It normalised the twin twick controls for shooters that are still used now.
It paved the way for big esports tournaments with high cash prizes.
It litetally spawned a flood of copycat games.
It introduced and made vehicles viable in a fps game to the point that the half life then introduced the buggy and unreal tournament 2004 introduced vehicles.
It had big scale battles that allowed the player freedom to choose how to approach these battles in various tactical decisions. Prior most fps were small set pieces or corridors.
But because Its an MS 1st party title and xbox is shit, it dont get the respect it once garnered.

Metroid prime is fantastic. I loved that game. But in terms of impact. Its a no brainer.

Twin sticks, sure. It's definitely the best feeling console FPS there. It introduced the "weighty" controls that a lot of console FPS have adopted.

eSports? Maybe console specific eSports. Halo wasn't close to things like Counter Strike though and was never really taken seriously.

Which games would you consider to be Halo copycats? Honestly can't think of any prominent/popular ones. Destiny is the closest thing for obvious reasons.

Vehicles, sure I suppose. I'd say BF was the influencer there but Halo definitely was one of the first regardless.

Halo just MADE the MLG and the FPS esport on console...

People were crying for decade to get H3 on PC, and now it's finally here and there still no more than 5 FPS that you would want to play over H3 on PC again in 2021.

next poll. which is better, Street Fighter 2 or Super Mario Bros. 3?

for real tho, these games are not even remotely the same genre. they use the same perspective and that's about it.

In failure rates, sure. Even with all those repurchases from failed system, it still couldn't match the PS3 or Wii in lifetime sales. If the other two were trash and forgotten, what does that make the 360?

the 360 was objectively the better system, and if Europe wasn't such a giant Sony fanboy land it would have lost. people bought it not because of exclusives, not because it was better but because it was named PlayStation 3... that's the only reason.
oh and japan... and even tho in Japan it wasn't even close, the 360 was still close behind the PS3 globally.

I like Prime more in a lot of areas, like music, but in level design in particular it crushes Halo with its detailed, interconnected environment. I played them close together and the identical looking grey and purple corridors of Halo were such a bummer.
Yup. I replayed Prime about 2 years ago on dolphin (looks great btw) and the game is super impressive in many ways but the level design is top notch.

I played through Halo CE via MCC on PC co op with one of my friends last year. Navigating the levels in Halo 1 is a nightmare. When you're in the midst of battles it still holds up and feels great, but half the time you're trying to remember if that's the direction you just came from or not.

The PS3 was an objectively better system. Global sales numbers bear that out. The only reason Microsoft was close was due to their early launch and Sony's disastrous "two jobs" launch. Wii was objectively the best system. Global sales numbers bear that out. The real folly is taking any of this seriously. I'm just perverting Chris Chan's stupid perversion of this topic for giggles.

I was there, the 360 was the lead platform.

The lead for :

Online (more stable, party feature)
for 3rd party games
Graphics (superior versions)
FPS (Halo 3, Halo Reach)
Fighting games (SF4, Virtua Fighter)
Racing (FM2, FM3, FM4)

And Minecraft at the end of the generation to close it.

The 360 eaten the PS3 alive, the Wii was just a Nintendo joke and they tried again with the WiiU but didn't work twice.

Nintendo fanboys will vote for Metroid and almost everyone else (i.e. mature people) will vote for Halo.

The Halo CE music theme all alone DESTROYS Metroid Prime already...

Halo is a way WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY better franchise than Metroid.

Halo carried a console for 20 years, Metroid did nothing...

Time for an oldy but goody. My god, I hadn't seen this in more than a decade.

Holy shit that ending took me by surprise. I remember that blowing my mind back then too LMAO

EDIT: Damn. The dude who animated passed. Too bad. He had legit talent and I'd love to see what he could do with todays tech after making that masterpiece back then

Wow, you are old enough to remember the 360? Good job, grandpa. Despite all those factors, it still sold the least of any console that generation and that last place finish is the best Microsoft has ever done.

Then let me tell you something sales fanboys...

Because the 360 made the Playstation sales divided by 2 after the amazing PS1 and PS2.

Never in history of gaming a console hurted more Sony than the 360, it was the first time Sony getting crushed in the console market.

The Xbox 360 was clearly THE BEST console of that era.

Metroid Prime has aged better than Halo. It was always the better game.
I still don't think in 2021 that Metroid Prime has a better gameplay, better universe, better lore, better OST, better art style, better AI, better co-op, better matchmaking, better splitscreen... than Halo.

No.

Well I'd disagree on several of your points. Gameplay, lore and art style are better in MP. And as Gameplay > the rest, MP wins.

I agree with you with OST, AI and of course anything multiplayer.

I'd give Prime all of thoses except co-op, splitscreen and matchmaking, since it doesn't have multiplayer. Maybe AI could go to halo? But I seem to remember commander Keyes used in front of my line of fire to get shot while I was rescuing him, which is pretty bad AI

You clearly look more mature with your arguments.

Very useful for the topic indeed.
I’ve at least weighed the two games against one another and had to reconsider my stance on Halo regarding several things(especially AI, I completely forgot how awesome it was to see enemies realize you stuck a plasma grenade on them. They also flanked you in a way no other game had done at the time.) it did better not only than Metroid Prime, but better than most game at the time.

You on the other hand haven’t even made one single comment on anything Metroid Prime other than stating its inferior to Halo, one could almost think you haven’t even played the game.

So to get back on topic:

My favorite missions in Halo CE was the silent cartographer and truth and reconciliation, but the library was not very good. The end chapter was also pretty badass, I remember everyone saying there was this secret ending that showed Master Chiefs face but back then it was more like an urban legend among my friends.

What are your favorite/least favorite areas of Metroid Prime?

Edit: Just realized Halo CE was the first game I played that had an actual melee attack that was completely independent of what weapon you were using. That is also one big achievement, couldn’t go without it today in any FPS today. Underrated feature.

I mean, what did it influence/impact? The two weapon limitation is the only thing I can think of that has been carried over to other games.

Edit: I guess rechargeable health too, and dudes with helmets.
You seem to forget the most important element Halo introduced into console gaming: aim assist.

Serious answer time: CE's influence can't be denied. It standardized a control scheme for the genre that almost everyone still uses. It also had some of the best enemy AI outside of FEAR and really, most games released today don't hold a candle in that regard. The massive campaign maps were impressive and not really seen outside of games like Delta Force. Sadly, from a single player perspective, it's the pinnacle of the series. Halo 3 has some equal highs, but much lower lows. Reach was pretty good too but nothing can live up to the greatness of CE.

The best by a long shot, the PS3 was trash and the Wii was a joke.

Best controller, best hardware, best dashboard, best online, best features...

Xbox 360 was THE BEST you know ?

I thought the Wii was trash and the PS3 was forgotten? Make up your mind, Chris Chan.

I was. I had an Xbox and Halo by mid 2002. Also had Metroid Prime the day it came out. Also had a PC so had exposure to games like CS.

Not sure which point you're disagreeing with.

The PS3 was trash and forgotten, and the Wii was trash and a joke, if you prefer like that.

Who cared of the PS3 at the 360 era ? 🤣

The Wii was just a Nintendo trap/bait that worked too well unfortunately.

They didn't care, they were just IPhone mentality.

PS3 felt like old gen, everything was better on 360...

They are both great.
I like the single player better in Metroid. But Halo also has multiplayer and it was (and still is, if you can get a group of friends together) and absolute blast.

If I had to choose I guess I'd still go with Metroid. Mainly because IMO there are better Halo games than Combat Evolved, but Prime 1 is still the best Metroid (IMO).

Another "let's see how much GAF hates Halo" threads. There's been a daily Halo comparison around here this week.

Both are in my top 5 favorite gaming franchises.
but Prime was never good - not even on day one. I never liked it.
Metroid is a 2D series and Prime's butt ugly western style comes no where close to the 2D games its trying to emulate.

Ive been playing Halo's mp and co-op on a regular basis for 20 years now - its timeless.
Metroid's 2D games are no doubt legendary - but the Primes are some of the most overated titles in gaming history.
As an FPS game comparison, its no contest Halo.

I really need to play one of the Halo games sometime to see what it's all about. Is the first one the most recommended for newcomers?

Really loved Metroid Prime. But I don't want to be unfair and call a game better when I've never even played the other one. Halo does look cool. What is the best one to dive into?

Luckily I am slightly tipsy and in the mood to try out new games.

Same, and i didn't find Metroid Prime memorable.

I didn't finished it, all i remember about this game is the landing or the AI ennemies that attacked me for no reason in that futuristic place.

Overrated.

Nothing happens in this game, it's dead and bland, and lonely everywhere.

Halo has the most plain and boring feeling gunplay of all the popular casual FPS. It was weird to see none of the sequels improved it substantially when I got the anniversary, it's the same since CE. The multiplayer too is basically Quake 3 simplified but at least it has merit as being among the first such things for consoles (well, sans Quake 3 and similar ports on DC, but its controller left a lot to be desired at the time). Not that Metroid Prime's gunplay is any better but at least it focuses on the compelling action adventure and exploration part much more than just pew pew shooting which is why they're not really comparable on any level. When I first saw Halo 4 I got such Prime vibes, I thought they're going all in on providing a compelling adventure campaign like a next gen Metroid Prime with the way that looked early on, but in the end it I guess they didn't really commit and go through with it, it was business as usual and not even at its best already average form. Meh all around.
