Can someone in simple English describe to me why Sony/FROM has not released a direct feed footage of the stage demo to the public? What's the holdup?

Low framerate led to fear that gamers would react as usual, screaming at the top of their lungs about the game being terrible and never running well. Will be shown once those issues are ironed out. (The previous was all assumptions.)

I'm guessing it's because of how critical some people can be. Especially after the whole Dark Souls II downgrade thing. The game apparently isn't optimized much right now so the framerate isn't very stable. I guess they don't want the public to see it like that. Though the people who have seen it seem to be raving about it. I'm sure we'll see it soon.

Unpolished. I mean look at the idiots already writing it off with "LOL SLIDE SHOW FRAMERATE SUCKS TOTAL SHIT" comments on YouTube and elsewhere. They want it out there officially when it's ready.

I appreciated what Tower of Latria did, but wasn't the biggest fan of the environment...truth be told I prefer environments like Majula, Anor Londo, Undead Parish - brighter and more open. I know Bloodborne will be oppressive, but hopefully it's all like that.

Too right. Depending on where you look, even members of the press seem to be causing an unecessary stir. It's a pre-alpha build being shown behind closed doors for technical reasons. There's no controversy to be had here, games journalists, so just keep your hilarious puns about Dark Souls "framerate nostalgia" to yourself and your office pals.

Is it possible the game is set in one big city? It probably has underground locations and interiors but I get this feeling for some reason, like they are taking a classic approach to this style where some city/village has gone weird and someone goes to investigate.

I think it will be set in one big city. That's what the info so far seems to suggest.

The hat design for the hero is legit. No doubt focus testing or more standard tastes would have discarded it for something dull. Like a hat without "ears".

Lovely art. Judging by the off-screen footage that we've seen, the concept art is being fully realized.

As it should be or have been since the beginning of gaming, so happy.
Even happier that we might see in-game footage at GamesCom or TGS (assuming they show new stuff and not the E3 trailer again).

That's one of the things i love about the soul series and it's clear this spiritual successor takes from that.. There's a certain feeling concept art gives off and when the game doesn't manage to look like it i feel like it i feel kinda disappointed.

I actually think I'm getting a ps4 now. Yes, I know nothing was shown of this game, but I traded my 360 for a ps3 just to play DeS (totally worth it) and have loved every Souls entry so I have my faith in them. I may pick up that beautiful white Destiny Bundle, as I doubt this game will get one of it's own.

Probably more/direct footage at TGS.

I believe the guns are basically your shield by the sound of it.

If an enemy attacks, you can counter-attack and stun them with the blunderbuss, giving you an opening for attack. Think of this as using your shield to parry.

That is the impression I got at least.

That's pretty accurate from what I saw.

Instead of using a shield to parry and riposte, I noticed that the demoer fired the gun the moment the enemy attacked, and the enemy staggered back like when you initiate a parry and riposte, and then the player attacked with the right handed Sawcleaver and killed it.

I hadn't connected it at the time, but yes, it even did the "riposte" sound effect when it happened.


I also updated my impressions a bit on my blog, as I forgot a few things in my original post.

Likely already posted, but I'm sure no one will mind seeing this again.

The funny thing is that that gif pales in comparison to how fucking amazing this game looks running on a PS4 in person. The level of detail in this game is just insane. That gif is great, but man. I can't wait to get my hands on this game!

The framerate was pretty poor. Sub-30fps. I know a lot of us can see past that as far as demos of a game that's still 8 months away goes, but I think the general public may not respond as well. The game is looking fucking incredible, but yeah, the framerate is too unstable, and the game deserves a better "wide release" gameplay footage than that.

The good news, is that E3 builds tend to be using really old code, so I'm sure what From has at the offices is a lot more up to date and polished than the E3 build. Back when I worked at Obsidian, we had a separate, E3 build we had to QA, and then the actual game's build. We had to make sure the E3 build was solid, but we only had a few months to do it. Needless to say, we were glad when E3 was over, so we could go back to working on the full game again.

I'm sure in another few weeks we'll get some really good (carefully compiled) gameplay videos of the game. Of course, that's easy for me to say, I've already seen the full demo in person. Twice. :p
