The Official Halo 3 Thread

Yeah, most of my posts from last night seems to be only loosely related to what the mod's complaint and more to do with how much I <3 this thread. I think we should be fine if we do what was previously mentioned and just shy away from the "Hey, _____. Get on" and "Anyone up for some VIP" type thing. I honestly don't think posting that type of thing in the online forum would do you any good but if you want to try then no one is stopping you. Just keep that stuff in posts that contain other content or PMs.

I understand that the online thread should be used for all of the "get on!" type of comments, but talking about played games over there? Like the picture-stories? That's not "scheduling a meeting or tourney." Everything other than "hey guys get on," "I'm on," "when are you getting on," should be over here.
I agree. My idea for the thread would keep the actual matchmaking over in the other thread or in PMs. Like I said, too many times this thread gets clogged up with things that could be said in PMs or through IMs. And it ruins the quality of the thread and discussions. Wrap-up discussions should also go over there or talking about planning for matches like times happens. But just general multiplayer talk should go here. But that's not what the admins want. And, at least to me, in the interest of fairness, I think the Halo 3 community should fall in line with everyone else.

...

Posts like this belong in the Online part. That's what some people are trying to insist.

For campaign, map, weapon, and playlist discussion, feel free.

For meetings, and like others said before about "Hey homie g-funk, where you at?! lolz", go in the other thread. The IM-posts are clogging up the thread and really serve absolutely no purpose since the people who ARE trying to meet up can do so with AIM, MSN, or use the PMs.

Online / Matchup Forum
The place to schedule meetings and tourneys for all online-enabled games

I think as long as we keep the IM stuff outta here then other discussions (including general MP topics) should be fine.

All I remember is Evilore saying a long time ago that ALL multiplayer discussion goes in the Online thread. *shrugs*

I posted in the Online thread but no one was over there :( Then I ventured over to this thread and saw how active it was.

(I actually have the last post in that thread and it's from way back in March :lol)

Hmm.. this is interesting. Just stumbled upon this:

Looks like Bungie's testing out one of the new maps, the placeholder picture is awesome.

alot of peopel tried it, but basically what happened is that the posting in both friends was very minimal, and the online thread was pretty overlooked. as mentioned by the dude above, it doesnt really help the community by breaking it up.

Let us know when the new thread goes up, Ghaleon.

Also, like previously mentioned, I strongly advise we make separate threads for Bungie news (like WWU's that are worth mentioning). We might get new people to read those threads, become a little more informed on the current Halo happenings and then maybe they'll jump into our mega-thread. The more the merrier.

The only problem with that is if anything but only the biggest Bungie news gets posted outside of this thread, then what will this thread turn into? We already go far enough off topic when we actually have newsworthy things to talk about. Take that away from us and this thread could look even worse (not that there wouldn't be a few things left to discuss).

Other threads only seem to attract as much, if not more, trolls as it does "new people".

On that note, I was going to do a Bungie Day 2008 thread. Anyone want to whip up some banners and make if fancy, or should I keep it simple (link to last year's thread, some history on Bungie Day, text of the hints so far)?

I felt a great disturbance in the Covenant, as if billions of grunts suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something awesome has happened.

For some reason all other Halo related threads instantly turn into troll central. At least here everyone loves everyone else. Mostly... well, outside of the constant bickering and drama.

Anyway, I say make the thread, and make it SEXY

Why not just send messages on Xbox LIVE or instant messenger?
There is one simple problem with that: people don't always reply. For example, I sent Ghaleon a message last night to see if he wanted to do some TO/co-op, he doesn't respond. I send YOU a message last night to see if you wanted a fourth in that co-op you were playing, and I receive no response. At least in this thread, I know people are paying attention.

Yet the idea of an all things not online player searching would not solve the problems this thread faces (and the only possible reason why the mods wouldn't just leave us alone):
It's hard to find specific information in a thread with such a variety of content,
People not religiously browsing the thread will miss out on lots of the news,
and newcomers are sometimes treated poorly in such a close community...
I think TDG has already said this, but, just to be sure, I'm going to say it. None of the points you have made above really matter due to one simple fact: anyone who cares about Bungie/Halo 3 news keeps up with this thread. Even the newcomers like myself, Laughtrey, GM Bullfrog, kept up with this thread BEFORE we were accepted into the NeoGaf community. Only regulars post in this thread now; this thread is special because even after nine or so months it remains within the first five pages of GAF and honestly, I can't remember the last time that has happened.

And Eazy, you pinky promised me a match.

Oh, that was me. I was testing out a couple of new nukes and "accidentally" sent a couple to the grunt homeworld. Yeah..., don't tell them it was me.

Make it fancy kthanx. As for a banner, the kind man that is JdFoX187 is making my panorama for me, when it is done, we can use it. I know, personally, that it will look amazing once it is done. You can talk to him about it as to what to place in it, etc.

And just for clarification: have we reached a verdict on what we should/shouldn't discuss?

I'm expecting big news or a big teaser in the BWU. I have a good feeling about it.

For now I think we're just going to refrain from posting things like this:

until/unless we get further clarification.

As for the Bungie day, I'll see if i can throw together a little banner if I find the time. Not making any promises and anyone else is more then welcome to make one.

So I wonder if we are going to get any goodies this weeks BWU?

Remember that Halo 2 to Halo 3 quick and dirty map port thing Mr. Vociferous quoted a few weeks back? Where Bungie would take beloved Halo 2 maps and recreate them in the Halo 3 engine with minimal changes.

If that ever comes to fruition I will send Luke a gift basket.

Dancing Jesus is working on a banner, just FYI so we don't have lots of competing versions.

As for the Update, I'm hoping the AR gets the treatment the BR got last week. It is a weapon of great nuance, and the gulf between skilled users and the average player who ditches it right away is vast. Only a full expose on the bullet spread and speed can bridge this epic span, and unite us behind the USW.

My secret (no longer) theory.

Remember in the Bungie Podcast way back when Harold Ryan said, out of the blue, "The Halo 1 pistol is coming back,"?

Now we have at least one Halo 1 remake announced. Imagine if the Bungie Day announcement was a pair of other Halo 1 remakes, and the Halo 1 pistol was a variant available in Forge in the Classic Map Pack.

[/baseless speculation]

I'd be settled with Halo 2 maps like Terminal, Sanctuary, Beaver Creek, and Relic. <3

I would like Bungie to make more new maps, as well. Remakes can only go so far.

Last response and I'm done with the IM stuff, I promise :lol

You sent us the message when we were in the middle of finishing up Halo. My disc is borked and won't even load the single player missions hardly now. It fucked up the cinematics and I didn't feel like messing with it. So I finally just said to hell with it and went to bed, which was about 10 minutes after you sent the message.

Now, that being said, does anyone know if Microsoft will replace borked Halo 3 discs? There's nothing wrong with the disc drive because all my games load, it's just Halo 3. And there aren't any scratches.

To be fair, of the nine DLC maps known, only three are remakes (and one got a dramatic overhaul). In the shipping 11, one was a remake (and also updated quite a bit). So that's four out of 20 maps remakes. Not a bad ratio. I hope they keep it up.

NOTE: This program covers the Halo 3 Limited Edition Game Disc and Essentials Disc at no charge until 01/02/08.

Looks like you might be SOL. :(

I can't pick just one. I love Valhalla, Rat's Nest and Avalanche so damn much. I just hope we get another asymmetrical BTB map ala Headlong before the Halo 3 DLC dries up.

I would love a Headlong remake, but knowing Bungle's matchmaking, the only thing that would be there would be Team Slayer and Team Slayer Covenant. They really need to utilize these one-sided maps for more objective-based games.

I know things have already been semi-settled about the threads, but I need to add a few things:
I firmly believe that anyone who thinks that making BWU threads and threads for every little piece of news about Halo would raise GAF's awareness about Halo is having delusions of grandeur. Look back at old BWU threads. Who posted in them? The same people who post in this thread now. Anyone who wants Halo news can easily find it on bnet, or can enter this thread. Making a bunch of little threads won't help anyone. Every thread we've made so far about map packs or whatever have been discussed much more thoroughly here, and have been barely posted in, and have been trolled.

So, if anyone wants to waste their time making BWU threads for these non-existant people on GAF who couldn't possibly find out about Halo 3 news without us posting threads about it, no skin off my back, but you're wasting your time. Obviously, Bungie day and map pack threads are fine, but anything beyond that would be a waste.

Overall, some of the replies about this matter have struck me as odd. I don't think anyone has asked us to recreate our community, or to stop straying off-topic, or any of that. In the interest of fairness to other game's fans, we need to put meet-up info in the online thread. We don't need to give our posting habits a complete makeover.

Ranked BTB can still be a workable playlist.

They can't expect the playlist to suddenly pop up with 50,000 players or become amazing. Since they began the playlist with a party restriction, the ranks are spread. Why kill it because of a mistake of that? Give it longer than a week or two weeks to give a serious, considerable consensus. If the playlist drops within the next two or three months, go for it. But a couple weeks? Way too quick.

It's been rounding up 4,000 every time I've been looking. So it is doing much better since the update. Of course, if Bungie advertises it more on their site, it may become more popular. I'm just throwing ideas out here.

Lastly, why doesn't the playlist get updated more? No, I am not talking about inducting Big Team Heavies. I mean changing up equipment, vehicles (you guessed it, putting a Covenant transport vehicle in a Covenant map variant, i.e. a Prowler), or mixing up the weightings. Slayer is fun, but for large battles, I think I speak for the majority when I say objectives are more enjoyable to play than slayer in large maps.

So true. I think the ratio of Team Slayer to CTF/Assault I've played on Last Resort is 10:1, and not because the latter are vetoed. They just don't come up.

I'll tell you:
The Halo 3 AR has a reduced clip compared to the Halo:CE AR. This is balanced by a change in damage done by the weapon. The Halo 3 AR is far more powerful than the Halo:CE AR, and is much more lethal ant medium distances. The Halo 3 AR can be classified as a short to somewhere-between-short-and-medium range weapon, whereas the Halo:CE AR was rightfully known as a pray-and-spray weapon from anywhere beyond short ranges. In addition to this, Ghaleon was making a fairly obvious joke playing off the BR silliness, and you completely missed it.
