There's no better place to discuss our impressions of the last three maps. This thread will likely be going strong until Reach comes out but even that's not a given. I mean, there's a chance this thread can still go on even beyond Reach's release.LosDaddie said:Awesome VidDoc! Very well done.
Anyway, I hope this thread is still active once ODST drops. I was going to buy the new maps and get back into Halo3, but I'm going to wait 'til ODST. Gives me a chance to clear out a few games out of my gaming backlog.

May as well give players a medal for being able to reload the AR if you're going to do that.BuzzJive said:I think lasers are being discriminated against. Why no laser spree?
Yeah, that's a good idea. It would also give a chance to the drivers of vehicles to get out of the laser guy's line of sight. It would require someone using the laser to be constantly on the look out and very precise timing.Shake Appeal said:Some morning this week I was thinking about the Spartan Laser while in the shower, and decided it would be far less overpowered if it fired inevitably, i.e. pulling the trigger started the warm-up and there was no releasing the shot once you'd committed to it.
This would also make for even more hilarious teamkilling mishaps.
I was talking about medals that should be last night...BuzzJive said:I think lasers are being discriminated against. Why no laser spree?
I vaguely recall someone else offering that idea or something similar but yeah, I really like it. It would balance it well and make kills with it really satisfying.Shake Appeal said:Some morning this week I was thinking about the Spartan Laser while in the shower, and decided it would be far less overpowered if it fired inevitably, i.e. pulling the trigger started the warm-up and there was no releasing the shot once you'd committed to it.

You can cool down the plasma pistol if you let off the trigger gently.. So that wouldn't be like the plasma pistol.Dax01 said:Like the plasma pistol?
Yeah, that's a good idea.
I made an edit to my post. But yeah, for Shake's idea to work, Bungie would have to fix that weapon-switching glitch.Spasm said:Switch weapons.

It's a weapon with sniper-like precision over long distances and a huge reticle. Plus, it doesn't give a chance for the driver of a vehicle to avoid the incoming fire.SquallASF said:I never understood the Laser hate, I love that weapon. It gets 5 freakin shots, shots that only kill one person unless they are conveniently standing in line with a teammate or ofcourse a vehicle. How the hell is that overpowered? You can't spam the shots either, you're extremely vulnerable if someone closes in on you and you aren't already charged up. Furthermore, it's one of the few good means to take out rampaging vehicles that could otherwise make for a very unbalanced match. I find the laser a precise, skilled weapon for specific functionality. It's not like someone is running around getting 20 kills with the thing!
lazytonberry said:I tried adding the Gaf Halo 3 tag to my friend list, but it's full so I couldn't. I sent a message to it, but thought I'd repost here - what can I do now?
Since it's full, is there a second list possibly? Or am I just boned? I don't really have a lot of space on my list either to go add a bunch of halogaf people, so it'd have been nice to have just one tag to handle that. But oh well.

only if its a headshot.BuzzJive said:It wouldn't be the easiest medal to get (melee)
edit: and they already give one for individual laser kills (which no - it's not a fair trade, since sniper kills get individual and spree versions as well)
Dax01 said:Also, consider the opposite side of stopping a rampaging vehicle. Your team is trying to make a come back with the warthog, but a couple of seconds after you hop in, you're dead.

SquallASF said:It's a precise weapon yes, but the fact that it only holds 5 shots keeps it from being unbalanced. The point of the weapon is for the specific scenario of taking out vehicles, it's a tool for doing such.
You're painting a scenario here. You paint that scenario but I've seen it far more common to have a team zipping around with a warthog firing endlessly and spawn killing left and right with no hope of evading and taking them out or if you do,
You need a weapon that can put an end to such nonsense and with 5 shots, it's not a game breaker.
You're painting a scenario here, too.If the game is down to the line and a few kills make the difference between winning or losing, you have to be a fool to load up a warthog in the first place, presenting the other team the chance to collect those last few kills all at once.
With rockets, you have to be within a certain range (close) to get the best shot possible, and not all vehicles demand you be in such a range to be effective. The missile pod isn't bad because a good driver can avoid them (yeah, there are exceptions).Falt said:I see what you're saying but it could easily be a guy with rockets, a missile pod or even a chopper that ends your vehicular come back.
Yeah, but with all of those you have a significant chance to fight back. A guy with a laser completely nullifies the other team's ability to use vehicles and can even snipe people if he wants.Falt said:I see what you're saying but it could easily be a guy with rockets, a missile pod or even a chopper that ends your vehicular come back.
Dax01 said:It has five shots, yes, but those five shots kill anything instantly at long and medium range (it's a little more difficult to shoot at close range).

You paint that scenario but I've seen it far more common to have a team zipping around with a warthog firing endlessly and spawn killing left and right with no hope of evading and taking them out or if you do, the score gap is too great by then. You need a weapon that can put an end to such nonsense and with 5 shots, it's not a game breaker. If the game is down to the line and a few kills make the difference between winning or losing, you have to be a fool to load up a warthog in the first place, presenting the other team the chance to collect those last few kills all at once. Banshees are even worse, god is it easy to kill endlessly without resistance if there's no laser to take you out. Even missile pod cannons can be easily evaded. Laser balances gameplay IMO.

I wouldn't try to, but sometimes you're not sure and you find out the hard way.Who gets in a vehicle while someone else has the laser?
pet said:part of the reason vehicles dominate so much in halo 3 is the map design, not the lack of anti-vehicle weapons.
compare maps like headlong, terminal, and waterworks to valhalla, sandbox, and standoff.
the former maps include lots of interior spaces, raised walkways, and well-spaced cover so that somebody on foot can hide when a vehicle attacks them.
the latter maps have minimal amounts of indoor areas and have giant fields of nothingness, which leaves somebody out in the open with no chance of protecting themselves from the big bad warthog.

Dax01 said:A sniper rifle and beam rifle don't kill instantly unless it's a head shot. You can fire a laser on any part of a vehicle and it will completely destroy (minus some instances with the tank).

If you have a laser on Standoff then the other team's warthog is doomed and your hog goes uncontested. So not only do you have a weapon that'll instantly neutralize their hog when it spawns, but your hog is just obliterating the other team. The game's decided a minute into it.SquallASF said:Which allows for extra strategy. You want to use vehicles but the other team has the laser? Send a hit squad to claim it. When I play standoff, I rush for the laser so my teammates can have fun with the hogs. It's the other team's job to either beat me to it, or come after me once I've picked it up.

Not fun.
I mean honestly, how often is one team rampaging with the hog on Standoff until the other team manages to run into the middle of the map and grab the laser? What actually happens is that the team dominating with the laser and hog pick up the laser and continue dominating.
And how do you plan on completing the task if the other team has lasers and vehicles. Assault Valhalla's hill and pray they screw up so hard that you grab the laser from out under them?SquallASF said:You: "Does anyone have the laser?" Teammates: "NO" Don't get into a vehicle.
I have learned this the hard way. It is rather frustrating to get in a fresh vehicle only to be blown to smithereens before you can get 10 feet:lol That's why communication is essential. Your task is now to neutralize that laser sniper.
Tell that to the hundred of people I've aided in killing on Standoff. It's incredibly easy to avoid everything but the laser on Standoff.SquallASF said:Normally I would agree with you but not with Standoff. Standoff is so small that it's incredibly easy to take out a hog with grenades. There is also rockets and that map allows for close proximity with the enemy hog. Not to mention there is camo and since the map is so small, you can easily trek over to it's path and stick the bastard or rocket it.

It DOES take a little ingenuity to thwart that situation, yes... But it's not a game breaker. Unless it's a Gauss Hog...EazyB said:There's a reason 2,533 of my total 3,011 wheelman kills are on Standoff.
