Online, the cheapest is £42.99 from ShopTo, and they ship next day recorded for free.

High street is £45-50 if my info from yesterday is right :P

That's a little less that what I paid, but I'm happy to have it right now already!

Alight, it's about that time for me to come out of my usual month-month 1/2 retirement of Halo. Last time I was REALLY playing was that time period where the introduced the playlist update removing DLC slayer. I go through these spells where I'll just play constantly for weeks, and then I'll just lose interest and won't play for like a month or so:lol

So, new maps hit next week. Need to head on and shake off the (major amount) rust that I no doubt have.

As I stated in the HW thread. FYI for those interested,

Pre-order Halo Wars Limited Edition for Cheap!

Buy.com has just notified us that they will be offering Halo Wars Limited Edition for a low $67.99 ($79.99 list) starting Monday, March 2, 2009.

Right now, you can order the Halo Wars Regular Edition for $52.99 (save $7).

Worth dropping my regular edition from GS at this price point really.

I can't speak for Wu or his team, but his site is halo.bungie.org, not halo.org; they are first and foremost a group of Bungie fans. They've been doing news and such regarding Halo Wars, but I think the site as a whole is more focused on Bungie, and as such the Halo material that Bungie generates. Though I'm not sure how that does or does not extend to say, the latest book (which I still haven't gotten around to reading).

I keep forgetting that Halo Wars is not Bungie produced....

It will be a sad/interesting day when the next "Halo" title is announced/released and it's not by Bungie.

Heh - haven't actually looked at it yet, but the (mini) screenshots are interesting... one of the guys at Rooster Teeth made a Boarding Action-inspired map.

Bah! Bah, I say!

In all honesty I hope it plays well, it looks quite a bit closer than BA was, the BR might shred through too easily.

Incidentally, pics of my first map attempt after the exact remake of Boarding Action, in all its non-interlocked glory, will be up shortly.

Turf is basically ready to roll out. But I need to take some pictures before its unveiling. Maybe add an Assault gametype.

Expect the map and pics around 3pm CST today.
Looking foward to it. I actually just starting digging back through today's posts to see if you'd released it.

Voc/Cocop do you guys have the same stance on Halo Wars and it's connections with the Halo universe? (I guess being able to play it and watch the cutscenes may help you guys formulate an answer though so I'll wait until next week for impressions :D)
Like Ghaleon noted, I'm not surprised that HBO wouldn't stray too far from the Bungie-centric material. Wu's respecting his staff's decision here and it makes perfect sense within the context of the site -- a site which focuses on Halo and Bungie.

I'm actually interested to see what might come from HBO's realm once Bungie launches their new IP, whatever that might be. And Wu, it's a shame that I didn't know you were in Orlando last weekend. I would have taken you out for a bite to eat or something.

hey dax, look at your pm's.
Thanks, S1kkZ! Probably won't have time to play them, today, though. I've got work to do, my computer is having issues, and I got KZ2.

HaloGAF (Mythic Owners): I'll definitely be on tomorrow (if not all day), so send me an invite anytime.

Edit: New maps=new avatar, too.

I got myself some awesome new maps today, so I decided I'd try and make one of my favorite maps: Warlock/Wizard: I've been at it for a good 6 or 7 hours and Its nowhere near done but here is a progress report.

First shot is an aerial shot to show th basic layout

Why is this not in your file share? You're doing it wrong.

Jason Pace, the guy apparently "in charge" of Halo now, has specifically said, "Make no mistake; Halo Wars is canon." So take that for what you will. I'll obviously reserve judgement for when I've played the game, but you can bet that I'm definitely curious as to how its plot plays out.

The concept of cannon has always puzzled me. Who decides what's officially cannon or is that an oxymoran?

When MS releases Grunt Dance Party is that part of the cannon because MS owns the intellectual property?

As long as it talks about what they do in their off time. :D

Officially, it would depend on whether or not they made that determination. Obviously some Halo elements are not canon, even within Bungie's realm, like many of the easter eggs we find throughout the game. I mean, there's no legitimate canonical reason for Jason Jones to have his shirt off in subzero temperatures. It makes no sense -- way too cold for shirtless volley ball.

I think the type of "canon" we're talking here though is different -- more like: Does it warrant respect from longtime fans? In the end, regardless who says what, the audiences' opinion of the characters/stories presented will dictate what is respected as canon and what isn't. Since I like to talk about Halo 3 in this thread, and not Halo Wars, I'll leave it at that. Ascendant Justice might have something to say on a more official capacity after we've reviewed the warez.

By definition, anything that is officially licensed and released by the owner of the IP is typically considered canon. The owners also have the ability to deny canonity to their own works. For example, if MS released Grunt Dance Party, it might never be directly stated, but by MS's wording in interviews and such, it could be assumed that they don't consider the game to be canon. Following that train of thought, canon could also be derived from interviews and news articles and things like that where the representatives of the IP speak officially about a matter regarding the IP's universe.

I think Star Wars is generally the go-to example when discussing canon, and Jeremy could tell you more about that than I could, but typically problems with canon crop up when retconning starts to occur: the company usually considers their licensed products to be canon, while the fanbase wants to deny that, because retconning often results in contradictory scenarios, which fans obviously dislike.

Most of the time, what is and isn't canon is usually defined by the quality and intended audience of the material in question; while a Halo novel is definitely considered canon, a 5-minute Halo cartoon that comes on a CD-ROM packaged with the "Halo Blaster Rifle" toy may not be considered canon (even if it's not directly addressed). So what I'm saying is that each IP is different, and what is and isn't canon is usually defined by specific scenarios as the IP grows (much like what Jeremy just described in his first paragraph).

In the case of Halo, when the guy "in charge," says "this is canon," then all we can do is hope that it fits with the rest of the universe.

Would have been cool, actually... but the weekend was such a whirlwind...

We went down to see family (but not family that lives there, family that came down from Wisconsin and Minnesota to MEET us there). They brought flu with them (which totally hosed their Disney plans with their kids - 3 and 1). By the time we left, WE had the flu (which made the flight home a serious nightmare - two of my kids filled a total of 8 ziploc bags with vomit over the course of two flights).

In between, we did our best to actually TALK to our relatives, and play a little on some of the rides at Universal. There wasn't a huge amount of free time. (Like, maybe... 20 minutes, total, over 4 days :D :D )

I thought Frankie was in charge. What in the world is he doing these days? He used to post here all the time...

Thanks Vococop (trademark), I don't follow many "universes" so I was unaware of all that fancy cannon jibber-jabber.

He gave up on GAF, he gave up on Halo, he gave up on life...

Frankie's probably been finishing up Halo Wars, I'd imagine he was pretty busy :P.

I would have had more screens, but mah screencap has been reached. For now, here's Mountain, sans finished. Spawns are moving now, and anti-camp base layout and weapons will come shortly thereafter.

But the Halo Wars thread is so dull without you guy's input in there. It's like a donut without the cream filling...

looking forward to more official reviews from the AJ crew

No, I think Frank's just the PR guy over there.

u mad agin

No, but seriously, I think Frank may be the lead writer for... I don't know, maybe for the entire franchise? I don't know if it's been specifically stated. But Jason Pace's title is "Halo Studio lead producer," and in every interview I've seen with him, he's come across as the man in charge.

Looks a lot better than that POS you had me standing on a few days ago.

It's hard to judge the lines of site from that single perspective but it may need some cover and places where it'd be safer to spawn.

I'm not tired of Valhalla, and I first played that in May 2007.

I totally agree with Valhalla, but I remember a lot of people complaining about being tired of the Legendary maps after the first few weeks. I firmly believe the reason I hate Avalanche now is because I played it every other match (if not more frequently) for a while there in matchmaking. I don't think there will be much of a community divide or anything once the maps hit marketplace, but I can already see some people complaining about being tired of x map when everybody who's just gotten them are wanting to play it all the time.

Also Red vs Blue boxset get :D . I also may be getting a Mythic code from someone, but I think they're kidding :(

I'm already tired of Orbital.
I enjoy multiflag on it though. Everything else is lackluster.

I spent many hours on the map and even failed a test for it so if you enjoyed the original, please try it.

And most importantly, leave any suggestions/feedback (PM would be best).

Have fun with it!

Really off topic but how man Halo GAFers are picking up Killzone 2? If there is enough of us, I'll make a Halo GAF clan.
Do it, I'll be getting my copy when Amazon ships it early next week.

I'm getting it. I'm still debating whether to order it from Fry's or to trade in some stuff towards it though...

I'm really impressed, dude, this is spot-on. Walking around in it is kind of weird, actually, because it's so similar. It really sucks, though, that the budget ran out when it did, because you were super close to walling off all of the extraneous areas.
