I remember the Carbine back in the beta. It was a monster. It did need some nerfing, but Bungle went too far : (

Yeah, I remember that, too. They're still useful in some situations (although I wish that Snowbound still had BRs).

Is it time to reminisce about the beta? Who else remembers the Missile Pod spawning in the inside of the bases on Valhalla? And how nobody hated Snowbound yet? And when Mauler/beatdowns weren't too common?

And you could do the most awesome glitch in Halo 3 ever?
The Valhalla Space Glitch

And when Spikers made me scream with joy. Now they sort of neutralize my excitement, i think they got nerfed. As for the Carbine, that was my favourite weapon in the Beta, I still think it is really good in the final game, but not quite as nasty with the ammount of headshots needed for a kill.

Spikers must have been nerfed, they certainly don't feel as powerful as in the beta. I think they fire slower (the bullets go slower, that is.)

and tripmines were so much fun on valhalla, worth picking up.

The Carbine was a beast, the graphics seem to be a bit more detailed too. =\ (Comparing beta videos to the final game... it seems so.)

And yeah... Valhalla trip mines. Why the hell did Bungie take them out?

Simply tweaking the damage down a little bit would help balance those close combat situations but would make AR starts even more miserable and broken because they're pretty useless as it stands from mid-long range.

There's the sticking point. SMG starts in Halo 2 left players immediately scouring the map for a replacement weapon. The AR addresses that. Players are capable of getting kills if they use it skillfully. If they rush, they might be able to pick up a kill, catching their target off guard, but chances are they'll take significant damage and be taken out by players watching on the peripheral. And on most maps, Battle Rifles are plentiful enough to give players who choose to operate with a little more air between them and their prey a good option to do just that.

Nerfing the AR harms the experience. Powering up the BR harms the experience. This argument continues to boil down to people in favor one of these two weapons over the other wanting their preference to dictate the weapon balance at the expense of overall sandbox fairness.

Lets give StrongSide an AR and spawn him out in the middle of Valhalla and I'll have a BR on Pelican watching him. I'd like to see him skillfully crush me with the mighty range of the Assault Rifle.

There's your answer, Backflip. I mostly quit out of sniper games, so that is why it's so high.

I might start doing this too. When I only get to play 4-5 games a night and half of them are snipers, I'm done.

The Battle Rifle is better at range. Film at eleven.

When they fix the AR spread I might consider switching back to H3 from Ghost Recon 1.

Lets give Tom Clancy an MP5 and spawn him out in the middle of the Baltic States and I'll have a SA80 in Georgia watching him. I'd like to see him skillfully crush me with the mighty range of the MP5.

I agree that neither weapon needs an overall nerf or upgrade. With my proposed changes the AR may be less potent close-range because it'd require aiming, but it'd be a better "all-around starting weapon" if it was a bit better long range.

And even with all my proposed changes, I don't expect nor do I really care much if they get changed. Though players shouldn't have to hunt down a BR, regardless of how easy it is, in order to be useful.

MS customer support wants ME to fax THEM a copy of the 2 year warranty I purchased from MS. :lol (Apparently I'm their secretary, too bad they're not paying me.)

Common guys this shouldn't be that hard or such a pain in my ass.

Also, I miss the beta carbine and Valhalla trip mines dearly.

Talk to Daravon. He's had his warranty issue in limbo since the mid eighties.

The purpose of the AR is to switch it out for a weapon that better suites your situation. It isn't suppose to be an "all-around" weapon.

I switch out that bitch the first second I get for an SMG. SMG + BR is a great combo.

Yup, I'm on month 5 or so of the on-going warranty-I-bought-but-they-have-no-record-of. I am probably seriously going to wind up either having to pay to have it fixed or buy a new system. I really wish arne still worked at MS or someone who works there still posted here, it's pretty ridiculous at this point. After 2 certified letters and a fax they finally acknowledged that they have a copy of my credit card statement which clearly states MS extended warranty for the correct amount, but it's been kicking around in their billing department for like 3 months now since they apparently have no record of it.

Isn't there a free 3 year warranty though?

Oh and where is mah Bungie Podcast? (edit: beaten by a post :p)

Nah, I'd assume maybe the next one won't happen till after SI reveal. Whenever that actually happens.

I was considering quitting until those clowns up at bungle release the Chiron Remake (Chiron TL-5,000).

Your post scares me. :(

Good thing there is an imminent price drop. Perhaps I'll be picking up an arcade unit since my consolde doesn't have HDMI anyway.

I think we'll see one that covers the AU2 and PAX content. I have a
sad
feeling that Superintendent Brothers isn't going to be announced anytime soon. Maybe at X08?

Yeah, I'm betting we wont see Superintendent Brothers till after Gears launches.

I <3 the beta carbine. High Ground + an ample supply of beta carbines = bliss. And is it just me or were the sounds for the carbine deeper in the beta?

Why after? Why not try to divert gamers' attention from Gears to Halo before Gears 2 is released?

Because they did it before with Gears 1 launch.
Just seems the most likely reason to me.

wait:sarcasm. I just got it.... lol.

I'm slow today.

EDIT: Also, if SI reveal is related to the rumors of a "Grittier Squad based shooter in the Halo-verse centered around marines"... I guess that could be quite the fun comparison to read about from game journalist pre-gears2 launch.

EDIT2: Wow, so you weren't being sarcastic.. LOL

Are you serious?

The reason we haven't seen SI yet is because of Microsoft. Why would Microsoft want to divert attention from their biggest game of the year?

Well, from Bungie's standpoint, Gears is probably their biggest competitor, so why not downplay it?

But yeah Microsoft would never allow it.

GC is coming up, Microsoft better show off some new games (like Bungie's next project). I hate how we never see what is to come. It looks like the future for the 360 is shit when we don't see what's coming. >.> Makes me want to go buy a PS3 because they seem to have a solid future lineup. All Microsoft has for me is Gears 2 coming. Argh!

I really hate this decision also. I guess it keeps sales focus on whats right in front of them, being their reasoning. Or maybe they just don't have a solid plan on when is the right time to show a game, they obviously saw the backlash of Sony and the CGI, so maybe they only want to show games that look really close to completion.

Whatever it is, it sucks. And I don't like it.
I'm starting to get worried about Alan Wake, just because we haven't heard/seen a thing from it. Who knows what state it is in.

Bungie is not supporting nor participating in Leipzig in any way, shape, or form.

At this point, not a bone in my body thinks that SI deals is anything of that nature.

That being said, I would completely endorse and buy HELLJUMPERS, a third-person squad-based tactical shooter set during the Human-Covenant War. Particularly if it has visuals and a gameplay framework similar GRAW, the cover mechanics and fluidity of movement from GOW and the general, frenetically close-quarters vibe (ironically) presented in the Halo Wars' computer-generated trailers.

A squad of four ODST being sent into Reach, for example, on specific and incredibly significant missions which support the Spartans and the UNSC fleet would be spectacular. Rather than focus on vehicle warfare and large-scale battles, which were Halo's niche, this game could focus largely on up-close and infantry-centric combat involving the personalities and lives of these four elite ODSTs as they battle against Covenant SpecOps. It also would show the Spartans in a completely different light as well... cyborg giants which have generated some level of hatred and scorn from the ODSTs.

It would be a completely different take than Halo, commercially acceptable and incredibly bad ass enough for anyone who like shooters to be on board. So yeah, it's got my vote.

Is it true that PAX is going to be in NYC next year?

Late to the party on responding to this post, but I don't think that nerfing the AR would harm the experience (although I think powering up the BR would.) I mean, I'd just like it to see a slight damage reduction, or what EazyB proposed. Even with a minor damage reduction it would be a weapon that would give you a chance, but it would also encourage you to try picking up another weapon. I mean, the AR is pretty much the best short-range weapon other than the Shotty and Sword. There's no incentive to pick up a spiker, plasma rifle, or SMG. I slight damage reduction might help to change that, and add a bit of variety.

the disgruntled gamer said:

IIRC, they said it would be on the East Coast in 2010. But I think we can assume that it would be in NYC (which I will definitely be attending).

Woah now, let's not start talking crazy. At very short range, the AR pretty much sucks (unless you get one of those extremely lucky 3 bullet beatdowns). In addition to Shotty/Sword, the Mauler and SMG are equally as good in close combat situations.

I think what excites me about the prospect of a halo squad based, are the things we can't think of and not so much that it's in the halo verse. I can't wait to see what bungie introduces in their next game that becomes that genre standard. My only real wish from bungie is that their next games keeps a solid multiplayer focus/component - something i'd guess we have like a 75% chance of seeing (pulled that straight out of my ass).
What bungie has done with community, sharing, films, forge, playlists are kind of subtle - in that they work so well, you forget that they are a feature. They seem automatic to me.

I can't wait to see that mindset built upon for another IP.

Oh yes, I forgot about the mauler because it's so rare on most maps (thankfully.)

I still think that the ARs much more dangerous than the SMG though. The point is, the AR is a complete monster up close, and it's not hard to aim at all, it takes very little skill to use, and I think that something should be done about that.

Alright I'm pretty sure these guys are up to something. I'm in the lobby for Team Slayer, and get paired with these two guys and another. The game chooses Team Slayer Isolation as the map. NAGARz goes hold on I'm going to hack the system. I'm like wa? He then switches the game TWO times until it gets to BR starts on the Pit. I'm like wtf? I ask them how did they do it and G1ese goes me and Nagarz are hackers.

Oh really. And they reiterated they were hackers after I asked them again.

Now they could've been BSing around but I've NEVER seen somebody able to change the map and gametype and selected the type they wanted.

This is the game in question:

He was probably just fucking with you. Sometimes when the Halo 3 disc gets scratched, it won't load certain maps, which will cause the game to change the map that you're playing on. It could have just been that his disc was really messed up and was screwing around with you. So, when he saw that Isolation popped up, he would've known that his disc couldn't load it and was messing with you.

Or, they were somehow hackers
(in which case, Lukems, I think it's time to lay down the banhammer)

Well, as long as he's forcing the game to skip Isolation and non-BR starts, I say he stays.

We should totally get some customs going tonight. Numbers and I went through probably 5-10 maps that would be great for FFA or Team Slayer. GET YOUR ASSES ONLINE TONIGHT!
