PS4 titles submitted for certification after July 13 must be PS5 compatible

Not really - it's a new TRC item, so the responsibility is 100% on Sony CERT testing what gets through or not. Which is how consoles always worked, including Microsoft or Nintendo ones when you have multiple compatible hardware SKUs out there. Noone is insane enough to 'cross their fingers and hope it'll just work' after testing one SKU.

To stay with Sony - this has been a standard practice for the past 20 years - including the full BC transitions(the 99.99% compatible ones). Every Gen/Major revision cross-compatibility checks were added to the TRC close to launch (PS1->PS2, PS2->PS2 7XXX, PS2->PS3, PS4->PS4Pro etc.).
Can we say before this date, if your submitted games don't work properly on ps5 during cert, Sony will have to tidy things for you.

After this date, if your games fail ps5 cert, Sony throws it back at you to tidy things?

As for MS because of virtualization, either scenario should be a smaller tweaks at either ends to pass certification. Or in other words, both scenarios won't happen because it just 'work' , to a certain dev friendly degree

Seems like Sony is passing the responsibility of making sure a PS4 title runs correctly on a PS5 to the developers themselves.
at least for validation.
Which also means ps4 games aren't simply going to work as backwards compatible when the console launches like people feared. They are going to have to work on waves of titles like the xbox did with 360 games and who knows how quickly or how many will get released. Kinda shitty tbh
I assume this is so that they can put a ps4/5 badge on the box, as opposed to ps4 only. My expectation is that pretty much all existing ps4 games will work. They still have to test and validate their claim, hence all the testing Cerny talked about. I think he wanted to sound reassuring by telling people that they were testing the top 300 games, this is to make sure the feature is robust.

That's

Still

Backwards

Compatability

(aside from the fact he's inventing words not stated in this news)

edit: Nevermind, thought you meant "PS5 speeds"... Native mode is not "compatability" it's a new version of the game.. there is no way Sony is requiring that.
Seemingly they are. Even if it’s a no effort dev job., the game will run as a PS5 game, meaning full power of PS5 chips available. This is different to running in a BC mode where resources get restricted to mimic the old hardware.

The other benefit of running as a PS5 game means PS5 specific patches can drop down the line enhancing the game if the dev chooses to.

This is identical to the Pro support model as others have pointed out.

No. MS, Sony and Nintendo certification always worked in the same way for all generations: you submit a game to be published, they test if it fills all their checklist (which may change over time) making sure doesn't have certain type of bugs. If the game doesn't pass that you need to fix it submit the game again.

It's quite common that they even check if the game works in different skus of the same generation: different revisions with the same supposed hardware sometimes cause bugs in a SKU but works in another that is supposed to be the same console. This 'is just works' you mention is bullshit, this 'virtualization' is not a magic thing. Like with anything else, games also experience issues within it.

The only change they added here is another thing to the ckecklist that games submitted to be published on PS4 have to fullfill. Devs now will have to check it works in a PS5 and if doesn't work the dev has to fix it. They did the same when added new consoles like Slim/S/Pro/X/SAD/Series X/etc.

PS4 games released before were submitted without checking if it did work in a final PS5 devkit because it didn't exist so they weren't able to do it. So Sony is checking if the already submitted PS4 games work well there. For those that doesn't work, Sony suggest them to fix these PS4 games to make them run on PS5 because Sony can't change the code of the non-Sony games, and until fixed aren't added. This is why in BC (not only in Sony, also in MS and Nintendo) there are almost always some games -or a lot- that aren't supported or added to their BC stores (in this later case is more complex because there are also legal issues with rights/licenses/etc that sometimes prevent that game being released on more platforms or after a certain period of time).

No, MS said higher frame rates on select games, select

Its better for both consoles if current ps4 and xb1 games are made without limitations so are made as SELECT (MS wording). Its not hard to follow really.

did you mean to quote me? My post does say “some” games.
