It seems to me like Epic senses they're maybe losing players and are trying to rapidly put out maps to keep the players. How many map packs can you expect people to buy in such a short amount of time too. I wonder what effect the lack of Halo 3 maps has had on the population of players. It'll be almost a year to the day when the new map pack comes out since the Legendary one. What effect did Cold Storage have? It's pretty interesting stuff. I'm really curious to see what radical changes will come with Gears of War 3.
Well they are two very different situations; Gears being MS published but owned and developed by Epic while Halo is owned and published by MS while Bungie is only a developer. With Halo 3 MS dictates everything (price, date, stupid as bundles) and because of that we've waited a year since the last map pack while Epic releases a complete POS yet are able to support their game with more DLC in 4 months than Bungie's been able to in 18... It's no wonder Bungie split from them and I'm glad as fuck they did.

Yeah fuck Microsoft, snatching Bungie up and saving them from bankruptcy because of their terrible games that no one bought or wanted to fund.

Set in the year 2032, Oni is a third person 3D action adventure with weapons and hand-to-hand combat featuring Konoko, a highly skilled agent.

I'm not saying MS is pure evil and haven't been great to Bungie but now they're getting in the way more than helping. Bungie as a developer in complete control of the IPs they're working on and with more say in DLC and content distribution is a stronger Bungie. They made a good team and I wish MS didn't get in their way and continued to be a great publisher with a great marketing team while owning Bungie.

Now it seems MS is still deeply involved with Bungie while not having complete ownership of them and that's without a doubt a better situation.

Why arn't people making their maps with the money glitch yet? I mean, I know the Object limit sometimes occurs before the money limit, but in instances like this you would be able to add to your map and then some. You could add the overshield and rockets that you wanted to add.

I just don't understand it.
In my case, it's because once I have this next map done, I'm going to pick one or two of mine and try to get in on GAF customs for feedback and films, and then submit to Atlas on b.net. And one of the rules of submission is, no money glitch.

And for the record, my time with Sandbox alone has been worth the $10. Had I spent $10 that is. Which I didn't.

Didn't you have an issue with object limit on your map before? Curious to know how much money I need to save or be wary of before I hit my limit. I have over $700 left, and I've made both bases to my map. I did put a few items down (weapons, grenades -- idea purposes). Keep in mind, I did delete the objects left on map (Voc's variant), but never deleted the flag spawn, score site, and the spawn area.

I tend to finish a lot of it tomorrow after work and hope to get a lot done.

So I just got done playing about 10 really long social big team battle matches and had a blast. The objective games with "heavy" gametype are a real pain in the ass though.

The real reason I'm posting is because ive regained my love for playing Halo and started up 3 weeks strong now and really want to play some fun customs or something. If any of you dont mind post your tags or pm me so I can get in on the l33t halo gaf games.

Does Gears tie their playlists to map packs?

No.

There's one playlist dedicated to the Flashback maps, but other than that, no. If everyone in the lobby has the maps, then they're thrown into the random pool. Same goes for the Combustible Pack maps. The game figures it out for itself, like Call of Duty 4.

Beaver Creek remake is almost geometrically complete. Ran out of money though and I can't think of a way to get enough back without deleting the two light orbs I have. Really breaks my heart thinking about it because the crypt is really dark and dank and BC was so nice and sunny. In a perfect world I'd have an extra $80 for a set of lights designationg red and blue base as well as a pair in the middle to illuminate the rest of the map. Has me bummed so I'm not sure I'll be going back and trying to finish it.

Too slow Omlet :P

See, you even missed Grifball.

Did your helicopter crash and burn?

What a dumb cop-out to use that link and say you're getting out maps slower than you like. Variants without shield doors and renamed maps with weapons replaced with sniper rifles don't count urk.

Admit it, even Epic is churning out maps faster than you guys and their game hasn't even been out a year yet ->

That's some impressive work DC...

I come from a similar background, solidworks, inventor, ANSYS, ACAD, Frameworks, PDMS.

You can't just jump into 3D Studio. 3d Studio MAX is an artistic program. It's not a design tool. There are some similarities but everytime I use it I feel like I'm doing it wrong. I've found it's so difficult navigating, choosing what you want. Just when you think you got something cool, you make one edit and it fucks up something that you can't fix. Then it's like "oh I should've done this and not that to create this geometry because now this point is fixed and making a weird shape." This problem would be fixed with some formal training though...

Try XSI Mod tool it's free and can be made to do mods.

http://www.softimage.com/products/modtool/

Good luck

It's pretty crazy Autodesk owns MAYA, 3D Studio MAX and SOFTIMAGE now...

Like I said, you have to understand the UI, once you get that it is easy. Any other problem is in your workflow, and fortunately 3dsmax comes with an edit-undo feature that you can set to go up to 500 times. As for your problem with odd geometry, most of that can be fixed with simple cuts and or target welding. Learning how to terminate edges only takes half an hour, if that. If he wants to do any kind of art, or high poly models, xsi mod tool is not the program for him. 3dsmax can handle a higher poly load, and isn't so peachy with subdivision.

Yes, autodesk also owns mudbox now too.

I really don't get this either. I'd assume all the money glitch maps are not allowed in MM according to Shishkas "RULES OF ATLAS" (LOL).

But I know all my maps are Money Glitched. Mainly because it gives me the freedom to do what the fuck I want to do. (sans the fact that Forge is pretty fucking terrible)

I have a pretty decent Ivory Tower that is 4 different stories and took several hours just to build the rough draft because it was such a complex process of creating the under sword level going to the floor level followed by the circle walkway level followed by the sniper level up top.

I also have a two level map based on Lasertrons double-story lasertag arena. I dunno if you guys have Lasertrons or its just a local thing. This is what the map looks like but with halo shit:

Laser_Tag_Center_iso_map_large.gif

A lot of columns and pillars and defense to duck into a upper and lower level which can be gotten to from right or left ramps or the ramps near the bases. There are two big holes open on the top level to have a two level gunfight. Lots of sneaking between pillars. Would work very well with SWAT.

I'll end saying as long as the map plays without framerate reduction (even though that happens all the time for me on orbital from all the fuckin nades) it should be allowed. On a map per map basis.

The Flashback Map Pack doesn't count, it was included right in the box. I hardly consider that DLC when it's not even on the marketplace.

That's seven DLC maps in total when the Snowblind map pack releases.

Halo 3 has the Heroic Map Pack, Legendary Map Pack, Cold Storage and Mythic Map Pack.

That's 10 all together, and three more on the way. We've could have had those 13 already, but Microsoft manages the content.

You could probably make a case for Epic releasing two map packs faster than Bungie but that argument becomes invalid if Epic decides not to release anymore map packs. I think they might churn out one more after Snowblind though.

Well then you can't count Mythic map pack since you have to get Halo Wars LE AND Halo 3 ODSREUSEDCAMPAIGNLEVELSTHATDIDNTMAKETHEFIRSTCUTBUTISNOWFIXEDANDFINISHED. And isnt available in MARKETPLACE STILL.

Flashback counts. End of discussion.

I still can't believe every time a map pack is released people are still so outraged they actually cost MONEY. Holy shit its like no one here understands how business works. TEN DOLLARS! OH NOEZ!

Not all businesses operate the same way.
Look at Valve - they don't charge for extra content.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/valve-wont-charge-for-dlc
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, listening to conversations between Valve and XBL reps regarding the 360 Left4Dead content.
I'm sure M$ wanted to charge for that.
A couple of developers have wanted to give away content for free, and were in fact denied.
Has Bungie, besides the lone Cold Storage map, ever wanted to give away free DLC?

Some may be outraged, but I imagine there are more who are disappointed after shelling out $170 for a video game ($130 for "limited edition" cat helmet, $40 for Heroic/Legendary/Mythic 1&2 map packs) there was but a crumb given away in return. (Chill Out remake.)
Some will say about DLC - "You don't have to buy it if you don't want to...eventually it'll be free" in defense. Telling that to the rabid Halo fanbase is like teasing a crackhead with a rock on a string in a hypnotic fashion. These people bought the action figures, H3 Mountain Dew, books, extra fileshare storage space, H3 Slurpees at 7-11, etc. You think they are going to wait half a year for the maps to be free? Hell no.

There are a bunch of ways to spin the worth of the game and add-ons, the last being "Oh noez, it costs ten dollas!" from the retards.
Sure, you can debate that you've gotten $170 of fun out of the game. On the other hand, there are others that can say they've gotten hundreds of dollars of fun out of a $50 new game that was stuffed full of content at release.

Fact is, the entire HALO trilogy's profitability is probably beyond measure.
Any Bungie employee posting here want to throw out a round figure of how much money the Halo franchise has generated overall? (Double dog dare ya).
Is it really so unreasonable to expect a free (for everyone on release day...not 8 months down the road) map pack here and there?

Btw, it's my opinion that bundling half of the Mythic pack with the $83 Halo Wars LE RTS, was dirty marketing. A real "screw you" to Halo fans from M$.
All 6 maps should have been released last fall and sold for $10...if not given away as a final token of appreciation.

Uh wut?

The Mythic Map Pack comes out April 9th on the marketplace.
The Flashback Map Pack is never coming out on the marketplace. It was INCLUDED with the game.

Wrong Flashback wasn't included with the game. A code to DOWNLOAD it was. It IS DLC.

I seem to remember seeing that the Flashback pack was released last month or something, and being a little annoyed that it was. Am I wrong about that?

EDIT: Semantics, Juices. The whole point he's making is that it's free and you can't get it unless you buy the game new.

The bundling wasn't dirty. Holding back the release on XBLM was dirty.

The Legendary maps really need to be put into Multi-Team. I need some awesome Ghost Town & Cold Storage 2v2v2v2 action. Crazy King and Oddball would fit so well on those maps.

No I get that hes trying to make a point but it wasn't on the GoW2 disc it was additional content. So its DLC. His viewpoint of it not being available so it doesn't count as DLC is more semantics than my example. You cannot argue this because DLC means you download it and you download the Flashback map pack. Those are just da rules of da game.

But as you see it is available now so this is all moot.

Willeth said:
Given the fact that Legendary is still doing Gangbusters in sales even now, I can't blame anyone for waiting to release Mythic.

I can.

Imagine how much more money they could have made if people downloaded both simultaneously. Some people may get tired of the game or run out of their XBL subscription and stop buying DLC.

No, what? It doesn't matter if you download it or not, it matters at what stage you get it. If you're not online, you can't use the maps as intended, and if you are online, it's absolutely no trouble to get them. IF it were on the disc it would be exactly the same situation.

ITS DLC. The qualifier for DLC logically is whether you download it or not. If you download it, it is DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT.

This is the final post about this you're obviously just trolling if you are actually going to argue this.

I'm sure Microsoft does not regret delaying Mythic at all. They've made revenue that they missed out on with Halo 2's DLC.

Can you fileshare it if you give up? I'd like to see what you've done with the bases, and especially the river.

I'm not arguing that it's not DLC. I'm saying that you can't credit them for releasing it as a separate map pack, when it was both available at release and included with the game. It's not comparable to something like Heroic that came out months after.

Lots of interesting discussion about Map Pack charges etc.

The way I see it, i've been happy so support Bungie by buying their maps for the past year and a half, despite Halo 3 sales being more than stellar. I'm still thankful for the effort and content, and will put down my money when the time comes. Free maps like Cold Storage add to the value. There's a little bit of me that's annoyed because PC Gamers would get them for free, but I'm prepared to look past that and look at their actual worth.

What really got to me though, was that I was prepared to do this for Mythic - prepared to spend my money as usual and be part of the first to get it. It's on Xbox Live, it's being hosted, and it's available for download. Only problem is, I can't even buy it. I'm not complaining about not getting it for free, but I have money, I have played Halo 3 in shed loads since release, I laid down money on release for all the other packs, and yet here I am, as a loyal customer, watching as half the fanbase plays happily and regales each other with awesome tales and creations. And why?

Because I don't want/can't afford to buy Halo Wars.

As a long term, loyal, vocal fan who triumphs everything Bungie-Halo, I get nothing. Not even the right to buy some maps. I'd have preferred some sort of loyalty awareness - say buying previous packs entitling you to early Mythic, or even better, a general release on day one. Now I realise this is a Microsoft decision more than anything else, but that doesn't change the fact that i'm still sat here mapless. Oddly enough, this month has seen me almost stop playing Halo. I've been on maybe once since the Mythic Playlist went live, because I feel, frankly, left out. I'd be very curious to see the userbase figures for the Mythic/Wars exclusivity period and see if it's not down overall as I imagine a few people are feeling much the same. I suspect the Mythic adoption rate will be the lowest of the Map Packs so far, due to it's staggered and slightly more confusing release pattern.

I was finding this a very frustrating experience, watching so many people play a part of Halo I couldn't access, and was hyped for the maps. Now, as some mediocre reports come in regarding Mythic and my hype levels are almost non-existent, i've started playing Left 4 Dead, and, for the first time, i'm considering not buying a Halo 3 Map Pack. I probably will, but it shouldn't even be in doubt.

Looks who's talking.

My criteria was simple; it's on the marketplace to download. It applies to every game. Giving the flashback map pack special criteria wouldn't be logical for all other games. However, someone has provided SOLID evidence, and I would be willing to accept the Flashback map pack as part of that simple criteria.

That being said, my other point remains the same.

Gears of War 2;

Flashback, Combustible, and Snowblind all equal 12 maps.

Halo 3;

Heroic, Legendary, Cold Storage, Mythic, Mythic Part.2 all equal 13 maps.

If it remains the same, the whole point of Epic pushing out maps faster becomes invalid. Hell, I don't even know why anyone would even consider this a valid argument to start with. Microsoft controls the content, plain and simple.

He's pissed that people seem to have a false sense of entitlement and are unwilling to pay $10 for three finely crafted maps. He's also pissed that Epic seems to have created more downloadable maps in a year than Halo 3 has thus far.*

And I know that he's pissed that I don't have my Xbox and can't carry him in every game of SWAT that we play. ;)
