Maybe replace the black abyss with a non-lethal fall into a volcanic lava pit! Deal damage via the lava so as to quickly force players away from the immediate area to avoid death.

Relic was one of the best maps in Halo 2. No one hate on Relic.
While I don't hate Relic, they initially called it a spiritual successor to Death Island, which along with Sidewinder, ties for my all-time favorite map. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed with the utter lack of vertical gameplay. Still, it's a pretty good map in its own right.

It's not. Bungie already debunked that thought. It's a completely new map, though probably inspired by some older maps (like Derelict it seems)

Derelict isn't anywhere near as bad as Midship, so that's fine with me.

Everyone's made some good points that I hadn't seriously considered.

For the most part, I like the idea for players to have a genuine risk/reward situation created by a specific gameplay element in the environment. I think an energy bridge over a chasm and controlled by a switch, not only does this well, but is inherently Halo for a variety of reasons.

I guess with the geometry on the platform the way it is in Halo 2's Relic, we have a hard time thinking about a Warthog being able to turn about and go the opposite direction if they wanted to take the longer, but less risky route. If the lip of the relic was a tad larger, perhaps a turn-about of sorts could be there for spinning a Warthog around to go in the opposite direction easily and maybe if there was a klaxon (like in Containment) which went off indicating a few second period of time before the bridge was going to collapse that would better facilitate that decision.

Other than moving the defenders away from the bridge switch a tad to prevent overt camping, I think the idea of having a switch as the key to an entire strategy is important to the overall concept. Maybe if the switch was in a more neutral location it would work on a differently shaped map. In a Relic remake, the switch would have to be defender-focused because of the layout of the flag. If the flag was recessed in the defender's base (as in most maps), yeah, absolutely, the switch could be more neutral...on Relic, it would have to be near the defensive teams spawn.

Obviously I'm using Relic as an example here (I too dig "flag inching" on most maps). It'd be easier to build a map which was energy bridge-centric from the ground up, but that being said, it would be harder to explain to everyone how and why it might work without having something tangible, like an existing map.

Relic was ok, I really don't like all of the open area around the map though, I remember hosts getting the beam rifle and going to the back and havin a field day because your shots couldn't reach him, meh.

I remember you joined us in Halo 2 for Team Snipers. Players would go behind the broken down ship at the offensive base and sit slightly behind the top point.

I loved that map for Team Snipers, aside from spawning and getting shot in my face. :lol

More maps also need Covenant Towers, which is near the Beam Rifle spawn.

Yea, most of my hate for Relic & Headlong stem from my time in Team Snipers, it was just so easy to make the maps seem broken playing Snipers, or hell, the sniper in general could make most maps broken under certain circumstances. People flying a Banshee to the top of Headlong & Water Works with the sniper was so frustrating.

The gameplay mechanics don't change from any other switch activated map variable object.

Last Resort you can shoot the bridge down, hit the button to open the garage vehicle stoppers.
High Ground Gate
Standoff Side door and windows

It'd be the exact same thing except aesthetically it would easily rival all other push to open map objects.
Actually, they do. On Last Resort, if you unlock the gate, you can drive the warthog through there and tear a team up. Or use other vehicles to do said thing. High Ground is the perfect example of how to center a map around a toggled object. The bridge really doesn't change a whole lot. The quickest and easiest way to do it is to still ramp the warthog off the spire. That's the way the overall map was designed.

Agreed. That was one of the first maps I got out of.

The invisible staircase is surreal and amazing.
My 7-year-old brother told me it was called "The Stairway to Heaven." He showed it to me one time and it was pretty cool.

Marty is going to release a free album of songs expressing his love for John McCain.
I remember in 2004 Marty had this huge blog post about how George W. Bush is a great man and we should all vote for him.

My idol and musical inspiriation was forever tainted. My perception of him has never been the same.

I mean who still liked Bush in 2004? Oh wait, tons of Americans still liked Bush in 2004. Shit.

Lamonster, that's like a death sentence for an already on-the-edge thread.

I've just realized, looking at the list of MP maps, that a lot of my faves were done by Gearbox. I dream about Bungie outsourcing some new DLC maps to them based on Danger Canyon (The Covenant?), Death Island, Gephyrophobia (put the energy bridge here), and Ice Fields.

Gemini may be the worst map every to see a Spartan or an Elite.

Edit: Is Trasher dead or are the rumors True that he will be attending PAX with us?
Eazy kidnapped Trasher, and I had to go rescue him from the evil Elite. But yes, Trasher should be joining us :)

Placing a MP based off The Ark would be magnificent!

It's what Sandtrap should have been.

Heck, maybe a medium sized map off it. That campaign level is the best. :)

The coolest thing in Burial Mounds was to smash a guy near the plasma pistol/ghost rock and he would like fly up and get all blown up into the sky...

First time I saw that I was like woh.

Wow, haha. Yeah, the first time I saw that, my jaw dropped. It was unreal.

I think it would be fun to have a completely wacky map. One that's not constrained by fitting it neatly into the Halo universe. The environment doesn't have to be believable but simply set up for maximum playability and fun.

I shall see make some concept screens once I get home :D

I am playing Halo CE right now, and I would have to say the best cutscene in the entire game would have to be the one in 343 Guilty Spark in which we see what happened to Captain Keyes' mission to retrieve the "cache of covenant weapons" through Private Jenkin's helmet video recordings.

I've just been playing through Sierra 117 and Crows Nest on easy to get my kill count up and those two levels are fun.

At one point a group of those bugger flying things come flying past you trying to escape the nest and you can just stick one and all of them die including the grunts on the ground. I must have killed 20 enemies just with one stick.:D

Indeed, I think it's one of most memorable cutscenes in video game history.

Not sure why I just now realized this - from this week's Update:

It's been hinted and teased in prior updates but I should remind everyone again that "Bungie Day" is rapidly approaching. For the uninitiatied, I am of course referring to July 7th. The day of 7/7 has a lot of special meaning at Bungie, even before it became the day we became an independent developer last year. Seven has shown up in Bungie games for years including a huge amount of references throughout the Halo series. I could rattle of a list but our community has done that and more already. Check out this wiki page for an exhaustive look at the significance of 7.

Their independence wasn't announced until October 31. While we were staring at new wallpaper and gamerpics last year, Bungie was celebrating their Independence from Microsoft. So perfect that they made it happen on 7/7.

Which makes this year the first anniversary of course.

It's not unless all these people I see in these playlists get off MM and get some campaign going.

I expect the biggest pushes to be in the next few days though. I set a 14,000 kill goal for my contribution.

140 million in less than a week? I'm not sure that's possible. :lol
We've been averaging 14.5m kills per day for the past week or so. We're running about two days behind to hit it by the end of Bungie Day.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

I think it's partly due the to fact that not enough people know about the "race" to 7 billion. If Bungie put up an announcement in the matchmaking waiting room thing, I bet thousands would flock to help out the cause.

Yeah, I remember reading that and thinking that 7/7/07 seemed like a much earlier date than when I remembered hearing they became independent. Should've clicked because they didn't announce it until after the release of Halo 3.

If Dax grinds and we get to 7b by the end of Bungie day then Dax gets your recon.

If Bungie were to offer Recon as a prize for the person who gets the 7 billionth kill before 7/7, I'm sure that would get a hell of a lot of people moving.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. If Bungie would plaster "RECON FOR 7 BILLIONTH CAMPAIGN KILL" all over the multiplayer screens, it would be easily possible.

Damn straight it would. :lol

Heck, take it up a notch. If they are on a team, give that team Recon. If they are in a FFA game, give everyone in the game Recon.
