Three sources? Giantbomb Jeff who picked up an NVME SSD by the heatsink and a guy from LeStream. Who's the third?

Even if you give me three, out of hundreds, it's irrelevant unless we know the conditions. If it's on standby yet still doing something, then the situation is perfectly normal and shows the thermal paste and cooling system are doing their job.

Again, the only "concern" here is coming from people who will never own the console. It's FUD, pure and simple.

Jeff Grubb is the third. Btw. Giantbomb guy said whole XSX is hot ( and showed with his arm and in additional comment by other podcaster: it's a preproduction unit ) in stand by mode alongside with SSD.

Jeff Grubb doesn't say that at all though. And Giantbomb Jeff is holding the SSD and you can even see him grab it by the heatsink. The whole discussion was the about the SSD and if you think he's talking about the console then you are misrepresenting his comment to console war.

If you want a third source then Ars Technica wrote;

"Yet even with the console powered off, Series X stills dissipate heat from that top vent, owing to its optional "always on" mode, and I learned that by resting the gamepad on the venting array overnight, then picking up the controller and feeling that it was warm (not hot) 10 hours after I'd powered the console down."

But then they also say heat dissipation is adequate and within the realms of normal. I feel this issue is being made an issue by, again, people who would never buy one anyway.

Agreed, they are hot INSIDE a cabinet because they are PC INNER parts. That card is external, how do you think people are supposed to remove it from the slot if they can get burnt? Like I previously said, so much for being able to change it with the system on.

True. But I see a whole number of issues with an external card (theft, mechanical, etc). But if the card feels hot, or worst burning hot, it won't survive in the USA where third party liability is a thing.

UK retailer Currys has released some interesting stats around their next gen console launches. Looks like demand for PS5 is quite a bit stronger than both Xbox consoles combined.

weird. The source of the article is not available. Can’t find anything where the retailer actually says this.
Did someone find a source for this?

It contains quotes from Curry's 'Head of Gaming', but it is not clear where he made these quotes.

It should be noted that the 90,000 more was for pre-order registrations. Most were likely to have been disappointed and not able to get one. In terms of sales it may be closer as I imagine supply of both are similar

It was interesting to see the console pre-order battle play out and for PlayStation 5 to take the lead, but I wouldn’t underestimate the benefits of Xbox Series X which were not far behind PlayStation in pre-order sales

It could but it doesn't (it can't render more frames and not show them, can it? Pretty impractical). Therefore the bc mode does not fully exploit the full potential of the gpu and remains to be seen what a full flight series x game does with the heat of the hardware.

Rarely you'll see a game rendering at precisely 60 FPS. It's my impression that games render above that to have some headroom in order to maintain a locked 60 FPS output. I assume the GPU is running more or less unlocked, which would also explain the XSX getting warm, even though it's "only" running BC games.

I suppose you think it's normal to get burnt trying to remove a memory card from a console slot.

How is that in any way relevant to what I wrote regarding fans and hot air?

I think we'll start to see more of the retailer stats like this, with PS5 significantly ahead. Whether that is due to demand, stock or combination of both. The reasons to buy a PS5 right now fare far more compelling if you believe in next gen games (and what's wrong with you if you don't).

Since Sony is really investing into the 3d audio and Mark Cerny talking about the HRTF, how have they thought about implementing personal HRTF? He mentioned "sending" photos of our ears and them using neural network to figure out the HRTF. Are there any companies doing these HRTF tests? Hopefully they will mention the workflow close to launch

IMO you're putting too much importance to 5-10 title available on next gen console only but at the same time context is perfect for new consoles...
i know the sample is bad (but they are news about it at national level too) but arround me but people have stacked a lot of money because of COVID and "risk free" options to spend of it for leisure are currently in favor of them.

IIRC, there will be profiles already in place. So probably you will take some kind of "audio test" and then a profile will be assigned to you based on your results.

4-5 hours is a lot more than I was expecting.

You know what IF Astros Playroom was like the secret game which included all the detailed info about the PS5, with clues hidden throughout the game?, look at the level names, each one named like each strength of the PS5, maybe if we looked deeper we could find all the detailed info?, I am sure later down the line we will look back at this and think how did we miss this (like the xbox in the backgroud in Phils interview).

The Series X fan pushes the hot air out of the top, sucking it from the heatsink/insides?

This one is from 17 hours ago.

I don't think the consoles will be too hot. My PS4 Pro after 1 hour of play or so was warm to the touch, but did not feel as hot to my hand as, say, my mug full of hot coffee. The systems will put off heat, but will have quiet fans, and will be warm/hot to the touch. It shouldn't be an issue.

The boxes will be housing very powerful silicon, lots of memory, flash storage, big power supplies, etc. All of that generates a lot of heat. No way the boxes will not be hot. Not an issue really, unless it impacts the longevity of the console or overheats, which I doubt they will.

The Xboxes have a unique aspect in all this, which is their Expansion Cards. Those SSDs will get hot, as will the internal SSDs in both consoles and whatever M2 drive can be installed inside the PS5. But users won't feel how hot the internal SSDs get.

The external nature of the Xbox Expansion Card (internal drive turned external) will inevitably result in someone playing games from it for hours, getting it hot, then unplugging the card and reacting "wow thats hot." Still not an issue, but it will of course surprise a few people who don't know about this stuff.

Sony is already doing it with some of its headphones, I know my Wh 1000XM2 do it and you basically scan your hear and head with your front camera then it auto caliber the headset.

Sony already has an app to let users customize their audio for some headphones.

If I remember correctly, and it's early AM where I am now so maybe I won't, the people using XSX/XSS are playing BC games at the moment. If that's true, it really shouldn't be stressing the system enough to cause any heating issues. The XBOX One X handles BC quite well and is pretty quiet. I would want to reserve judgement on this issue until I have one. There are more than enough users out there who want to just take the first potential negative someone puts out there about team Green or team Blue's product and run wild with it. That alone is reason enough to just sit back and wait. It is five weeks until launch and, assuming I can keep my pre order for XSX, I'll find out for myself.
I like eating many things, crow isn't one.

Interestingly, I recently noticed something with my X, which I barely use and is mostly left in an off/low power state. It sits next to my PS4 PRO which is in the same state directly underneath my TV on top of a gaming style desk. Even in this state, the XBOX One X is warm to the touch on top/middle (horizontal position) while the PS4 PRO is properly cool. The warm spot is there, but only directly on the top middle. It is cool to touch everywhere else.

I am sorry but it's not possible to buy Rocket League on the store using a Phone. You must have dreamed it.

:messenger_winking:
It is I bought dying light and its season pass on ps4 and launch the download at 300km of distance.

Edit: besides not counting you can basically buy and download to your ps4 (as long as it's on standby mode) from anything that has a web browser.

I don’t think it’s a new feature, I’m pretty sure I remember buying Rocket League on the PlayStation Store through my phone years ago and being able to start the download from there

Directly is different you don't have to go to the profile then click on purchased, download etc... they just make it a lot easier nothing new but easier.

All I've heard for years is how PC gamers basically have to build a fridge around their towers to stop the whole damn thing melting through the table... so am entirely unsurprised that consoles with this kind of power would be pretty hot too.

Heat only becomes an issue when it forces the console to shut down, and there's no evidence the XSX is doing that (that Twitter screenshot is super fucking fake).

It does feel like Sony may have gone to town on their cooling solution more than Msft, and I can see the Ps5 ultimately being cooler than the XSX, but not to the extent that the XSX has any issues with it.

There's been a lot of FUD spread about cooling over both consoles now, because it's the kind of thing that sounds disastrous - which is just the BEST news for the console warriors. It's all bullshit though.

I read it slightly differently to you and he specifically states that you would have to recompile to get certain features.

Agreed, and considering how compact the Xbox is inside, how densely packed everything is, its bound to get hot. PS5 seems if anything like an over precaution towards cooling. Huge box, lots of vents, lots of room inside for all the hot internals. Airflow was clearly key in the design. They even built that base into the design to ensure the console has some airflow space below the console even when "laid flat" but actually floating/lifted.

Will be fascinating to see that teardown.

I tried too in the thread about it
But the problem here are not df words but how they are used when readed with specific mindsets (like often)

RGT on PS5 if it has infinite cache.

I doubt either PS5 or XSX has that. Microsoft already disclosed their Specs at Hot chips. Sony did the "Road to PS5" in march. 95% of specs are known to everyone . The remaining 5% are the details of the known parts of PS5 GPU, CPU and SSD.

Edit: by details I mean L1 L2 and L3 caches, RT figures, cache scrubbers details and other I/O full dive.

Yea, but I think he's saying GCN mode is High Class PR.

Edit:
If Ricard said it had RDNA 2 features were disable I would understand,
but to say it's running in GCN mode without IPC improvement, sounds a bit like nonsense to me.

It does, but it'll probably take into account worldwide ambient room temperature. I suspect even it might have the fans whirring when you're sat playing in 40°C plus temperatures in some sunbleached city while the GPU and SSD are going full tilt.
