Both Sony and Microsoft are really just pissing me off at this point with their messaging.

If I had a voice that they'd actually listen to, I'd want to say "Hey Sony...fuck off".

The messaging is just so all over the place. BE EXCITED FOR THE PS5...announcing State of Play...NO PS5 ANNOUNCEMENTS.

In previous console launches, the hype machine started with E3, and that shit didn't stop. They are just not even trying to make people feel good about these machines. Only blind devotion to these companies can yield any type of excitement based on what they've given us for either system. It sucks.

WOW, people flip out about this stuff. We know it’s coming. Expect it to be at least $399, probably $499. Preorders are going to be A BIG DEAL ANNOUNCEMENT, you won’t miss it.

No chill in here at all.

No big PS5 announcements?

I call bullshit, the machine's supposed to be out this holiday season, and we don't know price, release date, PSVR for PS5, backwards compatible with PS1/2/3 or not, if there's a back button attachment for PS5 controller or a PS5 Pro controller, we don't know if the rumors of Silent Hill reboot, SOCOM reboot or TLOU FACTIONS MULTIPLAYER standalone game are true yet.

We haven't seen the menu/operating system yet.

Nor what the new "create" button on the controller does (replaces "share", with expanded creation suites like video editing/video streaming/interactive gameplay slices sharing)

We haven't seen if they're overhauling PS+ online play and free monthly games, or PSNow game streaming subscription services.

We've not had a console teardown by Digital Foundry yet.

... Just how late are they planning on revealing this important information.

I don't know if that's true? Back when I was doing some game coverage, the time after E3 was all talk from the press with very little actual new info about the games (except for the little 3rd Party games, or now it'd be indies, who are eager to get some press before they get drown out, but there may be muzzles on even the small companies these days?)

It'd be a little to make like a graph of examples of the console cycle, but one thing you can look at for the history of game exposure is video, since every snippet of video a site can get, they'll post if it's a next-gen title. So looking at the video archives of some old sites, you can see everything they posted and when. For PS4 and Xbox One, these examples of that cycle shows a clear quiet period before the games ramped up again, and I remember that being frustratingly commonplace. (And last-gen was with an early E3, and without this damned virus complicating everything.)

Killzone Shadow Fall: Shown at E3 on June 10, 2013 (actually unveiled at GDC that February, with no new footage until June; didn't Ryse do the same thing .) Then, no more footage until August 20, 2013, when Sony released the Multiplayer Trailer and an additional press play session was held, with a more consistent news stream starting in Sept.

Dead Rising 3: Shown at E3 on June 13 (huh, did Sony really go first at that E3?), then a making-of video came out in July (not sure how much is new footage?), and then a play session on Aug 21 and another on on Sept 20 but the open-season kicking off somewhere in October.

And you should be able to find similar patterns for other games too. Big pop at E3, then a few months downtime before re-immersion when it's time to start selling product. There was once a time where Japan launched some consoles early, so if you were a Nintendo or PlayStation fan you could tune into Japanese press and see what was about to come your way or check out the import scene, but those days are long gone. A lull is intentional in a console cycle; there's other product to move, and console manufacturers want to direct game buyers carefully to maximise all their markets. It feels weird when you're in the eye of the storm (and in the past there were probably a lot of other ways game publishers were getting their products hyped up and it felt like we got a lot more, whereas now publishers are content selling their cross-gen titles; then again, I remember a lot of these same posts of "WTF, Microsoft has an Xbox coming out this year and we haven't seen it" or "Come on Sony, you already showed the thing, now where's the pricetag and release date for PS4?"), but this timing is a lot more normal than we wish it was.

Not sure yet Sony launched the PlayStation 4 in the holiday season of 2013, and they didn't give out that machine's price/date info until Gamescom in late August, so... what's today's date?

It is a curious event for Sony to hold after they hammered home the notion of "its PS5 or nada moving forward as far as they are concerned".

When are they gonna show the PS5 OS, talk about how BC works, and tell us the price? A fucking week before it releases? This has gotten stupid at this point.
You can't even officially preorder it, so it makes no difference at this point. There's really no benefit for the companies or gamers to know any of that information right now anyway, other than satiating the desire to know. They could very well announce it the night before, as many products are announced the day of release. However, they'll want to allow preorders, so there'll definitely be some lead time.

Yeah but the reason we can't preorder is because they haven't released the price. The announcement of the price and preorders going up will happen at the same time. So let's get it fucking going already.

I don't want to know the price because of some curiosity, I want to secure an Amazon order.

Do people still want to know about PS4 releasing at this point ? , Could at least give us some more details about the ps5 like the os and stuff .

I'm not disappointed. I can wait, no big deal.

My hope is that we see a little more from Kena or the other couple indies that caught my eye (can't remember their names right now).

Rushed next gen.

Zero excitement, lack of games and info for BOTH consoles.

They should release ps5 and xsex in the end of 2021, more time to reveal, to heat, to projects... There's no hype IMO.

I won't buy a next gen console until have a good library of games.

Ps4 still fire!

Really? It seems so much harder this time around.

Ha, I totally get that. I remember in February thinking "WTF with PS5?" but then coming across some old material from 2013 where we were going, "WTF with PS4"...

COVID has messed up the timeline a bit (I imagine something more than just the Cerny talk with no technical demonstration would have been at GDC in March if everything wasn't postponed? Like probably the UE5 unveiling would have been at the same GDC and maybe Cerny would have cross-referenced it, so the timeline would have been sped up a bit,) but it is true that console spans were not always like this With PS3, the infamous MotorStorm / Killzone BS trailer extravaganza was at E3 2015, but PS3 didn't launch until November 2016. (It still wasn't until real tech demos at GDC half a year after E3 before we were fully aware that those original trailers were fake as heck.) PS2 also had some very early showings, but remember that A) consoles shipped in Japan first back then (March 2000) and also B) Sony had Tokyo Game Show in September where they did an official unveiling of the console (the timeline no longer lines up for TGS to have any significant impact on the gaming industry; even for Japan, it's almost all titles releasing that year, not Q1 or later the next year.)

These days, though, game buyers want zero bullshots (or they'll tear apart the final product even if it ends up being exemplary on its own) and they kind of don't even want months and months pre-release hype (I know it's crazy to most of us, but you do see even on GAF people saying, "stop teasing me, just show it when I can buy it".) Gamers are already tired of AC Valhalla and DIRT 5 and Marvel's Avengers (admittedly not next-gen) and we've just barely seen them up and running; they want new things all the time, and games like CyberPunk are a rarity where every drop is savored.

I was really thinking that they would talk more about their ps5 games this time around. They could have just made this a ps4centric show with a ps5 game for hype and to keep the momentum going.

Are you sure? they did on E3, usually E3 is on June

In January, most of us were convinced that February would be the big part of the console reveal since that was the timeline for the PS4.

Now we're in August and still don't know the price or when it launches. This shit is insane.

Don’t worry. It’s all part of the chicken play plan. One of them will have to reveal the price sooner or later then the other will follow.

Let's split the difference on this one. I was wrong in thinking that all the retail info happened on the same date (Wikipedia makes you erroneously feel like you don't need to look things up...,) but you are right, pricing for both PS4 and Xbox One were announced at that E3 (Microsoft went first, and infamously Sony took to its stage later with $100 lower pricepoint.) The release date announcement for PS4 wasn't until Gamecom on Aug 20 2013 , while MS waited to put out its Xbox One date until Sept 4.

Sony already has their big hardware reveal set for Thursday; the WH-1000XM4 noise cancelling headphones. They have no need to reveal too much information about different next generation hardware; they need to give their respective devices airspace to breathe.

Ahhhhh man :/ remember the blowout after E3 in 2013 and this place was buzzing! The drip feed fit for tat with PS and Xbox is sucking all the fun out of the next gen hype...for now!

Wow... some of you guys come off a bit entitled... I mean I was also looking forward to more PS5 content as well.

But they can present their content at their own "leisure", they dont owe me any PS5 content. They made no promises.

Im also sure, this is good news for people who cant afford a next gen ticket...

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Look for a price point, gamers have to be ready to know what they’ll have to pay for next gen but also GAMES

Sooo is there another Song showcase this month that IS PS5 based? I have no reason to buy a PS5 or Xsx at this point.. and yet I've been DYING to see what next gen looks like on my C9. Disappointed
