Hrm tricky call. Is an expansion considered a new game? I'd definitely coin this as an expansion. I mean, technically it's a new game, but it's also just adding content to an old game.

In my opinion, this is an expansion to an existing game, therefore not a new game, and you keep your Flight.

agreed ... you made it out with your flight by the skin of your teeth!

Well, we aren't switching threads anytime soon.

That's cool for me!

I think it's a single-player expansion, putting you in the shoes of the mop-up party ODST marines to cleanse New Mombasa, right after Master Chief has hitched a ride on the hyperspace jump from the Covenant ship that departed in the middle of New Mombasa. can't recall the mission or ship name.

It's obvious that the explosion is caused by the hyperspace jump (same light intensity, city, height, etc), as it was in Halo 3. The City-AI (superintendent?) was offline after the blast, went online again and saw one more ODST landing (you?).

You will be cleaning up the streets and kicking the Covenant out, ODST-style once and for all. RECLAIM NEW MOMBASA FOR THE HUMAN RACE!

I think this is a very safe assumption.

Well it's pretty much confirmed that the Superintendent is related to Halo since he's obviously watching over New Mombasa at some time around the Halo trilogy timeline. Also those images you posted are pretty condemning proof, aren't they...
And then there's the Marketplace description of the video:

"High action and deep mystery await players in this new Halo 3 campaign experience. Prepare to drop!"

But I think you should keep the Flight armour, just because it rocks.
Wow @ the bolded part. Wow.

I have a feeling the Superintendent is going to play a very big passive role in the game. Perhaps assisting you, akin to Cortana? Are ODSTs able to insert AIs (if that's what the Superintendent is) the way Spartans can?

Keep the Flight, Eazy. Keep it on.

I'm thrilled. New Halo game from Bungie, featuring ODSTs. No reveal on genre (FPS or 3rd person) and the lone drop pod at the end is interesting, given the 16 that split off earlier.

At any rate: fuck yes.

Agree.

If Eazy's gonna keep the flight, it's not gonna be because he won the bet...

I bet my flight helmet that the superintendent is not part of the Halo universe.

I'm modifying my position: keep it, but take a two week flight-ban, during which you have to wear Hayabusa.

Don't forget to add that you will be aided by your SuperIntendent AI! (SI>Cortana)

The transcripts from the AI conversations seem like he might actually be a hindrance.

I don't think this will be single-player. Campaign expansion? Obviously. Single-player? I think it will be focused more as a squad/team game though I'm sure you can play by yourself. Playing with friends will be a more full experience.

I'd like to think I'm know for my ability to own dem nubs but I guess the rubine dinosaur will do.

I'm a man of my word and like I said, have already made piece with Flight. Totally did not see this coming though. I'mma get some more sleep and let others chip in on this world-altering decision. :P

Quickly though. If this is simply an expansion I still feel they have the tools and skill to make it feel like a new game. Perhaps even using Halo 3's colorful engine with some trickery to make even look totally different (darker).

I'm SO fucking glad this Halo think looks to only be a side-project. Just hope we don't have to wait terribly long for their next IP announcement.

It would be interesting if it took place after the events of H3. Where all the humans believe Master Chief is dead and are searching for the body. Ending up meeting MC at the shield world and then ends.

Perhaps the new multi-player maps will be inspired by the locations in this game? Orbital? Citadel? Longshore?

I was thinking the same thing.

Well, you lost the bet, Eazy. The bet was made on whether SI was part of the Halo universe or not, and it is. :(

I've heard a lot of talk lately about Bungie being sick of making Halo FPS games but I remember reading somewhere that there was a part of the team that still loved making Halo stuff. I'm sure those guys are working on this happily. I'm excited to finally be able to battle on Earth as Halo 2 teased. Outskirts and Metropolis are two of my top ten campaign levels in the Halo series.

We all know (from the screenshots thread amongst other things) how awesome Halo 3's lighting is, as well as how awesome some of the Forge filters are. I'm sure Bungie can make some pretty awesome darker stuff with the Halo 3 engine.

Personally, I am very glad with this announcement. But you're right, it does seem to be something a small team might be working on, while the main Bungie staff is working hard on the beginning phases of a new IP. I would also be very pleased if that was the case.

Already posted this in the other thread dedicated to it, but hey, why not repost it here as well:

Anyways, I dunno how many teasers have to be released before people on here get the point and realize what a teaser does - TDG already beat me to it, but people are crying that they got teased by...

...a teaser.

And there was plenty of info from that I could tell, as others have noted as well...

It's definitely New Mombasa as a few things said directly in the video, the tether is either still up, meaning that it's right before the Chief got there, or it's another one/new one, going on at the same current time as the events in Halo 3...

What it ultimately looks like is that they are giving something special to the fans that wanted to play that E3 level, or wanted to continue in New Mombasa, by letting us play on as ODST's as the Chief left - either in first person as an ODST itself, or through the eyes of this A.I.

Great teaser that managed to show loads of info that fans will find, and I can't wait to see the results of the massive dissection that this video will get...

P.S.: Eazy should keep the Flight, coming from a Flight user like myself whenever I switch to an Elite - he knows that he was wrong, that' what matters the most... :)

Rumor has it, that it'll be out on the 6th of January

January 6th huh? That's my 21 birthday...so, should I get shit faced the night of January 5th and play the Halo expansion hung over or should I play the Halo 3 expansion and then get shit faced later that night on the 6th...decisions decisions

It's 5 days before my 21st birthday. High five, January '88 brother! :lol

Oh man, I just thought of something quite shitty.

I hope this means the multiplayer maps aren't held back until next year to be released alongside this expansion. That would suck.

So if the game's based on a squad of ODSTs, that means you lack your Spartan super powers, meaning no jumping off buildings and meleeing little bastards to death, right?

Maybe it'll be like Rainbow Six...TO THE XTREME

That's what I've been thinking. The achievements that we have seen (but can't get yet) could very likely go along with the campaign expansion (disc?) that we hopefully get to purchase in January. It would also make sense because then there are these new skulls that would add to the new campaign's gameplay.

The bet was that the SI is not part of the Halo universe which it very clearly is........the flight has gots to go. :P

Also if this is some sort of halo expansion I am fucking jacked. I honestly wasn't done with Halo campaign an episode is something I was definitely hoping to see.

A long and meaty standalone expansion campaign (bundled with all the DLC) would probably sell better than a shorter DLC episode.

Its so weird to go back and watch the old Halo 2 trailer. At one point I was so stoked for idea of melee combos but in retrospect it sounds and looks so dumb. And in that trailer the Ghosts didn't have the boost capability apparently. The guy playing never used it and the Brute in the short cutscene at the end didn't either.

Just a random thought....

Remember, Chief uses a drop pod in Halo 2 as well as the ODST's. :D

In all reality, though, if it is actually a Halo 3 campaign "expansion", and you aren't the chief...I wonder how Bungie will utilize shieldless ODST's versus elites/brutes.

Also...wasn't New Mombasa razed about midway through Halo 2?

Which means it could be a "After master chief leaves Earth in halo 2" as the starting point.....from an Earth perspective, rather than the Chief's.

Wait though if this is an expansion how will the ODST campaign tie into the Spartan/Elite multiplayer. Are you guys thinking that we will have some type of squad base marine campaign bundled with the original multiplayer?

So it IS a campaign expansion to Halo 3... <3.

Now, to state my chief concern about this whole thing: the story.

Bungie, PLEASE put effort into the story of this "expansion;" I don't want another repeat of Halo 3's plot.

I'll be getting this regardless, but I want a good story.

*wild speculation*

What if you're not an ODST, but another Spartan? Weren't a couple still alive somewhere?

For a time, yes. Fred, Will, and Linda.

Could this be the campaign of Halo 3 "Mythic?" Is that how they are getting an extra 500 points bringing the total to 1750?

No I'm not. The terminals were beautifully written, I'm talking about the cut scenes.

Woke up this morning with no expectations, they were thus exceeded, and now they're climbing.

It's going to be difficult to ratchet them down again >_<

I was wondering the same thing. Anyone know the lore of where the other Spartans are at this time in the Halo-timeline?

Expansion vs. New Game:

Would anyone agree that calling this an "expansions" instead of an arcade game allows the file size to over whatever the current limit is for arcade games (assuming it's downloadable)? Seems to me like this is essentially a spin-off game of Halo 3 which is being termed expansion to get around MS XBLA limits. Or perhaps this is their first foray into a DD game? Do they have rules for DD games that aren't considered XBLA?
