NeoGAF Games of the Year 2014 Awards

I will admit to being happy that dragon age fell to 4. Still too high of course, but early on it looked like it might be first. I suspected smash might edge ahead of it, but mk8 doing it is a complete surprise.

2004: Metal Gear Solid 3 (Sony exclusive)
2005: Resident Evil 4 (multiplatform)
2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo exclusive)
2007: Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo exclusive)
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4 (Sony exclusive)
2009: Uncharted 2 (Sony exclusive)
2010: Mass Effect 2 (multiplatform)
2011: Portal 2 (multiplatform)
2012: Journey (Sony exclusive)
2013: The Last of Us (Sony exclusive)
2014: Bayonetta 2 (Nintendo exclusive)

Ninja Gaiden was robbed!

You can see now why there was so much backlash here with Giant Bomb's top 10. MK8 only just made it into their 10 and smash bros / DKC were a no show

Apart from the Destiny hullabaloo

What big titles do Nintendo have in store for 2015 ? With such big titles coming this year on the other platforms such as MGSV, Batman, Witcher 3, Halo 5, Uncharted, etc They are going to have to do well to beat their 2014 lineup
I guarantee Splatoon is going to show up on gaf's list for 2015.

This is going to be a great year overall.

Speaking of how exclusives do vs muliplatform games...

2004: Metal Gear Solid 3 (Sony exclusive)
2005: Resident Evil 4 (multiplatform)
2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo exclusive)
2007: Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo exclusive)
2008: Metal Gear Solid 4 (Sony exclusive)
2009: Uncharted 2 (Sony exclusive)
2010: Mass Effect 2 (multiplatform)
2011: Portal 2 (multiplatform)
2012: Journey (Sony exclusive)
2013: The Last of Us (Sony exclusive)
2014: Bayonetta 2 (Nintendo exclusive)

2015 is either going to be Sony exclusive (Uncharted 4/Bloodborne), Nintendo exclusive (Zelda), or Metal Gear Solid V (which would make it 3/3 in these...wow)

If MGSV wins, GAF confirmed full of MGS fans /s

Edit: if it does it would be 3 Sony first party, 3 Nintendo first party, 3 multiplats, and 3 MGS LOL

Resident Evil 4 was exclusive to the Gamecube for a while too. Probably during the year it was voted GotY here.

Amazing results!

Huge respect to Nintendo for producing those games in the face of so much negativity.

What a year for Wii U.

Here's my list

Props to my affinity crew

Guess I'll plug my ballot for anyone interested: HERE
I hope they were counted as the rules said they need to be in numerical order.

Good top 10 aside from Mordor, which is horrid. South Park isn't very good either, but I realize people are playing it because they like the show, which I don't care for.

To be fair I can't think of an XBox exclusive that could really have any chance aside from a Halo game. Maybe Bioshock, though Galaxy was clearly superior imho.

Gears as well. It only had 6 less media votes than Oblivion in 2006. Not saying it should've won on GAF though, because Twilight Princess was also a fine game. Also, Mass Effect 2 was only on 360/PC in 2010.(and it did win on GAF)

My guys right here. Theorymon is apparently my bro, I ranked really high in his. Bayonetta and Shovel Knight are apparently the biggest recommendations to me....I'm actually in the middle of playing both and I'm enjoying them but neither is really clicking with me. Azure Striker Gunvolt is also apparently something I need to play but it never really appealed to me at all, maybe I'll get it if it ever goes on sale or gets ported to Steam and then goes on sale there or something. According to Theorymon I need to play Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall, both of which are games I would have if I had an Xbox One yet (waiting for a Slim model!).

Huh? That NintendoGAF-are-stacking-the-vote posts are for real?
If it was true, a Nintendo game would have won every year.

Fantastic list! Thanks timetokill and Cheesemeister! Really awesome stats for everything. I appreciate the recommendations and affinity list!

Figured I'd give a shout out to my like-minded GAF bros!

And as others have done, I figured I'd rate my top 10 in relation to GAF top 10... I am apparently attached at the hip to the hive mind! 6/10 are within the Top 10! And within the top 50 overall! :)

#1 Dark Souls 2 (GAF #5)
#2 Dragon Age Inquisition (GAF #4)
#3 Divinity Original Sin (GAF #14)
#4 Super Smash Bros for Wii U (GAF #3)
#5 DKC: TR (GAF #6)
#6 Shovel Knight (GAF #10)
#7 Middle-Earth (GAF #9)
#8 Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls (GAF #25)
#9 World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor (GAF #50)
#10 Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call (GAF #44)

I must have missed the voting, but Nintendo wins aren't surprising. A lot of people here really seemed to like those games. Dark Souls 2 is on there other than that I didn't feel very strongly about any games this year.

So why was Steins;Gate put in the re-releases list rather than the main list? I know it only got 8 points, so it's not a huge deal either way, but this was the first ever English language release for it, which puts it into the same department as Danganronpa 1 and 2.

Solid list overall, at least compared to some recent years. I was hoping Danganronpa would be higher, but at least it got recognized.

My top 10 recommendations:
KuwabaraTheMan
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=147839216&postcount=1857
1. [NWU] Bayonetta 2 (Action) = 17 points
2. [3DS] Fantasy Life (RPG) = 7 points
3. [NWU] Hyrule Warriors (Action) = 6 points, 1 honorable mention
4. [360][PS3][PC] Dark Souls II (RPG) = 6 points
5. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC] Dragon Age: Inquisition (RPG) = 5 points
6. [3DS] Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (Rhythm) = 5 points
7. [NWU][3DS][PC] Shovel Knight (Platform) = 4 points, 1 honorable mention
8. [3DS] Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (RPG) = 4 points
9. [PS4] Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! (Platform) = 3 points
10. [3DS] Kirby: Triple Deluxe (Platform) = 3 points

I've already picked up Shovel Knight, and I plan to play Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors eventually. Actually pretty much everything here seems like stuff I might like, aside from Curtain Call. I'm just not a fan of rhythm games.

How my top 10 fared:
Danganronpa: 16
Steins; Gate: not listed
Tropical Freeze: 6
Out of the Park Baseball 15: 189 (my most obscure game)
Persona Q: 36
Danganronpa 2: 24
Bravely Default: 33
Smash: 3
The Wolf Among Us: 29
Mario Kart 8: 2

So I had a few games that didn't really make any impression, but three of the my Top 10 were in the Top 6, so that's a pretty good year for me.

I hope they were counted as the rules said they need to be in numerical order.
Reverse numerical order was allowed. I had the organizers check my ballot to ensure it would work with the parser. As long as you have the number, game name, semicolons, and no gaps on the lineup, it works.

The best part about these threads are the usual people who try to downplay the results and come up with conspiracies regarding why their favourite game on their favourite console didn't win. You can almost hear the sobbing through your monitor.

Not a bad list at all, didn't think Bayonetta 2 was that good though.

Here is the list in comparison to mine...

1. Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (GAF #16)
2. Shovel Knight (GAF #10)
3. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (GAF #24)
4. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (GAF #30)
5. South Park Stick of Truth (GAF #8)
6. Child of Light (GAF #38)
7. Dragon Age: Inquisition (GAF #4)
8. Bravely Default (GAF #33)
9. Shadow of Mordor (GAF #9)
10. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (GAF #36)

Going back, I think I would have brought Captain Toad up a few more ranks to 2nd or 3rd and maybe swapped Hohokum with Persona Q. DR still stays as my GOTY.

I wouldn't change much, list is fine.

Just bugs me how Shadows of Mordor is only 9th and Driveclub finished ahead of Horizon 2.

Holy shit, 4 Wii U games out of the first 10! Top 3 exclusively Nintendo games!

GAF I'm proud of you, giving credit where it's due.

Now, think about it: the system with the three best games of 2014 is selling like shit, people are saying Nintendo should drop dead and go third party or become an iOS developer.

Decent list, and probably really close to how it would have turned out if I had played most of those this year. The one I provided was quite small and heavily leaned on early 2014.

OH my God...

When was the voting process, for this!?

Bayonetta 2 is a great game, but im very surprised it won goty, even here, it was not a very good year it seems :p

Bayonetta 2 is a sequel that polishes and removes what was "wrong" on the first game, in that process it lost something special that the first game had, and unfortunately its too close to Bayonetta 1 to stand on its own, it would not be my goty, although Smash 4 is the only one i put above it this year..

Whatever, im glad the game is getting some recognition, regardless of what could had been, or sales.

Okay, so this is kind of weird but I just checked the 2004 list, how did Minish Cap do that well before it was released in the US :lol? Did that many people import it or did a lot of GAFers just play GBA games on emulators back then or something?

Waaaaaaaaat?

Controversy!

Character action is such a weak genre. I never got Bayo/DMC/et al. I'm surprised that the WiiU was popular enough on GAF, and that character action was popular enough in and of itself for Bayo to run away with the #1.

Ninty having the top-3 and 4 of the top-6 is super surprising to me.
meh list. exclusives always seem to always come out on top here on neogaf, and i already know why.

Then again this is wrong, Bayonetta 2 is a gift for fans of the genre, even including the first game, now im glad it won.
Exclusives always get more attention, but all the games on the list were well recieved critically... also this was a weak year overall.
.
If only because the industry would be better with more games like Bayonetta, Wonderful 101 and Metal Gear Rising.:)

Glad to see OlliOlli got a picture for winning best sports title!

Like I've seen said already, I'm surprised Hearthstone just missed the top 20. Still, the list is really strong overall.

Riiiiight...because three Wii U games won a handful of awards. This is going to move an additional 30 million units in no time. Let's not give ourselves false expectations, here.
Sony didn't even hit 20 yet and that's selling like gangbusters, the wii u is fine for what it is, good old fashioned video game values
