There is a simple way of figuring out the answer to your question: read the books.

If I want to see sci-fi shit I'll watch Star Wars because that shit is legendary.

True. Although the whole idea of novels based on the Halo universe seems a bit nutty to me. I mean the game is one of the fastest-paced FPS games in existence. How do you iterate that sense in a novel?

I know that the books are primarily about fleshing out the story, but how do they handle action sequences? Would be very difficult if they stayed true to the games in describing battles.

The authors aren't too bad at describing action scenes, but by the time I got Contact Harvest, I grew bored of the Halo novels. (I have Contact Harvest and don't plan to finish)

I really can't imagine a Halo MMO. It's pretty easy to see why it couldn't be an MMORPG with leveling and such and classes would also be weird and very not-Halo. Would the factions consist of Spartans vs. Elites/Brutes and what would the PvE be if there were any? It just doesn't seem like a good fit.

What I can imagine is a larger scale MP mode like Battlefield's were teams of 32 could square off against each other on larger version of Valhalla.

The game could be continuously balanced to keep the human-covenant war balanced. It would also provide for some pretty awesome events, like massive military operations.

As I said, it's fairly idealistic, and it won't be possible for many years. But it would be beautiful.

I wouldn't go that far, but I think it's safe to say that mods don't really monitor this thread as much as they do some of the others.

No, but when a thread is around as long as this one has, and more-or-less self-moderates, there's no need to check on it regularly. When something really bad is going on, someone usually PMs someone important to get shit settled. But usually stuff just works itself out.

Plus we seemingly have some (quickly running out) trust from the moderators since the Halo threads used to be calm, happy, peaceful places.

Maybe we should move on from discussing the thread itself though, since that's when things tend to take a turn for the worse.

Thel 'Vadam, the main Elite character who began to understand humanity and even respect them a little... he's the Arbiter. That's what was being implied at the end when he said he'd been assigned to the Fleet of Particular Justice and that perhaps one day he could "rise even higher," or whatever.

I actually bought the books expecting, from the response from GAF, some awesome reading during the winter break. Well, 100 pages in the shit is really corny. Really REALLY corny. Like the whole King of the Hill part where they meet John for the first time made me not want to read the book anymore. /rant

Some parts especially in the beginning are a little corny, like that king of the hill part, but I stuck with it and somewhere around where they start enhancing the Spartans genetically I was sold. It gets a lot better as it goes on imo.
If you like Sci-Fi and the Halo universe I don't see how you can't like The Fall of Reach and First Strike.

I haven't read the latest books though, I'm not that interested in all the backstory and stuff..
I want to have the continuation of the story, and especially when it comes to

The Sgt.Johnson book I would probably have read if not for my anger at Bungie being stupid enough to kill off that character in H3. It made me lose all interest in his backstory since it all came to nothing anyway, despite First Strike setting up for him possibly being absolutely vital for defeating the Flood.

I hope it wasn't anything I said that made you fork over that money. I've tried to remain neutral relatively speaking about the Halo ancillaries within the context of what they are -- supplemental and individual extensions of the core fiction targeted to a specific market demographic. I read a lot, especially lately: Tolkien, Herbert, Follet, Crichton, King and I'm currently on McCarthy's "The Road" which is an amazing piece of literature -- so I hope I'm not being pigeonholed into something I'm not.

I mean, it's pretty crystal clear who the Halo books are being written for. I'm not judging the quality of the novels themselves, they are what they are. Nylund, Dietz and Buckell are far more accomplished than I am or likely will ever be, but they wrote these books with a specific fan in mind (the largest cross-section of the Halo fan base) and it's pretty clear that they hit their target right on the nose judging by the sales.

And I'd argue vehemently that Halo's main narrative and elements like the terminals are absolutely worth the pandering offered by blogs like the one I write for. I honestly don't think that many of us would be here if that hadn't been the case from day one.

That was an awesome game. I managed to get 29 on Standoff! with our party, ONE AWAY! So I felt bad and went into Social Skirmish and pulled it off myself (Down 2 players to boot!)

Basically, the vast majority of the program's subjects are MIA or KIA. Some are alive but in no position to fight, if I recall correctly nearly all were lost in the Human-Covenant war.
