The New JL Trailer is Everything Wrong With DC's Dark Movie Universe

I like that it's bleak. Tired of the same Marvel formula. Its nice to have something different. That being said just needs better writing and pacing to fix shit from BvS.

There's really nothing wrong with DC being dark, and its good to set themselves apart from Marvel. How they handle it is a different story. But I think the notion that DC has to follow Marvel and be bright is a poor one.

Exactly. Just should have hired a better actor for Lex Luthor, and gone with the Extended release by default. And rethought "Marthaaaaa".

Maybe they're afraid of veering into Joel Shumacher territory?

He tried to make the series go more comic-booky and it completely killed the franchise for more than a decade.

Yep, JL straight out of CW.

Look, a show with better cinematography than the MCU.

I don't want DC movies looking anything like Marvel's. Let the two be different and distinctive from one another. The only good looking Marvel films are Iron Man and GOTG anyway. Everything else pretty much lacks any semblance of style.

The problem, or what I assume will be a problem, with the humor in Justice League (and the, uh, jokes, in MoS and BvS) is that Snyder is not a naturally funny guy. I mean, I don't know the guy personally, maybe he's fucking hilarious in conversation. But, as a filmmaker, he does not naturally comedic sensibilities. Which is why his previous superhero movies were overwhelmingly humorless and why I worry, and pretty much expect, a lot of the jokes (or attempted jokes) in JL to fall flat.

Also, that sunlit shot in the trailer looks bad. Like, really bad greenscreen.

This is an incredibly limited way of looking at comics and superheroes. Truly great comic stories treat the characters seriously and with respect. If you haven't, I suggest reading All Star Superman, Kingdom Come, or the Dark Knight Returns for some intelligent, mature, and serious takes of heroes.
I've read Dark Knight Returns. It's only a intelligent and mature if you're a 14 year old lol. I love comic books but acting like they're anything more than manchild fantasies is silly.

Geez...
What would Off-Topic be without the DCEU?

I hated BvS but some of the criticisms levied against the Jutice League trailer just baffle me. Yeah, the movie will probably be shit considering the circumstances. But Cyborg aside, that trailer had superb cinematography, some terrific Aquaman moments and the goddamn speedforce.
But it was slightly too dark, so let's write an editorial.

I LOVE that it's dark and gritty. Humor has a way higher chance of missing imo, I don't find the MCU films funny and the fact they're relentless in their humor is obnoxious. I love the tone tone that the DC films provide and when they embrace the fun carefree nature of it all, it makes a wonderful juxtaposition, especially in Suicide Squad!

I actually don't like that they really hinge on "at least there's humor this time!" in their trailers. Considering I don't laugh, they feel like swings and misses.

And of course the same ol' DC marks go "This is a REAL movie, not something that belongs on TV!"

Imagine being this upset that you will NEVER EVER know it what's like to have an RT score over 60

I like that it's dark and I can barely see what's happening. It bugs me that there are scenes during the day in this universe because it's like, 'Who turned on the lights?' but it's curbed slightly by always being on the verge of a downpour so as not to be too bright.

Batman v. Superman did it best when the two title characters fought during a downpour... at night.

Why would you want all superhero movies to be the same? Especially considering how popular they are and how every year there's a bunch of them. Batman already feels awkward doing all those Tony Stark type of jokes so... what else do you want? If you want GotG humor you can just watch GotG 2.

Movie discussion really has gone full gaming if we're doing the UK Resistance blue skies thing.

It's very lazy surface level criticism.

Imagine not caring as much as to having the universe's champion being a talking racoon

It's a pretty superficial article that doesn't at all delve into the problems other than the passing thought of "um turn on the sun"... it's a very surface level argument about... color palette? Right, the DC Universe and color palette is it's biggest problem...

That's not a criticism nor a valid well thought out one.

No one gives a crap about darkness or light... make a good movie.

Justice League trailer and the new Spider-Man: Homecoming poster—to notice how different the optics are between the two. The aesthetics couldn’t be more different,

They're two differen movies going for too different tones and styles.

I should hope they would look different!

DCEU movies aren't bad because they are too serious or not enough quips or whatever.

They are just bad movies, poor execution, simple as that

That feel when you will never EVER get an academy award like the legendary masterpiece we all love on NeoGAF. Suicide Squad.

Well I can see there's no point in discussing this with you since you've already made up your mind, but I'm sorry you can't find more value in these incredibly vast histories of characters, with stories penned by hundreds of writers. There's a lot of great stuff you're missing.

It doesn't really matter how good a Snyder movies looks when the only somewhat coherent version of it can't even be watched in a theatre.

None of these DC movies, so far, have scripts as good as any of the Nolan`s Batman movies. That`s the first problem to begin with.

So why aren't writers allowed to write more meaningful comic book stories? Why should they remain dumb to you?

Nolan Batman and Snyder dark are so far apart. Does DC need to go Marvel, absolute not they could give the look some life.

God's had his chance.
Excuse me ahem Aquaman goes YAYUH

This straight made me choke on my coffee...

I don't mind dark tone, dark presentation and aesthetic or dark characters in my comic book movies. I would just ALSO like them to not be complete and utter shite. So just... stop making terrible movies with terrible plots/stories and we should be all good.

easy peasy.

The constant "X looks like a tv show while Y looks like a real movie" tripe is a really dumb talking point that exposes how many people have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. A lot of TV shows today look incredible, and slapping a lot of overwrought filters and video game-y CGI into your movie does not make something look inherently cinematic.

Superman and Batman were never comedians.

Most people are not comedians, and yet, we encounter humor in our day-to-day lives pretty frequently. Isn't that odd.

DC really, REALLY needs to take a look at Marvel's movies and realize that they can lighten up a bit

They just need to look at the Nolan movies. In general, I will never get the idea that serious and humor oppose each other. Humor is a normal way of humans to react to dark, bleak or outright devasting situations.

Are people still grabbing those screenshots? Even though the guy who did them admitted to darkening and de-saturating the "source" to further make his point?

I never said they're not. I'm saying they don't. Sorry comic nerds, comics aren't as deep and meaningful as you think. They're can be well written, and enjoyable, but the majority of comic book writers aren't able to write legitamely thought provoking media. Literally the only comic that should ever be considered an actual thought provoking piece is Watchmen, because it does the exact same opposite of what most superhero comics are.

hasnt this been debunked? that the creator of this comparison deliberately desaturated the film for the so called "original footage"?
