Digital Foundry Xbox Series X Back-Compat Tests "Hugely Impressive"

I hoped XSX will run hitman 2 at 4K 60fps, but after looking at benchmarks it makes sense why there are dips below 60fps. Guys we would need something like 3080 to really run all current gen games at 4K 60fps.

Remember that they run the distant animations at half-rate on XBX to improve the framerate.

There's going to be a lot of salt surrounding Xbox this gen. Not only because of the judo flips Microsoft is pulling on PS, in regards to studio acquisition and consumer relations, but now we even have features that are unavailable on PC's, such as the game suspension & instant resume. Yes, salt shall be pouring in from all corners.

Yep. I'm just going to have to change my 10+ year old entertainment system (May try to see if I can work some magic with the shelves first). It was kind of due for it anyway, but it's absolutely obnoxious.

I actually can fit them horizontally, but... yeah. These consoles look awful horizontal.

Seems like a lot of work and I do quite like my current AV cabinet. Of course when they made the cabinet they weren't expecting MS and Sony to develop a console the size of a skyscraper or if they had, I am sure shelf space would be a little more generous :messenger_sunglasses:

Feel free to point out where my post was untruthful.
Because you don’t get what optimize means. Non of these games are optimize for the Xbox Series X these examples are results from unoptimized games for the system. So if a game like Gears 5 which is going to be optimized for Series X, that game is expected to look better than the ultra settings PC version and offer 4k@120hz HDR

Do you need patches on Steam when you upgrade your rig?
Given how the modern game development has gone largely multiplat and highly streamlined, performance boost flops by flops without any patch should be guaranteed.
I just feel Xbox's target sets too high and too ambitious at 4k 60fps with a dated hardware comparing what Nvidia is offering now, should have gone 1440p 60fps like the PS5 does with Demon Souls.
funny because people are spending $1500 on 3090s and still can’t get a stable 60fps on flight simulator. The game isn’t optimize for the 3090 either. And CPUs will vary that result. Susing PC isn’t at all a good example

Cool for the base back compat.
and it will improve like with the back compat on Xbox one.
when some games have specific patch it will be glorious.

Microsoft did a great job here, Only thing they needs to do now is give Sega a licence for Ferarri in their games and revive my old digital copy of Outrun and do a little 4k upscaling on that and I will forget about Scalebound...

I think that this is going to be great for a load of my old X1 games I haven't much played let alone completed.

I did read something about a 'boost' mode for PS5, would be great if it could do something similar to what MS have implemented. I mean, I haven't even unwrapped Sekiro yet!

I fail to see the downsides of BC improvements, I can only see positives, so am struggling a little to see why some folk seem to be in outrage mode.

Looks good to me. I guess individual game patches will be the most exciting things especially for the 360 gen. Can't wait to get into the details of it all.

Judging from the performance numbers on Hitman 2, Sekiro, and Monster Hunter World. The GPU is indeed around a 2080 Super level, especially considering these titles are not taking advantage of the 25%+ ipc gain of RDNA 2 .

Sometimes it feels like there’s no pleasing the neogaf community...

Not sure how any comments could be negative based on this video. It’s makes all your old games look better, run better and load faster. What’s there not to love?!

I do agree. This goes quite a ways above what X1X enhancements did and that was well received by everyone. Of course not all games can benefit unless patched to unlock frame rates etc. but there seems to be enough here to get us off to a great start.

Just keep in mind that most people who game dont come on biased gaming forums and will ultimately make their own opinions. Thats the worst part about this place. These people reach like crazy in hopes to make your choice look bad when in reality, all our minds are already made up and the peoples whos minds aren't, dont post on gaming forums anyway. Useless fanboy wars that literally leads nowhere.

That benchmark used ultra settings on PC. Xbox One X settings were below that.
The Xbox Series X is also not using the 25%+ IPC gain of RDNA 2. Taking that into consideration it should perform around 2080 Super levels if the settings were the same.

That's low/medium. It's still console settings, just uncapped. Remember there's a huge gulf in performance for different settings levels:

The video i posted is max settings.

EDIT. Oh you mean the console version will be running at lower settings, i get you.

Just a note, as some people are ignoring the fact that these games that we are seeing, are all in bc mode, no Xbox series enhanced Xbone games were shown

those games don't use feratures of 2080 too.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
Impressive by xbox. Those are some really slick features. We know virtually nothing about ps5's U.I. Kudos to microsoft.

I'm not referring to Mesh shaders or VRS , just the IPC gains from the RDNA 2 architecture over GCN. Those games on PC are fully taking advantage of Turing IPC and on top of that are not running in any sort of BC layer.

Oh dont worry. What sony has to show is so good that it will literally blow peoples eyes out. Thats why theyre so quiet about actually showing you anything. They dont wanna be responsible for hospitalizing all those people with blown out eye balls. Its quite nice of them actually.
