Will Battle Royale still be the most popular genre in three years?

The year is 2026...is Battle Royale still the dominant genre?

  • Yes, Battle Royale will still sit atop its throne in 2026.

  • No, Extraction shooters will usurp BR by then.

  • No, Survival games will be #1 by then.

  • No, Creation types games (Roblox, Dreams) will be the dominant genre by then.

  • No, some other genre we can't predict will emerge in 3 years.

  • No, but I'll explain in the thread below.

Action adventures, and not battle royales, are the most popular genre and I think they'll continue being it.

In the case of shooters, I think BR will decrease favoring instead more social and coop aspects of game like team based PVE or PVPVE stuff having two branches: one more casual friendly and social side, and other one more eSports/hardcore friendly competitive side. I think we'll see less BR only games and that BR will remain in some games as another game mode more.

But well, the few top BR who are super popular today I think will continue being super popular during years.

except that there barely are any action adventures these days and the term action adventure has been changed to basically mean "miscellaneous"

I remember a lot of people were saying it's just a fad! and it will be forgotten quickly, but I think this "fad" will continue until new kind of "fads" emerge and I hope that will be soon.

Battle Royales never even really started, and its still popular.

TitanFall ppl pulled it off with Apex
Fortnite saved their ass, by adding the BR.
Tetris 99 and Fall Guys are great.

Battlefield tried and failed. Hyperscape sucked. Blood Hunt kinda sucks
COD made one of the best ones with Black Out. Then it died. Now they've put out 2 worse ones with Warzone.

Star Wars Battlefront should have one. Destiny should have one. Halo needs one. Division. Gears of War.

There are many action adventures these days, including some of the best selling games of the year. Games like God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man, AC etc are action adventures.

Extraction looters are going to be the next gaming hype. Escape from Tarkov is a nice little proof of concept for the industry giants to release their AAA+, super polished, mainstream friendly versions.

Also Dark and Darker is going to blow the fuck up when it releases and will add to the extraction looter hype. I also think high/dark fantasy settings with classic D&D vibes, could become more popular due to this.

What's going on right now feels very similar to H1Z1 + the Culling, just before PUBG blew up and took the market by storm.

Think Battle Royale but when you drop in and find high value loot, you can leave the match early (by getting to extract zone safely) and keep said loot.

That way you're building a character over a 20hr - 50hr period rather than starting with nothing like you do in BR games.
Like Division 2?

Spider Man is not an action adventure, neither is AC.

that's what I mean, the genre label lost all its meaning because people assign games to it with vastly different designs and gameplay focuses.

the archetypical Action Adventure is something like Ocarina of Time.
how can Ocarina of Time be the same genre as Spider-Man? what do they have in common? basically nothing

BRs won't die but they are at a point of maturity, like MOBAs. It's unlikely that apart from the current 4 top titles (PUBG, Fortnite, Apex and Warzone) you'll see record breaking success, you'll get some one offs like Naraka that had a good spin on it, but that's about it. The time for free money for just making a decent BR is over.

they probably wont be popular from now but i have no idea what's the most popular game with Gen Z currently so it's up in the air for me

Is this referring to single titles or as a whole? If as a whole I think survival games already have BR beat.

Extraction shooters are the solution since you can choose to engage in PVP and risk as much as you want, or you can get out of the match and bring the good stuff with you.
There needs to be something on the line, though, without the game being too obtuse.

I would say somewhere between Escape From Tarkov and DMZ you would be in a pretty good spot.

So the first big developer that nails this balance gets the phat loot ($$$$$$$).
If someone makes a Tarkov-like that is playable with a gamepad, that would defiantly rake in the cash.

I mean, you and every game outlet, reviewer and award show these days.

the term truly has become "etc." and lost it's original meaning around the first few years of the Xbox 360 generation I think.
before that it was pretty clearly defined as an action game with a big parts of solving puzzles and/or overcoming environmental obstacles with items you found elsewhere.

it was a mix of action game and many text/Point & click/graphics adventure elements... hence action adventure...

From talking with my nephews and nieces 12 and under, they are all mostly discussing Roblox, Minecraft, sometimes Apex mobile, and other small phone games. Sometimes they will also bring up things like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, or Pokémon but that’s because of heavy parental influence. Otherwise, I don’t think they would care at all about having a switch because they are glued to their tablets and phones.

If everyone is wondering why the big publishers keep trying to figure out mobile spaces and profits and offer most of their games on mobile as an additional platform(like Genshin Impact, Apex mobile, CoD mobile), it’s because they see the writing on the wall within 30ish years.

The gens older than Z are simply keeping things like consoles on life support and we aren’t aware of this because we see sales numbers every month indicating otherwise. However, what we don’t see is how much monumentally larger the mobile profits are, like how an ant would not be aware of another planet or even a solar system for that matter.

Battle royale but with car combat. Do zoomers not like cars? Not sure why this is not a thing, it's a match made in heaven

Make them electric and with non lethal guns so that they do not take offense.
I would play the crap out of that. There's something really fun about being in a vehicle in a BR. Why not start with one?
Been a thing for years...but lost in the sea of Steam. It's kinda janky, but fun.

Blackout is alive and well. Still play it here and there.

Yes, they are and even mention it on their game stores like PSN when listing their genres (even if AC added RPG elements, so it can also be considered a RPG). They aren't soccer games.

They have both action (combat mechanics frequently used) and adventure (a story that is somewhat important, exploration, etc), so they are an action adventure.

Ocarina was only one of them, one of the earlier 3D ones. Nowadays the archetypical action adventures are the Sony, Rockstar and Ubisoft blockbusters.

What do you mean, a PvP game where you have to loot and extract it if not losing it? Sounds like one of the modes of The Division.

useless argument. genres in these stores are not only vague they also are often completely off the mark.

if you agree with the PS store then Destiny 2 is literally an action adventure... look it up.

edit: here's your action adventure Destiny 2
screenshot_20230120_1tlcxp.jpg

Also apparently it's a 3rd person shooter as wellnas we can see... because you go into third person breifly from time to time it of course needs to be categorised as such 🤣

They have both action (combat mechanics frequently used) and adventure (a story that is somewhat important, exploration, etc), so they are an action adventure.

Ocarina was only one of them, one of the earlier 3D ones. Nowadays the archetypical action adventures are the Sony, Rockstar and Ubisoft blockbusters.

you basically agree it's a completely worthless definition then.

you basically say that EVERY GAME that has action is an action adventure.

define adventure here, because I fail to see how Spider-Man goes on an adventure.
he's literally swinging around his home town, doing so fo years and years, fighting the same crimes over and over until some bigger baddies show up.

how is that an adventure? that makes no sense.

you describe games that have NOTHING in common that are all somehow in the same genre, and then say "well there's action... and adventure" which is like I said nonsense and not a sufficient genre definition in games, as games are usually defined by game mechanics and game design not by theme. even horror games are subcategorized into other gameplay/gamedesign based genres.

by your definition literally every single videogame that isn't highly specialised should be put into the Action Adventure category.

I mean, Doomslayer goes through a lot of action in his games, and arguably through an adventure... so Doom 2016 is an action adventure then.

Master Chief is in the same boat isn't he? even more so actually... in Halo CE he's on an adventure on an unknown ring planet, and there action!

what about Super Meat Boy? he is on an adventure so save his girlfriend, and there's lots of action on the way there!
So Super Meat Boy goes into the Action Adventure bucket too!

Diablo 3, there's action and you adventure through dungeons and a dark world...
+1 Action Adventure.

basically every single action RPG would then qualify as well right?
like The Last Story, all the Star Ocean games, Final Fantasy XV etc.

all Super Mario Bros. games and 3D Mario games then also clearly action adventures. basically the same scenario as Super Meat Boy here.
another game for the Action Adventure bucket.

is Minecraft one as well? there's of course action as you fight skeletons and zombies etc. and you're on an adventure to get to the end and beat the ender dragon 🤔...
yet another Action Adventure found!

Forza Horizon maybe? I mean the car races in that game can have a lot of action, there are big jumps and you can ram your enemies off the track... and your driver is on an adventure to become the best racedriver in the Horizon Festival!
so please welcome the Action Adventure Forza Horizon!

Every game that isn't turn based and doesn't have zero enemies is an action adventure if you go by your defining factors here.
which isn't far off from how the term is used by journalists of course these days.
which is my whole point.

the current definition (which isn't a real definition) is so vague that it's literally "etc." or "miscellaneous"

They are facts, not useless arguments. If you can't handle reality then it's your issue.

you basically say that EVERY GAME that has action is an action adventure.
No, games can have action and not be an action or action adventure game.

define adventure here, because I fail to see how Spider-Man goes on an adventure.ç
Go and check in wikipedia what is an action game, an adventure game and an action adventure game.

basically every single action RPG would then qualify as well right?
Yes, action RPGs are one of the many genres and subgenres included inside the adventure games and particularly action adventures.

all Super Mario Bros. games and 3D Mario games then also clearly action adventures. basically the same scenario as Super Meat Boy here.
another game for the Action Adventure bucket.
The Super Mario Bros and Super Meat Boy are action platformers. But Mario 3D platformers have more emphasis on the narrative/story, so they can qualify as action adventures too.

is Minecraft one as well? there's of course action as you fight skeletons and zombies etc. and you're on an adventure to get to the end and beat the ender dragon 🤔...
yet another Action Adventure found!
Minecraft is a sandbox survival game so yes, it's an action adventure.

Forza Horizon maybe? I mean the car races in that game can have a lot of action, there are big jumps and you can ram your enemies off the track... and your driver is on an adventure to become the best racedriver in the Horizon Festival!
so please welcome the Action Adventure Forza Horizon!
No, it's a racing game

Every game that isn't turn based and doesn't have zero enemies is an action adventure if you go by your defining factors here.
No. You only need to learn to read its definition to know what an action adventure game is, what an action game is, what an adventure game is and what the other game genres are. And if you think places like wikipedia are wrong you can go to the game stores if these games include the action adventure tag, either together or having "action" and "adventure" separatedly.

In some game genres isn't needed to specify that it's an action adventure because knowing that a game is from certain genre it implies that it's an action adventure too, because action adventures is a very wide concept / genre.

I wonder if Fractions/TLOU2 multiplayer will focus on extraction based gameplay or have an extraction mode? If it works in The Division, I could see it working in Fractions, if it is given some polish.
