Did that moron from EDGE Magazine ever release the preview/review for Death Stranding?

Nathan Brown is an unprofessional asshat for doing and saying what he did and say, respectively. I don't think I'll ever look at EDGE Magazine the same way again after what they did to Kojima and his game.

So, did he ever release his shit preview of Death Stranding or did he decide not to release it out of fear of retaliation (for good reason)?

So much Salt. Wow. Did he personally attack you or something?
Get a Life dude. No reason to be so butthurt. Seriously.

death stranding is boring as fuck. If the name hideo wouldn’t be there, people wouldn’t give a shit about this „game“ or delivery guy simulator.

No doubt Edge got pressured to not force Nathan Brown to release a review. He probably would have given it a 4/10.

Now months after the game is already out, a review comes out from another editor? Too late for that.

Edge released a review just to make it look like they didn't totally hide from the issue.

And what a bogus reason for not releasing a review.... something about being bored and not finishing it.

It's not like every person in the world plays a game and all modes to completion. You can already get a gist of feelings and release a review. If every game had to be completed, you wouldn't get RPGs or sports game reviews for months as it takes ages to go through a game, complete seasons, play online etc...... in it's entirety.

It's like rating food. You don't have to eat every crumb to give a score if the food is shit or not. You can tell half way through.

The way I see it, life is too small and the Earth too round to be mad about this. Be happy and content in yourself and ignore those external agents of misery, especially ones called Nathan Brown. They will vanish, like rain over the misty horizon of post-apocalyptic America.

Then again.

More like, EDGElord. Am I right?!

What I find funnier is that they reviewed Plague Tale Innocence several months after its release... and it's not even a long or a frustrating game. Of course it's their magazine, but they make themselves look very unprofessional.

Sony mandated finishing the game to be able to release a review.

He has every right not to review a game, and to not like a game. Fear of retaliation? That's cult-like bullshit :messenger_tears_of_joy:

As an answer to the question, Edge gave it a 6(very generous considering their impressions).
The way he went on about it on Twitter and tried to act cocky about not finishing the game left a bad taste for me.

They're unprofessional because they ignored a game for a month? Is it mandatory for a magazine to review games before the release/at launch? Ridiculous.

He has every right not to like the game. But they gave their subscribers a very bad example. One of the most anticipated playstation exclusive of 2019 didnt got a review. Imagine you pay for their magazine. Nice to know that you cant expect reviews on games, their staff doesnt like.

The review score wouldnt have mattered. But to not review the game was unprofessional and ridiculous.

Like people hate on Edge almost exclusively because they're usually butthurt that their beloved titles didn't get as good of a score as they wanted, and most of these people have never even read said review. Most of them are coddled by how other review sites hand out 9s and 10s like candies that Edge using the whole scale triggers them.

Life is Strange 2 is one of my favorite games of the year and they gave it a 5, but I'm not mad at them for it. I think it's a bit harsh, but I haven't read the review to know their reasoning, and can see why they could rate it that low based off my impressions on what they value in games/sequels. I'm also able to stand back and try to view LiS2 objectively.

It was not only this but it made me not renew my sub this year, for the first time in many years.

It made me realize something that I maybe should have seen earlier, that the magazine did less and less for me with the growing focus on mobile/indie games that I have zero interest in.

Not at all. You're merely too emotionally invested in Kojima.

Leave it to the actual paying customers to remark on their feelings there and judge with their wallets, though I'm sure their subscribers know quite well how Edge runs. It's a monthly magazine that isn't always going to have a review of every game that month, and they expect high quality reviews from Edge. If Nathan Brown forced himself through the game just to get a review out ASAP that could be said to be a disservice to their readers more than not releasing one.

It was made clear early that the review would come late if at all, and eventually did come out. You don't think that their staff reviews games they don't like? They have reviewed many games that they have given lower scores than DS, so your argument doesn't hold any water. Sony's mandate that they finish the game doesn't help, but some out there cry foul at reviewing before finishing too, even though Kojima made an overly long game for a concept best left to a sub-20 hour experience.

That post was more about general hate towards Edge, which magnified backlash towards their remarks on DS, but don't act ignorant that Nathan hating it didn't play a part. Kojima/Playstation fanboys feared a low score because of Edge's weight on Metacritic. Fanboys take metacritic very seriously, and in general take scores very seriously as can be seen by the many times lower than expected scores have created huge backlash.

Back in the days, when gaming magazines were still important and with heavy competition, they had to review such game.

The game is not that long to finish. Everybody can easily beat it under 40-50 hours. Some games take longer. If a game reviewer is stuck and doesnt know how to use the game mechanics to his advantage, it just shows their lack of skill for their profession. Most reviewers had enough time with early access to the game prior release.

Again, I dont care for their score. But why bother beeing a reviewer, when you cant sit through a game. It is their job. Not much people can decide to not do tedious tasks of their job without facing consequences. I dont know how someone can defend such lazy and poor work ethic.

For some people, Death Stranding is an extremely good game. If some reviews land on sub 6/10 scores, that is their right to judge and when they can objectively justify their decision, I am happy with it too.

It's well known that all the media outlets received a copy of Death Stranding about a month before its release and the servers were also working to provide a chance to test all the social aspects of the game. That's more than enough time to finish it and write the review. What's worse is they weren't hiding the fact that the reviewer didn't want to finish the game and write the review, quite the opposite. Personally I wouldn't buy a magazine employing journalists who can't do their jobs properly.

If they are in the business of reviewing games, they should of course review it.
They did review it, and it's within their right to not review it, as it is the customer's right to not buy that issue or buy from them again if they take issue with it.

I know they did. Never said they didn't. And of course they have the "right" to do whatever they want. Never said otherwise. I was being Captain Obvious!

This is why reviewers should first and foremost be experienced players to skip through all this and save time.
Especially if they are paid for it

You were talking about A Plague Tale in the post I quoted not about DS. Whether they received either DS or A plague Tell r any other game a month before release it still does not make them unprofessional for not finishing the games after a month or two or three or whatever. They have no obligation for you or anyone else except maybe the publishers/developers if asked/mandated, to finish said games before the release. If you don't like it, don't buy it but being a manchild like MHK and calling people unpro asshats is stupid af just like this thread.

It's *not* about them not reviewing it in the issue that came out in the same month. It is *not* about the potentially low review score. Jesus, some people here are hella obtuse.

And I did cancel my sub (or rather, not renew it in 2020) so I put my money where my mouth is. If my mouth were in my pockets that is.

Does it matter if they review the game or not? Did you like the game? If you did then what does it matter what score EDGE gives to the game? It’s not going the change the enjoyment you got from the game.

I've already said in my first post that it's their magazine and they can do what they want with it. Same goes with picking games for reviews. This doesn't mean their actions can't be criticised and called unprofessional. In my opinion if you're a journalist and you can't / won't review a game or take months to finish a simple game, then you shouldn't have the job.

We're not in that age, and it's clear that Edge won that competition as they're one of the few outlets left that still charge for their content.

The game is not that long to finish. Everybody can easily beat it under 40-50 hours.
That is a very long time, most games especially those not in the RPG genre don't take that long to beat. If you're grinding it out with a game you don't enjoy it can feel like longer. From all I know of how game reviewers get paid, it's not hourly either.

Again, I dont care for their score. But why bother beeing a reviewer, when you cant sit through a game.
He has sat through many games, no doubt many he didn't like. This one particularly gave him problems, and he bowed out of submitting a review for it even though that likely hurt him financially. Being a reviewer is not like being a mechanic, it's more akin to being a writer. GRRM could force himself to sit down and complete TWOW, but would it be something that he would be satisfied giving to his readers?

It is their job. Not much people can decide to not do tedious tasks of their job without facing consequences. I dont know how someone can defend such lazy and poor work ethic.
And their job is not like many other jobs, and doesn't operate under the same rules. Judging it by the standards of standard fair jobs is petty and uneducated, as if game reviewers even make good money.

Nothing lazy about what he did. He sunk over 30 hours into it, then decided he wasn't the right guy to review the game for Edge. He likely lost money from that choice, whereas he could have rushed through the rest to complete it and churn out a review, but that would be a disservice to his profession. Nothing was hinging on him completing the review, he's not out here doing a half-assed job repairing a car that's going to break down on that customer again.

To treat game reviews like car reviews is to not treat games as art. Roger Ebert walked out of movies and still reviewed them, despite their much shorter on average length. Nathan Brown wasn't afforded the opportunity to do the same, to review the game without finishing, even though that would be a true reflection of how he felt about the game : too much of a slog to complete.

This is the best response to my thread post so far.

I still don't like how he hurt Kojima's feelings though. When he's sad, I'm sad.

If I remember correctly he was bitching because Sony had a mandate out that reviewers had to complete the game before reviewing it so he decided he wasn't gonna do his job and was gonna jump on twitter to complain. It doesn't matter if he didn't like the game, its his job. If every reviewer was a crybaby like him all bad games would have zero reviews. Can you tell me any other profession where people don't have to finish their work because they don't like the project? Integrity is the last word I'd use to describe this man's actions.
