Sony Is Not in an 'Arms Race’ With Microsoft, Says PlayStation Boss

Sony bought a AA dev that only made games for PlayStation for the last 10 years. Yeah very shook. Anything else?
The Bluepoint rumor. Which is another thread you're in. You're in every thread tangentially related talking about it. Why does this bother you so? It doesn't hurt Microsoft in any way.

Nope, but the wording gives it away. Sony is publishing THEIR games. Sony doesnt own the IPs in these cases. The bungie studio was created in 2018 way before sony got involved.

Also the job listings ask for multiplat engine experience.

  • You have a lot of experience developing an optimized multi-platform graphics code taking advantage of each platform to its fullest.

yes they are publishing, they may also own the IP as that’s usually how Sony operates when publishing.

Sony owns Returnal IP prior to buying HMQ

Not really evidence they are working on time exclusives. Majority of the time Sony publish games it's for IPs they want to own, there are obviously exceptions like piisbing Nioh in Japan.

But will money hat random games for timed exclusivity.

Weren’t they knocking at everyone’s door to sign deals?

They didn't say they don't do exclusives. Sony is sll about exclusives and blocking xbox from accessing great games.
Here Herman says that they don't buy random developers which makes sense. You don't buy random developer who may or may not deliver. When you spend 200 to 500 million dollats, you spend it wisely. You buy developers that you already tested and know they will deliver. This is business, a good one.
They also buy exclusivity of games that have high potential and is developing by well known developers/ publishers.

It’s not for lack of attempts from Microsoft, it’s just that when it comes to paid console exclusives, Microsoft has to mostly settle for the scraps (Call of the Sea, The Medium, etc).

In case you are wondering why, well for starters, there is a far bigger install base on PlayStation, and Microsoft nurturing their user base to avoid paying full price for games (mostly due to Game Pass) surely is not going to help them secure top tier timed exclusive games (unless they pay a lot of money to ensure the games come out day and date on GP).

Sony kind of created this monster, going back even last gen, and they were seemingly going after bigger and bigger games and word is they were locking up even more games this gen. For a good while all the talk was pretty much what's the next big third-party exclusive Sony will locking-up to keep from MS....now all the talk is what's the next third-party studio MS will buying to keep from Sony.

Also, I think MS is and was way more conciliatory in regards to games they own appearing on Sony's console. If Sony owned Minecraft that thing would be gone from every other console but their own, and there would not even be speculation on weather games from id or Bethesda would be appearing on any other console but a Sony.

But, nah, Xbox showed up. It's unfortunate that they haven't brought next-gen experiences yet - it really is. But they've been kicking ass in every other department, so I think they deserve credit.
Phil Spender using daddies money to buy shit isn't showing up until it bears fruit. Right now it's the rich kid everyone hates and pretends to be okay with to play with their shit. That's Microsoft's MO.

If I were Jim, I would be careful about all those timed exclusives from Square. FF7, FF16 and now Forspoken. It reminds me of that speculation that after DeathLoop, Ghostwire Tokyo Jim was trying to sign Starfield as a timed exclusive which forced Phil's hand. Probably something someone made up, but its not something you want to entertain.
Why would he be careful about making deals with 3rd party companies? You do realize not every publisher wants to be sold just like Zenimax was (after the FO76 fiasco), nor the fact that all publishers are privately owned like Bethesda was, from the moment phil enters SE/SEGA/Ubisoft, or any publicly traded company doors the rumors would immediately start rolling, not from typical Grubbhub but from reliable ones like Bloomberg simply because the Shareholders are the one to leak to increase the price/stocks

Nintendo also does similar deals btw (like MHR timed exclusivity)

Do we have an actual number/list of studios owned by Sony, MS and Nintendo?

Currently Sony and Nintendo are more efficient with their studios and release games with good reviews.
On Sony's side, nearly all first party games are always at the top of the rating charts.

Nintendo is Nintendo 😅

ATM MS has the quantity, but IMO not the quality like Sony studios.
Only MS studio that managed to deliver all the time is Playground Games and hopefully will continue to deliver with Fable and FH5.
All other studios have to prove themselves or had good and bad games. IMO even Bethesda in general has to show they can still do it again, after releasing a lot of unfished/buggy games.

IGN spins this as a clickbait and people fall for it.

He’s talking about how some gamers were vocal on why didn’t Sony buys studios in response of MS.

Basically what he is saying is, if there’s future acquisitions they will take time and be thoughtful.

For those saying they can’t afford it, Look at Sony as a whole! They brought a lot of things, just not game related!

the story here is how some fans get so delusional after MS spending spree they invented the “acquisitions rumors” as another console war fuel.

Can you google how much cash in hands Sony has and convince me why it is not enough to buy Bethesda?
If you claim something bring evidence or you are worth being banned.
.....Because Bethesda would have cost Sony 20% of their Total Assets/Cash🥴😂 they have 40B's

Even with a market cap of 124 Billion, Microsoft can afford to purchase Sony outright and have Money to burn.

No one is saying Sony is broke, hell they're Cash has increased nearly 30% this yr alone, but they aren't in the same conversation as MS, Apple, Google. It's as simple as 124B vs 2Trillion (Market cap) or 40 B vs 135 B (liquid assets)

This is partly true.

But
Microsoft has no other choice but to buy Big brand established developers. MS is behind behind. Only way to pull some consumers from Sony is to make a Purchase that prevent big name ips from being played on PS.

Sony goes for smaller name studios bc they can and will be talked about, also cheaper, and they make these studios grow and establish big name new IP’s

i dont think MS has good management in Place to oversee or time to waste on smaller Studio/ips until they become bigger and better within the company
If Microsoft were to buy Rockstar, that wouldn't get Europe to buy Xbox. They'd just stop playing Rockstar games.

Zenimax was once in a bluemoon acquisition. Microsoft will acquire studio but dont think they will go for such expensive acquisition again because it doesnt make financial sense. There is a reason why Zenimax wanted to sell their gaming division. Producing AAA games is difficult and has insane risk involved.

Microsoft needed publisher for its gamepass service. Sony has no need to for a publisher level acquisition. Hence the statement about not going for random company. But of course people start using it for dick measuring contest.

But you said they can't afford to. That's different than "they can afford but Microsoft can afford more."
We know that your US tech companies are living in a bubble. They are the new GE and Exxon. 😂

In 5 years or less the general opinion of game pass will be much lower. It's in the honeymoon phase and they are willing to spend to get you hooked. I'm glad MS is doing well enough to keep Sony at their best but I'm also very happy Sony is sticking to a more traditional console model. I think Sony is better at a long term gaming focused plattform, MS just wants your monthly income.
