After listening to the 1upshow on train ride over to buy this, I decided to start on heroic.

It's hard.

Yes, I die fairly often and I'm an experienced Halo campaign player.

Still, it's worth it for the intensity of the firefights and improved AI.

It is. I died a lot but it was almost never frustrating. I read a quote somewhere that basically says fights are almost like a puzzle, with a lot of wrong ways but not one right way.

You can view your last 15 - 20 or so games played.

You can? Wow! Never saw an option for that, guess I didn't look around well enough.

It is. Normal is a fine difficulty level for FPS casuals. It's quite easy at first, but gets tough during the last few levels.

Aaah fuck! my new uni room seems to have the worse internet connection plan humanly available. £20 for 8gig cap and a 2meg line thats shared between a fair few people in one go. And then theres xbox live that will connect but totaly refuse to play any type of game just like old shitty routers do.

Well i'm boned then, bye bye xbox live for 2 years :/

This may have been mentioned, but unfortunately I can't search for words with only 3 characters...but did anyone notice that you can't have "N64" as your online shortcut handle?

:(
By the way, I think you can search for a 3 character word, you have to add in a '*' though; like n64* or something

An observation that I would love Bungie to comment on:

Why is the game in 640p? Nah just kidding.

At the start of level 8 "Cortana" the background is quite clearly a static 2D image... whats the deal? It looks really odd and its unprecedented in the Halo series - especially Halo 3.

If you want a quick solution, plug your 360 directly into your modem

My modem is my router.

I've tried opening those ports I've seen on other sites, but it sits at Moderate for some reason.

Did you open these ports?

•UDP 88
•UDP 3074
•TCP 3074

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874

try opening UPnP, not sure but it might help, then reset your router and try testing again.

another thing to try is to disable your router's firewall.

just finished for the first time on normal, really enjoyed it even the flood bits were good imo, and thats saying alot coming from me who cant stand the flood at all from the last 2 games.

ending was decent enough also, be interesting to see what direction they take with the 4th.

Ive not touched the MP at all yet, I will hopefully have some time tomorrow.

heroic is the only way to go for all three halo games, especially on the 1st run through. I think that gives you the best single player experience and really immerses you in it. legendary with friend through co-op should be a blast.

I finished campaign last night on heroic. I didn't have many of the problems i was reading about in this thread, very few framerate problems, no excessive jaggies and no slowdown in the final cutscene.

What i did have was sound problems, specifically the music, it cut in and out a lot and often didn't play at all during the levels. I lost track of this thread after i stopped reading it when my copy arrived so i have no idea if anyone else has had this.

I don't have a 5.1 sound system and played it through the speakers on my HDTV, not ideal i know. Is this the problem? Anyone else in the same boat?

I had the sound cutting in and out when i watch the cutscenes, the ones on the main menu.

but no sound issue in game.

using 5.1 optical setup here.

Am I correct in thinking that to get quite a few of the multiplayer achievements, that when it says 'free for all ranked match', it means Lone Wolves?

Because I got 8 melees in a Team Slayer match and didn't get my toast.

sadly yes, only available when you are on your own vs everyone.

Well, I finished the fight last night and after Level 8 I was kind of happy for it all to be over, to be quite honest.

It just fatigued the shit out of me and I can't see myself ever going through all that again. It was just miserable. The best level was leve 6, in my mind. It was just insanely fun and well designed. Marty's music building in the background pumped me up like few other games ever have. Love that new military theme. Is it a remix? I think I actually let out a "waa-hoo" midway through. My biggest gripe with the story is that it
never effectively conveys the galaxy-ending threat that the Covenant represent. There is a lot of talk about how dire things are but you never really see it. In fact, the diroamas did a much better job of portraying the hurt, pain and consequences of war. I wish Chief's relationship with the Arbiter was more fully developed as well.

The 1st and 2nd Scarab set pieces are awesomely designed but way too easy (I played on Heroic). But really, did we have to fight them 3 times? I would have preferred they made a new enemy just for the third game or something (for variety's sake).
I personally can't see myself completing the campaign on Legendary, not when I know what's in store for me in that 8th level.

I am really looking forward to digging into the multiplayer this weeked, though. All in all I thought it was a game of peaks and valleys - absolutely brilliantly fun moments and encounters but entirely forgettable and frustrating ones as well.

I'm done.

Wow. Excellent game, excellent last level, excellent ending. I'm very happy.

Today: My first multiplayer match.

the idea of medals is so well done that i keep coming back to multiplayer, its brainless gaming, but brainless gaming at its finest!!

Concerning level 8

I didn't find it to be overly frustrating on Heroic (singleplayer), although I will say that it was my least favorite level in the game. The worst part were the damn snipers. They wouldn't be such a pain in the ass if they didn't take a shit ton of shots to kill. I don't even think the Carbine does ANYTHING to them. "Sniper" units should be weak, otherwise they are just far, far too annoying.
They're tough to take down, which makes the level much more strategic. You need to be careful with your movements and weapon choices.

Fuck, I hate the IWHBYD Skull. I've been jumping through hoops for the last hour and still can't get it to spawn the skill. I've played the level from start.

Weird, I didn't get it on my first try so I saved/quit and restarted from my last checkpoint and got it.

We got it first try.. *shrugs* Just make sure you've done everything in the room and walked all the way back to the front as you're leaving and get the flashy screen cutsceen that seems to play every 20 minutes from the girl. Then turn around and go jump through some hooooops.

Also, make sure you are COMPLETLEY clearing the rings. The trigger points seem very finicky. And keep the skull in you hand until all the rings stay lit.

Huh?
What do you mean with completely clearing?

I've tried again, and again it didn't work.

I didn't get that, I'll try again...

Just finished the game (not me playing of course, but watched it all the way), took 8 hours for a very good player with all the retries in Heroic.
Besides the aliasing I don't have much bad stuff to say about the game, Bungie really did a great job. Some of the scenary was simply stunning, and the scope of some of the levels was rather impressive.
Lighting (you know how much of a lighting whore I am) was simply awesome.

Something is very, very wrong with the EXP right now. I've won my last three matches, only got 1 exp for it, then I just got that experience point ERASED in a match I didn't even quit. I should already have my next rank yet I'm now further behind than when I started an hour and a half ago. STUPID.

It's not. It's what we call a Matte painting. It is moving, but slowing, and, I'm not sure, but I think the camera is slowly panning.

That's the point.

Got to mission
6? After going through the portal and visiting the Cartographer, and took a break where you start your new mission with a spartan laser.

So I take back a little of what I said about the Arbiter being useless. He had lots of functionality as a barrier for me in
the Flood mission
. Either that level was just extremely easy (Legendary has been pretty much a cakewalk compared to the
fucking DEATH GAUNTLET of Brutes in the middle of the 2nd mission
) or they turned the Arbiter's health WAY up because
the Flood just queued up on him and I was easily able to swipe away with the sword or open up with flamethrower or Shotgun. I swear the poor bastard was on fire for half of the level. :lol
.

I have one question though, and those of you who've read Ghosts of Onyx and/or beaten the game will probably be able to answer. All I want to know is if
the bowl-shaped world you are on (after going through the portal created by the Ark) is the same world that Dr. Halsey and the other Spartans teleported to from the Shield World. Even better if Halo 3 has a reunion with the remaining Spartans (or if the whole "Master Chief is the last Spartan" is the true canon and the books aren't recognized?)
.
