Vice was super anti-PC edgelord comedy for the longest time. they started off as a super crude and vulgar magazine by Canadians who would do things like make a cocaine issue with a reflective cover that had a mirror (which people would do cocaine off of - you would always find these magazines in the bathroom of any American rock n roll house party in the early 2000s). then around 2016 they made a corporate switch and everything changed.
they had Do's and Don't, which routinely was filled with meanhearted, ironic, racist, sexist, transphobic rants, in every issue. they explored total hedonism. they published
"The Vice Guide to All the Races" (2002), which has been scrubbed entirely from the internet. you cannot find it on Google. you cannot find it on Internet Archives. fortunately if you explore Internet Archives you can still find some examples of old school Vice, like the
Vice Guide to Partying.

the new woke Vice is a corporately mandated direction after the company was sold to more family friendly media companies and the old owners were kicked out. not long after Di$ney bought a 10% share of the company in 2014, the longtime toxic behaviors and sexual harassment suits reached a boiling point, founder Shane Smith was kicked out, a new CEO was brought in, a woman who ran A+E, Lifetime, etc. and with her, the new direction. by 2017, the D owned over 1/4th of the company, and the toxic history was blowing up in their faces, culminating in a series of NY Times articles on the scandals. they had to go woke to save their company image.
A media company built on subversion and outlandishness was unable to create “a safe and inclusive workplace” for women, two of its founders acknowledge.

the new direction makes sense from a business perspective: you just invested heavily in a company which's value was artificially inflated by cocaine edgelords and your new investment was being besieged with lawsuits. the social justice route was really the only escape. so they hired these multi haired goons to help with their image. it just makes me laugh, because the old Vice was entirely against a lot of what the new Vice is all about.
