Valve Prohibits the Mention of "non-Steam versions" of Games

Valve has recently updated it's Steam Community Hub policies to prohibit the mentioning of non-Steam versions of games, this likely comes as competition increases in the largely stagnant PC gaming market from the likes of the Epic Games Store, and Xbox Game Pass for PC. This will mean that the Steam Community Hub will no longer include mentions to releases on other platforms. These new rules apply to both releases and DLC effectively stopping the promotion of other platforms on Steam.

In the game you ship via Steam, and in communications on Steam, you may only promote the Steam version and its availability via Steam, and not other distribution outlets. This applies both to full versions of your game and to content patches that change the existing version.

Undoubtedly, Valve has heard about the insufferable condition of users that are being forced to install other game store launchers and is trying to relieve the pain by crushing competitors, in the name of, and for the well being of, gamers.

Eh, makes sense.

If I ran a corner shop I wouldn't want bread manufacturers printing "get the same bread cheaper next door!" on the packaging. People will do their own research.

sounds anti-competitive to me

all these little walled gardens need legislating by young intelligent new politicians already

Steam isn't a walled garden, even porn games are allowed there and other stores directly competing with Steam. What's anti-competitive is Epic buying exclusives and then telling the devs to advertise them on their fucking steam page which is why this rule was created.

I wonder if you can mention uncensor patches on Steam?
That's made specifically against uncensor patches:

"In the game you ship via Steam, and in communications on Steam, you may only promote the Steam version and its availability via Steam, and not other distribution outlets. This applies both to full versions of your game and to content patches that change the existing version. "

I don't see a problem with this? On the steam page for your game they don't want you telling people to go buy it somewhere else because they'll get more money. Are people really going to get angry about that?

Wow steam is so bad.
Epic gives us free games every week. And fights big bad apple. If epic would sell tshirts i would support them. But for now i will just spend all my moms income on V-BUCKS.

Steam is bad for protecting its own business?

Epic gives you free shit because they are a giant company as well. Let's not pretend Epic is still some small time, good guy, good time company.

Epic sell loads of fortnite merch, go buy some puppet.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I can see where the concern arises - Steam's forums double as tech support for the GOG and Epic versions of the games. Why would they want to benefit people who don't buy from their platform?

I mean, it's a little petty, but I get it.

Valve brings in billions with Steam every year, EGS brought in $125 million in a year lol....

Epic is not a threat, they're a platform holder people abuse for free games and spend no money on.

Every competitor is a threat. If there is no Xbox/nintendo, you would expect PS4 to sell like 150-200 million already. The same talk about AMD and Nvidia and now AMD is selling more GPU's.

Steam fanboys are pretty extreme indeed, but things could change.

Fortunately there is nothing worse than a Sony fanboy

I hope this does not include the discussion of EGS exclusives on the discussion forum of the game listed as coming soon on steam. If store page is up on steam then discussion of the game should be allowed. I guess this prohibition is only on the community hub which is fair.
