I profess, I was really hoping for a boss battle against Gravemind and was a little let down with Guilty Spark being the final boss. Though I do admit wanting to destory a damn oracle since Halo 1.

BTW, since I've seen Luke and Shishka post on here many a time in the past... I've long held a question regarding rank in matchmaking. The purpose of the rank is to match up with players of a similar skill level yes? Then why the deus does the game go off of whether or not your team wins rather than the individual effort? I can't begin to count how many times I've been the MVP of a match and still went down a level. I would understand the concept of a team effort, but you can't control that with randoms and we aren't all fortunate enough to have friends of similar skill level wanting to play at the same time we would like to. That's actually what ruined matchmaking for me, I kept getting people on my team that would end up with a high negative k/d spread, people that betray you, or people that walk away from the controller. It's frustrating to have defeated so many Generals and witness kids I just destroyed the previous night having gone up in level the following night while I go down. I can't help but think it isn't balanced and something is amiss...or I just have the worst luck of all time in getting matched up with teammates.

Finished with my rant, I shouldn't have to bitch that much again haha Just always wanted to know why the system is set to team instead of individual and thought I could get an answer from the guys that make it happen. Yes, I do know of Lone Wolves but I find team play far more fun (when you have proper teammates).

I obviously can't give you an answer. However, from what I understand it seems you have a legitimate question. The current MS Trueskill system was developed with primarily using data from Halo 2's ELO system. What's funny about the current Trueskill system is that the system actually rewards you for being a FFA player. Meaning, the mathematicians behind the Trueskill system actually say that a person has a better ability to rank up faster in FFA than you do in a Team game. The more members on each team, the longer it will take you to rank up still. Here's a link to where I'm getting this stuff

If you read that, you'll see that FFA players actually have a better chance to go up in rank (Mu) than people who play Team games. Because a FFA game with 8 people, you have 7 unique opponents. In a Team Slayer game for example, you only have 4 unique opponents. From the chart provided by MS, it estimates it takes 3 wins for a player in a 8-player FFA game to go up. If a player in a 2 teams of 4 players (ie Team Slayer) it says it should be 10 games.

So the question on why Trueskill depends more upon Team effort when it seems to base higher weight on individuals in puzzling. I've seen Shishka respond several times that Team Slayer is mainly about winning or losing as a team and Trueskill treats you as such, but the basis of Trueskill itself seems to suggest otherwise.

Just thought I'd give you some food for thought on the subject.

Notice how he tells all the juniors to play with us. He's too cool to play Haloz.

I didn't know that the Trueskill system was a Microsoft thing.
Yea, people were complaining a few
read: shitton
pages back that Bungie put a M$ ranking system in their game. Halo 2's wasn't perfect, but it's leaps and bounds above the current system.

Halo 3 Spawntage
This should be a required viewing for all Bungie employees.

Well that's all on Bungie's part. Can they not do Boss Battles?
It seems like whenever Bungie goes out of their way to make a "boss battle" they end up tripping over themselves. And while boss battles traditionally don't work in FPS games, Bungie should've been able to nail it with Halo 3. Why? Scarabs.

A boss battle filled with QTE's would be balls. Don't want that at all. But once I saw that scarab climb over the building on The Storm I thought for sure we'd be fighting Gravemind in a similar fashion at the end of the game. As you all know my prediction didn't pan out and Gravemind was reduced to a shrieking gameplay speedbump with an occasional tentacle.

I know I've stated this before but, Bungie has the tools to produce huge AI driven enemies like the scarabs and the Halo 3 engine is powerful enough to render scenes with two of them in there among tanks, ghosts, bansees, hornets, and more. An arena where the whole environment was controlled by Gravemind where you'd have to systematically weaken him would've been the shit.

I use to think they were horrible, then I played Foundry and Blackout.

Also, Halo 2's rank system was certainly not perfect, but after their first initial patch, it was a great setup. Your very good players were mostly 25-35, above that were the elite players in the respective category. It was a challenge to rank up in the system and once you reached a certain level by standards, I felt it was fairly accomplishing. Halo 3's? Not very so at all. Hopefully if Reach is your standard Halo FPS, we get something very similar to the Halo 2 system ranks.

Well, it should be difficult but not impossible to rank up (like it was in Halo2). Weren't almost all players above level 40 modders and standbyers?

It wasn't impossible to rank up in Halo 2.

Who knows how far many of us would have gone legitimately hadn't it been for modders/cheaters (problem within the code, not the rank system). A Halo game with Halo 2's rank system without cheating? Sign me up.

I was playing some Big Team Slayer on SAND TARP tonight and the strangest thing happened.

I was in a banshee near the choke point in the middle, was blown up, spawned near the pelican, and was splattered.

By the top of the banshee.

My banshee.

That exploded 5 seconds earlier.

wat.

Wouldn't be the first time a banshee had its way with me.

Once on Valhalla, I used a missle pod on a banshee, it blew up - landed on a bases lift, flew out - and one of it's broken wings crushed me.

Suicide. : (

Let me try to find it - I played quite a few matches.

Also, yeah. I'd like to see that banshee vid. Good to see I'm not the only one constantly killing myself with my own banshee. :lol
I generally just randomly fall out of my Banshee because Bumper Jumper and Banshees don't mix well. But it really works well if you remember the configuration.

@Dax: Halo 2's ranking system was not impossible to level up in. At the beginning, you gained more experience for winning and less for losing. At higher levels, you gained less experience for winning, and lost more for losing (I'm using experience for lack of a better word). So you see, is was extremely difficult to gain a high rank, making the experience much more rewarding.

Yup, me too. "HAH! That fool thinks he can win?! Watch as my green wrath rains down upon him!" *presses B* "Aww, fuck."
The icing on the cake of course is when that same banshee gets hit my a hog, bouncs off a tree and explodes in my face causing another of my 'halo hates me' downfalls.

:lol

I'm getting on Halo now. If anyone needs another, shoot me an invite.
if I get a request from HaloGAF SQB I will strangle babies

ive probably been in a banshee like four times total. i cant stand not being able to shoot downwards like in the old games. its terrible

My roommate ended up flying a banshee too low and started getting jacked but the guy died so my friend started riding the beat up banshee like a boogy board down the creek on Valhalla. Idk how that happened. :lol

Eeergh.

I came back to Forge in Halo for the first time in a while recently, and I was rudely reminded of how damn annoying it is to use. I know its just an object editor, but...

Can we please get Bungle's Hammer at some point?

The ability to actually, finally, truly edit and create maps would be just wonderful enough that I might never play another game.

(And yes, I realize interface/controls are probably the biggest obstacle, but special bonus if we can hook up a keyboard and mouse).

Even if Reach doesn't include a Far Cry 2 map like editor, a snap-to-system would be a joy, or even an ability to add hills or different "atmospheric" settings.

Speaking of Forge, I'm being picky with my asymmetrical map. Just finally added the Sword and structure to the middle and I saved.

If you're asking this for H3, no.
Reach... it's a nice dream, but while hopefully forge'll be expanded upon (if it's there). If it is there I'd expect vast improvements.

i actually cant wait to finally get back into forge
maybe tomorrow depending on how much i have in the bank
. yea its annoying as hell and very cumbersome but i have this idea that has been kicking around in my head and i really want to try it out.

Still would love some sort of full blown map editor, but that's just a pipe dream.
I don't see why that must be considered a pipe dream. Bungie made forge as an object placer, but if they set out with the goal of delivering a full editor than they could totally do so. It won't be on the same level as PC editor with texture imports and the like but it could be above and beyond forge's tools.

Have you fiddled around with Far Cry 2's editor? It's hands down the best on the consoles, and if Bungie put as much effort on it it could outstanding.

Here's what I was able to create in about 13 hours. That's the time it took to learn the editor, create the geometry, and polish.
Really makes me wanna see dynamic lighting in Reach :P

Here's what other, probably more experienced people, were able to do. (Turf, Burial Mounds, Sandtrap, Last Resort)
Bragging note: while they're maps are really impressive, I made sure to get the scale of my map much closer :P

Link: Headlong, Ascension, the Pit, lockout

Blood Gulch
Sanctuary

Anyways, you get the point. I'll be really disappointed if Bungie doesn't tackle something similar in Reach.

I think I speak for most of us here, and say, absolutely agree. Add that to a standard Halo FPS, and wow. Allow custom search options and ability to promote your own maps, etc.

If you're really expecting Bungie to release a new game with the same amount of features as decade old PC games you will be disappointed. That would take way too much effort. ODST is 2 hours long and is out this fall. Preorder now.

I think with a properly maintained community playlist and a revamped player fileshare presentation they could pull it off within the framework of Halo 3's system.

A simple thing that Far Cry 2 does that I feel is pretty important, is their author signatures. When a player creates a map and saves it it stamps their name under "Original Author" as well as "Author". When another players downloads that map they can still go in and change the map to their heart's desire, save it, and publish it; but that first person will always be there under "Original Author." Again, it's not a big deal, but it ensure the creator that they'll always get credit for their work.

Sounds fairly reasonable. I'm no techie but the community playlist or custom game lobby should be a must for Reach. They discussed it, I believe, for Halo 3 and it ended up being axed.

Forge is fine the way it is, for now, but in a newer and perhaps bigger game we have to get bigger expectations, and they'll have to deliver. They did great with films and screenshots, therefore I think next is adding the deep customizations for custom map-making and the community setups.

I'm not exactly happy to say it but there will never be a full-scale map editor magijy-dowhat-mathing for Halo. Sure, it would be a fantastic feature for the community... but it's like puttting a .50 cal round straight through the face of priced DLC... and we all know how much people love makin' money.

Those maps are insanely well-done. I knew Far Cry's editor was capable, but had no idea you could create Ascension and Headlong so perfectly!

Although, those textures on Lockout...:lol

Firing up Far Cry 2's map editor is the most intimidated I have ever been by a console game.

Never expected to see something so fully-featured that doesn't require a keyboard and mouse.
