You force someone to drive in a tournament worth $$$ and give them the option to drive a car with Manual or Automatic Transmission. Now consider they've only driven with autoamtic their whole life, WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY WANT TO PICK UP THE STICK SHIFT???

If Bungie created Halo3 with the BR as your starting weapon and not the AR, no one would fucking notice a difference. I said it.

Neutral Flag sucked hard in Halo 2. Capping the flag required control of the middle and once one team had that established they could easily run the flag to their base with ease and keep the middle, ready to pick up the flag the instant it was captured. Games would go from 0-0 to 0-5 very quickly.

anyway, back from my self-imposed exile

locked myself in a cold dark room (the Crypt) for 2 weeks and emerged with my first symmetrical, objective, competitive map, loosely based on a Halo 2 campaign environment

no one has seen this yet and i want HaloGAF to play it first since you guys inspired to get my head out of the Grifball court and build a "shooty/stabby" map - i am in the process of re-designing the bases and dropping in a metric tonne of BR's so it might not be ready for tonight's customs - it will be ready for sure next week

One of the tweaked maps I made, in case we get a big group that wants to try something other than Sandbox.

My take on Avalanche Heavies. Because GAF loves Heavies and Avalanche so much. :p

Vehicle setup:

Two Mongoose, Prowler, Warthog, Wraith, Hornet. A bit heavier than the default, but nothing that can dominate like the Scorpion, thus reducing the need for tons of power weapons to take them down.

I've moved the regen over to where the overshields were in default, and put the power drain inside the base. That way if a team is pinned down in the base they have something to toss out at the vehicles, and regens can mix up firefights on opposite sides of the keyhole. Swapped the frags in the base for plasmas as well.

By the side lifts:

A few things here. First, I wanted to spread the vehicles out a bit, partly so if one team is really pinned down they have a plan B available, but nothing that can support a passenger for CTF. It will also make the opening rush play a bit different.

Spawns have been moved from out in the open to into cover. None are visible from the keyhole sniper perch/spawn.

Last, I moved the rockets out a little, so it takes a few extra seconds to get over to them. This way the first guy over the man cannon won't necessarily be the guy with rockets.


Center:

I wanted to provide motivation to use parts of the map that are normally ingnored. This way at least the opening rush spreads out a bit - some for where the laser was, some for camo, some for the toy in the center. That way there's more to fight over, but nothing overpowering. Swapped bubble shields by camo for trip mines, which never get enough love. Four bubbles are too many on one map, IMO, especially all out in the center.


Center:

Added a fuel rod gun way out in the center. I picture a pair of guys rushing camo then the FRG. Blowing the fusion core near the opposite side knocks the FRG toward you.

Laser has been replaced with a missile pod. There are no lasers on the map.
 
Still so long until customs start. Hopefully this week they won't fall apart and turn into a collection of small MM parties. There definitely needs to be more conversing. :P

Oh, and Ghaleon, how 'bout Snowbound for your next tweak? I like what you've done with Avalanche and I think, with vehicles, Snowbound might be bearable.

I don't think I've ever fired a missile pod at a hornet. Ever. I haven't played any custom variants on Avalanche. It would be interesting to see just how changed the gameplay is with those tweaks. Looks good.

Considering 90% of HaloGAF have horrible connections, I think having smaller custom groups is more viable, tolerable, and less frustrating than 16 of us stuck in one room.

True, the games tend to play nicely at 10-12 players. Last week 'I' caused a fair bit of lag for a while. I say 'I' because it was the other twats in my flat running some torrents when I specifically said "GAF customs - No internets for you".
I think it's fair considering that they torrent 24/7, GAF customs are like 5-6 hours of an entire week and that I pay for the internet.

This week I've just blocked the other computers in the flat from accessing the router. It can be happy fun time. :)
 
People get cranky after too much of Sandbox's boring sandy scenery on work-in-progress maps and everyone starts finding excuses to leave. We should mix it up tonight with the beautiful visuals of Valhalla and Avalanche.

Haha I used to do this. I'd tolerate it most of the time, but if I was playing Halo with friends I'd plug the modem directly into my 360 instead of the router.

Until the vehicles are nerfed a bit the laser should stay. How the Hornet in its current state got put into matchmaking I will never know.

I don't have anything against the laser per se, but I like that the missile pod gives the targeted vehicle a chance to dodge. It's not a guaranteed kill - the range and angle you take on the target matter. With the laser the pilot can be doing nothing wrong and get toasted instantly from the other side of the map.

On Valhalla, I kind of like it because you can't dominate the entire map with it - a team effort can take it down and/or distract it easily.

On Avalanche, it effectively cuts off half the map from your vehicles until it's been spent. The very long open spaces and the necessity of bringing vehicles around the bend means you can control the map with it. And since Avalanche was made to be a vehicular playground, I don't think it's well suited to it.
