The Official Halo 3 Thread

I chose to do Basic Training to get its achievement out the way, and I was limited to Snowbound and Guardian with basic weapons and equipment. From what I saw, it was all just to get you used to basic Halo multiplayer. Once they kick you out for being too good, there's just so much more.

It felt somewhat like walking out of the sewer in Oblivion. This is going to be great.

EDIT - Not sure if you can just go to regular playlists right off the bat.

Also, is anyone else finding the soundtrack disappointing? I mean, it's also quite good, but it feels as if it hides in the background a bit too much. I recognize a lot of Halo 2 themes that have actually been muted for this game. The music in Halo 2 just seemed more powerful and epic.

Soundtrack gets better with every level, give it some time, dark.

as for the gameplay, dunno, everything is fun on COOP with me, first gears now this.

I CANT BELIEVE how freaking quiet the weapons are. when the enemy fires at me, they seem relatively beefy. but coming from my own guns, wow there is some serious sound balance issues here:(

so disappointing. there just isnt any oomph to them at all. completely unsatisfying. both halo 1&2 got this aspect so right but here i feel like i'm playing with pea shooters.

everything else about the game is incredible for me, but just this aspect is really bothering me. cant believe they got this wrong. and its not my setup either, i play on a nice yamaha 5.1 and most games actually get this aspect right. cant believe halo 3 didnt :( :( :(

To that I say here, here. I switched my pre-order from Overnight to 2-Day shipping because why spend the extra money when my pre-orders of Bioshock and Madden 08 arrived on launch day with 2nd Day Shipping.

Well, then Amazon.com didn't ship out my copy until yesterday.

(sigh)
well they shipped my copy out yesterday, too.

and i have one day shipping

FUCK YOU AMAZON SJDLGKMsdf.,bmadfg;.nm,a;knlag

my copy is still in texas
and i'm in what
fucking california

i'm about to just drive out and buy myself a stupid fucking copy >:(

First Impressions, after completing the first four chapters:
1. WOW!
2. I'VE MISSED YOU, HALO!
3. Screw trilogies, I want this like Mario Party games (ok, that's an exaggeration.) Gimme more sequels! Get cracking Bungie, I want Halo 4, not some bastard child of a different developer. ;)
4. Not a story spoiler:
The first time I downed a Phantom was really really exciting.

After playing more than 3 hours, I'm really loving it. The gameplay is just very fun. Screw innovation and trying to change what works for the sake of reviewers' criticisms. Halo's shooting mechanics simply work perfectly for consoles, and when combined with the outstanding AI, Sound, and Music, it's absolute bliss. I also don't buy it for an instant that it's 'outdated' or 'not as good' as PC shooters, having played plenty of them myself. It's definitely simpler, but delivers in the 'fun' department in spades.

The Theater mode is great too. I spent a bit of time playing with it (check my profile at bungie.net - IJoel, for a few screenshots) and was amazed at how polished it is.

Re: music, it's entirely too muted for my taste, along with the weapon sounds. I really wish I could control the individual volume of sounds, dailog, and music, because I could crank music and weapon sounds, WAYYYY up.

The actual music though is fooging epic. A couple of scenes the music got me pumped in ways Halo 2 never did. especially (level 5 spoilers)
when the flood came to town

You know, I might be the ONLY one who feels this way, but as of completing chapter 3 I actually find myself preferring the single player campaign of Halo 2. Seriously. That may change over time, of course, but it's a tad disappointing thus far. I mean, the game is incredible, but something feels off. Perhaps it's the environments. I don't know how much I care for them yet. The HDR lighting is also really nice, but the contrasts between light and dark often make it feel as if you aren't seeing the full battlefield.

Also, is anyone else finding the soundtrack disappointing? I mean, it's also quite good, but it feels as if it hides in the background a bit too much. I recognize a lot of Halo 2 themes that have actually been muted for this game. The music in Halo 2 just seemed more powerful and epic.

I think the game will require a lot of playtime before I can pass judgment. After all, I didn't really take to Gears until halfway through chapter 2. Sometimes a hyped game requires time to spread its wings...

It gets much better after Lever 3. Level 1 and 3 are pretty good, but 2 is really bad imo. 4,6,7 are ace.

shooting peas?
Like the sound of a single SMG on H2?,
btw even the H2 weapons sounds a lot more weak than H1 I can't believe that is even worse in H3 :(

At least your copies have been shipped. I ordered 2-day shipping on it months ago, and it has yet to even leave Amazon. I really didn't care if I had the game at midnight the first day, but at this rate I'll be waiting till the weekend to check it out.

What's the best way to take down the Brutes?

So far I've been using lots of grenade and the shotgun, although it's hard to get in close to use it. What's the best medium range gun to use? They all seem kind of ineffective.

I second this question...I don't think this is a spoiler..

how do i get out of that mass area of brutes? best tactics to use?

Wait, you get an achievement for doing basic training? I just went straight to the playlists. I hope I didn't miss an achievement.

EDIT - Just checked, no you don't have to play basic training to get the basic training achievement. I got that last night after winning getting 5exp playing team slayer.

You'd think as high as the pre-orders have been running on Amazon they would've figured this stuff out beforehand. I'll still pre-order games from them, but someone clearly wasn't ready for the biggest video game launch EVER EVER

I'm sure this may have been covered in the thread but honestly, nobody can go through all this. I'm in the UK, and suddenly have a huge urge to buy the Legendary Edition of Halo 3. Is there any way of getting it if you haven't pre ordered, or is it a truly limited edition? Anybody work at some stores that may know what stock is like? I've heard it's sold out but...come on. Let's have hope.

For those who have finished the game, just my cons and pros so far:

Cons:
- Bad aliasing issues, more noticeable the simpler the geometry gets, the clean aesthetics suffer from it. The image is relatively unclean.
- Graphics in general are disappointing for a next gen upgrade. Washed out low poly faces in 2007? Animation could have been better, the Scarabs for example seem to only have a few keyframes for their walking animation and assets in general aren't necessarily all that good for a console showcase title releasing almost two years after launch.
- More A.I issues than before? Drivers can't really handle themselves, Brutes throw items but don't really use them. Also, it's true, Elites>Brutes in terms of fun at least.
- Singleplayer campaign is actually the least flawed one so far but it's also the most boring one. Halo 2 was flawed but it was experimental. This doesn't feel like a full upgrade, it feels 95% like it's predecessor which is not what I hoped for in a generational leap.
- Not that many new musical additions as Halo 2 enjoyed.
- Too little time is spent on the plot. Felt like they resolved everything too quickly. Also, I felt that the intro was the best scene of them all. While animation is improved they weren't on a good level previously, it's starting to show now.
- Making of Documentary not nearly as good as last time.

Pros:
- The menus are absolutely fantastic. How everything quickly slips in and out, everything has Live elements in mind and how levels actually start pre-loading before you start them up. It's very easy to reach everything and it's smooth as hell. New standard.
- Theater mode, Replays and file sharing. I'm probably going to spend a ton of time on this one. To me, this is the greatest addition to the game. It offers a highly interesting element that is also (partly) a passive element which your ordinary games doesn't usually offer. I love to check stuff out and it's easy, and it's fast and it's slick. And it could be pretty much anything really. I'm expecting to see some crazy things here. There are games with better editing tools and there are games who have had this feature since the 20th century but it has never been this easy. New Standard.
- Forge. The tools themselves aren't specially new, we've had stuff like this in games like Timesplitters and possibly to a even greater detail. What makes this something fresh though is that it's actually live manipulation in a multiplayer environment and you can share the setup with anyone. That brings it into a totally new dimension. New Standard.
- Stat tracking. What can I possibly say? I can't imagine where I would start to create such a complex system and how it all ties into Bungie.net. And I can't imagine the crazy servers and databanks they have running these things. Also, I believe Bungie.net overall is the best tie in site for any videogame, including those of Blizzard/Wow (maybe not as much content but more interconnectivity). All the medals, skulls, achievements.. it's brings a lot of value to the game. New standard.
- Core gameplay mechanics are largely unchanged but they still feel good. The best balanced controls of any console shooter. I feel that this is the last possible iteration though before it gets too old and I think they need to upp the ante next time in regards to animation, physics and destruction. But it's still good right now.
- The music is still excellent. While there isn't as much new stuff as I would like, the few new cues and beats are pretty cool and they add to the already great melodies from the previous games. Also, sound effects in general are very good and the distant gunfire effect is a small touch of genius.
- I like the weapon additions in this game quite better than those of Halo 2. Flamethrower, turrets, spike pistols, spike grenades, also the vehicles as well as the deployable items. I think the game has gone beyond the call of duty in regards to the amount of new tools it's providing as a sequel and I feel most of them are really good additions as well.

I think it IS your setup. Weapon sounds take precedence over most of the rest of the balance. Try tinkering with your settings, because what you're describing is odd.

After 2hrs [Have to go to class now :(]

Played and beat the first 2 campaign missions (heroic), enjoyed them both although they seemed a bit short.

MP I only played 1 ranked match (FFA slayer), and it was smooth and a ton of fun (and I won, yay)

Great stuff sofar

i finished the fight. cleared mission on heroic 7 before i gave up and put that shit on normal (yeah i'm a bitch, whatever).

ending spoilers

i was so fucking pissed at first because i thought they weren't even going to explain what happened to MC and just leave it open to interpretation, thank god i was wrong. what an ending :) tbh though i was SURE MC was not gonna live, what a pleasant surprise.

What equipment do you have, indoors or outdoors? surrounded or on the approach? Do you have a vehicle?

The conflicts in this game are so rich, that question cannot be answered without more details.

one on one with brutes, I try to mix things up. Plasma rifle, switch to the battle rifle to take off the armor. Needler is HUGE against low level brutes, it will tear apart specialists and infantry brutes in no time. Captains and Chieftans like to dodge and weave though, those take some more strategy.

Once again, angles are important, the AI in halo doesn't "Cheat", if you can get a rock between you, try going the other way, rather than pop at the same place. Sometimes you can get a quick melee before they catch you in their peripheral vision.

Don't understimate your marines, brutes will stand and deliver against marines, a perfect chance to lob a grenade or get to that turret.

I am in the same boat, brother. I've ordered the tin from ShopTo, but still want a Legendary.

I've been told by my local GAME, that they took all pre-orders for the Legendary in May, but if I turn up at 8am tomorrow (not doing a midnight launch), I may get one (doesn't make any sense to me!). I notice PC World have got it on their website as pre-order, so I will be F5-ing that bitch at midnight in the hope that the Collect@Store option becomes available so I'll be able to reserve one at my local store.

Other than that, I'm open to suggestions like yourself.

It's the one area indoors where the marines dont follow you in, and lots of brutes come out "Kill the demon!" type of deal. Early in the game still.

The ending was awesome, perfect way to end the series.

I'm really enjoying multiplayer again this time around. And since I was still playing Matchmaking before the release date (Monday night around 8:30ish) everyone online was actually cool and in team objective I had some really good teammates. It's amazing how much fun objective based games can be when you have good teamates.

So far in matchmaking, after 8 games of team slayer and two of team objective, i'm 10-0. I'm pretty happy about that, already at a rank of lieutenant. Luke also owes me a steak, so that's cool:)

I'm due in uni at 9:30 tomorrow, I may get the train there at 8:30 and just see if any of the stores have it in. I'm buying it in-store either way so I have nothing to lose. Other than perhaps the risk that carrying a huge Halo 3 box around uni all day may result in being attacked and somebody stealing it.

I'm on the second level and I'm definitely impressed. The small touches that they've added are just...Awesome. Heroic by yourself isn't very easy as most people are claiming. It's pretty challenging. Sort of spoilerific impressions.

- Grunts are vastly improved. The methane tanks bursting is an awesome touch that I've wanted since reading the books, and the double grenade suicide thing is great.
- Brutes are obviously vastly improved, and Jackals now...God damn. I hate Jackals even more.
- Opening cut scene was awesome...Just awesome. Set a great tone.

Back to the game!

on the second level, the baracks? if so, use the side passageways to seperate and melee. There are some one way shields, and portable grav lifts there too, be sure to use that. I had to PP/BR the chieftan, but I managed to take his invincibility

WHY IS THERE NO SOUND OPTION?
WHY IS THERE NO SOUND OPTION?
WHY IS THERE NO SOUND OPTION?
WHY IS THERE NO SOUND OPTION?

Did the internet as a whole fucking forget to bitch about this? The music is so goddamn loud it drowns out everything else, it's near impossible to hear anyone talk.

Ahem.

Halo 3 is the most goddamn satisfying gaming experience I've ever had. My saved films apparantly add up to
9 and a half hours
on heroic, but I totally scrubbed it up on the first level getting acclimated with the game. Also I had an issue with one of the later levels and not registering checkpoints, meaning lots and lots of long restarts.

I've got one question right away before I start babbling. Story spoilers.
Why the fuck did I just activate the Halo? I mean... really. Why the fuck did I just do that? I guess there might have been a cutscene that was talking about where the portal took them and it was safe to fire it that I wasn't really paying attention to (See above? Probably not related, but maybe!)... And uh, why would Gravemind follow into the portal without first launching tons and tons of flood all over fucking everywhere?

Gadfly said:

Yeah I've had no lag whatsoever in any of the (6) multiplayer games I've played. In one of them, we did have some brownouts or whatever you call it when it dips to the Players List.

Story Spoiler:
After you first hit the ark, one of your marines will say something along the lines of, 'Whoa look at that!'. If you look up you'll see that the entire milky way galaxy can be seen in the sky. A halo's blast radius only covers a portion of the galaxy, only activating the entire halo network could wipe out everything in the galaxy. So the ark is to far away to be affected by the blast radius of the halo network, and vice versa. Also, the halo that you activate is not yet complete.

MrSingh and I just finished the fight tonight. OH NOES ENDING SPOILERS HOOOOO

I was pissed off at the ending, but then the REAL ending played and I thought it was tremendously good. Everything comes back full circle and Chief's in cryo until the next time the world needs a hero.

Final impressions

+Great gameplay and mission structure
+Pacing is near perfect
+Tons of "Oh my GOD" moments of insane scale
+Control dead on
+It brings back the fun of Halo 1
+Co-op RULES!

-Bungie can't do skin -- human character models look really poor, god just look at the side of Johnson's head, the UVs are a mess. (Aliens + Chief look great though) I'm almost glad that ENDING SPOILER
Chief never takes off his helmet.
-Cutscene animation ranges from acceptable to really janky. I understand why Bungie does everything by hand -- that's their style -- but a lot of it really, REALLY needs work.
-In-game animation transitions are a bit jarring, I don't know if it's done for speed or it's leftover code or what (still, there are a bagillion dudes running around)
+But Chief's foot placement /IK is great

I give this game a Rock out of Awesome!

I only had the chance to play the first level (stupid work!) but I am really impressed with the game. I played Halo 1 way back when it was first released, and barely touched Halo 2 outside of playing multiplayer at a friend's house, so I am kind of a Halo noob, and I think that has increased my enjoyment of the game quite a bit. Being able to go in with no expectations has really made me appreciate the cool little details in the game I might have glossed over otherwise. I think the thing that impresses me the most right now is the chatter between the troops in your squad and the enemy grunts. It really helps immerse you in the game world. I also love the art style. It's slightly cartoony and stylized which I like. It keeps it from looking like all the humans in your squad are creepy Poseur3D models, which is a problem I have with the graphics in a lot of other modern FPS. Anyway, it's exciting to play a game this epic. I can't wait for work to end so I can play more.
