Well, that hasn't been the case with the game for a while now. You can solo almost all of the story content at this point.

I heard that, but hadn't looked into it yet. I definitely plan on getting through it ahead of an eventful end of life announcement, so I'm sure they'll force my hand to come back and try it at some point.

It's sad to see it officially end though. I mean I was just playing it back in December. Even worse when they dress the carcass in a couple of mobile cash-ins. Wanted to see it sent off to die properly.

Yeah, I totally get that.

It's a small detail but just announcing the final chapter with more details and a proper logo would've felt much more satisfying.

So I get to keep playing on PC, plus there's a new final expansion thingy? How is this bad news? I don't own a cell phone so I couldn't care less about the mobile stuffs.

Is Seekers of Adoulin's story content mostly soloable too? Grind-heavy?

It's the only thing I haven't done yet.

A lot is soloable with trusts, there are a few fights (particularly later on) that are not.
But even just a few actual PCs is enough.

What I want to know is if the mobile project will be just a mobile optimized port of Final Fantasy XI (like Dragon Quest X) or a "lite" version of the game with different servers and content.

I'm guessing the latter... but it would be redundant since it seems like Grandmasters already fulfills that role.

Aw man. I never really got into FFXI, but this seems like such a halfhearted send off to me. Oh well, it's SquEnix. What did I expect.

It's a mix of those things. It's the full FF11 game (seemingly), with mobile-optimized mechanics and interface. Separate servers, from what it sounds like. Grandmasters doesn't fill this role, Grandmasters is a new game that just happens to be set in Vana'diel.

You can keep playing on PC but they're flat out telling you they're gonna stop making content for it after this year. Feels morbid for an MMO. Look how long stuff like EQ kept making content. They could have went the F2P, server merge, and new expansion pack and kept it going. They just really want people to move on, imo.

I'm at least glad I stayed up. Because of how weird I am I would have been waking up over and over again having oddball dreams especially since I'd felt from the tone of the first announcement this would not be good.

And I figure this Nexon version is their answer to all of you going "but I want SP, I don't want to not have played a mainline FF." Well, you get that instead.

And a giant be careful what you wish for to everyone who wanted console support dropped. I always said it wouldn't change a damn thing when it happened.

Yeah, the main thing is that they've announced that the upcoming content updates are going to be the last episode of the game. They're telling their players to be ready to move on to the next game, FFXIV or the Nexon's FFXI.

They were really scarce on the details, but I think you're on the right track as to figuring out what exactly the mobile project will be.

I wonder how the content and game play will translate to mobile devices.

They aren't going to get that many of Final Fantasy XI's subscribers to move on to XIV since many XI veterans don't like the direction Yoshi P took with the game after he took over. I remember many XI players trying out XIV only to quickly return after A Realm Reborn was released.

I guess I was just expecting the worst and any new content is the opposite of that to me. No big version updates after November? That's not an issue as long as I can keep playing with my friends and family for a bit longer. Plus, who is to say they won't do a server merger in the future? I feel like that could still happen under the guise of "maintenance & balance*.

I don't really feel that the Nexon version is targeted towards people who want a SP FFXI. It seems more like a business decision that will allow them to take what they have made with FFXI over all these years and introduce them to a new larger audience as an ongoing revenue stream from 2016 and beyond. It's still going to be an online service based MMO game, and honestly, since it is likely to be F2P, the barriers they put in place might be even less appealing to people who just want to play for the story, lol.

Why Nexon, though.

Anyway, does the FFXI client still use that convoluted playonline ID and terrible patching system? I might have felt tempted to run around in the starting area again for a month or so, just for the sake of nostalgia. I doubt I want to slog through that crap again, though.

I don't even ask that much, I just want them to breath new life into FFXI. It deserves so much more than to just wither and die. Killing the console versions just sucks so much to me, but like bring the damn game to PS4 as a free download, and just charge the sub. Seriously...if fucking Everquest can still be alive, FFXI deserves to keep going.
FFXI is dying for a long time, it too old and too hardcore for anyone but hardcore fans. Asking to bring it to PS4 or make a remake is pointless as there are just no audience for it to justify cost (and PS4 already have much more popular in general crowd FF14)

It was what I was expected from this announcement, They essentially move game into life-support mode, significantly reduce their team and let those fans who want to play continue do so, but have zero expectation about real future for this game (on current platforms). They surely have a better use of resources than expand FFXI.

You have been able to start the game almost instantaneously for a long time now, but yes it still uses PlayOnline. I loved PlayOnline, even if only for its beautiful music.

Pretty sure it's the only Square Enix music you can't get an OST for?

It's very nice "internet" music, though.

lol I meant more along the lines of YOU WANTED SP BECAUSE WE WOULD SHUT DOWN THE SERVERS ONE DAY?! TOO BAD!

Instead NEW MOBILE GAME SERVERS SO YOU CAN'T SAY WE TOOK THE GAME AWAY!

SUCK ON IT!

But imagine that being said in extremely polite Japanese.

IIRC it ended up being a disc two in some OST I have.

Which was weird to be because I actually have NEVER heard the POL music. My brother shut it off for my install.

If we are getting the full FFXI experience on mobile with the same visuals and camera view, then that's awesome. Is that what we're getting?

I'm also gonna start up FFXI on PC next month and complete the story. Can the story be completed alone or do I need a party?

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
Man this makes me tempted to log back into FFXI issue is would need to recover all my account info etc.

Wonder if my account even still exists lol.

Id like to see SQEX take all of the FFXI assets and make a SP / co-op action rpg instead that goes through the same general story.

Wow...First, SE created a series named FF that lasts like if it were Forever Fantasy.
And now, they are coining a new term for MMMORPG.
Even technically, it would still be the MMORPG genre but on mobile instead....you know, like every other mobile MMO games that are already on the mobile platform.
You don't need to create a stupid term that already exists SE.

Yeah I totally agree with that. This is S-E's solution to the concern of FFXI being "gone" forever. They are winding down the original game now, and targeting mobile is their next step. Unless something changes in the future, converting the game into a SP console experience doesn't even cross their mind. :)

Square-Enix didn't really tell us anything so we don't know for certainty.

Yes, for the most part but if you need any help I am sure someone will help you on whatever server you choose to start on.

With all of the talk here about a switch to single player I got really excited about that. Shame it isn't so. I'm very hesitant of paying a monthly fee. Chances are it would translate to a euro an hour. Still, I just went to the FFXI European site and wanted to try the free trial, but I get a message that there are currently no free access codes left :S

Ok last bit before I go get some sleep really.

The free trial which they do on occasion is INCREDIBLY crippled. Like insanely. It's to avoid RMTs but the limitations are extreme. Worse, because of how leveling is now and Trusts, you will hit your level and area limitations loooooong before the two weeks. And you'll be limited in how you communicate with anyone who is trying to help you due to the aforementioned crippling.

If someone is thinking of playing now (and this is coming from someone who started 1/1/11 with the thought of "surely they aren't doing any more content for this game") you are better off getting the game on sale and using your initial "free" 30 days to determine if it worth continuing. At least then you'll actually get a real taste of what the game is like.

Reeeeaaally? It might be time to come back, then. Back when I quit supposedly */DNC could solo a lot of things, but it was my experience that it was near impossible without impossible to get gear.

I do wish they'd do a combined FFXIV / FFXI / DQX sub fee.

Too bad we'll never see the southern continent lol.

I hope the storyline for the final event isn't too silly. What they did for Apocalypse Nigh was rather lame.

Thanks! I think I'll just put it on my Steam wishlist then, until a discount comes along.

I feel like this announcement was the only chance we would ever get to see a SP FFXI and they just took a different route than what some of us were hoping for. At this point it's not just very unlikely, but actually a no way in hell kind of thing.

The POL music is so good. I miss Noriko Matsueda so much.

I listen to it every now and then. It's so great. Wow... "Piece of Mind", "Dolphin", "Space"... Feeling all the feels right now...

Yeah I wonder how far they can go. I mean, don't you fight
the protocrystal in a form of a dragon or something
in one of the latest add-ons before Adoulin?

Also, we will never see the Northen Gigas continent... the Eastern land where Tenzen comes from... man, so much stuff yet in FFXI lore that we will miss.

I'm wondering how they are going to fit the whole of FFXI onto a phone. The compression will be massive.

With the PS2 and 360 services being cut finally, does this mean RAM limitations are no longer an issue? Will they create content that goes beyond anything they've tried before?

I went into that expecting the worst. SE still found a way to disappoint. Hopefully Rhapsodies of Vana’diel will make for a nice send off because the idea of FFXI going mobile via Nexon leaves me sour.
