Holy balls, that jump vid brings back way too much nostalgia. We need another Halo 2 night. Please.

Although the BR/AR thing was been argued 20+ times now, Willeth has an odd perspective. Spawning with an AR means you will lose any sort of long-mid range fight off the spawn. On maps like Guardian where there is only one BR and one Carbine, spawning with an AR is rediculous. It's not as much as a problem on a map like The Pit, where the BR is plentiful.

But seriously, BR/AR starts. Everyone will be happy. BR gets beat by sniper, AR gets beat by shotgun. There we go, we still got our power weapons. Problem solved.

But onto a more serious argument: Who shot first, Han or Greedo?

Neither, Greedo is seen later on in another scene in the background.

Picture time :)

We spent most of two games pimpin' the ghost and we still won them. ^.^
You'd think it would have been really ineffective but we scored a few double kills standing on those wings.

Pet (driving), Penguin and myself. (and vhfive in one picture) This is how GAF rolls.

Playing with those guys is always so much fun; the random antics we get up to and still manage to pull off the win, glorious.

Also... I felt like betraying someone at the end of the game. I charged in on my trusty mongoose, evil in my eyes, screeching "NOOOOO!!!"

Yeah, because we are that damn good.

We ran some pretty good games so far tonight, 23 for 25. (some are ties but whatever... they aren't losses and they show as wins on Bnet so I'm counting them :P)

I'm definitely up for some more in a bit if anyone else is.

These thoughts have been swirling around in my brain of late. The Arbiter was a criminally undeveloped character in the Halo canon. His role in Halo 2 was large and it laid the ground for further development. It would make sense, wouldn't it? His perspective formed a large part of Halo 2, and it revealed important aspects of the workings of the Covenant. Instead, in Halo 3, the support character focus bafflingly went to Miranda and Johnson. Not bad characters by any means, but seriously too shallow and undeveloped to have pulled off what Bungie was trying for in Halo 3. They're more or less flat characters, their motivations and role are no more critical than the average marine. But the Arbiter isn't just quiet in the cutscenes, he hardly speaks in-game at all. It irritates me, because I know that this character has a thousand interesting pieces of information or background to dispense, but he's gagged. He goes into battle without so much as a howl or insults thrown at his Brute foes. He's just so much less in H3. Agree/disagree?

Also, on a tangent: Team Fortress 2 Recon has arrived.

Wow, Tashi... that really sucks. I don't understand how anyone can gain any form of satisfaction in defeating a team of players whom they have rendered helpless. I mean... wow... well done, you can kill people that can't fight back.

If you are that much of a scrub that you have to cheat in order to win then why play the game? Go play something easier... like tetris. I despise anyone who cheats. >.>

Good luck in trying to find some legitimate opponents, Tashi.

I have good news for you.

So in ODST Omegathon news, looks like there will be 12 people going into the round and 8 leaving.

I am therefore assuming that there will be three teams in Firefight, and the team (or four players) with the least points is knocked out.

Thought I'd post a few WIP pics of a map I've been tinkering with on and off for two weeks, and only in the past two days made any real progress. I get a kick out of seeing other people's work in progress stuff, so in case anyone else does as well, here goes. A cartographer's journal, of sorts.

The basic layout is simple, and based on three ideas. I wanted to split the basin of Sandbox lengthwise, rather than down the short way. I thought building a wall down the center, with bases on either side, and making the players go around left or right would result in a slightly different feel than most maps, where one base is on each end. This way players spawn close to each other, but have to spread the map to reach the other base.

The second idea was to make the wall transparent, so you could see through to the other base; opposing teams spawn staring each other down but not able to engage. I pictured some amusing moments of tension as teams ran along the either wall, visible and aware but not yet in combat. The barrier is constructed of slit walls, with shield doors embedded in the exact center. So you can look, but not shoot through.

Idea three was to have man cannons to catapult players over the wall and into the opposing base.

I started base construction, like this, and then realized the flaws:

Test1.jpg

In CTF, you want to take the fastest route between the bases. And with the center wall only splitting half the length of the map, there was no reason to use the for ends of the basin. And I couldn't come up with a motivation for players to head out there.

So, I abandoned the idea of having the bases so close, and moved them to opposite corners, and started tinkering on designs. I wanted to try and build an actual base this time - every map I've done has not really had a well made base. They're all variations of two very simple ideas: a u-shaped fort (Slingshot, Sandstorm, the entire map of Entrenched) or two flat, connected floors (Centrifugal, Elevation). Nothing that took any real thought to make. I always think of a central layout first, and the bases last, with budget and space constraints rearing their head at that stage.

So this time, I'm making the bases first, with the goal of doing something a bit different (for me).

I started up, and ran into two issues: first, geomerging in an epic pain in the ass. And second, I started to fall into the "top floor, bottom floor" trap again.

Test2.jpg

So I took it apart and started over. I settled on a design that links over from the central wall, and has a few tunnels through the lower level. There's four different ways into the base, on all sides, and an elevated flag spawn. Nothing revolutionary, but for a simpleton like me, it took a looooong time to make.

There's a bridge linking over from the center wall, onto a main platform. Under that is a vehicle bay, with a few ways into it. Up above is the flag.

Final3-1.jpg

On the other side, the Prowler spawns on top, the other Mongoose below in another (smaller) bay.

Final2-1.jpg

I'll tweak it some more after I build the other side and see what kind of budget is left for the center, for which I have two different possible designs in mind.

Long ways to go. But with the bases designed, I'm hoping to be done next week for ze customz. I have no idea if it will be any good.

WTF is this shit?

I redeemed my xbl code and it shows up as having an XBL membership on xbox.live.com but when I try to play halo I cant because it says it requires Xbox Live. What is this bullshit??? Help anyone?

Happened to me a while back too, just relax. It takes a little while sometimes.

Eh, so I'm putting my latest map on hiatus (the one in the skybubble with the wall surrounding the center). I've gotten too frustrated with it.

I'm working on something now that's more akin to Beaver Creek..... in the sky, of course.

this shit is going to make me rage. how can you show my status as having gold in my xbl account on my xbox and on the internet yet the fucking game wont let me play.

fuck microsoft.

What did they do exactly?
Serious question. I don't know much about this stuff.

They call it the "lag switch" They make everyone on the opposing team lag to a point where it doesn't appear that you're respawning but really you are. So, you don't even move and they just wreck you on spawn.

There are other forms of cheating but this seems to be the most popular.

Here is one of the cheater's games played list...http://www.bungie.net/stats/PlayerStatsHalo3.aspx?player=TEH%20NEEDLES

A couple days ago I was playing doubles and got matched against this one kid, I win, ten seconds later he invites me into a room and hes like hey you're from Buffalo NY right? Your ISP is Roadrunner right? and then hes like your IP is ......? and then he was like thats good I was just showing my friend how to do something. Next game I'm in red bar through the WHOLE game. Dude must have had bots and shit raping my connection. Truly a WTF moment.

I was just writing down my Halo:CE CD Key in a more convenient location, and I thought:

"I don't even remember where and what it was about that this was supposed to be useful."

Was it just my imagination that some news piece mentioned that the CD key would be used for something coming up in the future?

It was mentioned on the podcast.

Bah. I hope this isn't a problem with the code; it should have been a completely fine 1-month. :(

Did this ever work out?

...wut

49-49 Last kill wins. I say team sit back I'll handle this. It takes me from my base to their base on rats nest I finally see him enter his base from the outside ring. I know I'm walking forward and am close enough to beat down, he shoots and misses, my beatdown hits, of course the laid back host beating system he taps B in hopes of a beatdown. 50-50. Game over.

Fucking BS, I thought quicker and faster and executed more efficiently but the game rewards noobs.

Also first game I've ever tied 50-50! It was mad intense.:D

Nice.

Only 50-50 game I've seen was in multiteam, 3 teams (including mine) were on 49, so I felt that I could just sit back and get XP by tieing for 2nd. But noooo, the other 2 teams have to both get 50, meaning my team finishes 3rd on 49.

edit: found link, I'm playing on my brothers guest.

Now I have to get 51-Something. Rocket for a double at 49 or something.

God the game I played last night were brutal...must have went -30 or so over 7 or 8 games...did leave on a 2 or three game win streak with an extermination from a banshee on two separate hogs though which made me feel good (note I am terrible in the banshee...but getting better).

Han Solo, always and forever. I swear that half the theater shouted in protest when I saw the "special" edition. The other half were kids who didn't understand why daddy was screaming "fuck you, Lucas!"

Looks promising, Ghaleon. I really appreciate how you're trying to mix up the standard 2-base-with-something-sort-of-interesting-in-the-middle and try a different approach. Looking forward to playing on it. :D

It looks really good Ghaleon,

One question though... What is with the stack of Blocks over on the right hand side? Is that just a little stock pile so you can see how much budget you have left, or is that part of the map?

goatrope is coming over tonight hopefully, so we should try and get some games going on... Either customs or some more Double XP.

Now for a tale that shows that things are not always as bad as they seem... I start the game off 3v5 (I am, of course, on the team with three people).

PART 1 - I has Splaser
In the video he posted earlier in the thread, OWV showed you how to PLAY with the Spartan Laser. Here, I show you how to USE it.

Here comes the ownage!

4.

5.

No more "lazjuice." I am forced to scrounge around for other weapons. Oh, lookie here!

PART 2 - General Carnage

What happens next?

2q2jypt.jpg

I found a Battle Beetle and I own with it.

A few seconds later, three people rush at me all at once and I die. Trudging on, I find another victim.

2s7hpc9.jpg

You're mine!

f9nzac.jpg

:'(

Ghost takes out the sniper who sniped me. I spawn next to the ghost.

15632fm.jpg

I has Battle Beetle again.

2tf2q.jpg

Pwnt.

PART 3 - In Medias Res
Or, the beginning of the end.

5l9glh.jpg

Hrm. Two people quit. Guess they were tired of getting owned so hard.

Later on...

2nqfdrd.jpg

Don't fail me now, AR!

wtggft.jpg

Stupid Elite. AR beats you. If he had Flight on I probably would've pwned him harder.

A little bit after that, some guy sticks me and I die. :(

Part 4 - What are you going to do now?
I has ovashield.

After a couple more kills I spawn near the overshield. I, of course, grab it.

2dumupy.jpg

It's time to own.

izx2k6.jpg

Double kill, bitches.

Part 5 - The End

The end.

A little bit after that, realizing their futile efforts to overcome the awesomeness that is the Red team, the rest of the Blue team quits.

What control scheme did you use before this?

Nice picture stories though... I should make some from that Avalanche game where I got split up ;)

Yeah, that was me. I recently switched to try it out. I used Green Thumb before this. It's going pretty well. Kind of hard to shoot then melee, though.

You should. That would be a hilarious read.

XD George just went retarded on us. Why would he change a 20 year old movie just to make it more "kid friendly"?

I can't beleive people still standy by in Halo 3. I thought that shit was left behind with Halo 2 and the modders?

LOL Territories on Zanzibar, they wanted me to sit through FOUR fucking rounds of that shit?

I don't think so, thats a quit right there.

Seriously get that shit outta my fucking Halo. :lol

In retrospect I just almost got it again, Previously I almost had territories TWICE but it got vetoe'd meaning I almost got 5 games of Territories. Weighted WAY TOO HIGH.

Where did you see Eazy and I getting the last several achievements in the same order? Xbox.com?

Anyway, I got my perfection on Orbital with a triple kill (the last three kills of the game).

No, that little area on your gamercard that shows the last game your 'friend' played and the last 4 or 5 achievements they've obtained.

Yeah those are just extra blocks. When building the base I just laid down a bunch of double blocks outlining the size and shape I wanted, and as I aligned them properly and replaced them with other pieces I just pulled them off to the side. Partly so I can see the budget - first order of business is to build the next base, but to do that I'll make stockpiles of all the parts I used on the first one. That way I can see how much budget (plus original spare parts) I'll have left over before I start and make adjustments if necessary. There's a bit more I want to do with the bases, but I need to build out the centers first as well. I've been bitten so many times by running out of budget that I'm trying to avoid that with better planning.
