Soapbox: The Week After PS5's Showcase, Sony Told Us Nothing About Its Next-Gen Console

Whatever Sony is doing seems to work. And they didn't even need to drop $7.5B to outsell their competition.
That’s what people don’t realize. The average consumer has no idea any of this stuff has gone on nor do they care. Only on these forums and gaming social media are things like studio acquisitions known or hardware deep dives and we’re such a minority that we barely move the needle. There’s a reason Travis Scott got a Dualsense controller, to show it off to his 30 million followers who own a console to play FIFA and Call of Duty. That’s the market these companies care for.

Manage your product on your own schedule. If you've done your market research, and your opposition research, and have a product and marketing strategy that you believe in, then you don't need to be reactive. Allowing your competition to dictate your strategy means you're already on the back foot.

Why does Sony need to release info in lockstep with Microsoft? Are there getting beat on sales or demand? Who should be setting the tempo, the leader or the challenger?

Because the bastard thing is out in less than 50 days and ppl are are going to the hassle to pre order?

It's completely different from what they did in 2013.

Also, it doesn't show confidence in their product, if their main competitor is completely transparent about everything.

Apple releases some product like every few months, while we get a new mainline console gen every 7 years.
Hardly comparable, imo.

See above.

What difference does that make? Also it's not every few months. iphone is is every 2 years, iMacs release like every 3 years and Mac Pro like 6 years. If stuff didn't get leaked the only time we'd know about new products is when apple decides to sell them.

They showed what matters. PS fans will take an inarguable pile of garbage for a UI as proven with PS4 if it means they get good games.

They know the timetable. They have their events planned internally. Marketing does its thing. If it's a good team, then they plan their events to maximize momentum going into product launch. You can't keep reacting to the competition, or they dictate the terms to you. if you're an industry leader, that's not the right approach to take. You're supposed to set the standard. MS can try to play the disruptor role, but with launch demand outstripping supply, there's not a whole lot of concern to be had. By the time supply catches up to demand, the full brunt of the marketing strategy should have been realized. That's more than 50 days away. That's early-2021.
