State of the market

June 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories grew 5% when compared to a year ago, totaling $4.9 billion. First half 2021 consumer spending reached $28.9 billion, a 15% increase when compared to the same period in 2020.

Hardware was the growth driver in June. Hardware dollar sales increased 112% when compared to a year ago as PlayStation, Switch and Xbox console sales all gained.

Hardware

June video game hardware dollar sales jumped 112% when compared to June 2020, to $401M. This is the highest total achieved in a June month since 2008 ($617M). Year-to-date hardware consumer spending has increased 45% compared to 2020's first half, to $2.3B.

Xbox Series was the best-selling hardware platform in dollar sales for the month of June, while Nintendo Switch led in unit sales.

June dollar sales of Xbox consoles set a new record for the Xbox platform, besting the previous high set in June 2011.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform during 2021's first half in both dollar and unit sales.

PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit selling console hardware platform in U.S. history (lifetime sales through 8 months in market, excluding portables).

Content

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
debuted as June's best-selling game, achieving the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history. Launch month dollar sales more than doubled those of the previous high, set by Ratchet & Clank in April 2016

Mario Golf: Super Rush launched as the 3rd best-selling game of June 2021. Launch month dollar sales were the highest ever achieved by a Mario Golf game. The previous high was set by Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, which launched for the Nintendo GameCube in July 2003.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 jumped from #51 in May to rank 17th on the June best-selling titles chart. The Switch version of the game was released in the U.S. during the month, accounting for most of the gains.

The June release of the A Pirate's Life content update helped push Sea of Thieves up from 36th a month ago back into the top 20 best-seller’s chart. Sea of Thieves originally launched in March 2018

Accessories

June 2021 spending on video game accessories fell 1% compared to a year ago, to $207 million. First half accessory sales reached $1.2 billion, an increase of 14% when compared to the same period in 2020.

Sony's DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the best-selling accessory of June 2021, while the DualSense Wireless Controller White led in first-half sales. Three of the top 4 best-selling accessories of June were DualSense Wireless Controllers.

Thanks to Mat Piscatella for the break down !

I did wonder if Xbox Series could top the revenue chart. So units sales are also extremely high. Xbox Series ASP should be somewhere between $420 and $440

But but...Xbox has no games...

It only proves that releasing exclusive games (like Rift Apart) in times when people will still "out of stock" your hardware is literally pointless because you can't boost sales of your console more...

Or since US is the biggest market, that there isn't any stock for PS5? Because India's latest report shows both PS4/PS5 outselling xbox by a good margin.

The only thing you're proving there is that you're an idiot, software is the goal not hardware. What Ratchet proves is that PS5 owners are buying games.

Interesting metric about dollar sales considering that Xbox has 2 skus and one is the same price as PS5 and other one is cheaper that PS5 digital. But of course Switch is a monster as usual. With the same price it would probably top everything.

All those people concerned about Scarlet Nexus Xbox sales from the UK thread……
The charts for physical after all (and Xbox was pushing digital since Xbox One S). In Xbox charts - like Top Paid - Doki Doki and Scarlet Nexus were in top 10-20 all the time.

Well, they don't. Software is key here anyways. Your comment is lame, and wasn't really well thought out. So following your logic....Sony should just ignore the millions of PS5 owners already and not release any big exclusive titles until stock issues settle? You're also failing to mention that there are many who will buy an Xbox just because they can't get a PS5 at the moment.

Looks like that’s their plan for the next bit. 😅

I wouldnt count on that one. We havent really seen any big PlayStation games. Ratchet was lucky, it come on dry time. If it was holiday, i would doubt it would have sold that much.

My metric would be HFW. That would be a big test to PlayStation users. Especially, since the console will still alot.

And as for xbox, their games are on gamepass. If it charts higher, it would mean gamepass is making people buy games more.

Regarding Scarlet Nexus it is hilarious in hindsight how people were concerned that the game won't sell because it was marketed with Xbox and people don't play Japanese games there.

And in the end they are on on the same spot - #6 for Xbox and Playstation :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Don't know what you mean concerned, but it charted 6th on Xbox and 6th on Playstation, 5th overall. Now if we want to try and learn anything from this, we can compare other games.

#2 on Xbox is Modern Warfare 2019, which placed #12 on the overall list...
#4 on Xbox is Mass Effect Legendary, which placed #16 on the overall list...

#4 on Playstation is Miles Morales, which placed #9 on the overall list.... and is available on only two platforms.

So... yeah, we're dealing with very different numbers here.

People pay attention to discs. The same people who will sell those discs next day. If anything, disc sales are useless. Its combined of open/closed case sales, unless I am wrong there.

Huh.. they are in different charts.

Just because they are in the same position in a separate chart... Doesn't mean the split is now 50/50.

Not sure why anyone would think it's disproving the horrendous sales split from the other week.

MLB: The Show being in the top 10 on Xbox despite being on Gamepass proves people are still buying the games, even though they are available on the service.
That is the power of demo. When you are comfortable with a product, you are more likely to buy it. Its how gamepass is built in. Make people taste the game. If they like it, they will buy it.

Isn't that #6 position relative to each platform? How is it possible to compare Xbox vs. PlayStation sales with that information?

Yup: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/npd-...tion-5-ratchet-1-in-sw.1613285/post-264151357 (own post above)

This is true, but it's also true not every xbox owner has gamepass and being #10 on Xbox means you're not really selling much. Again take a look at Modern Warfare 2019, #2 on Xbox.

It is not about the number of sold copies, but the relative interest on the platform itself. Despite all the talk that nobody plays JP games on Xbox, Scarlet Nexus' ranking is literally the same as on Playstation. But using that logic, Scarlet Nexus would not even chart if nobody played JP games on Xbox.

The game doesn't sell unless it is in top 5 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Nobody talking about switch yet? With the games listed on their best selling line, you can see clearly they are simply not in competition with the other two. This to me is the smoking gun.

And Mario Kart 8 still number 2? How? How is it possible that there are people that own a switch that have not already bought this game? 😂😂😂

That isn't what he's saying. He's saying by looking at the other games and where they place overall you can come to a relatively safe conclusion....Now if you can follow this line you have your answer.

Good for MS. they are able to mass produce more consoles now than before. I still think Sony would sell more if they were both in stock seeing as the prices on Ebay are higher for PS5 then series X.

But with this chip shortage I think MS rolling out a streaming stick and app that comes with TV's is going to be huge and give them an edge in terms of mindshare this fall/winter. If MS can get the streaming stick + app + Gamepass on Steam + Gamepass on Switch then wow Gamepass users will increase exponentially.

The minority on PlayStation buys physical.. it doesn't mean a thing.
What was the last metric for digital sales on Playstation? Around 60/40 digital/physical split? On Xbox I am not sure but it will be higher simply because since Xbox One S, Microsoft was consistently pushing digital.

With the recent reports of the general 75/25% between digital/physical, retail charts are becoming more and more useless.
