LTTP: Bloodborne is *amazing*

The total difference in play between nearly every weapon is my favorite part of the game. Sure, your R1 while un-transformed is often the same, but your R2 and transformed R1 AND R2 are very different amongst each other.

And those animations.

Mmmmm Blades of Mercy

That's another thing: I think the limited roster of weapons helped the game immensely. Instead of having 20 variants of the same weapon type, we got 1 of each, which allowed each one to be unique and interesting.

I know a lot of people bitched about the lack of weapons compared to Souls, but we were better off for it.

And the Blades of Mercy are GOAT. Too bad they nerfed them. I don't care though, I'll still use them.

I just beat BB last weekend and have done a bit of NG+ since then. I totally forgot to revisit the DLC stuff after I took a peek at it on my first playthrough, so I'm sure I'll be getting my ass kicked with the increased difficulty.

Anyone else totally in love with the stake driver? I'm trying to use other weapons more (currently playing with the scythe) but I always fall back to the driver when things get hairy. Love that charged, transformed R2.

Agreed. Quality over quantity of the best kind. I feel like I could have a single weapon carry me through the entire game because their move sets had so much depth.

Chikage is my favorite.

I also like the simplification of armour, no need to upgrade anymore (so less reason to grind).

Got an armor at the beginning of the game and used it for the entire play through pretty much. Looks cool and no fuss.

I got BB for x-mas and currently several hours into it. I've only played DS3, so BB felt welcoming. Holy shit man, I'm loving this game.

You think it's good now? You are about to shit your pants with the direction this game goes. This will fly ahead of even Demon's Souls to you once you are done.

I wish I could play this game again for the first time. Got to NG +6 with a little over 300 hours in it.

Out of over 2000 games I have played in my life, it's the best game I have ever played. And it came out this generation.

Bloodborne is indeed amazing.

Also, you absolutely need to buy the expansion. The content in there is absolutely on par with the original game and is in many ways, actually better.

You ain't seen nothing OP. NOTHING.
The game will only get better and better.

A frickin masterpiece that ruined gaming for me for a long time.

The guns aren't useless. Parries son.

Ohhh and this. Learn to read enemy attack animations and you can stun them (put them in a downed state) effectively with guns. Dash in > hand through the chest > big damage. And holy shit does it feel good.

Keep in mind the different guns have different trajectories of bullets and different fire rates. Shotguns are spread and can hit multiple enemies, pistols are single shot, etc.

Guns are super effective and add a lot of great style and variety when used right.

Started the DLC today after beating
Micolash
. Really proud and surprised I managed to get to
Ludvig with only one death and then kill him on second try
Not usually very good at these games even though I love them. Being over-leveled probably helps me a lot though. The DLC has rejuvenated my love for the game. I loved the main game too but I felt like it started to drag. Nightmare frontier - > unseen village -> nightmare of mensis is a pretty rough stretch. I'd say the two former zones are not only bad by souls standards but just bad zones in general. Nightmare of mensis is OK though so far since the level design is quite good.

The Forbidden Forest was the worst for me. My sense of direction was totally shot running through there, so I'm lucky it only took one or two tries to beat Paarl. Unseen Village was a bit of a pain at first, but after finding the bell ringers it was all good.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Theres nothing left to say about Bloodborne which hasnt already been said so Ill say the most important thing:

The sky and cosmos are one.

OP - are you me?

Deus Ex is GOAT but I adore Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. I tend to say Demon's is my favorite (Dark Souls 1 was the first of any I played btw, so its not nostalgia) - I love the desolate, confusing, nihilistic feeling of DeS.

Buuuut Bloodborne is AMAZING. I'd have to say they're tied.

BB vs. DeS is a debate I have with myself that is now on par with which MGS between 1-3 is the best.

Btw, OP - Guns are hella useful, but you have to learn to riposte with them. I own people in PvP thanks to learning to riposte properly (Ludwig 1h + the shotgun)

Yo, OP, learn to wield the gun. You're not touching the final boss of the main game unless you use your gun.

Overall, it is an amazing game :)

Bloodborne is soooo good. Learn the parry mechanic OP! It makes the combat loop incredibly satisfying in comparison.

Do you all recommend doing a NG+ as a second playthrough or is it more enjoyable to restart a new character?

Its your choice really. I played through the game 4 times and did a new playthrough everytime.

Beat the game 4 times and got the Platinum, never learned to parry :)

I just can't get into a souls game.
I'd like to. I feel like I'm missing out.

Combat feels clunky to me. I don't like that as soon as you commit to an attack you have to wait out the long animation, regardless of what happens to you.

Amazing game. The bosses are great, especially the hunters ones, each weapon provides a different feel for the game unlike Dark Souls 3 weapons which are very boring and each one feels the same like the other. Pretty much everything the OP mentioned. Also it's a big plus that the DLC is even better than the main game.

I didn't like the BoM at first but it really clicked with me in the DLC. I used it for almost every boss. Yeah, it has short range, but it's so damn fast in a game where you're already fast. I didn't even know it was nerfed. What happened to it?

It's the only weapon that's so fast that I'm somewhat comfortable hitting back in between boss swings. I sometimes do shit like dodge > stab > dodge > stab with it while the boss is doing some swing combo and hitting nothing with it. It's amazing.

Plus the magnetic transform and collapse animations just look so fucking cool.

Oh man, the transform attack IS the Chikage's bread and butter. One of my characters is a Bloodtinge build with the Chikage in mind. If you ever play PVP with the Chikage then catching someone with the transform attack is absolutely devastating. Does massive damage, staggers them, and leads into a combo of a couple hits usually. Anime as all hell. No other katana in the series plays that way.

Yep. The second I got the Chikage on my "regular" first character, I knew I had to make a bloodtinge character just for it. Ended up being my favorite character, I just can't get enough of the Chikage and its quickdraw attack. Badass looking and devastating? I'll take it. Let me tell you, that Maria bossfight was hell with her, though (she's strong against blood attacks and my character was all in bloodtinge) until I got the timing of her attacks and could consistently pull reversals / viscerals.

I've never, ever considered making another character just for a weapon in any of the Souls games. In Bloodborne I've made two (there's no way I wasn't going to make an arcane / strength character after seeing the Holy Moonlight Sword). Souls games are awesome, and superior to BB in some respects, but in terms of weapons, there is simply nothing resembling competition.

So far my favorite weapons have been Threaded Cane and Blades. The reason why I'm quoting you is because I needed to agree on how fucking cool the transformation looks and feels. That double handed lunge down or whatever it was is extremely vicious looking.

You do eventually speed up if you keep your combo going, right? I didn't know if I remembered this right or not but that's how I recall it.

After platinum on BB, I went back to play DS with DSFix on PC and it's a little slow for me. I really appreciate the fast-paced combat systems in BB.

i suppose... lol i couldn't imagine using it as a main weapon but i guess that's the good thing about the game you can have so many builds.
Ehhh no you don't have "so many builds" at all. You have str, dex, quality, arcane, and bloodtinge. That's it. I love the game but I don't like how it streamlined the RPG elements so much, Dark Souls games are better RPGs.

The crazy thing is that I would dispute that claim... by citing the second DLC boss. They did not hit the ball out of the park with The Old Hunters, they put it in fucking orbit.
You were that impressed by the
Living Failures
? :p
Ludwig is the first DLC boss, if you meant him. If you meant Lady Maria, she's 3rd. Unless you meant Laurence but he's not really "second", he can be fought at any time after Ludwig as he's optional.

It's the opposite of clunky. People who use the word clunky to describe Souls/BB combat are clueless.

Clunky means awkward. In Soulsborne games you have absolute control over what you do in combat, all the time, and there's pretty much never a moment where you say "NO I didn't mean to do that!". It's precise and deliberate. And yes that means you can't cancel out of all animations. That means you have to choose properly when to attack, when to combo, when to NOT combo but hit-and-run, when and where to dodge, etc.

The new GOAT is the Rakuyo. It's fucking amazing.

How come is it that few people give love to the awesome Threaded Cane?

Bloodborne being a legitimate horror game did wonders for it, can't count how many times I got spooked.

Surprised OP hasn't commented about the game's amazing soundtrack.

I'm forever a threaded cane main. I love it.

I just did a playthrough with Beast Claws. They are fun, though I had to switch back to the transformed Saw Cleaver for some bosses that really benefit from decent reach (defiled Amy, Ebrietas).

Wrecked the shit out of the first DLC boss with my claws though, that was funny:

I exclusively used the Threaded Cane. Best weapon.

Yup! My main character runs BoM + Cane, though I've been experimenting with the Rakuyo recently. I used to swear by the cane alone until I found that the BoM worked better for me against the DLC bosses.

Using BoM against
Maria
was one of the most fun fights I had in the game purely because of how fucking stylish it looked to have two dual-wielders fighting each other with transforming weapons. I'm not all that familiar with the BoM's transform attacks, but I just did them anyway just because I saw the boss doing them and thought it would look cool if I did some myself.

And yes, the transformed R1 spam speeds up after the first few hits for high damage, and I think the damage scales up too. Too bad it takes a while to ramp up to that, though. It's great damage once you get someone flinching.

I'm getting a PS4 this weekend and this is the first game I'm playing. As someone who just played through Dark Souls for the first time, I really can't wait.

The cane makes it the 3D Castlevania that the Castlevania series should've deserved and will never even remotely come close to touching.

I'm mixed about the Rakyuo. It seems to be a much more practical but slower version of the BoM, but I was never a fan of twinblades, plus the transform animations don't look as cool as the BoM's.

You could play Bloodborne and immediately throw your PS4 out the window, and your purchase would still be worth it.

Can't bring myself to play it. The old victorian style theme (armor... or lack thereof) kills it for me. Souls is more my forte aesthetically.
