I walked through your map last night and noticed that one of the little ramps that leads up to the tunnels on the upper level was missing. Nice layout with the base. I really like how they came out.
Thanks for the feedback.

And whoops - I remember noting the ramp a day before I finished it and I never got around to putting it in.

It costs $5. I have $3 of budget left. Hmm. I think a couple of spike grenades are going to go away. :lol

Isn't this your second map that you are cutting it this close with the budget?

Yeah, Skyline used it up. However, I deleted all the default stuff before starting; had I not done that I'd have had plenty. Sandstorm has budget left, and the one I'm currenty tinkering with should have some left over as well.

Its all about pulling vertices, pulling out exposed edges, and welding. Then placing edge loops so when I subdivide the edges closer together become "magnetic" and tighter. Creating rounded sharp, yet subtle realistic curves.

Have you ever tried chamfering edges and then sending the model into zbrush/mudbox? Do you know by chance if making your own edge loops is better than chamfering when exporting? Particularly when it comes to corners.

Chamfering has a habit of being messy unless you chamfer the whole loop, otherwise it builds triangles and causes pinching when subdividing. I only chamfer on loops that are circles, the rest I do by putting edge loops closer to eachother to make them curve when sub-d. Plus it allows you have a smoother model with more control.

Making edge loops is much more desirable when exporting because zbrush will pinch much more than max does when subdividing to higher levels of detail. So if you chamfered and it created a triangle, your SOL.

Here is showing basemesh, then subdivided version.

I really want to punch the idiot who thought pricing a pack of three maps at $10 is a good idea.

Microsoft really needs to address DLC pricing disparity.

Gears of War 2 got dragged over the coals when they released the Combustible Map Pack at $10. They are coming out with a Snowblind Map Pack on 3/31 that contains four maps at the same price point.

Ever since the DLC era started, it's been largely accepted that a pack of four maps is about a $10 value (unless you're awesome like Valve; I would have mentioned Criterion until they started whoring it up with their DLC cars).

But without an official consortium on DLC content value, it's all up to the publishers. Microsoft has taken advantage of this position. They nickel-and-dime their customers by stretching accepted price points for AAA game content (such as Halo 3 and Gears of War 2) that they know some people will not hesitate to buy.

I waited until the Heroic Map Pack was free and the Legendary Map Pack got cut to $7.50 before I picked them up.

I am disappointed to hear that the Mythic pack will be following the same garbage $10 route. But I should have expected no less considering they shamelessly attached this, DLC for a FPS, to peddle more $80 limited editions of a RTS.

Sorry, but I will be continuing to not buy a pack of 3 maps for $10.

DcLevartho: This sounds like you have the great start at producing a life sized Recon helmet to give away after I buy a piece of paper for a couple hundred $. :D

As for the DLC....yeah, it sucks, but people vote with their wallets. I haven't bought too many games on XBL or such, but if I really want one, I'm probably gonna pay for it.....or get it for free, like SFIIHD :P

You payed $400 for SFIIHDR.

Sadly dude, its a little too late. MS makes too much money on those $10 DLC "I is stupid for buying packs" I'm one of them I've bought all three map packs on day one, and only do that for Halo(but I've put about 500 hours in halo 3, and 98% at least was pure fun:lol , so the $110 I've invested in Halo 3 is worth it to me) That's really what is boils down to though, if its worth it to you, buy it, if not don't! It's only going to get worse though, next gen games will probably be $70 and DLC will go up to, so it sucks ass, but that's the way it is!

I'm ok with spending money on Halo maps. I know that I'll get the most out of them because I play Halo a ton. I'll be playing on these maps I paid 10$ for, for the next couple of years, putting in tons of games and hours into them. I'm fine with that. I won't spend 10$ for any amount Gears of War 2 maps though. I just don't play that game on a regular basis. Sure, I agree that the maps should be cheaper, I would love that. But I'm certainly getting what I paid for.

Same here. I have zero interest in picking up the GOW2 maps.

Exactly. When I was enjoying Gears 2, I never got the Combustible Map Pack. No chance in hell I'm buying that, or the new one coming out now. It's just too little too late from Epic. They are finally starting to fix the game, and even so... Gears just doesn't seem like the type of game I'd pay $10 for maps. With Halo 3, I know it'll last, and I know custom variants of maps and gametypes will keep these fresh.

What is going on then?

Days of XBLA promotion

I think the Dishwasher, Flock!, and Outrun come out on that week, and the one after that.

The Heroic map pack is the only Halo map pack (2 or 3) that I regret buying. All three maps were disappointing and one of them is just plain garbage. Sandbox being another Forge centric map gives me the bad vibes of Foundry, but everyone seems to be enjoying that one.

This.

This is how folks should be thinking. Sure, at its core, the price may seem a bit much, but it comes down to how an individual responds to each map pack. One person, who plays Gears 2 regularly, may feel that buying the CMP and the newest one coming out next week are totally worth it because it'll just add to their daily experience (achievements, new playlists, new arenas to battle in, etc.).

With Halo 3's map packs adding new skulls, achievements, new playlists to accomodate them, customs with friends late at night on the new arenas; I know I'm getting my worth. But that's just me. Don't let someone's decision to get X map pack affect you. Also, I know I'll be playing Halo 3 a year from now (which would make it almost 3 years since Halo 3 released) which is insane (but awesome).

Unlike many of you, I know I'll be playing Gears 2 and its respective map packs a year from now. I'm just a die hard Gears fan no matter what, I guess, and with the new update arriving tomorrow and new map pack next week (4 in it), I'll be spending some more time there, as well as Halo 3 and Halo Wars (<3).

I still can't believe every time a map pack is released people are still so outraged they actually cost MONEY. Holy shit its like no one here understands how business works. TEN DOLLARS! OH NOEZ!

Why arn't people making their maps with the money glitch yet? I mean, I know the Object limit sometimes occurs before the money limit, but in instances like this you would be able to add to your map and then some. You could add the overshield and rockets that you wanted to add.

I just don't understand it.

I got Halo Wars today! Yay! I walked around all of the maps and have played 2 matches on Assembly and a Neutral bomb on Orbital. Those maps are gorgeous while Sandbox (for good reasons) doesn't look as good. I'm not gonna judge the maps just yet but initial impressions are looking good.

I actually had some fun on Neutral Bomb Orbital which is weird because the last Neutral Bomb game I play was probably on Midship. I was playing with people with no mics and against some other players that were competent. We lost 3-0. I don't know the layout of the map yet. I was going in the wrong direction a few times. There are some cool spots on that map that make for good places to fight in. Like the Hallway with the engravings commemorating those 2 men. That was a cool place to fight. I do wanna play on some of the maps you guys have made though.

If you guys are playing customs, don't be afraid to invite me ;)

I own a business and once you start fucking with the price, it's a slippery slope. Once you say to them that $10 is okay, then it's $12.50. Then it's $15. And so on.

That's some impressive work DC...

holy fuck at the details in your pictures.

Like, I can re-create the model to the best of my accuracy in 3d but I never had the impulse to add textures to it. how hard would it to use 3dsmax if the only 3d modeling programs i've ever used is Pro-E and SolidWorks? Also, how hard is it to add/create textures in zbrush if i'm a novice at Photoshop at best?

I come from a similar background, solidworks, inventor, ANSYS, ACAD, Frameworks, PDMS.

You can't just jump into 3D Studio. 3d Studio MAX is an artistic program. It's not a design tool. There are some similarities but everytime I use it I feel like I'm doing it wrong. I've found it's so difficult navigating, choosing what you want. Just when you think you got something cool, you make one edit and it fucks up something that you can't fix. Then it's like "oh I should've done this and not that to create this geometry because now this point is fixed and making a weird shape." This problem would be fixed with some formal training though...

Try XSI Mod tool it's free and can be made to do mods.

Good luck

It's pretty crazy Autodesk owns MAYA, 3D Studio MAX and SOFTIMAGE now...

Just curious, did you buy Halo Wars solely for the maps or do you actually plan to spend some time with the maps?

Or would have you preferred to wait until April 9th, the official date of when the Mythic Map Pack hits the marketplace?

I'm just curious.

was given Halo wars as a gift today. though it wasn't the LE.
so how long do i have to wait to pay the difference to get me some maps?

(i have not been signed into Halo since RE5 came out)

I was going to get Halo Wars regardless of whether or not the maps were offered with it. I got the Collector Edition only because I wanted the new maps. I would not have preferred to wait for the maps in April. I played 2 missions so far in Halo Wars and I'm gonna keep playing it.

April 9th, for 800 points, is the release of the Halo 3 map pack on Xbox Live Marketplace.

How many maps will have released for Gears of War 2 by the time the Mythic map pack comes out.

So fucking stupid.

As of April 9, the tally will be:

Halo 3 (released on September 25, 2007): 9
Gears of War 2 (released on November 7, 2008): 12

Gears got 12 maps in one map pack?
There are 2 map packs consisting of 7 maps. It seems like he was also counting the Flashback Map Pack (5 maps) which is free via a code included with new copies of the game.

It seems to me like Epic senses they're maybe losing players and are trying to rapidly put out maps to keep the players. How many map packs can you expect people to buy in such a short amount of time too. I wonder what effect the lack of Halo 3 maps has had on the population of players. It'll be almost a year to the day when the new map pack comes out since the Legendary one. What effect did Cold Storage have? It's pretty interesting stuff. I'm really curious to see what radical changes will come with Gears of War 3.

Damn, how many maps are there total for the game then?

I don't own Gears 2, but do the people that do find these maps any good? I'm just wondering what the quality of these maps are. How do you make that many good maps in such a short time...

I would bet that all those maps were done by the time Gears 2 hit retail. I also think its possible that this latest pack was completed post-launch though. As for the odd release schedule, I'm not entirely sure why its that way and I doubt anyone is really going to come up with the correct explanation. Microsoft certainly is a factor.

It's a really crummy argument anyway. You want more maps. We want you to have more maps. We're getting there. Slower then we'd all like, but it is what it is.
