Vice: 'Dark Souls' Is A Game About Living Under Capitalism In 2020

I believe we as a species are capable of true greatness, but I can tell none of you are ready for real change. Like I said, every day there are more people thinking like me and less like you and eventually the scales will tip. When they do, don't worry we are not mad at you for thinking so small.
What a tall horse dude...watch out when getting off.

Vice was super anti-PC edgelord comedy for the longest time. they started off as a super crude and vulgar magazine by Canadians who would do things like make a cocaine issue with a reflective cover that had a mirror (which people would do cocaine off of - you would always find these magazines in the bathroom of any American rock n roll house party in the early 2000s). then around 2016 they made a corporate switch and everything changed.

they had Do's and Don't, which routinely was filled with meanhearted, ironic, racist, sexist, transphobic rants, in every issue. they explored total hedonism. they published "The Vice Guide to All the Races" (2002), which has been scrubbed entirely from the internet. you cannot find it on Google. you cannot find it on Internet Archives. fortunately if you explore Internet Archives you can still find some examples of old school Vice, like the Vice Guide to Partying.

warning this is extremely NSFW

the new woke Vice is a corporately mandated direction after the company was sold to more family friendly media companies and the old owners were kicked out. not long after Di$ney bought a 10% share of the company in 2014, the longtime toxic behaviors and sexual harassment suits reached a boiling point, founder Shane Smith was kicked out, a new CEO was brought in, a woman who ran A+E, Lifetime, etc. and with her, the new direction. by 2017, the D owned over 1/4th of the company, and the toxic history was blowing up in their faces, culminating in a series of NY Times articles on the scandals. they had to go woke to save their company image.

the new direction makes sense from a business perspective: you just invested heavily in a company which's value was artificially inflated by cocaine edgelords and your new investment was being besieged with lawsuits. the social justice route was really the only escape. so they hired these multi haired goons to help with their image. it just makes me laugh, because the old Vice was entirely against a lot of what the new Vice is all about.
Yep, Vice used to be so raw back in the day. First discovered it in 2002 when I went to art school in SF at, you guessed it, a house party. These days not so raw, both Vice and SF. Shame.

Yes, dear. You’ve seen through my cunning web of deceit about one of Churchill’s most famous phrases. You’re so very very clever. I hope your dissertation is going well.
To paraphrase Churchill
In Economics, as in life, it is often necessary, when some cherished scheme has failed, to take up the best alternative open, and if so, it is folly not to work for it with all your might.

No we could have cooler things and everyone could have them. You know like food water and shelter.
Edit
Also it's a complete falsehood that capitalism drives anything except inequality, racism, poverty and death.
That is false, things would not be advanced because you need a reward system so people will go to school for 8-10 years. You need a reward system for people to make new technology. You think Elon Musk worked hard for electric vehicles for free? If that’s the case they should cost 100 dollars. No one becomes a doctor because they have a big heart. The infrastructure would break down as soon as engineers, scientists, that have already been to school start retiring because you couldn’t fill the void. People wouldn’t work if the government paid for everything.

Stop with the bullshit you know nothing about apparently. You are not 10 years old hoping everything will be paid for you. Act like a damn adult. The reason we have money to give to the needy and unfortunate is through capitalism.

Nothing is perfect and I can give you more examples of you need, or we can have a longer discussion about it.

Poverty is the largest killer world wide including pretty much every capitalist country. Poverty kills more annually every year then communism could ever dream of. In our current technological world with our current abilities poverty only exists because of capitalism. So actually capitalism kills more people then anything in history.

You are making the profoundly dumb mistake of throwing out the good aspects and focusing entirely on the bad.

I assume you are conveniently not doing this for whatever system you'd prefer to put in place.

It's easy to say "the current system fails in many ways and it must be replaced by something else".

Far more difficult to conceive and then implement the something else.

There's always a certain ridiculous arrogance about people who think they know better but have very little experience or knowledge. Just a vague idea that things are bad and need to get better but no idea how that becomes reality.

You overestimate us as a species and give us too much credit. If you are young then prepare to be badly badly, let down. If you are old and still feel so optimistic then congratulations on your blissful ignorance.

The scales will never tip. Never. Even if we get rid of scarcity and reduce the population down to a manageable level.

Burn capitalism down and be king of the ashes. Well done. Then what?

There has never been a human society not build on pain and suffering and death and there never will be.

At the very least under capitalism you can say that relatively more people live relatively better lives than at any other point in human history. Look at metrics such as life expectancy etc.

I don't doubt that one day it will all come crashing down but whatever replaces it will be no better and the alternatives we've already tried are demonstrably worse.

Eliminate all the shitty jobs everyone hates but has to work or they starve and give literally every person a great life.

The main thing that stands out to me there is that some of these "shitty jobs" are necessary. So what do you do in a world where everyone can say "nah that's a shitty job not my problem".

Is working a farm easy?

What about dealing with all the shit and piss that 7.5 billion people produce?

If we all have great lives as a base level for each person then how exactly is stuff going to get done? I could sleep and fuck and do drugs all day. To hell with videogames even. Daddy government has me covered and no I don't think I will take out the bins or do the dishes thank you very much.

Somebody has to do society's dishes.

You're stuck either forcing people to do those jobs or putting up some insanely appealing incentives.

After all, I already have a "great life" by default so you're gonna have to offer something spectacular to get me out of my wanking chariot every morning.

Quick reply to everything you said right here. First automation. Most jobs currently can be entirely automated, and if we are not dealing with money any more this is not an issue.
Second and this is the important part. We are at the technological ability to start this long process of making this world a good place for everyone. This isn't an overnight idea. I'm saying this goal is actually something in reach of humanity. It's something we can invision with technology just a few steps ahead of what we have now. We just have to take the first step.

I forgot, socialism has made all progress for technology since life began!

Or, every country under socialism has either been killing its own people or slowly progressing into capitalism because it's an inherently flawed ideology.
India and china ( 1/3 of the world ) are socialistic first, capitalistic second. Right to property is not a guaranteed right. Majority of countries are more socialistic than capitalistic.

And these countries are now at the forefront of tech.

Oh come on, if all is just Marxist/Soviet real socialism... public libraries? Socialism, Medicare/Medicaid/NHS? Socialism... a state funded Army/Navy/Airforce? Socialism.

Between laissez-faire capitalism and communism/real socialism there is a huge chasm. Then again politics out of gaming... forums ;).

Yeah, and then there are blatant examples where they meet.

Best example is military, most soldiers come from poor background, they are hired from poor regions and poor states, because they can hardly find other remunerative jobs. It is a socialistic enterprise.
On the other end the gear hardware of soldiers feeds a capitalistic profit churning industry.

Wait. Do you seriously believe that MOST jobs can be CURRENTLY automated?

As in, right now?

That is so unrealistic I don't even know where to begin.

How would we deal with immigration and population movement in this new world of yours?

All jobs are automated. Everyone has "a great life". Why the hell would anyone want to live in, say the North of England or Scotland etc with freezing winters and shorter daylight hours? Surely everyone would prefer a nice house down in the south of France or Portugal etc. How would that work.

Same deal with the automation etc. Who is going to perform maintenance? Who's gonna govern? Will we be getting rid of spectator sports etc?

What if its like Barcelona vs Real Madrid in the Champions League Final 2055 but there's only 70k allowed in the stadium how will we do things like decide who gets tickets?

Once again how will you offer incentives for people to get up at 6am on a dark Manchester winter morning to go and fix the automated farm equipment when life is already "great". Who would even want or need to do that?

Its completely, laughably, unrealistic.

Haha, I live in Canada with very short summers and I love the seasons. I would never live somewhere without 4 seasons. Yes we currently have the ability to automate most shit jobs. Automation is frowned upon now because it takes away jobs so very little effort is currently put into it. I've said it's a long process and a major part is changing the way you think about things. Every great human achievement was laughed at and called unrealistic until it was achieved. There is no limit when profitability isn't a factor. Also I can assure you when your life doesn't suck you won't really care about a football game.

So entertainment such as football will just go away because people won't care anymore because life is so great?

What about video-games, music, movies? Just manufactured by AIs or something?

Fuck, I never realised stuff that people really love such as sports will just be going away because nobody will care because life is so great. Hahaha.

You love Canada. Great.
Thats not what I asked though.
How would the population be managed when, say, millions of Brits decide that while life might be good in this jobless society it would be better to live in Spain or Portugal?

Would "human achievement" even be a thing anymore. Nobody needs to work. Nobody wants to work. There is no incentive to excell at anything. So much so that sports won't even exist.

Like I said, it's laughably naive.

Would there be laws to prevent, say, a region of Europe from going back to an old capitalist system or would rebellions or uprisings like that be mercilessly crushed?

Look into what Science says about why we Love sports so much. Most of those reasons go away in a much better world.
If Brits want to move they can move now, but people tend to enjoy the familiar. That's why this entire concept is confusing you. It's j so different from what we have now. I can assure you if the entire planet decided to move to Spain we could fit there quite comfortably.
You are also misinformed about why certain things like movies and music exist. The best of all these things are filled with passion by those who create them. Monetary gain shouldn't be the driving factor in science and art and for most people isn't. The jobs that are necessary are done by those who just want to do it. You can tell because we still have teachers even though it's hard work and the pay sucks. All of our greatest accomplishments have been for passion, to help humanity, our just plain curiosity. Imagine a world where you and everyone had time and energy to actually discover your passion.

No sports though. Sounds like a shit world.

Why would I bother expending energy to discover my passion when I have a great life by default? Just seems like a waste of time. Some robot is cleaning my shit and doing my dishes and I don't have to do a thing.

Kinda sounds like this amazing world of yours would need a significant amount of brainwashing to get things off the ground.

What if I just decide I want something different or I just want more for myself. Like I see on TV some guy living on a beach with a beautiful wife and a lovely house and I want that for myself?

Am I just not allowed? Or is the brainwashing so completely effective that I just wouldn't even be able to conceive a desire for those things?

What would we do with people who think differently or who just want more?

I think you may be more than a little delusional.

Like in 30 years when some of the machines break down and we need solutions but nobody has been getting practical, functional, education for three decades.

So while we are all pretty decent at making art or whatever nobody knows how to stop sewage flowing into the streets or stop a major disaster etc.

I guess our robot overlords will be able to stop earthquakes and other natural disasters... or maybe they just want tell us what's going on outside our little bubble at all.

You'll be happy though with your box apartment and your daily rations and your state approved "entertainment" won't you? *cocks rifle* Won't you?

Don't worry lads the entire world will be automated and humans won't need to do anything at all except live their best lives. Everything will be automated and nothing could possibly go wrong.

I mean heck your right, we will sit in our 200k home that the government provides, use are food vouchers for food at Walmart, not having to do anything but collect that free money from the government. Not ever realizing why every socialist country falls apart. Getting nice fat and stupid so those in government own us.

Methinks somebody needs to be reminded why paradise is a lie.

Perfection demands exclusion of all elements that would sully its purity, ergo it must be protectively encircled. Paradise is a walled garden, a prison for the virtuous.

Even if those within its utopian demesne are blissfully ignorant of all that lies beyond its boundaries, those things, those forces will still exist. And Utopia can only last so long as those walls hold to keep them out. Its cosmic gentrification if you like; out of sight, out of mind.

So, ultimately Paradise has to be a prison for the mind as much as the body. Desire, curiosity, sympathy for anything beyond the walls cannot be tolerated, the only alternative being a brutal judgementalism of what what lies there, to think of it as unclean and untouchable.

Here's the real kicker though: Whether this "forbidden" knowledge -understanding the paradoxical nature of inhabiting such a place and considering it utopian- is known by all, or just by a select few (priesthood, government, whoever) doesn't make the picture any prettier.

Its still founded on selfishness and elitism, whether its by an uncaring populace or a corrupted leadership.
