I know people love games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and Pokémon, but to me they can also be considered overrated..

Well... maybe, I'm stating the obvious but I'm sure there would be a lot of people that just think I'm trying to ''bash'' these games, in which I'm not, but I think there's something wrong when people call these games, ''one of the best rpgs of all time''. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate these games, but I just think it's sad when truly memorable games like Chrono Cross , Oblivion/Morrowind, Tales of Symphonia, Vagrant Story, Shadow Hearts, Baten Kaitos and Legend of Mana are not even considered as high on the totem pole as Chrono Trigger, Pokémon, or FF7 from what I've seen on these forums at least...

I liked Pokémon and FF7, but I never really got into Chrono Trigger - it just seems too old school and like the kind of game that probably isn't that great until later on... Pokémon is and has always been fun to play but they get dull after awhile, maybe you could say that about any game but it would still be nice to see them change Pokémon up a little... Then there's FF7. I really liked FF7, but does it really deserve to be considered one of the best rpgs of all time either? I've heard people that think so... I really don't think CT, FF7, or Pokémon deserve to have that title... (I know there are more but they escape me atm...)

Skyrim was impressive for its time due to its sheer scale, however, the combat and progression is shit and I feel sorry for anyone who doesnt play with mods.

Pokemon has one of the most boring turn based combat systems I ever witnessed and the new games are ugly as fuck.

Skyrim boring as fuck.
Ff7 amazing
Ff7 remake is overrated shit
Almost with you but depends on what you mean with overrated shit.

The battle system is enjoyable in normal mode and genuinely great in hard mode, the story to me was great (didn't want a repeat of the classic given I have ran through that game so many times) and some of the side quests was fun (alot was boring fetch quests)

Pokemon is boring as well but I can see how people get into the multiplayer element.

Pokemon or Skyrim for sure. I really enjoy both games, although I haven't played a Pokemon game since the original DS, I don't think they are as good as people make them out to be.

I only truly really like Skyrim because of the mod support. I would be done with it if I couldn't have any.

So there's at least one other person in here that has good taste; the Mass Effect games were overrated, derivative, buggy messes and didn't deserve the praise they got.

So Zelda is an RPG again? Okay lol
Your character levels up by getting more items and more powers like in a traditional RPG and you take the role of Link so I think that Zelda is an RPG.

Plus, can you deny that Zelda II doesn't have strong RPG elements?
Nothing on that list,

All falcom games are severely over rated.
Are you specifically talking about the Ys series?

y’s and legends of hero’s are the current ones, really it’s most of their games.

Only one I can think of that I loved was tomb and treasures. Also loved faxanadu but that was made by Hudson.

I've tried playing the Mass Effect series on like four separate occasions and just don't seem to be able to play for more than two sessions. I've thought about it, and honestly, it might be the gameplay for me. It just doesn't feel that great, pretty boring cover-based shooting. I think a lot of people give the series more leeway because of the story, but that just wasn't "grabbing" me either, but I think mostly the lackluster gameplay is the reason I just can't get into it.

I voted Lunar and Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 is impressive in its writing, choice/consequences and sidequest. But overall nothing special to me. Combat is a bit below average.

I played Lunar Silver Star Harmony this year for the first time... Well, it's EXTREMELY classic. Average characters, average music, average story, below average combat system.
I enjoyed the experience because I was playing a "classic" but really nothing special to see. I felt like it was a good game to introduce JRPG genre to kids.

Wanted to put Pokemon also but it's really a long time since I played one so I refrained.

Also maybe Skyrim but I dropped it after few hours (FPS melee combat should be forbidden)

-Xenoblade chronicles
The only Xenoblade game I found a little bit off-putting was Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I don't think it's a bad game necessarily, but it had some issues. My character never felt quite like the world was reacting to me personally, and the characters outside a couple were just barely explored and there was little-to-no change made by your interactions with the cast. In a way it was like it was combining an open-world Western RPG with a JRPG, but we got the blank slate MC like a Western and the on-rails narrative of the JRPG and it left the whole thing feeling a bit hollow to me. You neither have the reactivity and change you might expect in a Western RPG nor the narrative that replaces that in a more guided RPG.

TES Games and 3D Fallout Games are pure shit. ( New Vegas excluded to some extend )
The first pokemon was a good start but thats all, they are basically doing the exact same game and "story" for over twenty years now.

Can't speak for some other games but I don't understand why people hate FF7 Remake.
Its was fine in my opinion.

No chance is Skyrim over rated :messenger_tears_of_joy: That game propelled the fantasy RPG genre in to the mainstream conscience, similar to how The Lord of the Rings did with cinema. Personally I find most JRPGs pretty crap mechanically (apart from Pokémon). I’ve tried to put serious hours in to Final Fantasy XIII and Ni No Kuni and they are just slog fests with weird as fuck stories and characters.

No Skyrim did not do that.

That happend before Skyrim was released.
It just made profit out of it because it was released at the right time.

Witcher 3! I mean was a good game but not eveb close to what the fans say. Horrible combat, boring world and npc aesthetics. It has a amazing story and character development but nothing more.

Witcher 3 might have good writing but I couldn't put up with the garbage gameplay for more than an hour.

FF7 I played back in the day but gave up before the end through boredom.

Skyrim is made out of jank.

Final Fantasy X

Tidus is just insufferable with his dumb whiny voice and comically exaggerated animations. His entire shtick is to loudly proclaim how ignorant and dumb he is so that others can dump info on him.

The rest of the cast isn’t much better. Bunch of irritating shounen anime tropes. I especially hate Yuna because she whispers all her lines, as if the writers could find no subtler way to portray “maiden on a mission of grave significance” trope.

The battle system sucks too. The entire thing is based around swapping in on whoever can hurt the enemy you’re fighting. There you go, there’s the entire strategy. So boring an

Easily Skyrim and the Witcher 3.

I love RPGs, and those two were probably the most boring games I've ever played.

And as an aside... Zelda is absolutely not an RPG.

North West, UK.
Witcher 3 is absolute Redditcore.

Earthbound is overly praised soulless garbage that has some mild zany things about it.

Final Fantasy VII I don't even have to explain.

Let me guess some Final Fantasy game did? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Skyrim had CoD bros buying in to it, and is the best selling individual RPG of all time (not franchise sales). Game had GTA levels of popularity in the UK.

No Final Fantasy Series is way to different for that.
Gothic, Witcher, Dungeon Siege, Fable, Dragon Age and probably many other games made people ask for a good medieval rpg.

And as I said , Skyrim then released in the right time with more attention because its been done by successfull and international studio. Those other "smaller" or "european" studios however were already quite successfull and influencing everything else. RPG Elements were already quite common in other genres by then.

GTA San Adreas had RPG Elements in 2004 btw.

So no as someone who has been playing games for nearly 30 years I don't think Skyrim made this mainstream all of a sudden.
It was and is just really sccessfull, for whatever reason. For me TES Games are very boring, and I haven't heard any praise from my friends either. Without mods Skyrim is mediocore at best.

Would be a more interesting thread if people would post their favorite rpg's and most overrated ones in their view.

So you think Gothic, Witcher, Dungeon Siege, Fable, Dragon Age were all more mainstream than Skyrim? Not bring rude but I’m assuming you’re confused about the definition of mainstream here.

I quote:

Skyrim profited from other games that already established the fantasy RPG Genre in the mainstream.

I wanna also add:
So you think Gothic, Witcher, Dungeon Siege, Fable, Dragon Age were all more mainstream than Skyrim? Not bring rude but I’m assuming you’re confused about the definition of mainstream here.
No those games all had some kind of flavour. Which Skyrim is lacking.

In that sense yes Skyrim is more mainstream then those other games.
Its nothing special.

Both Skyrim and Pokemon, but my choice is Pokemon.

Theres nothing remarkable or surprising in there. Its just a simplistic type of RPG that offers nothing but the pokemons(brand) themselves. Used to have great stories, but nowadays is a dumbfied experience.

Lunar Silver Star was released for the Mega-CD in 1992. Try to put that into context. It was spectacular.
Definitely. Should have mentioned that. I thought about while playing.

But still there are some others old games I experienced for the first time on the late that left a great impact on me.
Final Fantasy VI (played in 2019) and VII (played around 2010) come to mind.
Both have some outdated aspect but characters, story, and setting are quite memorable. Also their battle system have some interesting aspect.

In the case on Lunar, it doesn't work anymore for me. But sure back in the day must have been awesome
