Yeah, it's a biggen. I'd recommend taking a look at some of Stephen Loftus' stuff on HBO. Dude's a genius and a lot of my own understanding of scale in the Halo universe has come from his work researching Halo 1 & 2.

Woulda been neat if they were able to communicate the scale in the game.
I think that's why many people liked the Covenant ship going overhead during one of the missions on Halo 3 campaign. Kind of gave us an "Oh, shit!" moment.

Shit that part where that one ship dropped the tanks... was like "oh fuck" first time it happened. One of my favorite parts of the SP campaign. Can't remember the name of the map, was the desert tho.

That moment still surprises me; good stuff. The only other moments that really "wowed me" in the campaign were scarab encounters, dropping off the vehicles, and fighting alongside the flood. The sandbox, non-scripted directions Halo takes makes it a blast to play through multiple times but it's kinda lacked the epic moments most scripted games can more easily display.

Also when Forward Unto Dawn comes gliding in ... the blast of air pushes you back. That was cool.

Yeah, that's what I meant by vehicle drop off. Scared the shit out of me the first time it happened because I was looking the other way and panned to see that gigantic ship fly in once I started blowing over. Want more moments like that in ODST but with the hub world set up it'll be harder to do it. Those flashback gameplay moments could have some amazing setpieces though.

Some guy online sent me a message saying he wants me to file a complaint against him. WTF that about?
Probably wanted you to file a gamertag complaint so that he can change his name for free.

And everyone should do the same for Nutter who wants to change his GT.

Yes I want to go from NutterStillAFK to NutterSadFace.

It's almost believable, maybe without the huge orange swords and the girl in the backround with glowing stuff all over her.

A Halo mmo would have to not turn itself into a Halo fan fiction like that one looked like it was going to.

ok, i'm travelling home today so I won't be in my house til like 10pm eastern. I'll probably be on Halo at or around midnight...and thats all maybe, don't count on me being on. I don't wanna disappoint. Instead, I'd rather be a pleasant surprise. haha

Thursday night we should be all up in Halo, I know I will be. First day off in two weeks!

Also who gives a fuck how big The Ark is.

There's also this Halo "mesh" I found from this website. It can be downloaded here, but you have to post six times first to be able to download it. If anybody is willing to do it, let me know how it is.

Yeah, I don't really get why a bunch of people get so enveloped in the Halo world, enough to research the games like Voc was talking about. Wouldn't it make more sense to, you know, play the game with your spare time instead of researching it?

I would agree, but Bungie has ensured there is plenty of lore, with novels and such. Gives fans options to dig deep on their own time if they want.

I don't any issues with it.

Now, if Halo was confined to just video games, then, well, he'd be a nut job.

True. Although the whole idea of novels based on the Halo universe seems a bit nutty to me. I mean the game is one of the fastest-paced FPS games in existence. How do you iterate that sense in a novel?

"Chief picked up an Assault Rifle. He fired it at the Elite. 3 bullets and a beatdown was all it took. Then he turned and tossed a grenade at some Brutes."

I know that the books are primarily about fleshing out the story, but how do they handle action sequences? Would be very difficult if they stayed true to the games in describing battles.

You don't read many books do you?

I haven't read the Halo books personally. Every time I tried to pick them up... well I don't want to offend anyone but they weren't for me. However, there are plenty of books that relay action sequences very well, better than movies or games.

Easy, they don't try to emulate the feel of the video game. It would be pointless. It would be as stupid as you suggested.

"The chief teabagged a downed brute whilst lobbing a plasma grenade at another's face."

Nah, wouldn't sell.

Besides, the writers do a good job of creating a good sci-fi atmosphere that feels instantly familiar to anyone that has played the game and is aware of the main story in all three. The experience is million miles from playing the games though.

Also, to note, the books aren't restricted to gameplay mechanics. People and sequences are depicted as they would happen, for example, the chief, if the story warranted, could pick up a piece of scrap metal and beat someone senseless, something impossible to depict whilst playing the games.

Thats a shitty example by the way.

I think it just comes down to I'm not really huge on Sci-Fi. I think thats the main reason I like Halo. To me its just a red team vs's a blue team with the "Halo" worlds physics, which I prefer to the other game physics like GoW (No Jumping = Fuck that) Two teams facing off with a set of rules that I enjoy. Unreal Tournament recreates this pretty well also with minimal story introduction, the whole Tournament fighting for honor, for money for whatever reason in an arena.

If I want to see sci-fi shit I'll watch Star Wars because that shit is legendary.

I actually bought the books expecting, from the response from GAF, some awesome reading during the winter break. Well, 100 pages in the shit is really corny. Really REALLY corny. Like the whole King of the Hill part where they meet John for the first time made me not want to read the book anymore. /rant

I drove to the bookstore yesterday looking for a good sci-fi novel to read. I first grabbed Ender's Game, then the vibrant cover of Childhood's End caught my eye. I couldn't decide between the two so I put both down and walked over the magazine section (EGM RIP. Never Duplicated. I've donated $70 so far). As I strode through the aisles of Barnes and Noble a flimsy, thin book caught my eye. It was nestled between the children's section and the table of book recommendations for early teens. The Cole Protocol. At the top of the cover stood a large, beautiful Halo logo. Beneath laid the name of one of the great writers of my generation; Tobias S. Buckell.

In between staring at Cortana's beautifully modeled ass cheeks and shooting purple needles at giant space monkeys with hammers I had wondered about the lore of this beautiful universe. Imagine my delight when I learned it was nonsensical z-grade sci-fi with words like "covenant" thrown in to make the tale canon.

Out beyond the Outer Colonies lies the planet Hesiod, a gas giant surrounded by a vast asteroid belt. As the Covenant continues to glass the human occupied planets near Hesiod, many of the survivors, helped by a stronghold of human Insurrectionists, are fleeing to the asteroid belt for refuge. They have transformed the tumbling satellites into a tenuous, yet ingenious, settlement known as The Rubble–and have come face-to-face with a Covenant settlement of Kig-Yar . . . yet somehow survived.

By the time I reached the end of the synopsis I could hardly move. This was the novel-- nay, the pinnacle of human creativity that I will see in my lifetime. I bought 12 so I'll have a few to bring to PAX this year.

Yea I just couldn't get into the books. I'm gonna give it another shot though because I kind of like Sci-Fi. I fuckin loved the Mass Effect book. Which is funny because I finished the book but not the game.

It was confirmed to be Crow's Nest. IIRC, the hallway the Hammer Chieftain is in.

They confirmed when the Et Tu, Brute? vidoc went up that the scene in the hallway was where the screen was taken.
I remember people complaining about the level, and then Frankie said it was just a sandbox testing level or something. What happened to that? Heh... or were people complaining about a different part in the video? My memory fails me.

Voc is disturbed, just ignore him.

Ram is onto something. My ignore list is growing.

Despite what people are saying, Halo is a piece of fiction, not just a game. The fiction originating from a game dosen't act as a detriment. The fiction is compelling to some. To me, it's some of the best SCI-FI I've seen. I've read the first book and it was pretty good. The origin story is very cool.

Anyone who likes the Halo story should watch Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis.

I have the same problem with fantasy-fiction. Lord of the Rings and WOW have a crazy following. The movies are cool. But I still can't get over the whole riding horses, long beards, elves, dwarfs and hobbits, ferries, bow and arrows, etc. It's just lame to me.

Um, Halo is one of the slower MP shooters out there.
When I first started playing Halo, that was the only thing I really disliked about it. I was into Timesplitters and Unreal Tournament, both of which play at a much, much faster pace than Halo. It was kind of a difficult adjustment.

The Halo Universe is pretty interesting to me, though the books aren't my cup of tea.

But for fuck's sakes, people can do what they want with their free time. Why don't you condescending assholes be condescending elsewhere. Berate people for donating money to whatever and whoever they feel like donating to, perhaps.

Yep. It's not even particularly fast-paced when you just look at console shooters.

Absolutely. I kind of wish that it could be like a regular Halo game but with a ton of people, money as a reward for kills, and military bases serving as the cities.

You could form clans and even armies, have massive battles or small skirmishes between clans, you could even be a lone sniper who picks off people for fun and game. Over time, an in-game economy and balance of power would form...

The technology is years away, but it's fun to think about.

Did you guys know that Halo was originally supposed to be an RTS game?

Yeah, and funny how when a Halo RTS does come out, at the peak of Halo's popularity (so far), Bungie aren't developing it, and one's that are are losing their jobs.

Funny world.

I really can't imagine a Halo MMO. It's pretty easy to see why it couldn't be an MMORPG with leveling and such and classes would also be weird and very not-Halo. Would the factions consist of Spartans vs. Elites/Brutes and what would the PvE be if there were any? It just doesn't seem like a good fit.

What I can imagine is a larger scale MP mode like Battlefield's were teams of 32 could square off against each other on larger version of Valhalla.

I guess it depends on the gametype that you're playing. Obviously some gametypes are going to be slower than others, but I'd say that Halo is fairly quick-paced.

Certain gametypes on certain smaller maps can be pretty fast paced (especially in MLG), but by and large Halo 3 is pretty moderate in its pace as a multiplayer game. There are plenty that are quicker.
