Anthem gameplay trailer. [EA/Bioware, PC/XB1/PS4, Fall 2018]

Has a frostbite game ever been downgraded apart from BF3?

Hmm, when it comes to Frostbite, don't know. I'm just talking in general - games in past E3's that ended up being downgraded when they finally released. Again, I'd love to be proven wrong, but this game was so far ahead of everything else at Microsoft's conference, I'm not confident it will end up looking like this.

Gotta admit, this looks pretty great. Two things though.

Firstly, if it were a new single player focused IP I'd be all over it, day 1 etc etc. The multiplayerness of it all, has me wary a bit. Hopefully it works out ok.

Secondly, that demo would have been so much better without that annoying banter between, what I assume was the two people playing. Sometimes it seemed like it was the in-game characters, but then the guy mentions things like getting more xp and leveling up guns and the girl also got all 'excited' over her loot drop. Either way it was all pretty damn cringey.

Other then that, wow. I was actually sitting there for the 1st minute or 2 before they took off, thinking 'nah. this ain't for me' and nearly skipped the rest. Then it got hectic, and I picked my jaw up 5 minutes or so later

Yeah, that dumb scripted gamer dialogue stuff has become the standard for gameplay demos for a few years now it seems

I'm skeptical as well, but I'd love to be proven wrong. There've been too many titles that have ended up getting downgraded after their initial showings at E3.

Yeah, I'd love to play the game the way it looks in the trailer, but I'm not holding my breath for it, unless it's going to be a more linear game.

Mass Effect Andromeda? After reading the Kotaku article, it'll be interesting to see how the animations look in the finished game, and how the environments, action-RPG mechanics, and streaming and save systems are handled. I'm even more sceptical about the online portion working as fluidly as the trailer portrayed.

Dude, that video clearly stated "conceptual prototype".

OMFG Casey Hudson please come back all is forgiven

The conceptual prototype refers to Edmonton's new IP, which is now known as Anthem.

EDIT: My mistake, it's mentioned during all video material.

I can already tell getting what "vertical slice" means to you will be hard.
Nobody is denying that all this isn't plausible in the game.

All we mean is this was a carefully crafted and highly polished demo to show the game in best possible light.

Every big AAA E3 demo does this, I'm not sure what you can't seem to understand.

Perhaps if this were an E3 from set during the previous generation. But game companies have been pretty good this time around of showing gameplay that closely resembles the end product.

I wouldn't be surprised if the end product ends up looking better than what was shown. In fact I'm positive it will look better.

There's nothing really too scripted in the video shown that would make me think it's been specifically crafted for E3, and not actually part of the game. The creatures entering the frame remind me script triggers. You really have no basis for claiming with certainty that this was made specifically for E3.

I'm sure I read somewhere on Gaf that Anthem was captured on a comparable PC to Xbox One X specs, however on today's daily show Patrick Soderlund just mentioned that it was captured on a One X

Wonder how this will play as a solo game.

I'm guessing like The Division. You can roam about the world doing story and side missions alone until the credits roll.

You can even do 'dungeons' alone on an easier difficulty, but if you want real loot you'll have to get a party and do proper difficulty dungeons.

The game looks absurdly good, visually. I was blown away by the scale of the world when the player started to dive down Dead Space style. Usually when you dive down in games you expect to hit the ground pretty soon but this character was nowhere near the ground level. It really hammered in how big of a scale everything is. Also the mobility looks super fun. I saw that big dude taking a huge leap somewhere in the background and I'm just imagining how fun it must feel to control. The mech suits look pretty cool as well.

So the hub portion is FPS perspective and inside the suit it's third person? I wonder how big the hub area is.

Probably because a Xbox One X dev. kit is a "comparable PC to Xbox One X specs"

What is the likelihood this game will include companions/squadmates like previous BioWare IPs? Slim, I guess?

That would be awesome and adds uniqueness to Anthem compared to Destiny.

So people who prefer proper single player RPG experience from Bioware can still enjoy the game as they want it.

So during the daily show they spoke to Patrick Soderlund about the game.

4 years in the making, he speaks about other open world games and not having this kind of fidelity and they really succeeded in that he said and once again he confirmed it was running on Xbox One X.

So there's that.

........ because the last Bioware game sure delivered on the visual front.

I mean I am all for being optimistic but it's weird to slam Ubi after the shitshow thats was ME:A.

An easy mistake a lot of people make is conflating brands with development studios. There is no "Bioware" in terms of teams. There's Bioware Edmonton, Bioware Montreal, and Bioware Austin. "Bioware" as you know it would be Edmonton. Montreal was formed for ME DLC and Andromeda. My understanding is that they were basically dissolved, with staff going to EA Motive. Austin is for The Old Republic.

EA just confirmed Anthem was running real-time on Xbox one X hardware

[UPDATE: In a previous version of this article, we stated that it wasn't clear what hardware this demo was running on - in fact, EA's Patrick Soderlund does confirm that it is a real-time Xbox One X demonstration. Many apologies for the error, we will have a deeper look at the demo very soon, but we can confirm 2160p checkerboarding from our tests - something that would be unlikely on PC and very much in line with Frostbite's console technologies.]

According to the article, some devs just got their dev kits last month.

Also, Mike Ybarra has stated that the current version of the Xbx1X Dev kit isn't the final one.

The XDK is not complete and we're still working on it

If Anthem was indeed running on XBX1X during that demonstration then I'll be very very impressed. Damn.

Borderlands did this type of game as a Hero Shooter and it worked pretty well. So Bioware could potentially go in that direction with an established framework should they choose too.

If they will is anyones guess.

I'm pretty jazzed for this game. I don't know about everyone else but I kind of like this games as a service trend. I like seeing constant updates and being able to invest in my character over time, to create the attachment and see it evolve. Maybe that's why I'm also drawn to MMOs. I'd like to see sports games go this route too, instead of the annual big releases where you are starting over again in story and franchise modes, do one major technology release per generation and then do DLC updates each year.

The game looks amazing. It also upsets me that Andromeda didn't get anywhere near the same amount of love. Don't get me wrong, I am still playing the game and I enjoy it, but Anthem makes me think of what Andromeda could have been.

Finally got around to watching proper footage of the E3 showing.

Two things.

1. I hate, hate, hate that publishers/devs still opt for these cringe inducing scripted dialogues.
2. This game somehow looks next gen, it's is even more visually stunning than I thought.

Did the people behind Mass Effect Andromeda make this game, or is it another Bioware studio?

Bioware Montreal did Andromeda and they got downsized to support studio so they are not going to make any other game anytime soon (if ever). Bioware Edmonton (the old Mass Effect trilogy team) is leading on Anthem

Andromeda got a LOT of dev time from EA. Montreal could have made a game just as great if they directors and leads did their job well. It's not often that you see a project so mismanaged in the AAA industry

I'll put a Mass Effect Andromeda sticker in the box of Anthem. I'm very impressed by what has been shown so far about this game

Thanks! Will watch it at home

They said 2019 almost immediately after it was shown at the MS conference.
Did they? Really? Game's youtube channel says otherwise (Fall 2018)

1. I thought the dialogue was OK, especially compared to The Division a few years ago. That was terrible, I didn't hear anything that made me roll my eyes. It was basic social interactions, got the message across *shrug*

2. I thought so too, probably owes to the long development and the polish it is receiving. I suppose this is the effect when development doesn't have to scale down its assets for the final game.

The " you could really use that xp" part didnt make your eyes roll ? :D

ME:A really didn't blow anyone's socks off at reveal did it?
And it certainly didn't blow anyone's socks when it released. Which is why I'm not impressed by the 1000th scripted vertical slice of a purported online open world game. Especially by a studio that has been mostly mediocre for the past 10 years, and more so with Frostbite, the source of many of their problems.
I'm not buying it.

So, please explain to me something, from the demo, the first part where we are in first person perspective, is that whole thing a big cutscene? Does the player have actual control, moving the character?

Because this looks like a cutscene and not actual player input up until the part where the character enters the exosuit and we move to a 3rd person perspective. Have the devs commented on this?
