Switch is nearing its 6th month of release, come post your thoughts and impressions!

I actually found one at the local Walmart today.

The funny thing is I have GCU so I just have a Switch now, I still have to run down to Best Buy to actually buy a game for it.

Solid console, and I really love the concept.

Needs more single player content that aren't just quick indies. Thankfully Mario SRPG is coming this week.

Also I'd love a game to come back to daily that isn't just Splat 2 right now for mp. Something like Animal Crossing or Stardew where you invest a tad each day.

It's only been 6 months though, and Zelda is my GOTY.

I was playing Splatoon 2 handheld, while my friend was playing on the console, some Salmon Run.

And the quality of this system, in a mobile device, but also how damn good it looks on a giant screen.

Really struck me. Floored with this system.

Thinking about getting a Switch soon. Is the "amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Nintendo Switch 2017" still considered the best screen protector?

Anything else I should know in advance?

I like mine, best screen protector i've ever owned for any device, actually makes the touch screen more pleasant to use as well. Other than that, be sure not to hold the system from just one side as it puts pressure on the system and can break it. Most wouldn't do that but, apparently a couple have.

I haven't even turned my launch unit on since I beat Zelda. Being a Wii U owner I had no desire to buy Mario Kart again, Splatoon doesn't do it for me, and ARMs simply isn't my style.

Looking forward to Mario and Metroid. Not bothered though, I knew what I was getting into. I just wanted the new Nintendo machine to play my favorite Nintendo games

Overall it's a great system with a ton of potential but the games aren't there yet. eShop is barren unless you like older stuff, when the original Nindie's list finally comes out it will be better.

Needs Virtual Console SO BADLY...

As far as games I own:

1. Zelda - A+++++ game. Not much to say. Game is incredible.

2. Mario Kart - Owned it on Wii U, played a ton on Wii U. This looks better and battle mode is a welcome addition but I've done everything and can't bring myself to do it again.

3.Overcooked - Amazing game. Performance issues are easy to overlook when you're having as much fun as you do in this game. would love DLC.

4. Snipperclips - Pretty fun. Novelty wears off somewhat quick.

5. 1-2-Switch - Terrible game. Has a decent novelty factor for about 20 minutes and then there's no reason to ever bring it out again. My only real regret.

6. World of Goo - Classic. But it's old... I bought because I was bored one night.

7. Whatever that other Corporation game is by the world of goo - realized quickly that I didn't care.

I think that's all i own right now. No interest in ARMS, I enjoyed single player of Splatoon 1 but not paying $60 for 4 hours of content.

Mario and Rabbids looks cool but Im' not much of an XCOM-type fan. Mario Odyssey will be great I'm sure.

I just want VC, Steamworld, WarGroove and Stardew...ASAP.

I've had one since launch, and I love this thing. I own Zelda, 1-2-Switch, Bomberman, Snipperclips, MK8D, ARMS, and Splatoon 2, and have probably put in a combined 180 hours or so--which is easily the most time I've spent with a single console over six months with the exception of when mainline 3D Mario releases.

I think the ease of use of the Switch is what keeps me coming back. I'm up and running with a game just about as fast as I can grab a controller--compare that with the Wii U, with its absurd load times and OS's tendency to grind to a halt. You know, at the Apple Keynotes, when Tim Cook brags that people love to use their iPhones? That's how I feel about Switch, and I suspect Switch has very high customer satisfaction ratings. Almost every day, I feel like playing something, almost just for the sake of using this device, and those modular Joy Con (not to mention the superb games).

And frankly, the novelty of switching seamlessly from TV to handheld to tabletop mode still hasn't worn off (after six months, doubtful that it's just shiny new hardware fascination), so I find myself actively playing in the latter two modes even when I could easily dock it.

For the rest of the year, I think all that's left for day one purchasing is Super Mario Odyssey; I'll pick up Rabbids (dependent on reviews) and Xenoblade once I can get them for sub-$30 shipped each.

Edit: Oh, and one more thing: I love that the NX hype of Summer 2016 was totally worth it. Rarely has Nintendo lived up to the hype in such a way.

My only problems with it:
- I have yet to see a game whose graphics are significantly better than Wii U-level, and the system is also meant to be a Wii U successor.
- The Joy-Cons are less comfortable than the Wii U GamePad.
- Badly needs apps and an Internet browser.

That aside, it's a success on every level. I'm relieved to see it being so well-received and popular out of the gate. It's Nintendo at their best - doing something different and doing it right.

Nice thread, like the idea and good work sharing screenshots and thoughts.

Mine wont go into that detail, but here is a summary for me.
Firstly, on a hardware level:

+ Love the weight and feel of the system handheld, play 99% in HH mode.
+ Beautiful screen!
+ Joycons feel quality
- No Dpad

Software:

+- Finished Zelda on Wii U, did not get it for Switch
+- Love the concept of Splatoon, suck at shooters when not using keyboard/mouse
+ Quality neogeo ports, saved my interest in the console at this time
+ Downloadable demos for Nintendo's (and others) games
+- indie titles
- No Virtual Console
- Lack of premium 3rd party titles so far
- Wheres Netflix, Youtube, Internet browser...?

Thats my experience so far.

I enjoy mine a lot, but man oh man it hurts my hands in handheld mode. If someone made a grip that felt like the Pro controller I'd be thrilled.

ARMS is my favorite game in years. The character design and soundtrack are on an entirely different level from anything else out there. That is the only game that has really been a standout on the console for me but totally worth the price of admission.

I mostly play docked with the Pro Controller but the handful of times I have played it portable it has been perfect.

Just wish it was a full blown console instead, I don't bring mine with me after a long and short trip. That thing isn't a portable system seriously.

Zelda was incredible and I stopped at 60 hours - will go back to it once done with Yakuza and FF12. Had lots of fun with SF2.

As for the rest, not terribly impressed. I had a WiiU so the remakes of Splatoon and MK8 do nothing for me; Arms is dull and the rest is forgettable.

If it was my only console I would be very happy, as this is as good as a launch year lineup gets. But with Sonic and Puyo much cheaper on competitors, and time sinks like Persona, Yakuza, FF12, Tekken, new Metroid, it's hard to find time for the Switch.

Can't wait for Mario Odyssey :)

Console : 8.5/10
UI: 9/10
Features (apps/themes/etc): 5/10
1st Party Games: 9/10
3rd Party Games: 7/10

Overall, it's a great console, and ever since I bought it back in March, It's been hard to go back to my 3DS (Which, after looking through my play time data, i put in well over 2000 hours of gametime since i bought back in 2012).

As a fan of Nintendo games, it's a dream come true. As for third parties, the indies are great, and I'll gladly double dip for the many indies I already bought for the 3DS/Steam/PS4. It's been said by many before, but the Switch/PS4, and even a good PC is everything you will ever need for gaming from here on out, at least imho.

You are missing out dude.

I think Overwatch has been killing my desire to play other stuff. I did get around to finishing Mafia 3 in June. Undertale on PS4 and trying to get into Lost Legacy now. Played a lot of Crash and realized I hated it heh.

I played a few hours of Zelda after best beating it on WiiU. Ditto for Mario Kart as I also got my fill of that last gen but a friend was nice enough to gift it to me

Also played a few hours of Splatoon 2, I didn't care for the first one but that was mostly due to the gamepad. The 2nd is much more enjoyable since I'm using a Pro Controller but honestly multiplayer stuff just isn't really my jam

So suffice to say I've barely used my Switch and I'm just desperately waiting for Mario Odyssey to release. Nintendo has had some good games this year but i feel like too many are ports or competitive/MP focused. I want more meaty single player stuff I can sink my teeth into, like I did with BOTW.

Hopefully we get some new announcements because after Mario I have no idea what I'll be interested in playing on it

Excellent first party lineup.

What's sorely missing right now is Virtual Console and games that are designed for portable play, e.g., Rhythm Heaven, Rusty's Real Deal, Picross, etc.

Easily my favorite system of all time at this point in it's life. So many great games! I haven't played at a pace like this in years. Zelda BotW, Mario Kart 8, Arms, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, Graceful Explosion Machine, Cavestory +, Disgaea 5, Snipperclips, BoI, and more coming soon in the best combination of console experience + handheld experience. Never thought I would be into gaming this much again ^_^

It's great having console games on the go, but the actual console is still lacking a lot. The software still feels bare bone. There's no internet browser, netflix/hulu, a chat system..etc

The console plastic wears quite fast, the joycons are all shiny now. At least I can take them off and get new ones to fix the problem, but I was bit surprised how fast the matte finishing just rubbed off so quickly.

I'm nervous putting any significant time into certain games on Switch because that save file only exists on the console. How would you feel if your system died with no recovery option?

If I lost my saves I'd think 'well, I had a good run' and probably give up on it altogether.
Sounds ridiculous maybe, but losing my Zelda save would be such a blow I wouldn't recover.
The lack of cloud saves or even SD card back-up is point blank the worst thing about the console.

Do we know a reason why we can't back up our saves? Is there some sort of rationale from Nintendo on this? Just curious

True, I just hope the popularity continues and Nintendo can capitalize on the success for a really swell Switch 2 system with a lot more power in a couple years.

I only have ARMS and Graceful Explosion Machine, but I think the OP's assessment of both is where I would put them (B and A-, respectively)

Looking forward to Mario and Rabbids + solid indie games. Good little system thus far.

If any of you folks are searching for a single player game with strategy elements that's a blast in short bursts, do not sleep on Ironcast. It's got match three elements too but they flow oh so well with the steampunk aesthetics and general feel of the game. Definitely one of my favorite indie titles on the system.

Currently have 4 games on my Switch for the mean time: Zelda BOTW, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Voez & Overcooked. While I wish I had the disposable income to invest more into the Switch, I still have enjoyed my time playing on the Switch so far. While the Switch does require touching up in terms of the online, eshop/VC, and other minor qualms, I can over look them for the time being. While I still enjoy my 3DS from time to time, I am slowly wishing for everything to be developed (and ported) for the Switch. Definitely looking forward to the array of titles to possibly come to the Switch.

Got mine on launch day. My thoughts:

The system itself:
I like the look and feel of the device. The handheld feature is just so valuable to me. I use it all the time. The screen is a nice size, but there's a lot of bezel, so there's still room for improvement for a smaller footprint or bigger screen. The Joy-con don't bother me at all in how they feel, but they don't attach that well to my system. I haven't removed them that often (mostly play in handheld mode, and I also have a Pro controller for docked use) but they still wiggle a bit. Would prefer a rock-solid feel for those parts.

The docks are a bit iffy too. People scratched their screens because of it, and I had a real fear of that happening to mine as well. Since most of it is just empty plastic shell anyways, why didn't they go for a compact design that doesn't interfere with the screen at all? Can't wait to get the third party travel dock for my other room, partially because charging while playing in handheld mode is annoying with just the one charger the system ships with.

I feel like there's not that much to do with the system software either. There's no real diary, media playback, mini-games or other fun features. Something like Badge Arcade would be nice. When is streaming and recording happening? There's some stuff that seems kinda glitchy (like the Wi-Fi) or is just straight up missing (save transfers) as well. The firmware will need some work.

The online stuff is still one big question mark. I'm not exactly jumping at the opportunity to pay for online play. The stuff they're offering doesn't sound that great. Forcing players to use a phone app to do basic stuff like invites and forming parties is unacceptable. All of these things don't leave me very hopeful for the future. At least it's somewhat cheap.

Software:
Nintendo is providing a steady flow of new exclusive games, with some third party sprinkles. I'm very satisfied with the current releases and the pace at which they are released. The rest of the year looks good as well, and I really hope they can keep this up. Hopefully they'll attract more third party releases in the future, and VC would be nice as well.

Zelda Breath of the Wild: 8/10
I had a lot of fun with this game, but I don't think it's as amazing as a lot of people say. After a while I found that the world is just quite empty with no real suprises to discover. The story sucks and so do most of the classic Zelda elements like dungeons. The open world Zelda formula still needs a lot of tweaking.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 7
I already enjoyed MK8 on Wii U, and this Deluxe version honestly doesn't offer much more. It's nice to have Mario Kart on the go, but I am really disappointed that they didn't add some new cups. That would have been enough for me.

Puyo Puyo Tetris: 8
A fantastic puzzle game that I'd recommend to everyone. I'd already played it on PS4 (import), so this release wasn't as exciting to me as it might be to others.

ARMS: 6
I really wanted to like ARMS, but I just don't. The world Nintendo has built here fascinates me. Unfortunately there's just not enough depth to the gameplay (that I found anyway) and content to support it, and really draw me in. I don't feel like the DLC is going to change that at all.

Splatoon 2: 9
In my opinion the best game on Switch right now. The most important thing is the base concept, which is just brilliant. I can't get enough of painting everything, and there's tons of ways to do it, with all the different weaponry. There's loads of content across the various modes, and lots of gear to collect. They keep adding to the game as well, with new weapons every week, new maps and Splatfests. The only downside is their insisting on map and mode rotations. It's unacceptable that players are forced to play just a handful of maps every two hours. It has happened that I played the same damn map 6 matches in a row. Also, if I want to play Salmon Run, just let me. At all times.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied. Couldn't expect much more from a system's first year. The most important thing, the games, are already here, so the rest are just somewhat minor complaints. One last thing I'd like to add, is that I am a bit disappointed in how much Nintendo is still investing in 3DS. It'd be fine if those games all came to Switch as well, but they're not. Get on that Nintendo, or just drop the damn thing.

Console: 8

1st party titles: 9
3rd party support: TBD (Honestly waiting for more; it not there yet imo)

Only had about 2 and a half weeks before mine suffered severe water damage (smh), but I enjoyed the time I spent with it on the go (daily subway commutes, etc.). The build quality is better than I expected (very light, sturdy); I fell in love with the joy-cons.

My biggest knock is the lack of App support. It's a bizarre omission in this day and age (imo), whether it's coming or not. "It's not a big deal, other mobile devices you may or may not own can do it" -- that's the point.....

Then there is 3rd party support which I feel isn't quite there yet. But the future looks good.

Now I just need to ship mine off for repairs. Was really diggin' Zelda.

Might be my favorite game system ever. The portability and how fast it is to pause and get back to a game was a pipe dream not too long ago. It's a solid 9/10 overall for me.

I've spent 265+ hours on BotW, longer than any other game besides fighters, and will get back to it once DLC pack 2 comes out. MK8D and ARMS are both top notch multiplayer experiences. Got Splatoon 2 only because it was 40% off during E3 and I did not expect to love it so much. It's all I want to play right now. Besides that I got Kamiko, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Sonic Mania, which are all pretty good for their price tags. IMO it has easily the best first year of any system in recent memory.

I have 3 games on my Switch, they're all pretty good.
Sonic Mania, which I dislike due to how sonic controls (I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually though?)
Thumper, a really weird game but I'm into it.
Fast Racing RMX, a really beautiful game that I'm enjoying quite thoroughly. Difficulty is a bit much as the AI cheats often.

Playing it daily docked and not docked. With joycons and with pro controller using the stand or when in docked mode. It is amazing and probably the best handheld I ever had so far probably gonna consider it as much going forward after 2018.

Pro controller is essential however for many games in my opinion. I also decided to go digital very fast as switching cartridges became too much of a hassle real fast and I committed myself to never own more than 1 physical copy going forward. Switching between games and docked and handheld makes that to me essential as well but of course downside can't trade or sell the games later or keep as a collection.

I got 6 titles so far.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Best Mario Kart I have played since N64 and I love it. Must own title for the system and one of those games you really can't get anywhere else with that quality and player base. System seller. Works in all scenarios handheld docked stand.

Arms. Best fighting game and motion game I have played in years and it is new fresh and something you couldn't get elsewhere of this quality. It is a great game and I enjoy it a lot. Usually play with pro controller however because of real life stamina lol but I enjoy the motion controls. Usually play party mode and I consider it a must own. Works in all scenarios handheld stand docked.

Splatoon 2. Great shooter that I have also put the most hours into so far but half of that or more for all the grinding. I like it but I cannot play this in handheld mode at all. Stand works but have to use pro controller and docked works good with pro. It isn't the best shooter in my opinion and overall I am not sure it would ever make my all time 10 at all but it is different enough and fun that I mostly enjoy it. But some issues exist especially for an online shooter. Recommend it. I do not use the motion controls gave up and I will never try them again.

Super Bomberman R. Love it online. Have a blast and it is every bit as good as bomberman games in the past. I also enjoy the single player. If you like the gameplay it is a no brainer. I get games every weekend on it. Weekdays is rough. Bots play works and it is great it all scenarios docked stand handheld it doesn't matter. Recommend it.

Street fighter ultra final challengers. Great 2d fighter. The online actually works great and as someone who play SFV I have no complaints. All the modes everything feels like the definitive edition of an all time great. The changes they made were welcome. It works great in handheld with lite controlls using touchscreen and in docked or stand I have no issues with the game using the pro controller with pro control scheme. Takes practise to make perfect especially since I prefer a stick. If you like street fighter it is a no brainer. If you want to play street fighter 2 it may even be a system seller right now.

PUYO PUYO TETRIS. I play this a lot. On the switch it is a must own title. Seriously amazing and fun offline and online. Best TETRIS game I have ever played and now I love PUYO PUYO. Games can get insane and also quick to fire up for a short one. Works perfectly with all controllers in all situations.

I was gonna pre order Mario rabbids but I am not because I realize I don't have the time and with these 6 titles I don't think I am about to get bored anytime soon. Loving the console and games so far and while I still play PC as I always have since dawn of times I am currently spending almost all my game time on this thing.

What I am looking forward to and consider future must own titles are Smash bros and Pokemon mainline game. Will get both digital and will end up with even less time to do anything else lol.

Not looking forward to paying for online but will probably do it and will try to be mildly optimistic but we need a better app because I can't use it pretty much as a result of my phone and its OLED screen and risk for burn in. Also needs to be a general system for group chat and party that isn't tied to a game specifically or make sure there is one category for every game. The classic each month sounds interesting as I do love retro gaming.

The OS I am very happy with. Sure it could use apps but I already got stuff like smart tv Apple tv smart bluray player smartphone PC laptop... I hope it never slows down because now it is simple snappy and doesn't steal my time when I want to boot up and play a game. The OS on the Wii U and Wii is something I hated that actively would cause me to not boot up because I couldn't be bothered, no joke.

Looking forward to hear more and what others play and do with their machine.

Edit: to add a bit more to the console itself. Quality seems real good. I don't use any cover for the screen or anything else. I got no scratches as far as I can see or problems as a result of taking on or off the joycons. Dock is perfect and no issues there. Battery life is fine and better than what I was expecting besides the added power vs previous handhelds I have owned.

What don't you like about the eShop (other than the lack of music obv)

I won't try to answer for them, but there are plenty of valid issues with the eshop in comparison to other services. The layout is messy and limited sorting options wise, while neither of the consoles is perfect the Switch definitely takes a loss here. I don't like navigating it at all and rely mostly on either my prior knowledge of a title or recommendations from others to determine what to look for.

I love the system itself but it does leave a lot to be desired in certain areas still.

I think it's a very good console but as someone who owned a WiiU I have to take some points off for the amount of cross gen / ports which make up its current library. Even then the ability to play those games on the go with added extras mostly make up for them being ports.

I think once you add in Mario X Rabbids, Pokken, FIFA, Fire Emblem Warriors, Skyrim, Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 with some OS updates and maybe a few VC games it will look even better.

Current score - 8/10.
Potential end of year score - 10/10.

I'm buying one in a couple of days with Zelda, Bomberman (got it for cheap), Fast RMX and Shovel Knight.

What are people's impressions of Graceful Explosion Machine from the perspective of someone that wants replay value (or a reason to keep coming back to a game, like new content) but not necessarily just high scores?

Really liking it but mine's been gathering dust since I finished BotW, save for some Puyo Puyo Tetris here and there.

Waiting for Mario Odyssey to come along and consume my gaming life.

GEM doesn't really excel here. If you were just running through the game it wouldn't take long to beat, and as far as I know it doesn't have much in the way of post release content. With that said, I rarely score attack games these days, but found doing so in this game extremely compelling due to its systems. Basically an S+ ranking requires a perfect run, though scoring higher requires different things too. It's not an easy game though, which makes it a bit unfriendly to some people.
