i dont get some of you achievement whores. the way i see it, i plan on playing this game for another 2 to 3 years and throughout that time i'm bound to get all of these achievement somehow. even if by accident, i'll get em. what the hells the rush to get achievements?

in order to get armor perms, you NEED the achievements

13 armor pieces are linked to achievements

SEVEN of them are the heads (Scout, Mark V, ODST, Rogue, and Security for Spartan; Ascetic and Commando for Elite)

Really? Just looking at my kill distribution on my stats page, the starting weapons (assault rifle, assault melee, and frag grenades) account for probably 9/10 of my kills. :lol I understand that they will likely account for most, but I almost feel that, in their effort to give spawning players a fighting chance, Bungie has removed too much of the incentive to pursue other weapons.

how so? AR sucks, grenades can't kill for shit and you can't rely on melee... if anything you are FORCED to get a better weapon

A couple of random thoughts now that I've finished the Campaign, and slept on it.

First, the stuff I didn't like. There was some.

--Hunters were criminally under-used. The few times I fought them they were formidable, so I with they were in there more. I think there was even Hunter Flood - once.

--Bungie still couldn't find a way to make Drones interesting to fight, though the giant swarms that came out were pretty cool. Taking on a small, rapidly moving airborne target isn't really feasible, so they usually just landed on a surface to be killed eventually. Fighting them was still annoying, not fun, which is why they probably only showed up about four times.

--Why do Wraiths blow up when I punch the driver to death? I did one or two smacks too many a few times and blew the whole thing up - something that takes more than half a dozen Fuel Rod shots to do (from the front or side).

--I wish the Arbiter would go down in battle and then stay down the rest of that fight. It felt a little cheap to have him constantly springing back up, knowing I had an invincible AI buddy to rely on.

--There are minor AA issues, but I literally noticed this like, twice. That's the last complaint about the graphics I have - the game is utterly gorgeous.

--There were a couple of bad lines of dialog. I never cringed anywhere in the first two games - the writing was solid. Here I think the writing is the best in the series, but two lines made me wince. The first was at the start of the second level, when Keyes is laying out what will happen if the rings fire. The Chief chimes in with, "The rings will kill us all." Since Keyes had just said that, the timing and delivery made it redundant and jarring. Late on in the game, Keyes repeats the exact same lines over the radio - as if we'd forgotten what would happen. I know they're trying to establish the stakes, but we knew them already. I harp on these because the rest of the game is incredibly well-written and they stood out. Also, I'm nit-picking for negatives.

--I wanted to see Gravemind in Halo 3, not just hear him. So much of this game looks like the conceptual artwork, I wanted to see him because his concept at was pretty amazing, and his Halo 2 implementation was not.

--Snipers were more fair in this game, but they were introduced in giant clutter that was annoying in Sierra 117 that irked me initially.

--The final run was wonderful in concept: a throwback to the end of the first game, but - as appropriate to Halo 3 - on a much bigger scale. However, having the floor blow out from under me was not fun, and it happened far too many times. Towards the end of the run it turned into trial and error rather than judgment and skill, a first for the series.

That's about all the complaints I got. On to the good stuff.

--Um, everything else? To be more specific -

--I need to listen to the soundtrack (hint hint), but I think this was Marty's best work. The scores from Halo 1 and 2 got together and had genetically engineered super-babies. My favorite track in the Halo series is Brothers in Arms, so when the opening strains of that started churning in The Storm I was ecstatic. The scary music was terrifying, the action music rousing and, much like Halo 2, a strong emotionally current runs through it. Brilliant, diverse and well-implemented stuff.

--There are many memorable battles in Halo 1 - sniping in T&R, landing on the beach in Cartographer, the ending siege of Two Betrayals - but not so many in Halo 2. It was a consistent game, but not punctuated by epic encounters. Not so in Halo 3; I mean, holy shit, where to begin!? The ending of mission one, the Brute pack in the barracks of mission 2, like, all of Tsavo Highway and the Storm. The epic vehicle battles in missions six and seven - holy fucking shit. It's Halo on a grand and beautiful scale, and it's exactly what I always wanted from the series.

--The varied mission objectives. In Halo 1, there were a couple of goals that didn't involve just getting to the goal - short out the conduits, blow up the engine room, escaping. In Halo 2 there was one - cutting the tether to the gas mine. Halo 3 really mixed it up, even if some of the goals really were just big battles. The Scarab fights, the ending escape, taking out AA tanks and guns - it felt like I had a series of objectives that didn't all end with "get to the end" and that helped me stay engaged.

--The story. It didn't play out the way I expected it to, on nearly every level. Some were minor, like having to go back and re-arm the bomb in mission 2. Others, like the third shield generator tower not going down and fighting alongside the Flood floored me. Keye's death, fighting Guilty Spark, the arrival of two Scarabs - all good stuff. Overall I left happy, feeling not just that I played a good game, but that a good story was told. I'm happy.

That's enough for now. I could go on about how I like the amount of wreckage that piles up during combat, or all the stuff I could blow up that's just scattered around, or gush about the lighting, combat dialog, encounter structure, HUD and UI, enemy AI, equipment balance, the sound design....but I won't. The Campaign was beautiful, epic in scope and rousing. Now I need to finish it on Legendary, solo. Then dive into co-op, maybe track down the skulls and terminals I missed. Eventually I'll get to MP and Forge, somehow. (Oh, and I've got two disks of extras to watch now, as well.) I think this game is going to keep me busy for a long time. Bungie has put together a huge, polished and lovely game. It didn't feel compromised at all, as Halo 1 and 2 were. It feels like it's finished.

To get the Legendary achievement, can you do this in co-op? I'm guessing not...since 4p co-op lengedary with formidable alies would be rather easy.

I've heard you can do it on co-op.

Of course, it's always good to do on your own and be proud of it achievement-less.

most of my kills come from AR + grenade + melee, but that's because most of the time, everyone else has those weapons too.

AR + Frags vs AR + Frags is perfect. But when it's AR + Frags vs Dual wielding, I feel like the Dual-Wielder definitely has the advantage.

And I think the Brute machine gun (spiker?) is pretty overpowered.

I agree with everything you said apart from this said. I didnt think it was random at all....
I didnt once get owned from driving over a piece as it drops away. I found I could easily negotiate my way through the dodgy looking pieces and essentially it down come down to skill.

Is anybody else getting "Information could not be retrieved from the Halo 3 server" at Matchmaking? I can't get in.

I was just about to ask the same thing, I got into 2 games, but I will randomly get the same message.

It's not. It's what we call a Matte painting. It is moving, but slowing, and, I'm not sure, but I think the camera is slowly panning.

That's the point.

Whats the point? It was obviously a 2D image and it looked ridiculous. Like flying into a painting in a horror movie or something.

Finally finished my Helm's Deep variant, (I created both a specific map and gametype for it) as posted in GDJustin's excellent thread. Let me know what you guys think if you actually try it out. Seeing as I haven't managed to get 16 people to together to play it; I don't really know if it works or not.

I want to try this!

gamertag is Twin Twi5t

I got mine in co-op. But when you're on the level select screen, it shows what skill level you've beaten it on for solo and co-op. So you can get the achievement co-op, but you'll eventually need to beat it solo if you're a completionist like myself (when it comes to all things Halo, that is).

It happened to me a couple of times totday that matchmaking wouldn't work. Bungie get your shit together. :lol

Yep Im the same. Got both the Heroic and Legendary achievements by doing a combo of single and co-op, however those medals demand that I finish every level in both single and co-op too.

Beat it on heroic last night:

First six levels were GREAT, the last three I didn't really enjoy much. Last segment wasn't as good as Halo 1's last segment, and wish they did something different for that. Having played through the previous Halo's the story never interested me, and Halo 3 didn't change that unfortunately. It never really grabed or intrigued me, and the flashing bits with cortana were terrible. Love the dialouge you hear throughout the game from both marines and convenent, lots of great quotes and made the experience all the better. Overall it has its flaws, but I enjoyed the SP and will play through it again foir skull/terminals and just for the fun of it

Save a film. Take a screenshot in it. Save it to your gallery and File Share.

Go to your gallery on Bnet. Click on it.

Frankie I posted this a few pages back:

An observation that I would love Bungie to comment on:

Why is the game in 640p? Nah just kidding.

At the start of level 8 "Cortana" the background is quite clearly a static 2D image... whats the deal? It looks really odd and its unprecedented in the Halo series - especially Halo 3.

Would love to hear your take on it if you feel like answering...

Cheers.

Is the matchmaking server down or something. All of a sudden I get "Information could not be retrieved from the Halo3 server." even though I'm online.

There were several times when the arrow was pointing straight, and I'd go over a jump right on top of the arrow - and the floor would blow out while I was in the air. Also, I'm a crappy driver. I'll have to make Frank drive next time. :p

Got my levels mixed up I think,
7 I had no problems with, but 8 and 9 for sure it felt there was a huge drop off in quality and fun comapred to the other levels. There were defidentely segments within thoselevels I enjoyed, but those 2 levels as whole, meh. Which level was it agai nwhere you're fighting 2 scarabs with the hornet? THAT was awesome. Level 7?

I'm playing on Heroic right now, and while it's not "hard" its really a fuckin challenge though. I haven't died once where I thought the game was cheap, it was just me being stupid and stickin my head out too long when surrouned by enemies. Really lovin the A.I. so far, I'm always on my toes wonderin where they are going.

Ahh yeah I think following that arrow too closely may have been a bit treacherous.

So Ghaleon, when are you going to tell the story behind your admin position at HBO? I'm assuming it happened due to That Night with Louis Wu?

I haven't had too much time to play during the week, just some multiplayer and the first campaign level on Heroic solo and Legendary 2p co-op, but I'm loving every minute of it so far. Anybody up for a four person Legendary run today?

? lol

Sounds sexy. Intriguingly sexy *shudders*

So despite being told that the ad agency had no access to the fiction of the game, who else was
disappointed that we didnt end up on earth for one last epic battle? I was for a while... I even resigned myself to the fact the Chief will die, but was so looking forward to the battle that I was at peace with it.

Later on though after seeing the final cutscene after the credits and feeling all warm and fuzzy - and subsequently playing the final level again and seeing how gorgeous it looked I got over not having the final battle on Earth.

Still, would have been great:D

Just finished The Road and the visuals and the gameplay have impressed the hell out of me. This is certainly more Halo 1 than it is Halo 2. I've been playing on Heroic and the only thing that I can say has been dissapointing is that certain enemies are completely oblivious to you until you start firing at them. I guess there is some kind of AI range or something for performance reasons.

99% of the game has been completely smooth for me too. 30fps most of the time. The only time I can't tell for sure if there is a dip is when stuff is exploding right in my face.

Wait a minute.

Nope im playing now works fine.

Just out of curiosity, is there any chance of seeing a patch address the mild performance issues in the future? The game is a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned, and I find it disappointing that such a masterpiece would have small chinks in its armor.

Even your tag has a frame drop.

Anyone have moderate NAT since playing Halo 3? It was open all last week and once Halo 3 and the xbox live issues it went to moderate. I've opened all my ports and fixed the dmz and still, moderate. Anyone else with this issue?

Make Sure if you do that you start on Arrival. We had that problem. Really freaked us out.

We just went back and replayed the cutscene and got the achievement.
