more people thinking like me and less like you and eventually the scales will tip. When they do, don't worry we are not mad at you for thinking so small.

You are confusing democracy with capitalism. So no, you are not paraphrasing Churchill either.

Omg.

A colloquial use of the term ‘paraphrase’ is perfectly acceptable in the given context.

Churchill‘s thoughts on democracy are totally suitable to be applied to capitalism.

It‘s called ‘a joke’ or witticism. He was famous for them.

Unbunch.

And therein lies your first problem. We as a species are human. With flaws. Desires, fear, hope, arrogance and all the others mixed in and spread out over billions of people. And you're displaying a great amount of arrogance right here.

Any ANY system you can come up with will have humans in it. Any ANY system WILL BE EXPLOITED.

And that can be for the best of people. You know how corruption starts? It doesn't start with a mustache twirling *evil* man. It starts with one really, really good guy just going *You know what? I've done so much for the people I deserve a little bit*

That's it. Nothing else is needed. That alone is enough to crumble any so well thought of system. You're not dealing with robots. You're dealing with humans. And no, NO FUCKING SYSTEM can prevent that. You won't reach perfection.

Ever.

The closest you will get is not with a system. It's with a society that has strong ethics and morals. That's it. In the end the only conclusion your thought system has is the one any other such has already. The realization that you can't make millions of people do what you want them to, so you go to the only other place socialism already went. Force and subjugation.

Edit: Also considering your post is already half a threat. I don't think you're far from that kind of thinking.

Colloquial paraphrasing in text is bad because jokes or witticisms are much better conveyed in speech. Also just seems like a cover-up for a common misquote.

Can we please move this thread off the gaming section. Some guys here are spinning their little complacent heads a bit too much.
