Wasteland 3 Review Thread

Warning!

I came across a bug where if you swap one (or both) of your original two characters out of your party they can come back with nearly all their skills and attributes gone.

I was able to 'fix' it by making two identical new characters and just redistributing the points accordingly. Turns out it's also a backdoor way to re-spec any character you made, so every cloud I guess.

As an extra feature, for the brief moment that I had those original characters duplicated, all four appeared in my party in addition to the normal numbers, so I actually had two extra party members. Now I didn't try and use them in combat or anything, I was nervous about the whole game burning to the ground if I tried something like that, so i just deleted the two original characters that were glitched.

Everything has been fine since, so if it happens to you don't be disheartened. :)

How can this thread be so dead? Game is fantastic!

Eh...gave it a quick (veeery quick and not proper) try. The textures on people's faces look like dough, they hosed the attribute system, fps drops aplenty and the hat selection annoyed the hell out of me. It all screamed "wait for mods" with a side of "please get these people a proper engine".

Two reasons.
1 - It's a Microsoft studio game, so that's already a bad start if you want to discuss it here.
2 - Most of the members are too busy arguing about the Nvidia show, some posts are downright sad, they took that conference as a personal attack on the PS5 and they are acting crazy.

Game is fantastic, been talking about it with my friends on discord, making builds and finding stuff.

Game does suffer from drops in FPS, long loading screens, bugs, balance issues.

Indeed loading is very long and it is quite buggy. One bug made me a very rich man although I feel kinda bad about that.

It's what I'm looking for. This and Pathfinder: Kingmaker(turn-based) are my favorite modern CRPGS. I don't really care for DOS2, POE etc.

I just started out and have a ridiculously unbalanced cast of characters for a team. My leader has perfect charisma and hard ass and basically nothing else. My tech geek has intelligence, lock picking, hacking, repairs and basically nothing else. My idiot bruiser has a gigantic body build, green skin and maximum blunt melee. He doesn't need anything else. Just smash. And so on. An elite team of heroes who are absolutely amazing at one or two things each. Ranger Grim, Ranger Gizmo and Ranger Hulk, so far. Come at us bro.

They're both newish games aren't they? You mean DOS2 is more modernized or streamlined?

I;m not sure what your definition of modern is. While both are crpgs, Pathfinder is closer to the classics while DOS2 is more modern from visuals, to gameplay mechanics.

Modern as in the new school CRPGS starting since POE which pay homage to the likes of Baldurs Gate, Arcanum and Fallout.

I missread your post. I thought you said DOS2, POE werent modern crpgs. Why didnt you like DOS2?
I enjoy being immersed in an RPG and somehow couldn't be in DOS2: didn't enjoy the tone, writing, armor system (magic, physical), itemization and more. Didn't particularly love anything either. (Maybe because it was designed to be enjoyed in a fun, casual way with a friend in co-op)

Fair, but isn't Wasteland 3 just like that? They clearly took inspiration from them for a lot of things. Wish they actually bothered working more on their optimizations but w/e.

Similar in a lot of ways for sure, but Wasteland 3 also takes lots of cool stuff onboard from games like Fallout (mature themes), X-Com style combat, and deep role-playing options from Kingmaker.

So after finishing the quest line about a certain past president I can say, without a hint of doubt, that it is my GOTY. I don't think I laughed so much playing game for quite some time now.

oh, and wait for an AI of such certain past president! :p

Buggy as it is, at least for me I'm spending more time in Colorado than GAF these days. As a sign inXile put in WL2 they should have used Unreal, but I'm loving it anyway.

Now that they are part of Xbox hopefully they will use Unreal on their first XGS exclusive.

People sleep on PF:K. It's insanely good...and moddable.

Makes the top 10 PC RPGs list without breaking a sweat.
The early game on PF:K really fucking bothers me, but i did play it over 100h and finished on the highest difficulty.
I hate how buffs last over 10minutes on end game but lasts like 30sec in the early game, i believe the duration should be the same and only the stats of the buff be increased when you level them up, that annoyed me so much i dropped the game twice.
On end game you can just buff once or twice during a dungeon and don't worry about it anymore, it makes the game so much better not having to stop before every fight to buff and cast spells.

Eh, I don't think there's a big audience for cRPG games on this forum unfortunately.

Look at the amount of people complaining about this games graphics and then dismissing it in this thread alone. It's a niche genre on consoles at the best of times.

Surprised they stuck with unity when they knew how much trouble they had with it on WL2. Im still pretty heated about them not supporting modding when that was one of their specific goals during fund raising and after release(couldnt get it to work). if that game had mod support, endless possibilities.

Game intrigued me, till I saw those graphics, and I don't care for turn-based combat.

Didn't know this was a MS studio game. Surprised it's on the PS4.

It's not. InXile are XGS Devs now, but it was in development before Xbox bought them and it's published by Deep Silver. Their subsequent games won't be on PS4/5.

Official modding tools would make things easier but I doubt that will prevent the community from creating some mods for the game. Plenty of games that don't have official mod support still have sizable modding communities.

But yeh, its a shame they didn't stay committed to the fig goals.

It's a Pathfinder game. That's how the system works. If buffs grew stronger as you leveled, it would completely break the difficulty. Why? Your characters are, let's say, level 5. So to give you an adequate challenge you face enemies with a challenge of 5, aka enemies balanced to fight level 5 characters. But are they balanced to fight a buffed or unbuffed party? If you balance with buffs in mind, then buffs become mandatory. If you balance without buffs in mind, then buffed parties absolutely destroy any fight. So to combat this, the system tries (tries) to keep buff strength at a reasonable (and fixed) level...and then balances around a partially buffed party. I say tries because the reality is that you can stack so many crazy buffs already that difficulty system cracks like an egg. If buffs got stronger as you level...man, I can't even imagine how stupidly easy the game would get. Imagine casting Haste from a level 9 spell slot. Oh look! You get 7 extra attacks a round. Go crazy, you little helicopter of death you.

They already had workflow and tools ready for Unity. With how limited budget they had it's no surprise that they decided to stay on it. Are there even any isometric RPGs on Unreal Engine?

I get your point, i just don't want to be buffing before every fight in a dungeon when i'm low lvl.
Like i said i dropped the game twice during the first half of the game, by the end my buffs had a 9-10m duration and i enjoyed the game a lot more, i didn't have to stop and use a bunch of skills before every fight.
The game has like 50 buffs, you make a few characters small, others big, you turn others into huge animals, you cast haste, some damage and protection buffs, immunities and so on, having to do this before every fight was a pain in the ass.
I just wish the combat in the first half was similar to the second half.

Got through Denver. The choices in this game seem really ambiguous.
I killed the Godfishers, stayed 'friendly' with the robot commune, and transferred Regan to HQ.

I am curious how these choices all play out.

One of the things Pathfinder version 2 has done is scale down on the buffs. See, every buff gives you a bonus of a certain type and they don't stack. So...spell A gives you a Luck bonus, item B gives a Luck bonus...only the highest counts. That was a great idea, but then they made too many categories of bonuses. Like you said: there's like dozens of those that you can stack. That stuff is waaaay scaled down in Pathfinder 2e. The games use Pathfinder 1e though.

What I'd like is for the UI to support buffing. Like, let me load spells and abilities into a macro of sorts. One click to cast all the crap I loaded into the macro. That would make prebuffing for a fight muuuuch smoother.

Me and my friend actually dropped this game a couple days ago in the middle of our playthrough as first it crashed on him as he was selling stuff, then the game just kept disconnecting me from the session and sending us both to the main menu, he would invite me again and I would get an error "unexpected error unable to join session" so I would need to force quit the app and restart it, upon restart it would connect right away. Only to play 10-20 minutes and serves us the same shit with a side of piss again.

We were really enjoying the game as well, and no, it wasn't a connection issue on either of our ends, we decided to move on to remnant from the ashes and have been playing it for 2 days (including the day wasteland was dcing us) and haven't had a single drop.

I really want to play Wasteland 3 but it's basically unplayable right now on the xbox and it sucks. It shouldn't have been released in this state.

Do you mind sharing some things that happened in your playthrough on xbox?

Slowdown with lots of enemies on screen? Crashes?

Alright, there my post above yours detailing some of it, but on top of that:

Over I want to say the first 8 to 10 hours of game:

-Game crashes when toggling through the inventory too quick
- Some NPCs straight up disappeared after talking to them leaving their quest unsolved
- Frame drops are bad at some points, like real bad. Colorado springs comes to mind as a big offender
- Within the first 2 or 3 battles my camera just glitched and the battlefield was pitch black with my character becoming disfigured and distorted, this happened everytime I rotated my camera in a particular way
- Constantly having to restart the app and sitting through the long load times in order to fix these issues
- If you are playing multiplayer, the servers don't seem to be stable
- If you disconnect from a multiplayer save, you will have to restart the app in order to be able to rejoin, otherwise you'll get an error.

I would 100% advice you wait for a patch before paying for it. I downloaded it off gamepass and I was still pissed. Decided to put it away until it gets patched again.

Thanks - I will hold off

Very intrigued by some video reviews but must resist, I've been in the situation before where strategy games with addictive gameplay run so bad releasing them should be illegal.

You get completely hooked and can't stop playing yet the game also runs worse and worse the further you get lol

It sucks because It's actually really really good and my buddy and I were getting really invested in the world and the characters. We want to get back to it ASAP but we decided to just wait. Definitely look into it when the issues are solved, you won't regret it.

This game is fantastic, I can't put it down. The bugs haven't been too bad on XBX. A few reloads, but nothing game-breaking. I have missed this the of game so much, fully invested.

I am really liking it but there are some really annoying issues in this game.

The loading takes fucking forever even on an SSD. Its like I am back in the HDD days. Even quickloads into the same area going back a few seconds is painfully slow. Its Bloodborne unpatched on the PS4 levels of awful. On a PC with an SSD.

Also I keep running into mobs that one shot 2-3 of my characters every turn they get. I get through encounters barely but have to burn all my money into heals. This is on quests/areas that are supposed to be at my level? And this is on normal. I am not an Turn based expert but I know my way around these games. I feel like I am doing something wrong and I have no clue what.

I am this close to using some infinite money hack and just buying myself a crap ton of heals to avoid the grind.

Everything was pretty chill for performance till I got to Denver. Not sure what is happening but I find it so odd that Denver suddenly is just pushing my computer
