I don't think the two opinions are necessarily mutually exclusive. Let's say for example you were seeing Scarlett Johansson and when you finally got down to business you were treated to an evening of dead fish sex. While I'm sure it would still be a fairly pleasant evening all things considered, it would also be fair to say that she was being a little "lazy" in her execution of the deed and to wonder how much better it could have been.

Tbh I'd still be pretty happy about the experience, laziness be damned.

Me too! They say that fat chicks are more fun in bed because they put in more effort, but...

Something I was wondering. It’s interesting that 2/3rds of this collection are native port + emulation layer, but Super Mario 64 is complete emulation, with new elements ‘injected’ via LUA script (I’m going to pretend I know what that is).

If it had taken the other approach, 16:9 and 1080p would have been on the table. Add in that this is a far better emulation effort than we’ve ever seen from Nintendo before (Wii and Wii U VC), and something altogether different...

That kind of makes me think Nintendo has plans for N64 emulation, and when I when I think of 720p emulation, I think of the meager, but solid NES and SNES Classic hardware. I wonder if it’s possible that an N64 Classic could be around the corner? Certainly enough time has passed for one, and it’s maybe more feasible for a cheaper product.

As much as we all seem kind of... done, with these classic reproductions, having had our fill. I could see a lot of excitement for a mini N64 that played all those classic games. Doubly so if Microsoft is on board to deliver the Rare classics, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be.

Or maybe Nintendo just thought 720p and 4:3 were fine, and more appropriate for such an older game? Maybe they want to do N64 games on NSO? Extrapolating data from the utterly vague, and getting hyped is always a bad decision, but it’s intriguing to think about.
I'll admit I don't even notice a chunk of my tv isn't being used when I'm playing SM64.

Obviously I've not had a need to charge the controller yet but damn it feels so good in the hand and the button weighting is perfect. The sticks are good with a nice travel. I got on just fine with the joycons but when you use the pro controller you realise what's missing.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Having seen the results of Nintendo's "lazy" Galaxy port and how astonishingly good it looks and sounds, I must now demand ports of F-Zero GX, the Fire Emblems, Baten Kaitos, and DKC Returns.

Honestly, I kinda wouldn't even care about an F-Zero sequel if we got a spruced up GX. I genuinely don't know how they could improve that game.

They could make it easier for babbies like me

I ended up paying some scalper on eBay for the pins. I’m not one to usually do that, but SMB is what got me into video games. I wish Nintendo did a better job of rewarding loyal fans.

Trying to hunt down that sexy Ori collectors edition, with both games on it, but it seems that it's Japan only. Was hoping for a WW release. Damn, would love those games in my collection.

Squeenix region locking FFCC fucking sucks. Its already kinda meagre in the EU right now for online play, this game's online is gonna be deceased in a month or two over here.

I’m more offended by the lack of couch co-op.

I can’t remember if it was posted here that the Mass Effect Trilogy remaster wouldn’t be on the Switch or at least not at the same time as other platforms. Wouldn’t it be awesome if EA put SSX on the Switch? I would pay their exorbitant port prices on Switch for that franchise.

The SSX franchise was amazing, and I would absolutely love to see them on Switch. Now I’m going to have the Its Tricky song stuck in my head.

People whine about Sunshine too much. Can a few of the missions benefit from a pass of polish? Absolutely. The example in the OT of that Yoshi one, is hilarious, and spot-on. This is a roughness that never happened in Nintendo games before or after.

Somehow, this gets extrapolated out, by a few, to the entire game being frustrating and broken, though, and that’s just not the case. You have another pitch perfect set of controls and movement, and genuinely great, even awesome gameplay, world design, and missions throughout the game.

What it can be, is challenging. Unlike every 3D Mario since, it isn’t set to perma easy mode, with slight spikes into medium. That isn’t a bad thing, as many of my favorite Marios are from this period, but this is a different kind of Mario that asks your skills to be up to snuff, and your attention fully focused.

When I see people going after the secret levels, which are 👌 platforming, and blaming everything but themselves, that tells me everything I need to know.

Bless Sunshine for causing internet debate almost 20 years later, tho.
I've decided to give Mario Sunshine another chance.

I Just beat the eel boss (where you've got to clean his teeth) and, while I think it is a a really creative boss, the controls and camera are a huge problem that make it a chore to play. There are quite a few missions that are just overly tedious that really take the fun out of this game. Also when the game boots you out of a level after dying..... why??

The secret levels are great! It's almost always the players fault if he/she dies, no complaints here.

That said, I really do think Sunshine is a brilliant game (I like it more than Mario 64) that is held back by technical problems and some strange design decisions. What really gets me is Nintendo had the opportunity to fix theses problems, yet they didn't.

Mario Sunshine deserved better treatment.

The Bowser's Fury announcement got me thinking - have we ever had a game where Bowser is the main protagonist?

Would anyone else like to play a game where you play as Bowser, you rise through the ranks to become King of the Koopas' and then invade the Mushroom Kingdom with your army? Wario gets his own games, why not Bowser.

I really enjoyed the bit in Odyssey where you play as Bowser, though this was helped by amazing music!

If Bowser controls as heavy as he looks, I don't want to. I also don't like playing Wario for similar reasons.

Yeah that was sweet. Felt good smashing through everything! Give me more!

Well I'm sure they could easily work around this.
Bowser could use mini mushrooms to shrink down his size so that he's more nimble for platforming sections but then be his regularly large size for sections where he's primarily fighting/smashing things.
Plus, despite his size, he's pretty nimble and fast in Smash Ultimate.

King Koopa deserves his own game!
It would also be cool to command an army of different Koopas' and send them into battle, Pikmin style.

Been awhile, but he sort of saves the day in Bowser Inside Story, doesn't he?

This feels like the most underreported story of the last year.

Retro is really building a base of talent that resembles how the original Retro was made — hire everyone in sight with an amazing resume, until you have some of the brightest gaming minds in the country, all under one roof.

It’s also interesting to see just how many positions it’s missing, sometimes even crucial ones. There’s an element of staffing up for such an ambitious game, sure, and western development is basically a revolving door, so I could be wrong, but it does strike me that maybe Retro was in a bad way, more than we knew.

Also makes you wonder how far away the game is actually from a release date for a title that was basically announced when the Switch launched .
I know they restarted everything from scratch but makes you wonder if it’s a game we get for the Switch 2.

This is what I’ve been expecting since the restart. A cross-gen or very late-gen Switch game.

I think it’s a good idea to view it like that. If it comes sooner, it’ll be an awesome surprise, and if not, you won’t be let down.

No matter where the game is at right at this very moment, it shouldn't be further out than 2 years.

Because games don't really take that long to create unless there are problems with development or there is just a massive amount of content (GTAV, RDR2, etc). A Metroid Prime game probably wouldn't fall into the category of needing several years of content creation unless this game completely overhauls the formula and becomes sandbox space adventure.

The thing is it was announced in 2017 and no one really knows if they started from scratch or used whatever they could salvage.Them still hiring people tells me they started from the ground up so it‘s still a while away.
Hope I’m wrong but it feels that way.

It's been almost two years since the game moved to Retro Studios, and I would assume they started over. We're about 4 months out from the 2 year mark since the game restarted, but it sounds like development is picking up speed. This one will probably take 3 years, and I think it's because they didn't have a clue what they were building when they announced the game and still didn't have a clear plan when they moved it to Retro Studios.
