If Gamepass is bad for the industry then why has nobody noticed besides GAF?

Suffers from extreme PDS
No one ones how much a Gamepass dev makes, but it cuts out the middle men aka Amazon, disc manufacturers and shippers who take a sizeable chunk of revenue. A physical $60 game, a dev makes about $27 of that.

I can’t imagine Gamepass is paying devs substantially worse than that per download.

Gamepass just gets blown up as starving game devs by the Sony defense force because PSNow is dog shit and there’s no incentive to buy it.

AAA has already gotten scarier and less prevalent before Game Pass. AA development has become over crowded and impossible to stand out in any meaningful way without a lot of luck involved. Game Pass isn't somehow the only thing that with magically change development. THe entire industry changes all the time.
And it'll get worse if everything ends up on services. Who's going to want to invest 100 million into an AAA game when no one buys games anymore

I don't know if it is bad, I just don't agree with it.

This is not like GamePass is something new, PC services of that nature have been a thing since at least the early 2000s (I used to work for a company that offered one, you had access to a library of games for like 5 or 10$ a month).

The difference is the incessant push for it, this is really annoying, the concept of recurring fees does not exist for the good of the customer.

Obviously while everyone is on their almost free 3 months trial this is not a problem.

Who would want to invest 100 million into music when no one buys music anymore?
Who would want to invest 100 million into movies when no one buys movies anymore?

The mass have spoken and owning content isn't what they prefer but that doesn't stop people from the option and it doesn't stop people investing into the medium. The idea of selling content to 100 million people over and over and hoping they buy the next console and game you put out isn't great long term solutions anymore in an industry where teams are getting larger and larger.

People are becoming more attached to brands and IP than the physical attribute. Getting them the content is the play now, not getting them the device.

Its the perfect model for a console manufacturer which sells poorly and have zero interest in good AAA first party development

There is people who don't find any appeal in their first party stuff. The online services also get awkward once you realise how many has been shutted down. That's maybe why some prefer Microsoft. BC, gamepass and their overall longevity and quality of the online services.

Each its own weaknesses!

You're one of those guys who will repeat over and over again that Gamepass is bad for gaming yet have zero figures or arguments that prove it.

I was actually hoping to get higher quality responses in this thread than yours actually.

That wasn't my thread.

Netflix started streaming in 2007. OnLive launched video game streaming in 2009.

Netflix is a worldwide phenomenon. OnLive is dead and video game streaming is still a niche way to game and has a ton of drawbacks.

Why? Because there's a huge difference between streaming video and live gameplay. Yes, it "works". But it will ALWAYS be inferior to local gameplay.

The service has been available for more than 2 years now and more and more devs are putting more and more games on Gamepass.

If it was so bad, wouldn't they have noticed by now that it's killing their business? How come the only who've noticed are the armchair devs?

Developers are worried about services like GP devaluing big budget games. From a screenshot on Twitter

Do we want a future of Uncharteds, God of Wars, Cyberpunks, Resident Evils or will we be ok with subscription gaming lowering the funding of games

Less improved graphics, smaller worlds, less innovation, etc

Vote with your wallets people, buy good games
LMAO!

Let's see how you guys respond when Sony does it. That'll be interesting... Lol

The additions to gamepass haven't been that great so I'm not sure what you're saying here. Most big releases are still just completely ignoring it. People were saying the same thing about PS+. Why would people buy games etc etc but it's just an additional income for MS through a sub and devs get a kickback. The games being added aren't what you say they are, they're PS+ quality now.

That is easy to confirm... just wait to see if the investment in new AAA games will increase or decrease.
If devs will starts to close up or not.

I already decided my default comment for these thread.... "gamepass".

He is talking about developers (more than one) that he talked about.

The industry will eventually turn into exactly what Netflix is.

Loads and loads of cheap, unpolished garbage, with a small number of really good games worth playing here and there. The industry will raise the prices of games at retailers (and control the games you do buy with digital licenses) so that the "value" always appears to be with an endless subscription service.

But Gamepass is doing well. Gears alone doubled their subscriber base. I think Nadella just praised Gamepass for adding more subscribers. More 3rd party devs are putting their games on the service than ever. You dudes don't make sense. Lol

There is literally no reason to have access to 100s let alone 1000s of games, the model generally doesn't make sense from consumers pov or a publishers pov. A typical person only plays a few games a year, if that.... a family of 4 can consumer 1000s of hours of tv/movies a year. Most games will continue to be funded through sales, and digital sales offer the best ROI.... rentals are a small revenue stream for older games.

But Gamepass is doing well. Gears alone doubled their subscriber base. I think Nadella just praised Gamepass for adding more subscribers. More 3rd party devs are putting their games on the service than ever. You dudes don't make sense. Lol

I would bet that Spider-Man produced in just one hour more revenue in sales than all of the revenue of Game Pass in its 3 years of existence. Rentals can be okay for older games that are not worth much, but development has to get large money from initial sales.

Game Pass is simply a rental program, there simply is no way to generate the amount of money needed to fund these games without huge revenues.

Gamepass is not my thing so they are not receiving any money from me because of extreme prejudice against it. I just like to own the things I like and I play the same games over and over.

Netflix is billions of dollars in debt and is much more filler than anything. Is that the future you want for gaming?

And flopped in sales.
So you sacrifice a game to make a services looks good?

Will MS eat the loses again for Gears 6?

*developers* as quoted from Jason Schreier and if you think about it logically, it makes perfect sense

Gamepass devalues AAA games. On this very forum you have people that have admitted that they've stopped buying games because they only use the service now...

It sets a bad precedence when people are waiting for AAA games to drop on to cheap services

Flopped in sales?? Because it killed it on Gamepass! The fuck?

And do we have the numbers for how many copies sold for Gears 5?

i only buy forza games from microsoft and them being day one because i know what i can expect from those games plus all the dlcs coming from that (incl. the day one dlcs). so tell me if gamepass is really worth for me or not.

i'd rather invest that money in something else. i only expect a few things from ms catalog. the rest i can count on either gog or steam to get.

All I know is I better not hear one developer mentioning lay off because of slipping numbers from sales when they are basically giving the games away on gamepass lol. Your fight no one knows what share devs takes weather it's full game price or gamepass but I do know that there is no way they are doing better going the pass route day one.

The very notion of games as a service makes my blood boil in the face of actually owning games instead of basically renting them. Add having to deal with micro transactions and having to buy DLC separately its madness.

But .... You know absolutely nothing about the financials of Gamepass. You litterely are incapable of giving one single figure about anything about the

Yeah, that's because Microsoft hides their gaming financials numbers, been trying to hide stuff for 20 years now.

Basically, they are giving away a service for free...

Yes please let us learn it the hard way. In the meantime I'll enjoy the best value for money service ever invented in the history of gaming ✌

Oh sure, they're giving it away for free... but doesn't seem like a business model or a real business.

Nothing wrong with rentals be it Redbox, Blockbuster, PS Now, Game Pass, etc.... but pretty much its going to be small revenue stream for devs/pubs.

Meh. It's just a game rental service. It's not worth the changes that will come to game design

We want numbers bro! Stop dodging the question. How much did it sell physical + digital ?

The ones that would have good numbers is probably MS, which probably won't disclose them.

For an AAA game, all indications is sales wise a flop. Even GoW4 wasn't good, and it did much better. I probably did better than Crackdown 3 but pretty much a huge flop sales wise.

Don't worry though - Microsoft has lots more money to waste.

I posted all proof already.
It is NPD showing how bad Gears 5 did.

Keep the denial for you.

No.

N-U-M-B-E-R-S is what we want.

3 million people played it Gamepass/Digital/Physical combined.m in the 1st week.

But you can confirm it flopped, so please, provide your figures!

It is already confirmed in previous post.
3 million where most used Gamepass and not $60... that is exactly how bad the Gamepass deal is.

Denial.

I can't confirm even one sale. I didn't buy one. :messenger_tears_of_joy: My number is 0.

See how that works?

Doubled from what? From the estimate they last gave us "well". So now it's doing "2x Well"?

It must be flooded with subscribers, so MS felt the need to keep lowering the price of entry until it reached as low as $1 a month (that they just hope a certain percentage don't bother cancelling when the rates inevitably increase 10 or 20 fold).

Gamepass is a long-term plan with the goal of getting MORE money from you, not less. At the same time, they want to devalue games as a whole to bring the costs to make "AAA" games down.

Actually it is interesting to see these numbers.

Gears 5 flopped at retail + digital in sales.... way lower launch than Gear 4.
But at the same time you have 3 million users playing it.
So a lot of users choose cheap Gamepass over the actual $60 game sales.

That is exactly what devs are worried.

MS can sacrifice money for that but can others developers?

Gamepass eat full priced sales at launch... eats a lot like shows Gears 5.

How do you know it flopped digital? Wait you don't and you still can't provide one single figure for anything.

And I just realized I'm asking proof to the GT Sport guy lol.
