PS5 UI Will Be Shown Soon, Boasting “100% Overhaul” And “Very Different New Concepts”

We’re in the same boat as you if the fleeting glimpse of PS5’s boot-up sequence shown at the reveal event left you wanting to see more of what the console looks like when it’s turned on and most importantly its UI, luckily it sounds like we won’t have to wait long to see it in action.

Speaking on LinkedIn, VP of UX Design at PlayStation, Matt MacLaurin, confirmed that Sony is gearing up to show the OS ‘’soon” and that it’s a ‘’100% overhaul of PS4 UI” with ‘’some very different new concepts”.

Sony’s won plaudits for its easy-to-navigate XMB system that’s been in play in one form or another since the PSX era so it’s going to be interesting to see if PS5 ditches that framework altogether or opts to change its functionality whilst retaining its core concepts. If it isn’t broke and all that.

Thankfully an increase in navigation speed is likely on the menu, which will be music to the ears of all considering how PS4 just lags in menus from time to time.

What sort of features or changes would you like to see in the PS5’s UI? Let us know in the comments section below.

I don't understand how or why they went backwards from the 360's UI 🤦🏻‍♂️
Ads. They reduce them a little, but clearly the marketing team at one moment win a battle and start to put ads front and center in the UI. On the previous version, you were one click away from various ads.

Just hope it’s fast and streamlined. I only use my consoles for gaming (well Blu-ray’s also since our standalone player died, but we rarely watch those anymore) and just want to get it o my games, party chat etc as fast as possible.

PS4 layout is mostly fine but my Pro has gotten laggy.

You should try the fucking xbox one x 🤣
Holy shit UI was shit this gen.

oh trust me , I’m not a fan of the Xbox interface either lol. And ever since upgrading my pc my One X has been a 4k BD-Rom player lol. Although sometimes the blu Ray app just refuses to start for no reason.

I can't wait to see what they've come up with.

The UI, in tandem with the controller, is the foundation of the console experience.

There have been some stellar designs such as the Xbox 360 Blades and PS3 XMB, as well as some serious tragedies like the Xbox 360 NXE and every iteration of the Xbox One dashboard. Hopefully this one falls in the former.

I want a complete redesign of the store as I struggle finding stuff.

Plus at times I press a direction and there is a pause.

Plus I want to be able to hide things I don't use.

Suffers from extreme PDS
I really have no issue with the PS4 UI other than it's horribly slow and it's compounded with a dynamic theme. Other than that I hope it's not as drastic as Microsoft when they went from 360 to the first iteration of the One.

I will never forgive Microsoft for making the themes I bought utterly worthless by switching to the NXE and then the one that had that big ugly gray floor. Shoulda refunded people who spent money on themes lol

I like both PS3 & PS4 menus.
Only thing I can't find in PS4 menu is how to turn on 2FA for all the purchases.(too lazy to find it on YouTube too)

Ugh. I'd hate to be a UI/UX designer in which you are forced to accommodate that. It's like smearing a crayon across a nice piece of art.

I'd honestly pay extra for a model that removed ads.

Am i crazy or was there a push during ps3 for plus members to not have ads?

Well, expected since Sony is the only one who believes in generations. Everything should be brand new, no laziness allowed.
Sorry but that's really dumb. You shouldn't make things new just for the sake of it being new, you do it to improve. Sony's patents shows that have ideas for new features that warrant UI updates. Microsoft revamps their UI almost every year, They did one within the last year with a design that they think would work best. If there's room for improvement they will try to improve it. But throwing out a UI simply because you have new hardware is dumb. TVs, phones, computers, set-top boxes, tablets, etc. all don't throw out their old UI for the sake of doing it. They iterate and improve. If there's a slew of new feature sets or you think of a better way for your new hardware then you upgrade your UI sure.

PS2 had no UI so they had to give it a UI for PS3. The PS3 UI was shit and wasn't designed with social features in mind like the 360 and they add a slew of features to match the 360 and a slew of new features for the PS4 that a UI update was necessary. Also, on top of that the XMB design wasn't an efficient way of displaying data, it wasn't good for discovery, doesn't fit modern desing trends and it put a large focus on dividing up media into a bunch of categories which you can no longer store on a PS4. The Xbox One had a big push for voice control and they also had a slew of new features including multi-tasking and a push for a common design style from Windows 8 and so needed to be redesigned. Updating UI has only been something done for 2 of the 7 console gen transitions. So there's no strong precedent for it in the console industry or in the tech industry. If Sony thinks they have a better idea for a new UI that's great. But Microsoft already implemented what they thought was the best way to control the UI at the time. Throwing away what you think it is good because "it's a new console generation" is just plain silly.

after 7 years, there is no doubt you can create a brand new and improved UI. It is needed imo

You can't just live of dat stability updates forever.

Great news. While I'm satisfied with the PS4 UI, it grows old on the eyes after 5 years of significant use.

Kinda cringe to say it but we gotta applaud Sony for putting up the effort to bring something new and fresh for its consumers. The competition is simply mailing it in.

Dammit. I really like the PS4 menu.

I've heard both extremes for PS5 menu.

1. Netflix-like easy to use. (implies row/grid of game boxes, simple)

2. Pulling down live data like trophies/current party chats and multiplayer lobbies. Lots of information presented on screen.

To me, at least, these two things seem to be completely opposites with one another.

I hope to christ it's nothing like the Xbox 1 menu system, that thing sucks for the most part with seldom few features I like about it.

The current Xbox UI is completely different than the one the system launched with 7 years go.

Give me a "List view" for games instead of cards
Easy access to games I own/bought on PSN instead of having to go to the library that oftentimes refuses to load icons/cards
Let me filter out PS+ games or put them into a separate category the way it's now is kinda bad.
Let me have the cards/icons of games I have uninstalled, so I can browse.
Optimize your apps properly, so they don't crash after using them for 10 minutes (PSN app always crashes for me when I browse the store).

This is what I want and hope for.
