GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
The NFL deal was a bad thing?
How many people on GAF actually care about it?

How many people are buying it an Xbox One because of it?

How does it make watching football games better?

Most important question:
How man first party games could they have funded with the $400M they spent?

he did the obvious that anyone could have done. price cut + get rid of Kinect. but lack of true exclusives, worse 3rd party games and worse hardware will always keep them at the back.

I dont really believe in the Spencer effect.

You only need to look at what he has been doing before becoming head of xbox this year to know he isnt "all about the games"

He was in charge of MS studios for most of the 360 generation and can be blamed for its lackluster output. He was responsible for that NFL deal. He was more then happy to shill Kinect and DRM in 2013.

Since taking charge of xbox Cancelling Back Tusks new IP in favour of more Gears of War. Paying to keep Tomb Raider of PC and PlayStation. Spending what could be a entire generation of 1th party development costs on buying Mojang and Minecraft.

In the last 6 months MS had done a better job rebranding Phil Spencer then they have with the Xbox One.

Now it is a bit early to say what will happen with Phil. New games take time. He cant magically make them appear out of the air. Everything this year was probably in the works for a while. Next year should be the real sign of if Phil is actually taking xbox in a better direction or not.

Why are these shitty things always watermarked with NeoGAF and Reddit? It looks tacky as fuck.

I like Xbox, but this stuff makes me cringe. Digital flyers aren't going to change many minds on the internet.

OP must really love Phil. Let's not forget that he was there in the beginning when Xbox was being introduced, I am sure he agreed with a lot of the past decisions.

Now Microsoft apologizes their past decisions only because they couldn't get away with it.

Their apology isn't sincere they just want our money. They change what they can to improve their brand and minimize loss and at the same time get you to try and buy their stuff. If that means going back on their word then so be it but dont take their apologies for actually caring, they just want your money. All these game companies want your money.

Early days yet. Everything he's done so far is business 101 - a back to basics strategy focused on unpicking what failed and reusing strategies that worked historically. Anyone competent would make the same moves.

He's a not bad choice as public face of Xbox and has mostly done a good job in that capacity.

His - and MS PR in general - somewhat irritated respone to the negative PR on Rise deal shows there's still an underlying issue with handling challenges though.

The deal itself to me indicates he and the division haven't totally grasped this gen's market trends as well as Sony at this point. Big timed exclusives for known properties are frowned on now and MS totally misread that.

But he's driven some decent change. I doubt it'll become anything miraculous as by this point he's simply heading up the charge for a less popular product and there's only souch you can do in that position.

What's with GAF logo on the graphic BTW? Is that okay or frowned on?

They are doing good, and yeah, if Phil Spencer is reponsible for many of the recent X1 improvements, then he's succeeding with flying colors.

Honestly, with Forza Horizon 2 seemingly turning out to be a serious killer app (and being one of the best looking games for XB1/PS4), Sunset overdrive and Master Chief collection on the horizon, not to mention all the constant updates, Xbox One is seriously looking good in my opinion.

I have both a decked out PC and a PS4, and I'm more excited for the X1 than the PS4 right now. The OS is vastly better, DLNA and matroska support, but overall it's just proving its worth for the time being.

Any time someone says that "instead of spending money on this thing they could of made new games!!!!!" I start to wonder it they realize M$ is filthy rich and can spend as much as they want.

People are acting like the guy just joined xbox, way too much credit. He was at the company when all the bad decisions went down.

That deal wasn't just for Xbox.
And GAF is clearly not the target of a deal like that.

you obviously don't know anything about business... you already have shareholders wanting to ax the games division all together because of financial losses. smart business would be to invest in new ip's.. but whatever

Spencer is a cool bro and all but my problems with the 'Bone are things that are already set in stone. The hardware was very poorly designed and I still find the price they're trying to sell it for ridiculous. And as the sales show, I guess I'm not the only one. Spencer has an uphill battle in getting people to buy a weaker system for the same price as a more powerful system with better support from first parties and better looking third party games.

lol.... no.

I forget what publication stated it, they mentioned that PS4 is winning even though its boring. It's a great games system, and not much else at this time.

That is fine and all, but I really like snap on X1, and with the visuals it is starting to pump out, I'm just liking the system better right now. it feels like a great new experience to me, while PS4 is more like a PS3 with nicer visuals and streamlined usability.

An improvement over Mattrick for sure but I'm still not completely sold on his vision and leadership just yet.

-Since he took over the PS4 has increased it's WW sales ratio to greater than 2:1 vs xb1
- Another sign for worry is that in Spencer's previous job as head of microsoft WW studios he was responsible for making sure the Kinect had proper product support to drive success for the platform. Clearly he dropped the ball on that roadmap and once he was put in charge basically kicked it to the curb and acts like he had nothing to do with it's failure.
- Their upcoming software library is still lackluster vs PS4's from all angles:
+1st party portfoilo = advantage sony (bloodborne, yes please)
+3rd party exclusives = advantage sony (mostly because of Japanese titles)
+Indies = advantage sony
- With Kinect on it's last dying breath - does he have a new tech gimmick offering to counter any potential advantage Sony might achieve with Morpheus?
- Don't like the fact that he didn't 'clean house' and start fresh with new executive talent once he took over. We're basically getting more of the same with the likes of Yusuf Mehdi and Aaron Greenberg running brand and marketing.

Spencer's story is only really just starting to unfold - so far, Grade = C

Are you aware that Xbox has more money than that and essentially has no budget?
It's more complicated than that and that's not how it works. The Xbox division Microsoft is presently bleeding money and there are investors that want to spin it off or eliminate it. It's never not been a cash sink with occasional minimal profits versus any of their other divisions.
Any time someone says that "instead of spending money on this thing they could of made new games!!!!!" I start to wonder it they realize M$ is filthy rich and can spend as much as they want.
Friendly warning-- Use of "M$" in a derogatory manner is a bannable offense on sight at mod's discretion.

This is some creepy shrine in a closet image.

IMO the Tomb Raider deal and the fact that he was directly involved in the original Xbox one concept, makes him talk out of both sides of his face.

I think this was always going to be the route Microsoft took with the Xbox One after the DRM debacle, and after the consumers clearly made a choice. Wether Phil Sencer was at the helm or not.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. That's why everyone loved Sony from 2008 onward. They were fighting for us with all they had.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
I like Spencer, from all the (former) Xbox One team he always looked to me like the more sensible of all of them. But some people really like to pretend that he wasn't there pushing the original vision of the Xbox one and that several of those changes on the list would have happened no matter who was head of the Xbox division.

The Tomb Raider debacle soured me on him. The announcement itself was bad enough, but made far worse by the several days of bullshit that spewed from MS and CD.

Although they will never recover from the XB1 reveal in my eyes

What the hell? This thread and the Nintendo Prime thread really make me wonder how devoted you guys are to these corporations.

And yet after well over a decade in the console industry they continue to overwhelmingly spend their money on things other than new games.

For the amount of money that they've poured into stuff like Minecraft, the Gears license, securing Titanfall exclusivity, the pointless TV studio they shut down this year, the NFL license...etc. that could have set up a first party studio ecosystem as big if not bigger than Sony's. Instead they continue to have rings run around their in-house developments.

With the amount of money they have and the length of time they've been in the industry they have no excuses to be so far behind.
