The console investment at MSRP it's pretty low, but the production not keeping up with demand and bumping games up 10 bucks which can transalate to even more in other regions makes it such a bad option right now.
Not to mention that the perception that the games are eventually becoming multiplatform reduces a lot of the perceived value, you are not buying a PS console anymore for the exclusive or legacy catalog.
As someone with a lot on investment on PSN over the years, buying games on PS this gen feels like being constantly ripped off.

Don't make me laugh...

People spend more than 1000 dollars (much more) for tvs and smartphones or notebooks and none of these things endure for 7-8 years, they are lucky if people keep these things for more than 3-4 years at best, i'm not wealthy and i still change my oled tv\pc\smartphone every 2-3 years.

If you consider gaming such a shitty type of entartainmnet compared to watching a movie or calling someone what are you doing in an enthusiast gaming forum?

Gamers are just cheap fucks nowadays, deal with it.
No joke, 500 bucks cellphones are mid tier now.
Consoles prices are completly reframed only by that.

And much less performant and capable than its bigger brother. A retard version.

I think they knew that when they designed it, doesn't change the fact it's smaller and cheaper.
I don't know why you keep saying "retard" it's not big or clever.

If more or a majority of Playstation games are coming to PC in the future than this sure will play a role in the early stages of development for these games but i'm convinced it doesn't as of now.

I acknowledge Sony's interest in the PC market but again the games that have been released on PC for now are a fraction of the ones available. Let's be realistic.

I'm not against multi platform releases either in any way but i still believe it is a misconception to think every first party Sony game will come to PC.
I guess we have to wait to see if sony is gonna port all of their games on pc or not, time will tell.

No. PS5 disc and digital are perfect as home consoles. Both have the same specs so easy for developers to optimise their games.

Maybe a handheld alternative similar to the Steamdeck might interest me. One which is compatible with all PS5 games if possible.

Did you missed sony releasing their games on pc aswell, they literally bought a studio specialized in pc ports recently...

If M need to worry about 19227284273 different specs, it is the same for sony since both release their games on pc.

We are not in the timeline where first party console games are made with a single hardware in mind anymore my dude.
I’m definitely aware of every point you made. But say Naughty dog, they will develop Uncharted 5 or whatever specifically for one piece of hardware, ps5. If / when it comes to PC, Nixxes will worry about making sure it works on lower spec pcs. ND focuses only on ps5 they don’t care if a 2500k or some other processor that’s several years old can handle it. They don’t care if a 1050 ti or 2060 can handle it. Nixxes will handle that and if the game works on older hardware, great. I’m sure it’ll look a lot different than NDs vision when they only cared about optimizing for one platform.

Why in the world would they have done that? you still can't walk into a store and get one so pricing is obviously not a problem. Games being ported to PC well after they launch on the console have nothing to do with it, the games are being made for the PS5 first and then ported to PC not developed with PC in mind in the first place.

The S SKU will most likely cause Xbox games to be the "port platform" vs. the target platform. Xbox has the perception of being "2nd" WRT marketplace % and contrary to what they market to devs, it requires a decent amount of extra work to make a game run well on the S and the X. This makes the PS5 being the target platform for AAA console games lock, which'll become more noticeable when/if a "pro" version comes out later down the line.Given the supply constraints and inflation making the real difference between the consoles price points less meaningful, I think the S was probably a short-sighted mistake to try and claw some early marketshare away from Sony.

Fascinating idea! The lower spec on the XSS makes it easier to produce. It would be nice to have more inventory for more people to game. The XSS is constantly being restocked and people mistakenly think that it is all launch units sitting on shelves.

This may be a situation where MS because of their broader focus on PC, mobile, cloud, and console needed a different SKU to have more vectors into their ecosystem. Sony simply doesn't have that reach. Their only vector is console and the only digital source for games is the PlayStation store.

MS also did more than just produce a cheaper console they also redid their development kit so all creators to make multiple versions of titles in one dev cycle. I don't think Sony would want to take that time to create the infrastructure to support that vision. The idea is interesting but I think it's best each company do what works for them. MS can do certain things Sony cannot and would not. If the MS direction really takes off others will follow just like achievements and standard wireless controllers.
This !!!!
Good points there sir.
MS in terms of online infrastructure & vision for gaming are vast a head from Sony. BC games, cloud saves, cloud gaming, game pass cheep gaming for 15$ per month, good deals in MS store, and If they manage to put close fight this generation, next one will be a different story. Actually they fighting several fronts at once, slowly gaining positions what are important to sustain their online plan for cheep gaming for everyone & more subscriptions.
I want to see Sony also expanding on that front. After all, all gamers will benefit this.

No because the series s was a horrible mistake
It is for gamers and the next gen progress, but it’s becoming clearer that it’s evolving to be the main Xbox.

Cheaper to produce, likely better margin for MS all the while still achieving +1 for the Xbox eco system. Why not ramp up its production.

As eventually the ratio starts tilting heavily to S as the larger install base Xbox, we can kiss goodbye any dev giving a toss about leveraging 12tf apart from a rez bump from the S. The X is essentially the pro console. This also screws over PS5 and pc in a broader sense.

Correct, but nixxes can't do miracles with every game so ND still has to have an eye of regard on some aspects of the engine or whatever part is difficult to work with in a future pc port, and if sony has nixxes, M has probably some internal studios that develop the pc version aswell.

Also, didn't microsoft said that halo and forza are tha last crossgen games? i think their next games are gonna have a big jump in minimum requisites to run on pc unless they wanna lose again the graphic\tech battle against sony like the last gen.

You can choose digital or disc.
I don't think sony would ever offer a lower spec version.

i'm holding off for a Series X but as time goes on i'm more and more tempted to just grab the Series S. if I were a PS fan and were struggling to get a PS5 then right now I'd love if there was a £250 playstation console.
Your argument seems to suggest that a lower cost console would mean greater supply since Series S is easier to come by than Series X. That's not the case, because cheaper parts doesn't necessarily mean you have access to more parts.

I propose to you that the reason Series S is more available is because people want them less. It's even apparent from your own post since you would prefer an X and would only settle for an S if you're desperate.

Sure, Sony should have released a retard version of the machine, just like the Series S. But you know what? You are stopping way too early, why not have one with only 4 CUs and 1 GB in RAM? It'd so soooo easy and cheap to produce and it'd be a next gen machine, just like the Series S, just for 720p.

Come on, being serious, the Series S is a stupid idea, always has been. It cut down on the number of Series X machines that can be produced and can only push out visuals at 1080p, while adding headaches to developers. It's a One X just with quality of life improvements and worse GPU in terms of performance, that's not next gen. The jump is very modest as it is and you want to jump back to something that is barely better than a PS4 Pro.
I know a few people now that have upgraded their original Xbox One with a Series S and they are thrilled with them.

They still play on 1080p screens and really dont care about higher then 60 frame rates so the Series S fills a nice niche for some gamers.

Not a knock against the Series S as it's a nice thing to have, but I don't really understand the logic of trying to copy the power priced item that's not selling as well as the higher priced option.

Microsoft is going to have a big issue with Series S in the future. They just did it to undercut Sony and say they have the cheaper next-gen console. It sucks that they didn't care about the games. You'll see that by the end of the generation, Sony's exclusives are going to be better in many ways ONLY because the Series S is going to get in the way.

With that said, why would Sony do that? The PS5 will sell-out for many years. The PS4 never got a real price cut and the PS5 sure will be the same. Why would Sony want to deal with specs segregation and limit the capacity of the games they are doing?
No they won’t. You keep forgetting pc specs are even lower.

It's not like we console owners really get to decide how we use the power anyway. We get to flip a switch between performance and quality if we're lucky. All consoles are the retard version of a gaming machine, and I'm ok with that.

I hate different versions of consoles so no and that includes pro, be it weaker or better. I want one version only so the devs can work only on one version of the game

This cross gen is horrible, no need to add some more
It's like people don't realize there is a PC marketplace that has tons of computers with varying specs. The XSS is just a lower speced version of the XSX just like RTX 3060 is a lower speced version of the RTX 3090. The existence of the RTX 3060 hasn't ruined PC gaming in the least. The XSS won't negatively affect console gaming either.

Anything MS does Sony should keep doing the complete far opposite.

MS does these kinds of things out of desperation, not any kind of strategic market needs.

As we can see by now from the Series S sales.

At least that’s one thing Jim Lying Ryan didn’t lie about. 😂

god no.
Be greatful, that at least one of the console makers decided not to lower their standards.
Sony doesn`t need to casualize their hardware, they knew it would sell gangbusters anyways and there`s no need to make development harder for yourself in that situation.

Yeah the near 50/50 sales split sure shows how desperate MS is and what a mistake having 2 SKUs was. I guess they became one of the biggest companies on the planet by accident. Surely GAF forum posters know best.

I don't care about the PC marketplace, when I boot the console I expect to play the best version of the game I bought, hence why I play on consoles in the first place.

It's a bad idea.

As a gamer would rather developers have to optimize for as few platforms as possible.

And by sounds of it majority of developers don't want to be held back.

we're well over a year into this generation and getting hold of a PS5 is still difficult. same goes for the Series X but the Series S is easy to get hold of.
If you are willing to get a bundle or pay $200 over retail you can definitely get a Xbox Series X or PS5. I know this because I have a lot of friends who got their consoles doing that.

And don’t give me the BS excuse of “ that is too much”…. you are already planning to pay $499 for a fancy toy at the end of the day, I can’t imagine wasting time using tracking sites and all that crap.

Got any data around the average time to develop a game on pc vs console? using internal and external game engines? i wonder how you would remove pre-production work.

It's kinda like developing for PC, no?
Did you see the Elden Ring threads? People are losing their minds.

We already have that, it's called ps4, until jimbo keeps going with this crappy crossgen shit you literally have a less powerful ps5 on your hands for all the major titles.

500 is already super fucking cheap for something that you are gonna use thousands of hours for 7-8 years.
Agree^

The Xbox one X and PS4 Pro should have never been discontinued because they serve as the perfect budget options for right now. Especially with the release of all of these cross gen games.

It you are a very causal gamer you should easily get a solid 2-3 more years out of the PS4 Pro and Xbox one X. God of war Ragnarok and Halo infinite are still playable on those consoles.

The PS5 DE IS the cheaper PS5.

Should they have released a version with gimped hardware? Feck no!!!

Time will reveal why, when games start being targeted specifically to next-gen consoles and legacy platform targets get dropped.

The gap will look big but we are still 3-4 years out from when that will happen. I think it might be sooner for PS5 because games like Rift Apart already look amazing.

it`s like people don`t realize that PC hardware has not been the game design deciding target platform for a good ~15 years now, which is why that analgoy is as pointless as it gets....
It doesn´t matter if there is a billion weak office PCs around, but it matters if the standardized target platforms have a chicken legged brother on which all games have to run, too.
